Panda Font Booklet

Hello My name is Itay Bern, and I am an exchange student from Israel. Originally I study Visual Communication Design in Holon Institute of Technology. Since October 2016, I strated my studies in Folkwang University of the Arts, in Essen, Germany, for one year. My mother language is Hebrew, and I speak English pretty well. During the course "Summer of Type, lectured by Karl Friedrich Oetzbach, I learnt about the latin typography, and how to design a font, using a program called "Fontlab".

the story The Hebrew font Hazvi was designd by Zvi Hauzman, and was completed by Moritz Spitzer after his death. The font was established at 1954. On the one hand, the font was designed based on Latin Sans Serif fonts, and on the other hand was inspired by acient Hebrew letters form the first millennium CE. The font is based on both triangular and square shapes. This uniqe font was used for signage and publications. It is a modern, dynamic, and also Sans Serif, however, the letters has a curve at the top.

When I tried to do so, it did not work out so well. what does "GAS-HAGK" means?

For me it is almost impossible to see it, but for the rest of the class, who don’t speak Hebrew, the following group of letters looked like the word "PANDA. It is interesting to see how far can a shape go but still be recognizable as a letter for some. In my font, I experimented, how far can the Latin letter look like Hazvi, yet stay recognizable.

What I found interesting about the font Hazvi is that every letter looks very different form each other, yet it is very harmonic and elegant. I made some reserach in order to understand the font structure. I took the Hebrew alphabet of the font Hazvi, and analyzed each letter in order to have a better understanding of the angles and the writing direction.

I also simply printed the Hebrew letters and cut them in order to build Latin letters from them.

In my design, I worked firstly according to the rules that I found in Hazvi, and then I took a little step back to the Latin typography principles. Threfore, Each and every letter got its own treatment. I also added cuts (yellow), and I changed the stroke weight. What came up is a unusual and experimental typeface, that challenges the eyes of those who reads Hebrew. The font is inspierd by Hazvi, however, it stands for its own - the aim was not coping parts of the font or trying to create a Latin version of it.

my name is

panda Since my typeface is inspired by the Hebrew letters, I decided to design a unicase font: “An alphabet that doesn’t have different letter cases. This can relate to certain scripts (e.g. Arabic, Hebrew, Georgian), but also to certain typefaces where elements of a bicameral script like Latin are combined into one alphabet.” The unicase typeface that I designed has a combination of upper and lower cases, which is also influenced by Hebrew.
