Working to create a healthy planet
At Janssen, we are creating a future where disease is a thing of the past. And healthy people live on a healthy planet. Therefore we, together with our partners, are taking concrete actions which will make a fundamental contribution to the health of our planet and the people who live on it.
PLANET
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY At Janssen Belgium, we are committed to supporting and accelerating the transition to sustainable energy. To achieve this, we are investing in innovative technology that we can use to produce green energy.
DEEP GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT
With our deep geothermal energy project in Beerse, we are extracting environmentally friendly heat from 2.4 km underground. Thanks to this project, we are expecting to cut our CO2 emissions by around 30%. We are the first private organization in Belgium to invest in this sustainable technology and we hope to act as an example for many other companies to follow.
We hold a Power Purchase Agreement to buy green electricity generated by wind farms in the North Sea. Thanks to this agreement, all our sites in Belgium and the Netherlands have been running exclusively on green electricity since January 1, 2020.
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Our innovative LION (Labs In One Network) building has been awarded a LEED Gold certification, meaning that it meets the strictest requirements in terms of sustainability. Key criteria for achieving the certification include energy efficiency and good water management, as well as the wellbeing of the people who use the building.

RECOVERING MATERIALS Plant on a Truck is a mobile purification plant that enables us to recover materials such as zinc from the process water used when manufacturing drugs. A separate distillation project allows us to recycle valuable raw materials such as palladium. The materials that we recover are then reused in our production processes. These are two great examples of how Janssen is putting the circular economy into practice.

THE SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR PRODUCTS Our commitment to sustainability not only plays a central role when developing our products, but also when we think about how our products are transported, used and eliminated of at the end of their life. We therefore analyze the environmental impact of our products at every stage of the lifecycle, with the aim of constantly optimizing it.
The environmental impact of a healthcare pathway We measure the impact that our products have on the planet. But patients' healthcare pathways also have a measurable impact on the environment. For example, visits to the doctor's office, hospital stays and outpatient care all play a role. However, the conclusion is simple: the better the drug, the less care is required and the smaller the ecological footprint of the healthcare pathway. Long-acting injections: a more sustainable solution One example of this concept is the use of long-acting injections in the healthcare pathway of patients with schizophrenia. Instead of monthly injections, certain patients can now receive their treatment once every three months. A study conducted in collaboration with Ghent University found that this approach can reduce the CO2 footprint of a healthcare pathway by 20%.
Our earthwards® program recognizes products that meet a number of strict sustainability requirements. To qualify for this recognition, product teams must demonstrate that the product makes at least three significant improvements across our seven impact areas. The earthwards® impact areas
With its 12 earthwards® products (as of 2019), Janssen is making a contribution to Johnson & Johnson's sustainability target. By the end of 2020, 20% of sales will be generated by products that are recognized by the earthwards® program.*
