Looking back over this academic year
On behalf of Mr Lees, Mrs Taylor Hawkins, all the teachers and staff at The International School of Samui, we would like to congratulate all our students on such a successful year. We have seen countless examples of academic success, artistic and sporting excellence, as well as inspiring theatrical and musical performances. We have witnessed a school of happy students, who enjoy learning, who work hard and try their best in all their disciplines. We would like to thank all our parents for their endless support and positive attitude towards their children’s learning goals. We are proud to have worked tirelessly this academic year to enable every child to achieve their true potential both academically and personally and to have nurtured so many individual talents. Good luck to those who are departing. To everyone else, we are looking forward to welcoming you back again on Monday 22nd August 2016.

Charity Fundraising - Everybody Loves Isla Appeal As part of ISS’s community fundraising projects this year, the decision was taken to run a wheels day in Primary and Kindergarten to raise money for Isla’s appeal, a 3 year old girl living on Koh Samui who is suffering from Leukaemia. The appeal is raising funds to cover her medical expenses in Bangkok, this appeal can be followed on facebook. All monies raised at The International Food Fair will also be donated to Isla’s fund.
Our Community Comes Together - International Food Fair 2016
The International School of Samui hosted an end of year fundraising and social event in the form of an International Food Fair on Wednesday 22nd June. The International Food Fair offered a chance for our diverse international community to come together and to celebrate our native countries and native foods. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you all for your kind donations of food for the international food fair last week. It was lovely to see all our parents, of a variety of different nationalities, come together to celebrate each different culture through a celebration of food. Without your kind donations, the event would not have been such a success and we sincerely thank you for your time and effort in producing such lovely food for this special cultural event. All proceeds raised will go towards the Everybody Loves Isla fundraising appeal. Many thanks to all the parent helpers for making flags and banana leaf containers. In total both events raised an amazing 36,439 baht for Isla’s Fundraising Appeal. We send Isla our strength and good wishes.

