Sarah Lorenzo is part of our family. We absolutely love being host parents and hate this time of year when we have to say goodbye. We’re his honorary parents in England and this is his home whilst he’s in England. We have students because it is enriching for our family. I have three boys and it is really good to show them what life is really like, how to embrace different people from different cultures and how to accept people for who they are. I am passionate about creating a family environment for our international students and always treat them how I would like my boys to be treated. We want them to feel loved and cared for like our own children. We stay in touch with our students who stay with us and they come and visit us long after they’ve left us.
Lorenzo They treated me like a son. All of them are just amazing. They helped me a lot and when I achieved good results in my exams, they were the first to cheer and congratulate me. I love them and I’ll miss them a lot.

Academic support Maria (Slovakia) The thing I enjoyed the most about Itchen was the teacherstudent relationship. The teachers are friendly, helpful and always cheerful.
Personalised university application (UCAS) support We organise career events, university open days and invite representatives from leading institutions to Itchen to help you choose the right course and university for you. You will also receive guidance from a Higher Education advisor, English teacher and your A Level teachers in order to write a compelling personal statement. Guest speakers from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge visit us in order to lecture on course requirements and application advice and we help prepare applicants for interview.
Our students benefit from high-quality teaching and a supportive atmosphere • A number of our teachers are A Level examiners • Weekly tutorial sessions and regular meetings with your tutor and subject teachers • Additional work available electronically via Moodle • Termly academic progress reports or electronic access to real time information regarding attendance and progress
We provide specialist UKCAT and BMAT medical test preparation for students aspiring to study medicine as well as support to find volunteering opportunities and one-to-one interview practice.
High Performance Academy We provide a tailored programme of tutoring, visits, an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) project and guest lectures for students who are identified as gifted and likely to progress to the UK’s Russell Group universities, which include Oxford and Cambridge.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) An EPQ is worth half an A Level and demonstrates to universities evidence of your real pleasure in learning, planning and independent research. It can take the form of a written essay, a project or an artefact about a topic which interests you. Held in high regard by many universities, some even lower their entry requirements for certain courses if students are predicted an A* or A in their EPQ project.

Zhi Qi ‘Bruce’ (China) My teachers were very helpful with my university application. My tutor helped me to improve my personal statement. My Maths teacher, the Deputy Principal and the Assistant Principal played important roles throughout my preparation. Sarah helped me out many times when I got stuck on questions whereas Vanessa and Steve gave me a mock interview to help me adjust to different ways of thinking. It was finally proved that their thoughtful instructions to my preparation gave me a huge advantage during the interviews and was deeply appreciated when I was offered a conditional offer.

Eugenia was offered a place at The Royal Academy of Arts in London but decided to go to The Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genoa with a work placement with M Missoni.
Eugenia (Italy) My exchange year has been the most amazing experience of my life! Firstly, I will miss my host family which has treated me as a proper member of the family. They have always been kind to me and helped me to understand the culture. They helped me when I really missed my family and tried to make me feel more comfortable by cooking Italian food and giving me lots of moral support. I will really miss my art teacher because he has always supported me and believed in me, my passion and my skills. He helped me choose the best university based on ranking, prepare my portfolio, my work experience placement and even found me extra English support. What I’ve truly loved about this experience is the way it changed my perception of the world and Itchen cultivates students’ dreams and helps them build their future.

Alexandra (Italy) I would recommend Itchen because it has been one of the best years of my life! I’ve found out what I want to do in the future and I’m doing a lot of things with my tutor regarding universities. I’ve learnt to be more independent and I’ve made friends for life. My host family is really friendly. They all made me feel very welcome and part of the family. I love them because I felt like a sister and a daughter to them. I’ve enjoyed all the trips because we explored different things and different activities. The international office and my teachers have all helped me a lot and whenever I’ve felt homesick. I’ll miss all my friends, my teachers and the way the college is organised.
Nicolas (Switzerland) I’ve been here for 4 months. It’s been really helpful for my English. It was nice to meet international and British students and find out about different cultures. In my Acting class I made lots of English friends. They were really lovely. From the first day, they were really open and took me in as if I was British. The teachers are really open too. I will really miss the atmosphere here and my host family. They’ve been really lovely.

Daniel (Brazil) I’ve met many different people who come from other cultures that have taught me many different aspects and values of their country. I’ll have these friends forever! My host family welcomed me warmly into their house. They are very polite, sweet and respectful people who helped me a lot with my understanding of English language and culture. Isabella from Brazil and Diana from Slovakia became firm friends during their time at Itchen. Isabella went skiing and saw snow for the first time whilst visiting Diana’s family over the half-term.
Maria I would love to spend more time with you. This experience has been amazing and I’ve grown a lot as a person.
Camila I have improved my English and I’ve made friendships that I know will be forever.
Students often stay in touch with their host families long after they’ve returned home.
“I believe in treating every student as one of the family because I would want my own children to be treated the same way if they were thousands of miles away. We do lots of things together. We bake cakes, and I invite the students out with us when we go out as a family. I’ve even taken them on holiday with us when we’ve gone to Cornwall.”
Gabriel I’ve learnt from so many experiences here but the most important one is how to be independent in day-to-day situations.
Debbie (host mum) and her husband in Rio de Janeiro with the family of her former student, Cheyenne.

Pre-A Level IELTS preparation programme (6 months)
Why IELTS is important The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is an English language assessment required for college and university entry as well as for visa purposes. Our teachers are highly-experienced in preparing students to succeed at each of the four elements of the IELTS exam. All candidates are scored on a band scale of 1 to 9 and generally, a score of 5.0 and above is required for A Level study and 6.0 and above is required for university entry.
Speaking
Reading
Students practise, individually and in pairs, the topics commonly used in the exam, such as talking about themselves and expressing their ideas in a variety of situations. Checklists of examiner expectations help them, both in class and out of it, even at home, and mock exams and feedback ensure thorough preparation for the real thing.
Students are taught strategies to quickly find important information from a variety of sources, which will help them answer the IELTS reading questions. Plenty of in-class practice, along with use of self-study material, helps them develop confidence and familiarises them with this part of the exam.
Listening Students learn the necessary skills to understand English in everyday and more formal situations, preparing them for the listening component of the exam, and can practise using self-study materials and CDs provided by the College. Regular testing is used to track their progress, including vocabulary and spelling.
Writing Students are thoroughly prepared for both writing tasks in the IELTS exam, by being taught correct essay structure, academic vocabulary, complex grammatical structures and how to answer the questions relevantly. Mock exam questions and thorough feedback, plus peer-marking activities, all help in familiarising students with the exam criteria. Teachers also use their own authentic material on currently topical news items, reinforced by quizzes, discussions and essays.
