About

ISSP

ISSP About ISSP Association ISSP is a non-commercial education and networking platform that offers high-quality education for emerging photographers and encourages cross-border exchange of ideas in photography. Since its establishment in 2006, ISSP has yearly run the International Summer School of Photography, initiated a number of international education and exchange projects, curated exhibitions and publications, established a contemporary photography education programme in Riga, and, most importantly, gathered a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and internationally. Our projects and programmes: www.issp.lv – International Summer School of Photography www.isspmasterclass.com – year-long ISSP International Masterclass www.selfpublishriga.com – SELF PUBLISH RIGA contest and event www.isspskola.lv – ISSP School, education programme for Latvian photographers

The International Summer School of Photography Taking place in Kuldīga, Latvia every August since 2006, ISSP is designed for young professionals, students of photography and art, and artists working with photography. The summer school offers six advanced workshops by renowned photography masters in a wonderful setting that makes close interaction between the participants an integral part of the event. Each of the students produces a photography project during the week; the collection of the final works is presented at the ISSP final exhibition in Kuldīga. ISSP 2016 took place from 6 to 14 August 2016 in Pelči, Kuldīga, hosting 73 participants from 25 countries and 8 inhabitants of Pelči village. See the next page for information on ISSP 2016 workshops and tutors. This planner features a small selection of the ISSP 2016 final works. The complete collection of participants’ projects is available at www.issp.lv

ISSP About the ISSP 2016 Workshops W1

Photography as a Starting Point (of Infinite Possibilities) by Anouk Kruithof (NL) During the workshop the students were working with a broad variety of images that they brought with them, transforming them into site-specific installations. Their final presentations included a floating exhibition in a pond in Pelči, a feeling experience, hidden photos in the center of Kuldīga, etc. Participants: Asya Zhetvina (RU/IT), Elena Anosova (RU), Kristina Podobed (UA), Ksenia Smyr (RU), Līga Goldberga (LV), Maike Brinkman (NL), Natalie Maximova (RU), Nico Müller (CH/FR), Petru Ciocoiu (NL), Vojtech Veskrna (CZ), Yuxin Jiang (CN/UK).

Editing workshop: Tell Me a Story by Paolo Woods (IT) Throughout the week, each student worked on completing their previously started project as an original and individual narrative, paying attention to all aspects from photographic language to ethics, from structure to style. Participants: Alexey Furman (UA), Chiara Dazi (IT/DE), Dimitri D'ippolito (IT), Ieva Benefelde (LV), Justina Leston (AR), Konstantin Chernichkin (UA), Marie Docher (FR), Marzia Trovato (IT), Nina Weymann-Schulz (DE), Pezhman Zahed (IR/DE), Takashi Aoyama (JP), Omar Marques (PT)

W3

Documentary Experiments: Photographing day, night and in between by Alejandro Chaskielberg (AR) During the workshop, we aimed to achieve a more authentic and humanistic way of telling stories. Students were encouraged to develop their personal voice in photography through experimentation, using light as one of the tools to expand on their practice and represent reality. Participants: Anastasia Soboleva (RU), Eslam Abd El Salam (EG), Ipek Cinar (TR), Isabel O'Toole (UK/DE), Jo Phipps (UK), Karlis Bergs (LV), Meg Lavender (UK), Paulius Butkus (LT/UK), Philip Beloborodov (RU), Andrés Joaquin Sendino (ES), Julie Hrudova (CZ/NL)

W4

The Inhabited Image: Walking through the space of perception by Federico Clavarino (IT/ES) What is space? And what is the space of photographs? How do we inhabit the spaces opened up to us by images? This workshop revolved around these

