LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Turkish contracting industry decorates the world!

T

urkish contracting sector has improved considerably in recent years both in quality and quantity. Turkish contactors are now more capable of carrying out gigantic and more value-added projects such as airports, subways, power plants, industrial plants, natural gas and petroleum refineries and highways.

Turkish overseas contracting services sector is among the most sophisticated service sectors of Turkey with having undertaken 8,772 projects in 110 different countries with the value of 329,1 billion US Dollars since 1972, according to the data of Ministry of Economy. This success might be attributed to Turkey’s competitive advantages; including its qualified human resource, enhanced technical knowledge, wide business experience, strong discipline, ability of adaptation to new technologies and innovations alongside its strong political relations and cultural proximity to the neighboring countries, and its determination to sustain coordination and cooperation between public institutions and private sector.

Turkish contract textiles in European shows It is a source of pride that almost 600 textile and decoration exhibitors from Turkey will seek new opportunities in January by attending the most famous European shows starting with Heimtextil-Frankfurt, Domotex-Hannover, IMM-Cologne and Maison&Objet-Paris. A great many of these exhibitors serve the contract industry with a wide variety of products including fabrics, curtaining, bed and bath textiles, indoor and outdoor materials and accessories.

COVER STORY

T

he opening ceremony of the first phase of the gigantic project comprising a terminal building and two airstrips was held with a huge attendance, 29 October 2018. Many countries were represented at the inauguration with top-level dignities while Turkey was showing itself at all levels including President H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who said, “Istanbul is not only our biggest city but also our country’s most valuable brand. This is why we named this great work ‘Istanbul’ after this invaluable city.” Inspired by Istanbul’s cultural heritage for its design, the terminal building presents a spacious area with its giant domed ceiling. It is possible to see the traces of Istanbul mosques, domes and many other historical buildings in the terminal’s architecture.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by dignities of some countries and top level Turkish authorities.

Equipped with many new technologies such as smart wayfinding, the internet of Things, mobile applications, and facial recognition systems, Istanbul Airport eliminates the baggage waiting problem with its 42-kilometer-long 22

baggage system with an hourly capacity of 30,000 pieces of baggage. As the President outlined during his speech, the investment value of the project is 10 billion 247 million Euros, which means an economic volume of 32.4 billion Euros before taxes. Ne treasury guarantee or similar commitment was made for the financing of the project except 342 million Euros worth of international passengers, limited to the first 12 years of the management of the project, which signifies a symbolic figure in the total budget of the investment.

The award-wining air traffic control tower was inspired by tulips, which are among the symbols of Istanbul and bear a cultural significance in Turkish Islamic history.

As the largest airport of the world to be constructed from foundations up and under one roof, Istanbul Airport will serve with a huge capacity of 200 million passengers when all phases are completed. The project covers a vast area of 76.5 million square meters, on a topography completely disrupted by old mining pits. The first phase of the project was completed in 42 months, comprising monumental structures such as a terminal building of 1.4 million square meters, two airstrips and a 90-metre tall tower which won the International Architecture Award. Built with painstaking efforts of over 26 thousand people comprised of executives, engineers, labors and operators, and with Turkey’s biggest machine park of 3,022 vehicles, Istanbul Airport was defined as a monument of victory rather than an airport by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who delivered a speech at the inauguration ceremony of the first phase on the Republic Day, October 29, 2018. Completed in a record-breaking period by IGA, founded in collaboration with long-established organizations of the Turkish construction industry such as Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin, and Kalyon, from foundation up under one roof, the airport will have an annual capacity of serving 200 million passengers when it is fully completed.

PROFILE

“Mobi” – a pioneering brand of high quality, contemporary design furniture in contract projects

F

ounded in 1983 in Bursa, Turkey, MOBI is a manufacturer of high quality contemporary design furniture. The company’s founder, A.Rasit Karaaslan, is an award-winning designer and also the name behind the entire collection of MOBI. Contract Business asked questions to Karaaslan to get more details about him and his company.

Along with manufacturing modern furniture designs for retail sector in Turkey, you are also offering solutions on contract side of furniture business for 5 star hotels and high-end retailing stores. Can you briefly tell us about the milestones of MOBİ? Mobi is a brand established in 1983 and as a result of my career; it is involved in designing interiors, furniture; at the same time manufacturing them by their respective lanes in the sector. The brand uses a certain part of the production capacity on manufacturing original high-end design furniture and uses the other 24

January/2019

part for contract jobs. Being a medium sized business gives us an edge in terms of flexibility and percentage of production for these two separate sides of the business changes as per time and ground. This substantially provides a serious advantage in the sector.

What brings the product forefront is its design? Can you tell us about the design team who is the architect of Mobi’s success? I have graduated from DGSA, today known as Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, in 1975. I have over 40 years of background on design and I have always tried to be original abstaining from “imitation and copy”. The principle I have never

given up has always been that the products manufactured should have “original character and identity”. Today Mobi has its own design department in its factory. In that department my young colleagues are working with the same principle and the mentality designing original furniture for every taste in all over the World.

Apart from being the founder of MOBİ, you are also the designer of the whole collection. What are the fundamental issues you pay attention to when designing furniture? Previously I have mentioned about the subject of design character and identity. This is the indispensable 25

PROFILE

part of our job. The other notion that is equally important is that the product should stand the test of time; it should be a certain permanent classicism and it should finally protect its character over the course of time. When I am saying this I am not implying that the style should be classical; this is very important, I am talking about modern and contemporary styles which are the main line of Mobi for years.

How would you describe Mobi’s point of view to design? Being original and therefore being different…

What is the style of furniture you are producing? Which kinds of materials do you prefer to use in production?

26

The company’s founder, A.Rasit Karaaslan

Contemporary design furniture is the indispensable part of Mobi’s style. We are using natural materials when producing furniture. These are solid walnut, veneer, metal, leather and fabric. We do not use industrial materials like pvc, plastic, melamine chipboard, laminate. For finishing of the wooden parts we use acrylic varnish.

Mobi has an extensive collection developed over the course of many years. In retail jobs we can change the finishes and measurements of the products in this collection as per customer’s desire. If

When you look at your customer portfolio do you see more customized (tailor made) furniture designed for specific clients or more mass production?

