W21 / May

That guy came to the garage and asked for Andy. Andy is my father. "He has been dead for three years now", I said to him. He became very sad. I've never seen any of his friends so sad about my father's death. He was desperately sad. Then he tried to teach me some stuff about life and said i have to make a family. "Things will get much easier", he said. Was he kidding me? W 6

About

ISSP

2013

ISSP About ISSP Association ISSP is a non-commercial education and networking platform for photographers in Latvia and internationally, that works to offer high-quality alternative education for young photographers and to encourage the crossborder exchange of ideas in the art of photography. Since its establishment in 2006, ISSP has yearly run the International Summer School of Photography, curated a number of exhibitions, produced a number of publications, initiated several international education and exchange projects, established a contemporary photography education programme in Latvia, and, most importantly, gathered a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and abroad. The International Summer School of Photography Taking place in Latvia yearly since 2006, the International Summer School of Photography aims to support the advancement of talented young photographers and to promote international networking among emerging photographers around the world. The Summer School is designed for professionals, students of photography and art and artists working with photography. ISSP offers six advanced masterclasses led by renowned international photography masters in a wonderful setting that makes close interaction between all the participants an integral part of the event. During the eight days of the School, each of the students produces a personal photography project under the guidance of their workshop mentor for the exhibition, which opens in Kuldīga on the last day of the School. The aim is to broaden the artistic and personal vision of the participating photographers, who come from all corners of the world. International Summer School of Photography 2013 took place from 3-11 August 2013 and hosted 71 photographers from 23 countries, who participated in six masterclasses led by international masters. For information on ISSP 2013 workshops, see next page. This planner features a small selection of the ISSP 2013 final works. The complete collection of participants’ projects is available on vimeo: www.vimeo.com/issp/issp-2013-final-works and at www.issp.lv ISSP 2013 will take place on 2-10 August 2014 in the same location. The applications are usually announced around end-March, open until early May. More information: www.issp.lv

ISSP About ISSP 2013 workshops W 1

Workshop No.1 Alternate Worlds: Photography and the Constructed Image by Esther Teichmann (DE/US/UK) This intensive workshop was an opportunity for the students to explore the relationship between fiction and the photographic, examining how staging images and working with them as objects allowed the creation of alternate worlds. During the week the students created images both inside the studio and on location, thinking about the construction of narrative fragments. The workshop also explored the photograph as a material and sculptural object, working on the image with collage and painting, and thinking about how new meanings are generated by juxtaposing images with one another.

W 2

Workshop No.2 The Vicinity of Narrative: People and Spaces by Todd Hido (US) Todd Hido works in rich, syntactical layers that he expertly sequences into simple, powerful narratives about relationships, home, and family that somehow ring true with universal memories. In this workshop the students were invited into his world as he made photographs alongside them. The students worked with models and local subjects, and spent time shooting places to explore the narrative power that is activated when sequencing a person with a place.

W 3

Workshop No.3 Storytelling: the Art and Politics of Photojournalism by Yan Morvan (FR) Images are everywhere – throughout the world, people communicate with photos more than with the words, for the good or the bad of it. In this sea of pictures, images on their own are worth nothing. Experienced photojournalist Yan Morvan invited his students to create a story based on real facts that they collected.

ISSP About ISSP 2013 workshops Workshop no.4 W 4 Follow Your Conviction. Working with the Media by Yuri Kozyrev & Andrei Polikanov (RU) Even in these hard times when the printed media has partially lost its position as the "golden client" and chief consumer of photojournalism, it keeps on looking for great photography, untold stories and charismatic photographers willing to provide them. This workshop gave practical knowledge about a variety of aspects of the photojournalistic industry. During the workshop, the students produced photo stories in Kuldīga or its surroundings, defining the theme according to their interests and convictions. Workshop No.5 W 5 The Photobook: Going Beyond the Form by Teun van der Heijden (NL) This workshop was an open dialogue with the students about the concept of a photobook as well as the practical aspects of creating it. A close collaboration between a graphic designer and a photographer is essential for the creation of a good photobook. As an experienced graphic designer, Teun van der Heijden took the role of a storyteller next to the photographer, daring his students to turn their projects into unique publications. The results of the workshop are individual handmade editions. Workshop No.6 W 6 A New Approach to Autobiography by Elina Brotherus (FI) Self-portraiture is a tricky and charged subject matter. In this workshop, Elina Brotherus and students discussed various aspects of autobiography, trying to go beyond the ordinary self-depiction. Individual work alternated with working together in the group and sharing time, images and experiences with each other. The task was to select and illustrate special moments from the students’ recent personal diaries. This workshop took place in frame of international Contemporary Self-Portraits project, bringing together students from the Turku University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Estonian Academy of Arts, National College of Art and Design in Dublin (Ireland), Bildmuseet of Umeå University (Sweden) and ISSP (Latvia).

