THE SHINING The Shining is an American horror film released in 1980 . Based on the top-selling and terrifying book written by Stephen King , this film is considered one of the best horror films that has ever existed. These two hours and twenty-six minutes of running time are full of fright and shocking scenes that would give goose bumps to anybody. The film was directed by the hailed director Stanley Kubrick, who has directed lots of excellent films such as 2001 a Space Odyssey or A Clockwork Orange. The cast is wonderful too. There are several things that I could say about the actors: the frightening performance of the Burns sisters (the twins), the incredible Cary Guffey and his “finger”… But the interpretation that made me love the film was Jack Nicholson (The Joker in Batman) in the role of Jack Torrance; his facial expression is absolutely horrific and he is identical to the character that King describes in his book . But, without any doubt, the best in his performance is the voice, actually chilling. When I was watching the film and he screamed “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy” I felt a shiver running up my spine. The plot is rather common (haunted houses) but the simp le fact that the house had been replaced by a hotel made this film very popular. The film starts with the Torrance famil y going to the Overlook Hotel to spend the whole winter because Jack, the father, is the winter’s care-taker. What they don’t know is that because of the snow they are going to be completely isolated from the rest of the world. This oppre ssive situation and the horrible ghosts that creep up in the hotel will make Jack go mad to the extent of murdering his family. In my opinion this film is excellent. It is as entertaining as scary. It keeps you in a continuous tension that makes watch the film as a great experience. Kubrick made a magnificen t film that, for once, could be better than the book.

LA TUNELADORA One of the last books I re ad was La Tuneladora. It is by a Spanish author called Fernan do Lalana. I got this book in my house, because we bought it for the Spanish class, to read it there. “La Tuneladora” is an ad venture and detective bo ok that takes place in Zaragoza, and it is about a crime that ha ppens in the city, and the protagonist, Fermín, needs to resolve it. The story is full of mystery and keep s you intrigued until the end, which is quite different from what you think at the beginnin g. The story describes things very we ll, so it is very easy unde rstand and read. The book is empty of photos.

ok

The book was only for re ading it in the Spanish cla ss, but I enjoyed it very much. The author is quite good at wr itin g, because all the things are very cle ar and in my opinion, it is a great book and I´d definitely recomm end this one if you like bo oks about crimes and detectives. Yo u will also learn about pla ce s in Zaragoza.

Our L a n Assist guage a n t tells us CARMEN GARCÍA, LANGUAGE ASSISTANT, 2015-16 My love for Spain was born wh en I studied abroad in Granada in 2011. When I went back to California the following year, I had a really hard time readjusting to its lifesty le. I graduated from university in 2013 witho ut any idea of what I wanted to do with my life. The only thing I knew for sure was that I ne eded a break from school and from the chaotic American lifestyle. One of my professors, wh o happens to be from Alicante, told me about the Language Assistants Program so I decided to give it a shot. My first thought when I sa w my placement letter was “Navalmoral de la Mata? Where is that on the map?” I have to ad mit that I had many doubts about accepting the placement because I hadn’t heard of Navalmo ral in my life. I hadn’t even been to Extremadura before! What if I didn’t like the place? Also, I was about to leave my family and friends behin d, which was also another big challenge. Being the risk-taking person that I am, I accepted the pla cement and, three months after, I was alread y on this side

of the world ready for the challenge. Although the first few months were a bit difficult (not only did I miss my loved ones, but also the food!), I did my best to pull through and adjust. Months passed by and made new friends who have helped me a lot during this journey. Moreover, working with the kids has been a very rewarding experience, not only professionally, but also at a personal level. I have learned to be a more patient and compassionate person and to look at things from different perspectives. Thanks to the experience, I have also realized teaching is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Feeling like I’m making a contribution in my student’s education is the best feeling in the world! Now that my third year in Navalmoral is about to be over, I have to admit that I’ve matured quite a lot compared to who I was three years ago. Living away from home, although very difficult, has helped me become an independent person. There is no other place in the world where I’d rather be now, and to all of you who have been part of my life during all this time, thank you! You all rock!

NATALIA SERRANO, 2 ESO 1 I have a new language assistant. Her name is Carmen and her full name is Maria del Carm en García López. She usually lives in Los Ange les. She has got 1 sister and 2 brothers. They are older than her. She has got a pet. It is a dog. Her hobbies are boxing, hiking and reading. She likes pop, rap and rock music or Mexican music. Her favourite kind of film is a comedy. Her favourite food is her mother´s food, for example “taco s al pastor¨. Her daily routine when she is in USA: she wakes up before half past seven, she takes her niece to scho ol and then she goes back home and she has breakfast. She works between 12 o’clock to 4 o’clock. At 4 o’clock she has lunch. At 8 o’clock she has dinner and then she takes a shower, she watches tv and finally she goes to bed. In summer she goes to the beach, she goes out with her friends or gets togheter with her family. She came to Spain because when she finish ed university, she didn’t know what to do with her life. Then she applied for the programme to be a language assistant. She likes Spanish peop le, the food, the places and our life style. There is only one thing that she doesn’t like of Spa in: the bullfighting and the people working slowly in the street. She would like to visit these plac es in Spain: Galicia, Asturias, País Vasco, la Rioja… She thinks that the most difficult thing abou t learning Spanish is the grammar. It is not the first time that she comes to Spain. It is the seco nd time, because she was in Granada for one year. She knows many famous Spanish people for example: Alejandro Sanz is a musician , Pedro Almodóvar is a film director, Velázque za painter, Zapatero a politician and Benito Pere z Galdós a writer. She loves listening to Spa nish bands like Estopa, Extremoduro, Alejandro Sanz… Her favourite place in Spain is Navalmoral because she feels like being home. She is a good cook. She can cook a Spanish omelette. About her country, she likes the food but she doesn’t like the life style. She enjoys teaching. She loves it. She does boxing, but she does n’t compete. She studies Portuguese and Fren ch. In the future she would like to be a teacher.