January/2019

required we can draw projects from scratch, manufacture and make it custom made for the client. On the other hand; we can also work solely as furniture manufacturer for the built in projects. In the years passed we have manufactured furniture for luxuries residential and hospitality many world-renowned design companies.

What are the projects you have made for hotels, retail stores, residences and offices? Looking in retrospect until today we have realized a lot of contract works in many different parts of the world. A part of them is represented in our thick contract catalogue and we show this to our potential clients as our references and it is accessible through our website.

How do you see the position of MOBİ in terms of contract furniture business? To answer shortly; because of our production style, capacity and our lane in sector we do participate in high level projects. To give an example, four star hotel projects are not something we do.

How would you describe Turkey’s contract furniture sector? I can tell you this very openly; a vast majority of the furniture manufactures can only overcome the economic hardships through contract works. Due to its geographical location Turkey’s companies can participate in a lot of contract jobs in its neighboring countries; also there are also projects in far countries. Briefly; i can tell you that we are very lucky to be here. On the other hand if we are to emphasize the importance of the tourism sector; we can tell there is always a very big potential on contract sector.

What are the awards MOBİ has won? If you have a long past, the awards you have won can have a long list. There are many awards we have won whether small or big. I am not counting the ones we have won on Turkey here but international we have won “IF Product Design Award” from Germany, “Int’l Design&Architecture Award” from UK, ‘’INTERIOR DESIGN, Best of the Year’’ from USA. In recent years we are showcasing our products in Salone Del Mobile, Milano and our designs are shown as “Selected Design” among other selected products for the last three years. 27

PROFILE In which fairs are you participating in Turkey and abroad? For the last 4 years the “Salone del Mobile, Milano” fair is our most important fair. It is the best in our sector. We will continue only with this fair for 2019. We have decided not to participate in domestic fairs since the sector has been meaninglessly divided into two different fairs and lost the potential.

What would you like to say about your exports? In which countries MOBİ does export its products? Firstly i would like to say that as of August end; 76% of our turnover did come from the international markets. This is something particular for this year. Domestic market is slow both in retail and contract jobs. There are a lot of countries we do export our products such as; USA, Italy, UK, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Russia, Nigeria, UAE and Senegal. There are a lot more. We have sales points in part of these countries; Dominican Republic for instance. For the others we do have spot sales. In some others we have realized contract projects. Turkish furniture is bringing a new approach to world furniture production. It is possible to see them on many airports, hotels and residences all over the world. What are the targets of MOBİ in this direction? Yes. We are talented people. This is a gift of God. We do consider this gift. We are in a very advantageous position due to our geographical location. As a mentioned earlier our focus is exports and our aim is to maintain this, become more well known; both on design and quality aspects by trying to become a world brand. The roadmap of the manufactures, as in all sectors, is also determined by the tendencies of the consumers in furniture sector.

28

What are the changes you observe in furniture market and what do you do to integrate these changes? For years we are experiencing how we can survive on the level we are. Because of that we did not move into industrial production lane on purpose. We manufacture our highend furniture by using both modern machinery and artisanship of our people. We work with traditional methods in workshop style. We do have a quality certificate, design awards and patents. We produce items that are showcased in many big western countries. This year in Milan / Italy, we have opened a new showroom where we display our

products under the MOBI brand. We do have an agency and consultant for Italian market. Recently we have received a luxurious contract job in Lugano, Switzerland.

Can you tell us about your ongoing projects? Doing more work in European continent is our biggest target. In the meantime we have realized big contract jobs in Africa on high levels. If I may give an example; we took part in renovating the presidential pavilion of Dakar DSS Airport as per our contract with Limak. This project is still ongoing and about to be finished.

TAGO Architects loves adding original ideas to contract projects T

he founder and architect of TAGO, Gökhan Aktan Altug is an expert in highrise buildings and renowned for his innovative, modernist and human-oriented designs, rational architectural solutions and his projects make an impression on contract professionals. We talked to Altug about his major projects in general and about the Maldives Project in particular. With this exclusive interview you will have accurate information especially about Maldives market, pros and cons of undertaking architectural projects in foreign countries and inspiration sources of TAGO Architects. We want to know more about Gökhan Aktan Altug. Could you mention your education and career journey? I was born in Eskişehir in 1966 and I graduated from ITU Architecture Faculty, Department of Architecture in 1987. From 1987 to 1993, I worked as a lecturer at Eskişehir Anadolu University Faculty of Architecture, Building Knowledge Main Scientific Department. I earned a Master Architecture degree in 1991 from

34

Gökhan Aktan Altuğ

İstanbul Technical University Architecture Faculty, Building Knowledge Main Scientific Division. Then, I founded TAGO Architects together with Tatsuya Yamamoto in 1995. I developed projects for different functions and in different scales such as high-rise buildings, small and large scale house settlements, urban planning, public buildings, business centers, sports complexes, education buildings, health buildings, shopping malls, hotels, multi-use buildings particularly in Turkey as well as in Turkic Republics, Europe, Middle East and the United Arab Emirates. My various

projects were deemed worthy of an award at national and international contests in which I participated. In addition to my Istanbul office, I also realized various projects in my offices which are located in Dubai, Bucharest, Tokyo and Kiev. After the sudden loss of Tatsuya Yamamoto in 2010, he has been carrying out his professional work with a young and dynamic team of 45 people, who share the same vision as him. My projects, buildings, articles on architecture and interviews appeared in various architectural publications. January/2019

One of the successful architectural firms of Turkey, TAGO Architects likes to add different ideas, pure design and rapid solution to international projects from the tiniest detail to colossal masses. All of these details make TAGO different.

35

ARCHITECTURE

Could you brief your philosophy of design and architecture? Obtaining contemporary and sustainable results by converting designs into three dimension, which prioritize people, ensure their peace and happiness, meet all of their needs and, therefore, are respectful to the nature and environment. Which projects has Tago Architects realized? Which criteria do you determine your projects with? Having accomplished more than 700 projects so far, our office gained a reputation for projects which involve multi-use, hotel, office, hospital and education buildings. In order to ensure that our projects have, primarily, an efficient layout plan, we create a key scheme by evaluating our main criteria, namely orientation, main road and service setup, conditions of the surrounding buildings, height, day light and green tissue, etc. In line with these information obtained, we determine the transparency and occupancy of the mass and we give a direction to our design.