Kuld朝ga Artist Residency

Kuld朝ga

Kuldīga Kuldīga and its Arts Scene Located 150 km from the capital Riga, Kuldīga is an ancient town, and many visitors also believe it to be Latvia’s most charming. The magic of Kuldīga’s medieval architecture (on the UNESCO National Cultural Heritage list), stunning nature, regular art and culture events – all of this provides an excellent opportunity to escape the haste and routine of working and living in a big city, and find a place of inspiration and creativity. Kuldīga has always attracted artists, filmmakers, designers and photographers as a location for their creative work. The only open-air cinema in Latvia, a modern library and the Art House exhibition hall, the on-going renovation of Kuldīga District Museum and other projects show the investment in the town’s art and culture infrastructure. The establishment of the branch of the Art Academy of Latvia in Kuldiga is currently in process. 2013 saw the founding of the Kuldīga Artist Residency, with the aim of presenting Kuldiga to an international arts and culture audience.

Kuldīga Artist Residency Kuldīga Artist Residency is a new player among other arts and culture initiatives. The residency’s program started in 2013 with the mission of providing a support platform for visual arts and creative industries (design, architecture) artists. Currently artists are invited by invitation only, but we are looking forward to develop programs that would provide grants for artists to support their creative processes. In 2013, the Residency already hosted 16 national and 4 international artists for longer or shorter placements. The Residency works in close cooperation with the Art Academy of Latvia, hosting regular workshops for its students. Projects aimed at the exchange of experience, as well as building up skills and knowledge are very much welcomed – please feel free to contact us. We look forward to cooperation with university level schools of art and creative industries, organizing field practices and workshops for students under the guidance of professional artists. Our mission is also to foster cooperation between artists and craftsmen, bringing together the creative industries with local manufacturers. For more information, please contact: maksliniekurezidence@kuldiga.lv or Ilze Supe, Manager of Kuldīga Artist Residency ilze.supe@kuldiga.lv

Art Academy

Art Academy About the Art Academy of Latvia The Art Academy of Latvia was founded in 1919 by one of the first renowned Latvian painters Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945), who strongly advocated the necessity to develop Latvian art and also became the first rector of the Academy. The Art Academy of Latvia, based in Riga, is an institution of higher education in art, design and art history. The Academy is dedicated to excellence in teaching and scientific research, as well as in carrying out top quality art and design projects tailored to users’ needs. The students of the Academy study traditional art techniques of the respective art area, specialize in the application of traditional and untraditional materials, as well as develop creative skills related to use of the new media. The modern approach to learning is strengthened by the studio form of artist training that helps to organize individually-tailored studies built upon direct and collegiate cooperation between professors and students. In addition to academic learning, the students of the Art Academy gain valuable experience by actively taking part in study-related and extra-curricular art projects of local and international scope. The Art Academy of Latvia offers opportunities for studies of art, audio-visual media, design and art history in Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts programmes. The studies are offered by fourteen departments arranged in five faculties led by elected professors of the Academy, who are established artists and recognized experts in their respective fields: The Faculty of Visual Arts includes the Departments of Painting, Graphic Art, Textile Art and Drawing. The Faculty of Visual Plastic Arts includes the Departments of Sculpture, Ceramics and Glass Art. The Faculty of Design includes the Departments of Functional Design, Metal Design, Fashion Design and Environment Art. The Faculty of Audio-Visual Media includes the Departments of Visual Communication and Stage Design. The Faculty of History and Theory of Arts includes the Departments of History and Theory of Visual Art and Culture, Restoration and Humanities.

Art Academy About the Technology Transfer Office The Technology Transfer Office at the Art Academy of Latvia was established in 2009 to facilitate knowledge transfer through the licensing of inventions resulting from academic research to industry. The TTO provides mentoring, networking and training to academic researchers and scientists, which enables them to bring their art works and design closer to commercialization. In the technology transfer process, our goal is to advise researchers and students on the marketing of intellectual property rights and to identify, protect, use and defend intellectual property rights. Technology transfer at the Art Academy is a process of exchange, application and the co-creation of new knowledge created in collaboration between academic entities, non-academic organizations and individuals, such as: Commissioned research - research carried out by the Art Academy at the request of other organizations, including national and local governments and enterprises. Joint research - research carried out by faculty members of the Art Academy in collaboration with external organizations, including national and local governments and enterprises, who share human and financial resources in a research project. Knowledge dissemination - the process by which knowledge is acquired, mediated, produced, and transformed in and between different organizations. Licensing agreements - contractual agreements signed between the Art Academy and industries that allow private companies to use specific registered community design invented by the Art Academy. Most of our partners are organizations, including national and local governments, and enterprises working in the creative industries.