ISSP About the ISSP 2016 Workshops questions by proposing a theoretical walk through disciplines as diverse as philosophy, poetry, painting, sculpture, etc - as well as four practical assignments carried out during the week. Participants: Ana Lía Orezzoli (IT/PE), Andrea Gruetzner (DE), Arianna Angeloni (IT), Arimasa Fukukawa (JP/FR), Claudia den Boer (NL), Constanze Flamme (DE), Frauchiger Marco (CH/NL), Grace Gelder (UK), Ignacio Fanti (AR), Nathalie Vissers (BE), Rute Marta Jansone (LV) Simon Brugner (AT) Fantasy Cocktail by Jason Evans (UK)

W5

The workshop revolved around fashion, style and photography – the participants made work in groups, sharing ideas and responsibilities, and engaged intuitively in a series of exercises that placed them on both sides of the lens. Each of the participants was invited to create visual associations responding to cosmically selected instructions. Participants: Celil Kirnapci (TR), Chiara Kurtovic Kurtovic (IT), Eeva Rinne (FI/UK) , Giulia Parlato (IT), Laurence Rasti (CH), Maksim Finogeev (UA), Margarita Ogolceva (LV), Marie Rime (CH/FR), Sheung Yiu (HK), Silvia Rosi (IT), Suzue Naka (JP), Ula Kahul (PL) There’s Treasure Everywhere by Taiyo Onorato (CH)

W6

This workshop encouraged students to be active creators - using the new environment as a place to begin digging, they sought out the extraordinary in the everyday. The “treasure” they found was only the starting point – they constructed tableaux, built props, staged events and put objects into action. Participants: Akira Otsubo (JP), Brendan Barry (UK), Enrico di Nardo (IT), Fábio Cunha (PT), Genia Volkov (UA), Léo Seyers (FR/BE), Louise Oates (UK), Mari-Leen Kiipli (EE), Marjolein Blom (NL), Matthieu Litt (BE), Nora Vrubļevska (LV), Rumore Pair (Domenico d'Alessandro & Maria Palmieri, IT) The legends of Pelči - Pelču leģendas by Vika Eksta and Anete Skuja (LV) During the workshop we worked together with the inhabitants of the Pelči village, re-creating stories from their local history. Participants: Daina Girvaite (LV), Kitija Fricsone (LV), Ingrida Pulekse (LV), Maiga Kūle (LV), Signe Bumbiere (LV), Sindija Rudzika (LV), Amanda Papava (LV), Violeta Mileiko (LV)

Kuldīga

Photo – Artis Gustovskis (LV)

Kuldīga Kuldīga and its Arts Scene Kuldīga is an ancient town located 150 km from the capital Riga; many visitors believe that it is Latvia’s most charming town. The magic of medieval architecture, wild nature, and regular art and culture events provide an excellent opportunity to escape the haste and routine of the big city, and to find a place of inspiration and creativity. Kuldīga has always attracted artists, filmmakers, designers and photographers as a location for their creative work. The presence of art and culture activities is appreciated by the Municipality as a crucial impulse for the town’s social and economic development, and as a way of presenting Kuldīga to an international audience. The modern library with its exhibition space in the Art House, an open-air cinema, Children’s Art School, Kuldīga Artists’ Residence, and the International Summer School of Photography are just a few of the initiatives in the field of arts and culture supported by the local government. The Department of Creative Industries of the Art Academy of Latvia is also on its way, and will be established in Kuldīga by 2018.

Kuldīga Artists' Residence Artist-in-residency programs started in Kuldīga in 2013 with the mission of providing a support platform for projects in the visual arts and creative industries. Since its establishment in 2013, the Residence has already hosted about 50 international artists and over 100 art students for longer or shorter placements. The Kuldīga Photography Residency programme, organised in cooperation with ISSP, has hosted 6 international photography artists, giving them an opportunity to create new work in a wonderful setting. Creative industry projects are also important for the Kuldīga Artists’ Residence. We organize events that bring together artists and local craftsmen or manufacturers of the town to come up with unique design prototypes, combining a social design concept and hand-made quality. We welcome activities aimed at the exchange of experience and building up local skills and knowledge. We are looking forward to cooperation with university level schools of art and creative industries in organizing workshops and field activities for students under the guidance of professional artists.