36

What do you pay attention in your projects? What are the essential details in your projects? All the details from the big scale to the smallest scale that complement our projects are important for us. Solutions and details that are considered in simple integrity and exercised with a single move and do not disturb people physically and visually have always been our target to demonstrate our expertise. Is there any trend or style that you are inspired while you are making designs? We try to follow the contemporary

January/2019

trends and artistic trends closely. However, we prefer what suits us and timelessness instead of keeping up with fashion in our personal lives; we are inspired by several trends or styles in architecture. We do not only aim to be followed, but also prioritize remaining memorable through our designs. What has your design team been doing for following innovations continually? In addition to monitoring the materials on the internet, which is one of the modern communication tools, they review the publications present in our rich library. But they still prioritize traveling, as the leading structure in architecture is require to be seen on site, touched and felt. What are the inevitable factors of successful architectural projects for you? According to us, a successful architecture project is the one that reflects authentic ideas, is far from being an imitation and has unique designs. What are the awards that Tago Architects won? Same as the different awards that we received for many of our projects and from different platforms, the most valuable ones for us are the positive feedbacks and satisfaction expressed to us by the people who use our buildings. You realize successful projects both at home and abroad. What are the pros and cons of undertaking architectural projects in foreign countries? Our greatest advantages are learning about different cultures,

having experiences and reflecting them in to our projects in a substantial manner. It also creates opportunities to meet with the right employer in terms of feasibility. Although we haven’t encountered many disadvantages, we can mention the challenges in terms of the legislation and legal requirements. What would you like to say about your major projects in general and the Maldives Project in particular?

Considering the extremely humid and hot climate, which doesn’t allow outdoor sports activities, it is designed as a comfortable and luxurious complex on an indoor area of 22400m² in Maldives. Although it is possible to come across good scenery in every region in Maldives, this project is positioned in the way that allows access to the landscape through an architectural passageway in the middle of the crowdedness that is attributable to the high-rise buildings in the project region. 37

ARCHITECTURE

The project which includes a big congress center with an area of 2160m², meets the need for space in the way to enable both international organizations and social and communal celebrations. What would you say about Maldives market? Maldives generally outsources its construction investments to the Middle East. In this context, the geographical location of our country again offers us privileges. If such privileges are used well, a new dimension can be brought to the relationship between these two countries in terms of business. What would you advice to young talents so that they could be successful at international markets? I recommend them to gain experience in different countries as from their studies, experience different cultures and establish friendships, knowing that this job doesn’t have specific borders and patterns and it is an internationally practical job which encompasses universal values. How do you evaluate the architectural projects realized in Turkey? When we consider that we are a developing country, intensive imitations and influences can be observed, as it is the case in music and similar fields of art. I think that we need more time for unique works. 38

INTERIOR DESIGN

Interior architect Melda Şengil – inspired by art, dust of history and beauty of nature The hotel design that I love the best is Mandarin Oriental. It is seen as a part of the nature. Among the hotel projects in abroad, L ‘Hotel Marrakech attracts my interest. Interviewed by Hatice Unal Bilen Photos by Hakki Gunerkan

by art, dust of history, mystics of museums and the beauty of nature.

Koleksiyon and Bilkent Holding were her first business experiences in 2006, following her return to Turkey from Canada where she lived for five years, Melda Şengil worked for a retail firm to design its more than 200 shops. She founded her own firm in 2017 with a motto of “run after your dreams”.

Would you tell us about you? How do you position yourself while looking at your life? How does your position reflect to your projects and designs?

We talked about her café and restaurant projects in Saudi Arabia and Canada which were inspired 44

I was born as a child of a family who deals with commerce in Istanbul in 1983. We then moved to Ankara when I was three years old. I finished

schools in Ankara and graduated from Interior Architecture and Environment Design Department of Bilkent University in 2006 and was employed by Koleksiyon and Bilkent Holding as my first business experiences. With an aim to recapitulate my experiences that I accumulated in many parts of the world I came back to Istanbul, Turkey and assumed a position for designing projects for more than 200 stores for four years. Then I decided to have my own January/2019

business and I founded Melinteriors in 2017 with a slogan of “run after your dreams”. I made several projects in Saudi Arabia and Canada.

Would you mention about your contract businesses projects as introducing your Melinteriors firm? What are the major markets and regions that you targeted? In all of 150 projects that we have realized in abroad we run after our dreams, inspirations and courage. We spend months to complete our projects and work. In the past we completed 230 points in Canada, 120 locations in Turkey and 5 in Saudi Arabia. Projects take about one or three months to complete

depending on the size, and then we start for production, application and construction processes. About 90% of the work we assumed in Saudi Arabia is made in Turkey and then sent to Arabia. The speed and cost of our projects are the main reasons to be preferred by Saudis. Next projects will be first in Dammam and Jeddah cities, and then in Europe.

What is the common focus of your projects designs? What are the most impressive points in your works? Mostly I design timeless spaces that are formed with botanic Renaissance. I design green spaces that carry tens of points from the nature. I mostly got impressed by the art, the dust of history, the mystic of museums and the beauty of the nature.

The most famous restaurant chain of 5 thousand sqm. in Saudi Arabia, The Sultan’s was a real success story of us as a Turkish woman as its designer and builder. It is impossible for a woman to get a job in a construction site in Arabia.

45

INTERIOR DESIGN

What are the criteria you pay attention while choosing among the project offers? How is your working style with your clients? First we do have brainstorming sessions among our team to review our relation with client in 360 degree. Then we design unusual spaces having maximum comfort suitable to the habits of people and to the structure of the space.

What kinds of materials do you prefer? Do you have outlier designs out of popular construction systems? I use natural materials in my designs at maximum levels. Wood like ceramics, concrete like plastics, stone like fibers cannot be a part of my designs. I enliven five basic elements in spaces that I designed. Even simple traces of saw make me happy. I use macro size of palm trees and natural materials in spaces as much as the heat and dryness of local climate. I don’t like to go out of linear systems and like to use organic form of the nature on moving items.

