About
ISSP
ISSP About ISSP Association ISSP is a non-commercial education and networking platform that offers high-quality education for emerging photographers and encourages cross-border exchange of ideas in photography. Since its establishment in 2006, ISSP has yearly run the International Summer School of Photography, initiated a number of international education and exchange projects, curated exhibitions and publications, established a contemporary photography education programme in Riga, and, most importantly, gathered a thriving community of emerging photographers in Latvia and internationally. Our projects and programmes: www.issp.lv – International Summer School of Photography www.isspmasterclass.com – year-long ISSP International Masterclass www.selfpublishriga.com – SELF PUBLISH RIGA contest and event www.isspskola.lv – ISSP School, two-year programme for Latvian photographers The International Summer School of Photography Taking place in Kuldīga, Latvia every August since 2006, ISSP is designed for young professionals, students of photography and art, and artists working with photography. The summer school offers six advanced workshops by renowned photography masters in a wonderful setting that makes close interaction between the participants an integral part of the event. Each of the students produces a photography project during the week; the collection of the final works is presented at the ISSP final exhibition in Kuldīga. ISSP 2015, the 10 th anniversary edition of the summer school, took place from 1 to 9 August 2015 in Pelči, Kuldīga, hosting 73 participants from 23 countries and 9 young people from the village of Pelči and Kuldīga district. For information on the ISSP 2015 workshops, see the next page. This planner features a small selection of the ISSP 2015 final works. The complete collection of participants’ projects is available at www.issp.lv ISSP 2016 will take place on 6-14 August 2016 in the same location. Applications will open in March 2016.

The Narrative Portrait by Alessandra Sanguinetti (US) When making a portrait, we have a rare opportunity to gaze into someone else’s world – be it a loved one or a stranger – at times anonymously, at other times with the complicity of the portrayed. This workshop explored portraiture in its many forms, with an emphasis on the use of portraiture within a narrative. Participants: Anastasia Shpilko (RU), Bérangère Fromont (FR), Nathalie Dallies (FR), Federico Estol (UY ), Georgs Avetisjans (LV/UK), Hayley Austin (US/DE), Marcin Plonka (PL), Marijn Kuijper (NL), Marta Berens (PL), Mika Sperling (DE), Motonari Tagawa (JP), Olivier Brossard (FR), Valerio Polici (IT ).

Human Nature by Anna Fox in cooperation with Andrew Bruce (UK) The students researched and explored the relationships between humans and nature in the area of Kuldīga. They sought out people who were willing to share their stories about nature and interpreted those stories visually, perhaps revealing something about our human nature today. Participants: Alex Morvan (FR), Alexander Mihalkovich (BY ), Baiba Buceniece (LV ), Bea Uhart (BE), Celina Bordino (AR/SP), Costanza De Rogatis (VE), Iwauko Murakami (JP), Karlis Bergs (LV ), Kumiko Motoki (JP), Lauris Aizupietis (LV ), Maria Baoli (SP), Maxim Sarychau (BY ).

Experiencing Landscape by Alexander Gronsky (RU/LV ) How do we define a landscape? Is it something we can distance ourselves from? The lens inevitably puts us in the center of everything we see, thus making observation of a landscape a narcissistic act of observing oneself within it. The
ISSP About the ISSP 2015 workshops workshop used landscape as a starting point, a theme to be interpreted through a variety of artistic means. Participants: Andres Donadio (CO/FR), Beata Stencel (PL), Bojan Mrđenović (HR), Giovanni Nardelli (IT ), Joachim Bøgedal Jensen (DK), Lena Tsibizova (RU), Maarten Boswijk (NL), Malgorzata Bielecka (PL), Martina Červenková (SK), Mark Boyarsky (RU), Michal Siarek (PL), Michał Sierakowski (PL), Mikhail Novitsky (RU). Before Photography: A Study of Camera Obscura by Takashi Homma (JP) The phenomenon of Camera Obscura, when the outside scenery is reflected in a dark room through a small hole, has been known since long before the invention of photography. During the workshop the students built a Camera Obscura and created a series of photographs with their handmade pinhole cameras. Participants: Aija Krodere (LV ), Alexandra Soldatova (BY ), Anu Tehver (EE), Elke Eichmann (CH), Fidelia Regina Randmäe (EE), Ida Taavitsainen (FI), Ingrid Gustafsson (FI), Katrine Skovsgaard (DK), Paulina Stadnik (RU).

A Crash Course in Photobook Making W 6 by Nico Baumgarten (DE) and Alex Bocchetto (Akina Books, UK) Every photobook is a self-contained universe with its own set of rules – editing, sequencing, design and choice of materials are all opportunities to add new layers of meaning to a body of work. The aim of this Crash Course was to build a book dummy, covering all the steps of the process through knowledge and creativity. Participants: Abdi Yacine Benseddik (FR/IT ), Alex Stoyanov (UA), Anastasia Markelova (RU), Andrejs Strokins (LV ), Bahar Habibi (CA), Bärbel Praun (DE), Camilla Pongiglione (IT/FR), Ekaterina Anokhina (RU), Flaminia Celata (IT ), Ieva Raudsepa (LV ), Iona Sherwood (UK), Roman Drits (LV/DE), Tatyana Palyga (RU/FR). Into the Wild W 7 by Vincen Beeckman (BE) and Viktorija Eksta (LV ) This workshop was for teenagers from Pelči and Kuldīga district. Kuld朝ga Artists' Residence
Kuld朝ga
Kuldīga Kuldīga and its Arts Scene Kuldīga is an ancient town located 150 km from the capital Riga; many visitors believe that it is Latvia’s most charming town. The magic of medieval architecture, wild nature, and regular art and culture events provide an excellent opportunity to escape the haste and routine of the big city, and to find a place of inspiration and creativity. Kuldīga has always attracted artists, filmmakers, designers and photographers as a location for their creative work. The presence of art and culture activities is appreciated by the Municipality as a crucial impulse for the town’s social and economic development, and as a way of presenting Kuldīga to an international audience. The modern library with its exhibition space in the Art House, an open-air cinema, Children’s Art School, Kuldīga Artists’ Residence, and the International Summer School of Photography are just a few of the initiatives in the field of arts and culture supported by the local government. The Department of Creative Industries of the Art Academy of Latvia is also on its way, and will be established in Kuldīga by 2018.
Kuldīga Artists' Residence Artist-in-residency programs started in Kuldīga in 2013 with the mission of providing a support platform for projects in the visual arts and creative industries. Since its establishment in 2013, the Residence has already hosted about 50 international artists and over 100 art students for longer or shorter placements. The Kuldīga Photography Residency programme, organised in cooperation with ISSP, has hosted 6 international photography artists, giving them an opportunity to create new work in a wonderful setting. Creative industry projects are also important for the Kuldīga Artists’ Residence. We organize events that bring together artists and local craftsmen or manufacturers to come up with unique design prototypes, combining modern design with handmade quality. We welcome activities aimed at the exchange of experience and building up local skills and knowledge. We are looking forward to cooperation with university level art schools and creative industries in organizing workshops and field activities for students under the guidance of professional artists.
