About
ISSP
ISSP About ISSP Association ISSP is a non-commercial education and networking platform that offers high-quality education for emerging photographers and encourages cross-border exchange of ideas in photography. Since its establishment in 2006, ISSP has yearly run the International Summer School of Photography, initiated a number of international education and exchange projects, curated exhibitions and publications, established a contemporary photography education programme in Riga, and, most importantly, gathered a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and internationally. Our projects and programmes: www.issp.lv – International Summer School of Photography www.isspmasterclass.com – year-long ISSP International Masterclass www.selfpublishriga.com – SELF PUBLISH RIGA contest and event www.isspskola.lv – ISSP School, education programme for Latvian photographers
The International Summer School of Photography Taking place in Kuldīga, Latvia every August since 2006, ISSP is designed for young professionals, students of photography and art, and artists working with photography. The summer school offers six advanced workshops by renowned photography masters in a wonderful setting that makes close interaction between the participants an integral part of the event. Each of the students produces a photography project during the week; the collection of the final works is presented at the ISSP final exhibition in Kuldīga. ISSP 2016 took place from 6 to 14 August 2016 in Pelči, Kuldīga, hosting 73 participants from 25 countries and 8 inhabitants of Pelči village. See the next page for information on ISSP 2016 workshops and tutors. This planner features a small selection of the ISSP 2016 final works. The complete collection of participants’ projects is available at www.issp.lv

The Inhabited Image: Walking through the space of perception by Federico Clavarino (IT/ES) What is space? And what is the space of photographs? How do we inhabit the spaces opened up to us by images? This workshop revolved around these
ISSP About the ISSP 2016 Workshops questions by proposing a theoretical walk through disciplines as diverse as philosophy, poetry, painting, sculpture, etc - as well as four practical assignments carried out during the week. Kuldīga
Photo – Artis Gustovskis (LV)
Kuldīga Kuldīga and its Arts Scene Kuldīga is an ancient town located 150 km from the capital Riga; many visitors believe that it is Latvia’s most charming town. The magic of medieval architecture, wild nature, and regular art and culture events provide an excellent opportunity to escape the haste and routine of the big city, and to find a place of inspiration and creativity. Kuldīga has always attracted artists, filmmakers, designers and photographers as a location for their creative work. The presence of art and culture activities is appreciated by the Municipality as a crucial impulse for the town’s social and economic development, and as a way of presenting Kuldīga to an international audience. The modern library with its exhibition space in the Art House, an open-air cinema, Children’s Art School, Kuldīga Artists’ Residence, and the International Summer School of Photography are just a few of the initiatives in the field of arts and culture supported by the local government. The Department of Creative Industries of the Art Academy of Latvia is also on its way, and will be established in Kuldīga by 2018.
Kuldīga Artists' Residence Artist-in-residency programs started in Kuldīga in 2013 with the mission of providing a support platform for projects in the visual arts and creative industries. Since its establishment in 2013, the Residence has already hosted about 50 international artists and over 100 art students for longer or shorter placements. The Kuldīga Photography Residency programme, organised in cooperation with ISSP, has hosted 6 international photography artists, giving them an opportunity to create new work in a wonderful setting. Creative industry projects are also important for the Kuldīga Artists’ Residence. We organize events that bring together artists and local craftsmen or manufacturers of the town to come up with unique design prototypes, combining a social design concept and hand-made quality. We welcome activities aimed at the exchange of experience and building up local skills and knowledge. We are looking forward to cooperation with university level schools of art and creative industries in organizing workshops and field activities for students under the guidance of professional artists.