Melda Şengil

How do you interpret the trends of the age? Can you compare tourism architecture with other categories? I call the age “Botanic Renaissance”. ‘Resurrection and revival’ idea is combined with the nature. In every restaurant and café you are in, you will see elements having traces of the nature. On the other hand, tourism architecture is a field that is for long term and requires patience. In essence it is far from retail; it is a building that hosts restaurants, cafes, offices, meeting rooms, art galleries, spas and interior designs. 46

January/2019

What is your opinion about the restaurant and cafĂŠ investments while evaluating them from the point of a city planner? Is it possible to mention about an architectural solution that suits the constructions of the city? Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its incomparable beauties and historical texture. Is it possible not to agree by hearth with the words of Napoleon, “Istanbul should be the capital of the worldâ€?? Unfortunately there are incongruous structures emerging on the horizons. We, as the architects, should behave intelligently to prevent further spoilage of the nature by designing environment friendly spaces and structures.

Do you have new projects on the agenda? We are about to realize a new coffee chain project that is second to none in the world having a concept and content different from A to Z and we hope that everybody will like it. It will provide employment and can be called as a center of benefit having different social responsibility projects. Two restaurant projects are under construction in Dammam, S. Arabia. 47

The experience of more than 50 years in production of technical and decorative fabrics Elvin is evolving into a global brand with its young and enthusiastic team, while maintaining its respected corporate identity.

L

ocated in Bursa, the hub of home and contract textiles industry, Elvin has a solid history on production of decorative and technical textiles. The company has been working with the world’s most prestigious editor companies, and exports most of its production to more than 40 countries, including Italy, Germany, USA, Japan, Korea, Russia and China. Company legitimates its design success more than once with the world’s most prestigious design awards as Reddot Design Award and IF Design Award. We asked the details of the success story of Murat Canik of the company.

49

PROFILE

Could you give us some indepth information about Elvin Tekstil which is a recognized name in textile exports and a leading name in contract and project textiles with respectful brands such as Elvin Fabrics, Chanan Designs, By Elvin Kids and Sade by Elvin? 2018 was a good year for Elvin Tekstil Company. We have grown our sales number this year. By our international and local partners we have been doing prestigious projects with our new FR (fire retardant) decorative sheer and drapery collection. Another important issue for 2018 was that we sold our Chanan Designs brand to a foreign investor company. Chanan Designs does no longer belong to Elvin Tekstil San. Tic. A.Ĺž company. Chanan was a different business model for us. In this model we had a stock

50

program of our fancy residential products under this name mainly in the local market. As a manufacturer we recognized that it was a contradiction for us and we believed that we sell this business model and the brand to an investor who deserves it and gives it a better energy than us to improve

its recognition and image. We are still producing and giving service to the new buyer. Of course our support will be there as we give to all our customers around the world.

January/2019

Can you detail us about your product range offered to contract projects? Are you considering adding new items to your product range? As Elvin Tekstil, we always believe that we can add something special and fancy to contract market with our decorative curtain products. We always do R&D with yarns and fiber structures and we play with them through different weaving technics. By this way we believe there is always a room for building creative structures. Sometimes even in a simple item you can do a sophisticated touch. What features do you add when you are developing contract textiles? Our main idea under our FR products is natural look and relatively soft touch which may

have close feeling with real natural fibers. This is not an easy topic with synthetic FR fibers. How do you evaluate Turkey’s position in the contract textiles? Where does Elvin Tekstil stand in the Turkish contact industry? We observe that in last couple of years especially in the sheer product category Turkish companies have very strong positions. Primary reason for that is that the Turkish companies are innovative in this category and there is a professional human resource for curtain design and production. As Elvin Company we believe that we are competitive in terms of design, service and pricing especially on the higher segment Hotel and Other commercial Projects.

Can you mention about Elvin Contract products which are used in specific contract projects at home and abroad? Our sheers and draperies are used in many special projects from Cruise lines to Fast Ferries, from worlds most famous hotel chains to hospitals… Our specialty in natural looking FR decorative sheers and draperies are unique in its segment both in look and touch. We have a special equipment which gives effect and special touch to our products. Has Elvin Tekstil won any awards? Elvin has won many international design awards, Reddot and IF designs awards. Years are 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014… I believe we have proven our dedication to design by winning those prestigious awards. We witness many “Made in

s one of the oldest textile companies dating back to the end of the 1800’s, Ipeker started in silkworm business. The first step for further development was taken by establishing a silk processing facility during the republican era in 1920 and a weaving loom in 1930. The printing facilities have been operational in the years 1940 to 1950. All were the largest integrated silk factories in Europe and in the Middle East in those years. Depending on its deep-rooted past, the company keeps innovating and now produces vegan cupra fabrics for the needs of home and contract textile producers. Emphasizing on human health and environment, vegan fabrics account for the largest share in the production. We talked with Ihsan Ipeker, general manager of the company, about their Vegan Cupra sleep sets they recently exhibited in Sleep Well Expo and about their services for the contract textiles.

Technology parks contribute $3.6B to exports, generate $11.6B in sales

T

echnology parks across Turkey, which are being called technoparks, have so far generated $3.6 billion for the country's exports thanks to the numerous products developed and commercialized as the regime of import substitution has made significant contributions to the reduction of dependence on foreign technology. While the efforts to develop high-tech products with domestic facilities continue intensively, technoparks play an important role in the commercialization of these products. Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank said that Turkey currently hosts 81 technoparks, the first of which was established in 2001 with the Law on Technology Development Zones.

