My experience at Itchen has been amazing. I have absolutely loved it here. My host family was very welcoming and helped me with anything I needed. I have made some of my best friends here. I’ve loved making so many international and British friends. The teaching is amazing and challenging, the photography program is very difficult but very fun and the creative writing course is so engaging that I love it. I’ve learned so much about different cultures and how to be more independent and confident. Lila Like

Itchen Sixth Form College specialises in preparing 16-19 year olds for university study. College in the UK is the stage before university. There are no compulsory subjects at A Level but rather students choose a programme according to their interests and intended career focus. Unlike other education systems, British students spend thirteen years studying before going to university, typically for three years. International students choose to study A Levels because they are accepted by universities all over the world. At Itchen, they typically study a two-year A Level programme in 3 subjects plus English. We also offer six other programmes for students with different specific aims.

A Level programme
For academic students with good English who wish to progress to leading universities worldwide. Progress to the very best universities A Levels are recognised by universities worldwide and are the UK’s national qualification for 16-19 year olds wishing to progress to degree level courses. By studying A Levels plus English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and preparation for the IELTS exam, a good number of our international students go to top ranking universities.
Specialise according to your talents You will be able to choose three subjects from nearly 40 A Level courses, according to your interests and intended career focus. The depth of study is equivalent to the first year of university in many other countries.
Prepare yourself for the challenge of university study We will teach you the skills which are vital for exam success such as how to study independently and how to think and argue critically. Our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes will support and complement your A Level study and help you reach the IELTS level of 6.0 and above needed for university entry.
Combine with vocational qualifications where appropriate CTEC and BTEC qualifications (Level 3) are courseworkbased, recognised by universities worldwide, and can be taken on their own or combined with A Levels. They provide a more practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a theoretical background.

Pre-A Level IELTS preparation programme (6 months)
Why IELTS is important The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is an English language assessment required for college and university entry as well as for visa purposes. Our teachers are highly-experienced in preparing students to succeed at each of the four elements of the IELTS exam. All candidates are scored on a band scale of 1 to 9 and generally, a score of 5.0 and above is required for A Level study and 6.0 and above is required for university entry.
Speaking
Reading
Students practise, individually and in pairs, the topics commonly used in the exam, such as talking about themselves and expressing their ideas in a variety of situations. Checklists of examiner expectations help them, both in class and out of it, even at home, and mock exams and feedback ensure thorough preparation for the real thing.
Students are taught strategies to quickly find important information from a variety of sources, which will help them answer the IELTS reading questions. Plenty of in-class practice, along with use of self-study material, helps them develop confidence and familiarises them with this part of the exam.
Listening
Students are thoroughly prepared for both writing tasks in the IELTS exam, by being taught correct essay structure, academic vocabulary, complex grammatical structures and how to answer the questions relevantly. Mock exam questions and thorough feedback, plus peer-marking activities, all help in familiarising students with the exam criteria. Teachers also use their own authentic material on currently topical news items, reinforced by quizzes, discussions and essays.
Students learn the necessary skills to understand English in everyday and more formal situations, preparing them for the listening component of the exam, and can practise using self-study materials and CDs provided by the College. Regular testing is used to track their progress, including vocabulary and spelling.

“My role at Itchen is to allocate accommodation to students with a local Homestay host. I spend a lot of time matching the student to the right families who are able to support the student through their studies. “Living in Homestay is a great opportunity for students to stay safe and be given additional support if they need it along the way. High Performance Academy We provide a tailored programme for students who are identified as gifted and likely to progress to the UK’s Russell Group universities, which include Oxford and Cambridge. The programme consists of: • Taught programme • Learning mentors • HE+ Programme • Extra-curricular activities • Experienced Oxford and Cambridge application support • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), worth half an A Level qualification
Taught programme This is a skill enhancing, thought-provoking programme designed to further develop high achievers. Learners are given opportunities to develop their debating, research, analysis and problem solving skills as well as engage with guest speakers, attend cultural events, and receive individualised career guidance.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Undertaking the EPQ, worth half an A Level, allows you to explore a topic which interests you and present it in the form of a written essay, a project or an artefact. It demonstrates to universities evidence of your real pleasure in learning, planning and independent research. Many universities hold the qualification in high regard, taking it into account during their admissions process. Some universities also provide lower entry requirements for certain courses if students are predicted an A* or A grade in their EPQ.
Experienced Oxford and Cambridge application support • Guest speakers from Oxford and Cambridge visit the College in order to lecture on course requirements and application advice • Interview preparation and practice from your subject teacher
Learning mentors A learning mentor will be assigned to you to provide specific skills, techniques and the support you need in order to achieve high grades.
HE+ Programme This is a prestigious and selective programme, coordinated by the University of Cambridge, which consists of a series of subject-based twilight sessions and a trip to the University of Cambridge. Charlotte Leach, UK, Psychology of Behavioural Science, University of Cambridge
Extra-curricular activities If you are aiming to apply to high-ranking universities, we will encourage you to pursue activities such as being a student governor or contributing to the Itchen Student Union, which develops the skills and personality traits that admissions tutors are looking for.