Reception Class Graduation Ceremony - 22nd June 2016 The Reception Graduation ceremony on Wednesday 22nd June was a proud moment for children, parents and teachers in Kindergarten. The Reception children all looked exceptionally smart with their graduation gowns and hats. They sang lots of beautiful songs about belonging , love and friendship and recited a poem. The Ladybirds and Busy Bees took part in the singing also! The graduation diplomas were handed out and the finale of the show came with all the Reception children throwing their hats in the air to celebrate the end of Kindergarten. We would like to thank Miss Wakelin for being a wonderful Reception class teacher and for her excellent work as Head of Kindergarten. Miss Wakelin has been an inspirational teachers in the kindergarten over the past 6 years and we wish her all the very best with her foundation, Sunny Smiles Foundation.
Kindergarten Thai Culture Day—Thai Food Day On Friday 3rd June 2016, our little Thai chefs experienced a full day of Thai cooking and cultural activities related to Thai food. Each class had a go at making Ta-Go (a steamed Thai pudding made with coconut milk and corn presented in banana leaf boats made individually by Pi Pere) and Khanom Khai Nok Kratha Thod (Thai Sweet Potato with rice flour and sugar then rolled into balls and deep-fried) in the cooking room. After preparing these dishes they had the chance to try out these new tastes. Other activities in the KG pod included learning about Thai fruit names by guessing the item in the box and saying the name out loud in Thai. Children were able to taste the fruit also. Children learnt about sweet and salty taste and learnt how to make fresh fruit smoothies. Thank you to the parent helpers for joining in with these important cultural activities. Big thanks to Khun Kroo Aom and Khun Kroo Mai for leading this event with the help of all the Thai teaching assistants. The kindergarten playground looked very colourful and festive.
Kindergarten Ugly Bug Ball - Finale of KG Mini Beasts Topic The Kindergarten 'Ugly Bug Ball' was a huge success on Friday 10th June with the children and teachers dressed as mini-beasts, to celebrate our topic this term. The children could choose from a range of bug-themed activities from face-painting, decorating ladybird biscuits, making their own plasticine bug, creepy crawley cave, and an ickeysticky sensory bug find! Primary School Talent Show The primary talent show 2016 was a showcase of talents, skills, imagination and confidence from our primary pupils. The talent show idea was honed by Mr Hawkes and Mr Hawkey attracting in total some 43 acts from year 1 to year 6. Acts included science experiments, dances, songs, poetry, musical solos, acrobatics, gymnastics, story-telling, jokes and ingenious performances such as hula-hooping whilst eating chocolate and dancing. All pupils showed such amazing skills, creativity and confidence so congratulations to all who took the plunge. Parents, pupils and staff gathered in the Drama Theatre for the final competition which took place on Friday 27th May 2016. With so many impressive acts on show the judges, Mrs Andrewartha, Mr Withers and Miss Goodchild did not have an easy task choosing winners nevertheless decisions had to be made. First place went to Laura in Year 6 with her song “You Belong To Me” (By Taylor Swift) which she performed along with her guitar. 2nd place was awarded to Uliana in Year 4 for her skipping/dancing/gymnastics performance to the tune of 'What did the Fox Say'. 3rd place went to Conor & Leo’s (year 3) double-act hula hopping / eating at the same time. Congratulations to Laura and the runners-up. Laura was presented with a voucher for a one-hour tuition session at Samui Circus Studio in Lamai.
Primary School International Projects A fun time was had by all when ISS celebrated International Projects Week. During the three days the children were given the opportunity to expand their knowledge of different countries around the world. The aim was to promote ‘International Mindedness’ and ‘global citizenship’. Each year group was assigned a Continent and the classes chose a focus country within that continent. The pupils produced some impressive artwork including paintings, sculptures, weaving and collages, interesting fact books, delicious food and exciting IT work as well as learning poetry, traditional folk tales, dances and music about their focus country. At the end of the week the Primary school showcased their work to each other. Each child had a ‘passport’ where they recorded information about each country they visited that afternoon and had to find an interesting fact about it. Finally, students had to locate all the countries they had visited on a world map. This event allowed children to really celebrate the importance of living in a truly international community.
Primary School Thai Food Days Thai Cooking Days were the highlight of our annual Thai cultural schedule at ISS and thoroughly enjoyed by all students. The students undertook a cooking challenge with their class and each day begun with a visit to our local wet market in Bophut. The students had the opportunity to pick the best ingredients for their planned recipes. Under the guidance of Khun Kru Soi and her team, the students were divided into groups. Each group produced from start to finish a beautiful dish. All the dishes were then tested by mystery judges. The judging took certain criteria into consideration, including taste, presentation, authenticity and teamwork. Years 1, 2 and 3 for their savoury dish made Khao Phat Kai and for their sweet Khanom Mhor Kaeng Phuek. Years 4, 5 & 6 made Yum Wun Sen Kai for their savoury delight and Khanom Mhor Kaeng Phuek for their sweet treat. Thank you Khun Kru Soi and our Thai Primary department and teaching assistants for sharing your amazing knowledge with the children and always being so patient at teaching them the important skill of cooking Thai food.

Chiang Mai Trip During Term 3, 20 students and 3 teachers embarked on a week-long adventure trip to Chiang Mai. The ultimate goal of a residential trip is to stimulate self-sufficiency, personal growth and the development of life-long friendships. This year’s trip ticked all of these boxes and many more. Students took part in a range of challenging and new activities including mountain-biking, kayaking, climbing walls and aerial challenge courses. Despite on occasion feeling out of their depth the activities were always safe but educational, teaching students about trying new things and pushing their boundaries. The trip also incorporated some cultural activities as well as environmental awareness projects. All students gained a lot of self confidence from this trip and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to all of the staff at the Chiang Mai Residential Centre for making this trip a memorable, safe, and exciting experience for everyone involved. As they say, “Who dares wins!”
Senior School Thai Food Days Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in a Thai cooking challenge to broaden their cultural knowledge. They began with a visit to the local market to buy the freshest ingredients. Every group then produced a savoury and sweet dish which was judged by teachers from the Thai department. Thank you to Khun Kru Win for organizing this fabulous event.