66

Some 59 of these parks launched technology and innovation activities and the remaining 22 will be operational after infrastructure work is completed. Varank pointed out that many benefits are provided for enterprises in technoparks, such as tax and premium exemptions. "As an indicator of the importance we attach to technoparks, we have provided TL 750 million ($137.35 million) in grant support to these regions as the ministry for 14 years. We bring together universities and industrialists, as well as theoretical knowledge and practice, through technoparks," he said. Varank stated that 5,150 technologybased enterprises are operating in technoparks with the supports and

incentives provided and that 49,332 people, including 40,000 research and development (R&D) personnel, are employed here. "Technoparks reached TL 63.3 billion in sales and $3.6 billion in exports. The number of registered patents in these regions reached 22,000. At this point, technoparks have ceased to be the campuses that only host technology-based businesses," Minister Varank continued. He said that thanks to the qualified services provided, companies in these regions grew faster and healthier; national and international investors made significant investments in these companies; and many strategic products such as domestic antivirus software, high-speed data communication chip design and high performance solar technologies were developed. The minister pointed out that there are also companies that received investments thanks to the successes they achieved as a result of R&D projects after stepping into entrepreneurship in technoparks. 67

Effects of design on success “Sales offices have important hints about both the quality of the project and the life style that they offer”

F

ollowing her graduation from ITU, architect Yelin Evcen first founded an office in 2004. When she met with Gonul Ardal, they decided to establish Gonye Design in 2010 by combining the first syllables of their names. Since then they began to collect awards from the country and from abroad. Since 2017 they have served as “Design Center” in affiliation with the Ministry of Science and Technology. Evcen says about their firm, “We are an indoor design firm aiming at satisfying people with their living spaces by developing, innovating and targeting the best in our work.” Contract Business asked more details about their success story.

What were the major projects of Gonye Design in the past? 68

In 2017-2018 years we have completed all indoor architectural works of design and projects of Nidapark Kucukyali and Nidapark Kayasehir, including the decoration of their sales offices. We made two sample flats for Yedi Mavi project that has brought us IDA Design Award of Los Angeles. Other works of our firm include several projects for several companies namely the HerDem Living Village in Silivri, Self Istanbul, Aci Schools, Transform Fikirtepe, Referans Bahcesehir, As Maslak, Nef Bahcelievler and Yalikavak. As office and showroom projects we have finished works of Gelecek Automotive, Egemer Mercedes, Decovita Seramic’s Spain and Turkey fair stands, antre café design for Oyun Atolyesi, a duplex apartment in Erenkoy and a private villa of 1000 sqm in Toskana Evleri. How far may the power of design be effective on the decision processes of the prospective buyers in real estate sales offices? Sales offices have some effects on decision-making processes of the customers by reflecting the vision of the investment company and the concept of the project and provide them more info by having a sample living space for demo to produce a real experience. It is not enough to tell or promote about the project. Demo houses offer several hints about the prospective lives and

experiences in the work offered to the potential buyers. In a well-designed sales office, promotional teams have been more effective on the decision process of buyers.

How do you see the general style of contract buildings in Turkey? Do you think that geographical factors have an impact on the spirit of the buildings? Since the buildings are designed and developed by the people their geographical characters may have some effects on the buildings they designed. Real estates have to be designed by counting on the specifications of the location in terms of topography, climate, and risk of natural disasters. Besides, cultural, historical, and social conditions affect the soul of the buildings. All are the parts of a whole, as it is valid also in other fields of arts, sociology of the community has some effects on buildings and buildings affect the sociology. They interact mutually. In line with globalization, geographic, cultural and social worlds are becoming more and more intertwined worldwide. We can see this on the similarity of the cities in the world. Those communities or nations who could not own their cultures and do not relate them to the next generations are zeroing their past, memories and cultures by pursuing a ruin-then-rebuilt motto under a trend called urban transformation after an utopia of a “new life. This is my answer to your question, how do I think about the soul of the buildings in Turkey. They are fare from the geography, history, culture, aesthetics of the local and made by contractors on costs and profits bases. 70

What are the major design styles that we see in common spaces? Different criteria are to be applied in the functions and designs of common spaces because they are designed for multiple types of users. Acoustic measures, ratio of daylight, heating and cooling needs are major criteria affecting designs. We emphasize that common spaces should be warm, humanistic and entertaining. We take some measures to adjust the scales of people and the space by using decorative articles. We love to use vivid and natural colors in balance. We prefer smooth flows instead of sharp contrasts. Durable materials are used on floors because of high traffic. We use different materials more than one on the walls for getting rid of uniformity.

FOCUS

Flame retardant textiles, inevitable for contract areas The field of flame retardancy has witnessed rigorous development in the area of new technologies, products and materials to meet the challenge and needs of ever-changing safety regulations and cope with the changing requirements of everyday use.

T

here is nothing inflammable in the world and fire is one of the most destructive forces on the globe. Fire cases are hard to fight and often impossible to control, and in many cases they end up with loss of human life, injury, and damage properties. Many industries have been working for a long time to develop products, methods, and processes to fight against fire and to limit the dangers and threats from fire, such as sprinkler systems, fire extinguishing systems, and smoke and fire detection devices.

72

What are flame-retardants (FRs)? Flame-retardants are chemicals that are added or applied to materials in order to slow or prevent the start or growth of fire. They are chemical compounds added to or otherwise incorporated into plastic compounds to provide varying degrees of flammability protection. FRs give the victims of fire more time to escape, limit the loss of life and injury, and protect property. World brands such as Trevira, Lenzing, Clariant, Sateri International, etc. have been

constantly innovating materials and solutions to complement the best textiles for fighting with fire. Flame-retardant textile products go through many processing steps that contribute to their overall chemical footprints and sometimes the final chemical residues remaining in the finished product. Flame retardants (FR) are chemical compounds added to or otherwise incorporated into plastic compounds to provide varying degrees of flammability protection. January/2019

bumpers, overhead compartments, and other parts of automobiles, airplanes, and trains.

Where are flame-retardants used? Flame-retardants have been used in many consumer and industrial products since the 1970s, to decrease the ability of materials to ignite. Flame retardants are often added or applied to the following products: Furnishings, such as foam, upholstery, mattresses, carpets, curtains, and fabric blinds. Electronics and electrical devices, such as computers, laptops, phones, televisions, household appliances, and wires and cables. Building and construction materials, including electrical wires and cables, and insulation materials, such as polystyrene and polyurethane insulation foams. Transportation products, such as seats, seat covers and fillings,

Many flame retardants have been removed from the market or are no longer produced. However, because they do not easily break down, they can remain persistent in the environment for years. Flame-retardant finishes provide textiles with an important performance characteristic. Protection of consumers from unsafe fabric is only one area where flame retardancy is needed. Firefighters and emergency personnel require protection from flames as they go about their duties. Floor coverings, upholstery and drapery also need protection, especially when used in public buildings. The military and the airline industry have multiple needs for flame-retardant textiles. The requirements for a commercially successful flame-retardant textile product have been given as meeting flammability requirements: having

73

FOCUS

little or no adverse effect on the textile’s physical properties; retaining the textile’s aesthetics and physiological properties; being produced by a simple process with conventional equipment and inexpensive chemicals; and being durable to repeated home launderings, tumble dryings and dry cleaning. It has been possible to meet these requirements for many textile products since before 1983 and our society enjoys a safer environment as a result. Progress is continuing in this field and recent reviews have highlighted advances in the understanding and chemistry of flame-retardants, but progress has been relatively slow and the advances quite minor and specialized. Two excellent reviews have appeared and should be required reading for those wishing to have a comprehensive understanding of treatment with flame-retardant finishes. This chapter will cover the same ground in a much more general way. 74

Designs challenging winter depression N

ihat Yildiz has been designing spaces especially for coiffure and beauty parlors since 2010. Having branches in New York and Bodrum, Nihat Yildiz says that his company has the largest showroom for equipment for beauty parlors and coiffures in Europe. In addition to designing beauty parlors as his expert field, Nihat Yildiz designs for backstage halls, kids coiffure parlors and similar other interior decoration works for both domestic and foreign customers. We talked to designer Nihat Yildiz about how the negative effects of the approaching winters can be minimized and what makes a good design for the life of people experiencing those designs.

How should the Fall-Winter decorations be in spaces? Darker colors entered in our lives while the autumn and winter come. The fuchsia tones are to be replaced by tones of soil that are more soothing this Fall. The need for contrast will be produced by using mustard shades instead of gleaming yellows, the brick colors replacing oranges, to khaki shades instead of vivid greens. The way to make changes in decorations passes through changing smaller objects. For example, you may prefer frames of winter themes that produce warmer feelings. You may also replace small items like trinkets with object that are reminiscent the winter. The taste of romantic and warmer spaces is maximized by using candle lights used as accessories. It is possible to make the spaces warmer with small touches by using small accessories.

“Design is so powerful that it directly affects the behaviors of the people who have been in the designed space. 77

DESIGN

How can we raise the energy of living spaces? Light is an important source of energy, so you should allow more day light entering in the spaces. Green plants produce positive energy. They produce a healthy and energetic environment. You may reserve spaces for objects you love, items that remind beautiful memories, and photos of happy faces in the home and work places. Candle light produces positive effect both with its scent and its soothing ambient. You have to prefer soft tone light bulbs that produce day light if you want to provide a warmer environment on the floor lamp, chandelier and lampshades instead of lighting from single source.

It is possible to expand visually the outlook of narrow spaces by using right designs? Firstly, lighter tones should be used on the furniture and wall in narrow spaces. Accessories may be used on the walls, as well as glass coffee tables, plexi chairs, to make the environment more spacious. Draperies mounted on the ceiling helps to make the environment is seen higher and wider then the actual sizes. Chairs that have legs should be used instead of armchairs without legs. TV set should be placed at the focal point in living spaces.

How deep the design of spaces affects the psychology of the people? Design is so powerful that it directly affects the behaviors of the people experiencing the designed space. Any building or the space that was successfully designed has direct effects on the psychology of people. When the daylight was not utilized effectively, or the lightning and colors used are faulty the psychology of people living in those environments deteriorates. 78

Kize Furniture makes its presence felt in international market Started its operations in a small factory in 1989, Kize Furniture shows its power in the industry with modern manufacturing site, which founded on 7,000 m² area and equipped with the latest technology.

W

e talked to Tolga Uludemirciler, one of interior architect of Kize Furniture, about the project-based works for domestic and foreign markets of Kize Furniture, which is getting ready to 2019 by increasing its export targets.

and now it has been a furniture manufacturing plant equipped with latest technology to tripple its capacity located in Istanbul’s Arnavutköy. When it comes to our operations we combine all design imaginations with the natural sense of wood in all places from individual living spaces to public areas.

Could you brief us Kize Furniture’s product portfolio and production capacity?

Our company makes project based production. For this reason, I should underline that we don’t have a specific standard; we realize totally customized manufacturing. It means Kize is always dynamic, ready to change and a solution partner. We have the feature of addressing to

Our firm was a small workshop when it started its operations in 1989. It grew in the meantime to be a huge factory of 7,000 square meters 82

special customers directed to hotels, housings and villa projects. Based on our past experiences our factory was designed and built exactly to respond the needs of the sector. For this reason all infrastructural works to be needed during operations were completed by ourselves. This, of course, offers us a lot of advantages. We have been continuing our works on team system. From the evaluation process up to implementation and mounting we have a quite systematic infrastructure. If you are going to progress systematically in manufacturing the observation possibility of all production stages will be very important. Today when a product is planned and starts to be produced we can see every moment of its advancements such as at which stage it is and at what position it is. In addition to our teams positioned inside the factory we also have teams in the field. The field teams stay January/2019

alert from the beginning of a project that they will mount and follow the product together with the manager of production team. In short, the field teams’ being our personnel provide benefit to us on right and appropriate delivery of the projects.

Which markets do you address in domestic and abroad? When we, as Kize, look at the projects delivered in the past and the ones have still been continuing, I can say that we are undertaking a lot both at home and abroad. In abroad, we have completed projects in countries such as Georgia, USA, Romania, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Most of these projects are five-star hotels. It is also eye-catching that we completed 15 branch offices of one of the biggest bank chains of Georgia under the name of “Premium Service” scattered over the country. These lead me to say that we don’t differentiate project-based works and we want to involve in all projects that we can handle. There are many projects we completed and some still in progress projects such as hotels, housings, stores, restaurants for our special customers in domestic market as well as in foreign countries such as Kazakhstan, Georgia, Montenegro, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates. Especially our participation in fairs and the blossoming of the construction sector in the Gulf countries we have placed special attachment in that region.

What are your basic criteria aimed at sales and marketing? I can best answer this question by highlighting that our most basic target is 100%customer satisfaction. This is not a cliché saying but a principle. One of our managers had stated many years ago as: “We never differentiate works as small or big. For if you don’t treat all works with the same strictness and care you will fail. And failure, in its turn, covers the success. Our principle is to offer quality, timing and architectural

beauty to your demand. Apart from this, our biggest priority is to deliver the work which will make customer happy and comfortable. This is the most pleasant thing for us.” At this sense, this is one of the reasons why our customers prefer us. We never consider any of our projects as only one single project. When we look at our today’s customer portfolio we see that we have been cooperating with many of them for many years. This proves the identity of the service that we render. When it comes to the answer of your question as a brief I can say that our sales and marketing strategy depends on customer satisfaction. As I mentioned above

every new customer continues to be our customer in the future and becomes a good reference for us for the future projects.

Do you have exports? 60% of our sales go to export markets. Our export volume increases every year. As I mentioned earlier we enriched our customer portfolio through fair participations we realized in recent years. We visit the people who we meet in these fairs in their offices or factories during the yearlong. This sets up a good opportunity to stay familiar and to strengthen the cooperation. In fact

83

PROFILE

we will empower our existence in Dubai through a new local contact that we will establish cooperation.

How did you set up your design strategy for this year? Can you evaluate the situation of the industry with expectations and targets while we are getting closer to the year end? While we are getting closer to the year end and I can say that we have completed various housing, hotel and special customer projects in domestic market. If we look at our case in foreign countries, as I mentioned earlier, we have a good part of our production for exports. We set our goals to increase our exports every year. We are taking necessary steps in order to realize our targets at this sense. If we want to cite one of these I can say that we are a member of TCF (Turkish Contract Furniture) UR-GE (development of international competitiveness) cluster undertaken by Expoters’ Union with 84

the support of Ministry of Economy for about 2 years. As a follower of all developments addressing to export markets in this cluster we attend all events realized. For this reason most of the projects that we have finished in 2018 are in foreign market.

Do you invest in the technology? As you know, the world is moving towards Industry 4.0 and technology goes to enormously frightening dimensions step by step. If we want to compete and reach our targets we have to improve productivity to

higher levels, increase flexibility and reduce costs. To this end, we have to keep pace with contemporary developments in technology. Both our factory manager and our teams and engineers are trying to bring everything to our factory in order to increase productivity in production.

Finally, what would you like to say about Kize’s general growth strategy, target markets and plans for the year 2019? As is known, as Kize Furniture

January/2019

company, we had tripled our production capacity and invest on machinery. With our growth policy and projects we got a position to serve faster and at higher quality standards. Today we have the latest technology machinery, a powerful product portfolio that is up to the European standards and the certificates their quality. OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, FSC and fire resistant door certificates are among them… In the coming years, our target is to be a good position in furniture industry in the region. You will see a great number of Turkish company who assumed several projects ongoing in the Middle East, in the Gulf countries and in the Central Asia. The experiences that Turkish companies have accumulated in construction industry in the world can be valuable support for the success of furniture firms.

“Export has top priority in our targets for the year 2019” Exports rank at top among the targets of our company for the year 2019. In addition to the Gulf and Central Asian countries that we already have very close relations, the US, Europe and the Balkan countries will be our target markets in the coming periods. We will put our efforts in order to get into new markets, to get new customers and to participate more fairs in 2019. We will take part in the efforts of exporters association who aims to open new markets for its members. We will be the greatest supporter and participants of Turkish Contract Furniture and production development project group. In summary, we put our efforts fully in all markets out of our target markets without differentiating among any countries. We may get offers for special projects from countries no one can imagine, and this proves that the world is getting smaller and smaller. Kize Furniture Co. Inc., as a Turkish firm, we will do what we can in all projects in abroad to improve our position in world markets.

PROFILE

A brand’s story comes with sound steps: Resaschemie F ounded in 2014 and succeeded in becoming one of the most sought-after players in the sector in 4 years, Resaschemie is increasing its contribution to the economy by exporting 100% of its production. Not leaving the title of being an export champion to Bangladesh since its establishment, Resas now attracts interest by paying attention to the importance of trust and health on an international scale. Working for Turkey's 2023 targets Resaschemi’s Founder and Chairman Laura Gök expressed the importance of exports using the following phrases: "While we are manufacturing in one of the sectors where exports are perhaps the most difficult and intertwined with the health we aim to have a wide perspective by evaluating our opportunities up to the end. For our country's 2023 targets, it is important to know what firms are doing and who increases their exports.”

Following their participation in MUSIAD fair, we met with Laura Gök, Founder and Chairwoman of Resaschemie, to get to know about the sector and its companies and get information about their 2019 targets.

First of all, what do you produce for the textile sector as Resaschemie? We set out to produce textile chemicals. Resas Chemie produces mainly printing paste which are used in textile printing processes for various images as a background material. Today, with our brand that was established in 2014, we are 90

Resaschemie was founded 4 years ago by Laura Gök. The company has a total production capacity of 800 tons per month. At the same time, in the first half of 2018, with an export volume of TL40 million Resas has become one of the leading companies in the sector in a short time.

producing in a factory of 7 thousand square meters.

Could you tell us about your production capacity and production volume? We produce 25 tons of textile printing paste per day. Our weekly production reaches 175 tons. Depending on the amount of orders, these figures go up.

"Printing paste is a must for textile"

What is this printing paste? Printing paste is a layer applied on fabrics before printing colors and visuals on the material. Printing paste is used in both rotation and octopus printing machines. It is usually applied while printing texts and figures on T-shirts. Printing paste is filled directly into the machine and as it rotates, the pattern you want is printed on the products in the color you want. Print paste is indispensable for printing and patterning in all kinds of textiles you can think of such as linens, t-shirts and pants. January/2019

main chemicals that give the pattern to the denim products. We export our products to various countries and companies. Most of them are mainly located in Bangladesh. We're entering to Mexican market. Our target for 2019 is to export to Indonesia. We are at the first rank in exports to Bangladesh in our own sector. There are many countries in the world where we can send our products. Among our targets are Russia, Mexico and Indonesia. It is difficult to export in our sector but with the importance that we attached to health and nature, we undertake the task of our production by exporting at international standards.

”We rank first in exports to Bangladesh in our own sector“ Laura Gök, Founder and Chairwoman of Resaschemie

Do you have a special R&D work on this subject as Resaschemie?

What products do you manufacture other than printing paste? We started to produce chemicals used in denim products. They are the

What are the basic factors you pay attention in production? Our product range includes eco-labeled products. Our production is 100% natural and our products are subjected to all tests required for export. We are one of the two Turkish companies in Turkey certified by Bluesign, a verification company headquartered in Switzerland. We have such certificates that are difficult to get including Bluesign, GOTS, Greenscreen and Tox certifications.

We have a new product, a dark floor pastry, and we are quite sure about its success. This product allows you to print any color on a black fabric. Usually when you print on black, you can't get a vivid color. So, we have done a lot of researches to develop this. Thanks to this product, we have obtained a product that does not have any fading and provides the permanency of different colors on black even after 25 washing cycles. There are great demands from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, which we can count as the heart of textile. Compared to other world brands, our test results are very affirmative. 91

PROFILE

You say that your products are natural but you produce chemicals. How did you put these two opposite words together? Isn’t it an oxymoron? As you say, there is a negative perception that chemical products pollute the environment. Part of this perception is true. We are doing our part to remove this perception. Our products are water-based and do not contain hazardous substances. As a result of our R&D research, we test our products both in our own laboratories and in different laboratories. We don't harm the nature. We do not put waste to the nature during production. When we wash the machine, we use recycled water in the next production.

"We bring the world to you through B2B meetings" At which fairs will you be able to promote Resaschemie? The ITMA held in Barcelona is the most prestigious and most visionary fair in the sector for us. That's why we take part in ITMA and MUSIAD Expo. As MUSIAD International Commission Director of MOU, we made serious works for the 17th MUSIAD Expo this year. We went to every country you could think. We brought a committee of more than 90 people from The Netherlands. The delegations from many countries such as The Netherlands, Russia and Turkic Republics came to the fair. Buying delegations and committees from abroad, heads of commissions and chambers of commerce came to our country thanks to the work of our presidents. In a way our business people don't need to travel around the world. We're bringing the world to their places. Our business people participate in various fairs, take part in B2B negotiations, keep in touch 92

with people. Business people should not step back of e-mailing, calling and, if necessary, visiting them up to the doors of the factory to find and persuade new buyers and customers.

The year 2019 is seen on the horizone. What do you want to say about Resaschemie's short, medium and long goals, objectives and targets? We are a company that sets goals for itself every day and gets stronger as we achieve them. We aim to start production of a different chemicals by mid-2019 in a production facility in Denizli Industrial Zone. In the new period, we will emphasize on foreign trade and logistics. Because people are afraid of exporting. In this way, the export potential of

our country is lost. Based on our experience with this step, we will say to our people, “Let us export your goods.” We are trying to do whatever we can to contribute to the vision of Turkey. Why shouldn’t we introduce the markets we know to other companies? As an example, the export data of Turkey to Bangladesh was dropped recently. People who know this should take the lead as pioneers in developing projects for bilateral trade, so that our growth rate will go up. It is utmost important for our country's 2023 targets to know who is doing what to increase export earnings. I would like to thank all companies and people who have worked and engaged themselves on this vision. January/2019

Ultra thin yet super strong ceramics in bathrooms of contract areas Appropriate for a wide-range of settings, IPALYSSÂŽ of Ideal Standard is beautiful enough to strike the right tone in luxury settings, including hotels, high-end apartment blocks, and restaurants.

93

PROFILE

T

he new range of Ideal Standard is inspired by Bernard de Palissy, the famous 16th Century French ceramicist, who relentlessly pursued the secrets of very fine ceramics. Like him, the company has been pushing the boundaries of design to produce ceramics that are very thin, yet strong enough to withstand heavy daily use. It seemed only fitting to name the range of elegant, super-thin yet super-strong ceramics after de Palissy – and so IPALYSS® was born.

The lightest of light design ‘Light design’ is an important influence in fields as varied as architecture, manufacturing, and fashion. In order to achieve a light design in bathroom ceramics, Ideal Standard had to develop a new material which could be used to produce thin vessels that were both hard-wearing and elegant. And so they produced Diamatec, which made the strong, thin edges of the IPALYSS® range possible. The IPALYSS® range comprises of vessels available in three versatile configurations. With a choice of overflow, no overflow, or overflow with deck, the range is a flexible and practical solution to the question of how to combine form and function. With the Diamatec technology behind it, the IPALYSS® range of ceramics is as durable as it is elegant. Appropriate for a wide-range of settings, IPALYSS® is tough enough to withstand demanding environments, and beautiful enough to strike the right tone in luxury settings, including hotels, high-end apartment blocks, and restaurants.

The thinking behind the design IPALYSS® combines hardwearing material with striking aesthetics. The look and feel of the range was 94

developed in conjunction with the multi-award winning designer Robin Levien. By working with Studio Levien, the designers and engineers of the company were able to be leaders in the ‘light design’ trend. Designer Robin Levien comments and interprets: “The lightness of the design is expressed by a combination of two key elements: the concave exterior, which makes a small footprint, and the extremely fine edge. The super-strong Diamatec ceramic material has enabled to produce an almost flower-like appearance. Looks can be deceiving January/2019

though, as these are far from delicate basins – like a flower in the wind, thin can be strong. As always, I am looking for beauty combined with functionality, and with the IPALYSS® design, I feel I have really achieved this. The thin rims mean that the maximum functional area can be achieved within the overall dimensions of the basins. And because these designs are ‘all basin’ and ‘minimal rim’ any splashes or drips can be contained within them. The oblong overflows, which are usually very difficult to produce, bring an extra touch of elegance to these basins, which are the ultimate in functionality.”

Beauty with inner strength Diamatec is the culmination of over 200 years of innovation in ceramics by Ideal Standard. The revolutionary ceramic allows for the first time to manufacture bathware with very fine, thin, straight edges that is nonetheless, extremely strong, and appropriate for a wide range of demanding environments. The professional comment on the new development by the company: “Diamatec, our new thin ceramic material, was developed following investigation into other areas where ceramics are expected to be thin, strong, and attractive, such as hotel tableware. We chose the best and latest technologies from these and other sectors, and precisely blended ingredients such as Alumina, known for its hardness and strength, and Chamotte, which prevents cracking and adds structural strength. The result is a new material that is particularly suitable for demanding environments, where the need to combine strong aesthetics with hardwearing durability is paramount.” 95
