Dear CIO, Arkadin is proud to be associated with the NEXT100 programme by IT NEXT, a publication of 9.9 Media. We would like to congratulate all the talented future CIOs, who will shape our IT landscape and lead India into the next level of growth and prosperity in coming years. With companies today increasingly operating across geographical borders, multiple time zones and disparate corporate cultures, collaboration plays a critical role in an organisation’s business processes. Unified communication (UC) solutions provide powerful new ways to simplify and integrate all forms of communication and collaboration within an organisation. Strategic deployment of UC solutions can significantly and positively impact a company’s business efficiency and growth opportunities. The rising popularity of cloud computing, mobility and enterprise collaboration will drive a change in the role of the CIO and the structure of the IT department within an organisation. We encourage CIOs to actively embrace and lead the enterprise transformation enabled by collaboration technologies and position IT as an influential value centre within the business. We applaud 9.9 Media for this initiative to help uncover India’s future IT leaders and applaud all the CIOs who help make India the major destination for business in the region. With Best Wishes

Dear Friends, It gives us great pleasure to bring you the 2011 edition of the NEXT 100 book featuring India’s future CIOs. Now in its second year, the NEXT 100 program, from ITNEXT, is a six month long intensive process to identify India’s senior IT managers who have the skills, talent and spirit to become CIOs. This epitomises the mission of ITNEXT to help aspiring CIOs and senior IT managers to succeed professionally. This year the search process touched over 300,000 IT professionals around the country, and over 2,000 aspirants participated in an exhaustive series of activities that evaluated their management and leadership skills. A highlight of this year’s program was the personal interview of the shortlisted candidates by a committee of CIOs comprising the awards jury. This book marks the culmination of the NEXT 100, 2011 program. It profiles all of the NEXT 100, 2011 award winners and celebrates their entry into the club of India’s future technology leaders. Our congratulations and best wishes to each one of them – we look forward to their continued success. The NEXT 100 program would not have scaled these heights without the enthusiastic support and participation from the community of IT managers, the awards jury and the sponsors. Thank you all! Regards
Vikas Gupta Director, 9.9 Media & Publisher, IT NEXT

METHODOLOGY Buoyed by keen interest and breathless anticipation from the IT manager and the CIO communities, the process for identifying and selecting the NEXT100 award winners for 2011 got underway in June 2011 with a call for nominations. Through a series of mailers and print advertisements, IT managers were invited to apply for the awards. By the closing date, more than 2,200 aspirants had registered themselves for the grueling selection process. This year, the selection process for the NEXT100 award winners comprised three stages. First stage, applicants were asked to complete a self-nomination form that elicited detailed personal and professional information. The second stage was the testing stage, where award aspirants took special leadership and managerial skills tests. The tests were administered by Central Test, which is headquartered in Paris, France. These comprehensive tests identify the work attributes, leadership and managerial styles of the applicants. Finally, in the third stage, shortlisted candidates were assessed by the CIO jury panel. Each candidate was independently interviewed by two top Indian CIOs. The scores obtained by each candidate in every stage of the selection process was input into a proprietary scoring model that assigns carefully calibrated weights to various factors. The final list of award winners was created as an outcome of this scoring model. To ensure that the NEXT100 awards are completely fair and unbiased, no member of the editorial team was involved in the selection or elimination of the award winners, nor are editors and staff of the magazine a part of the jury panel. The NEXT100 awards program also draws on the expertise and contributions of the CIO community. Forty-eight CIOs, from India’s leading companies, who collectively represent many hundreds of years experience in IT and management, were involved as advisors and as interviewers this year. The jury panel deliberated and decided on the applicant scoring model, interview methodology, credential review process—and conducted interviews of shortlisted applicants.

PERSONALITY TEST & MANAGERIAL TEST As part of the application process this year, all applicants were administered two tests—a personality test and a managerial style test. Both tests have been developed by Paris-based Central Test, a leading developer of standardized tests. According to the test designers, these tests conform to the standards of scientific validation set out by the International Test Commission, and the American Psychological Association. The personality test, CTPI-Pro, provides an assessment of work related personality traits that play a crucial role in performance. The workplace competencies are conceptualized as “clusters of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are predictive of superior performance in a given job”. The competency scores in the CTPI-Pro are not a ‘direct assessment’ of competencies but an ‘assessment of proximity’ of the test taker’s profile with the profile of those who have demonstrated a high level of that particular competency. The assumption behind this method is that people with similar profiles will be more likely to exhibit similar abilities. The scores on each competency
also give an indication of the extent to which the person is trainable on each competency. As the scores are derived from an assessment of proximity to an ideal profile, they give an indication of the extent to which the candidate is psychologically inclined towards high performance on each competency. The second test, the Management Style Test, assesses a candidate’s aptitude for leadership and identifies their managerial style. Based on seven primary management dimensions (Innovation, Global Vision, Conceptual, Reflective, Affiliation, Intervention and People-Oriented), the test compares the candidate’s profile to typical management roles, including those of Chief Executive, Motivator, Project Manager, Entrepreneur, Expert, Strategist and Executive Manager.

ACCORDING TO THE India Climate Portal, India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world after China and the United States. As an industrialising nation, it is inevitable that emissions will continue to rise in the coming decades. India’s high climate variability, coupled with the ongoing warming of the planet, may culminate in grave consequences for both people and the natural ecosystem. Faced with such dire news, companies here must now take the necessary steps to contribute to improvements to combat climate change. India has participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project since 2006. Every year, more companies in India are disclosing their greenhouse emissions and making the pledge to embrace a low-carbon future. This positive move comes as companies accept the risks and opportunities associated with climate change and the positive effects it can have on their bottom line. No matter the industry or end product, businesses will be directly and indirectly affected by the impacts of climate change. That is why it is vital for companies to identify and act on green opportunities. Early adopters of sustainable business practices will find that through their actions, not only will they reduce their overall carbon footprint but they will also gain a competitive advantage over other businesses.
Climate change strategy need not be rocket science. It starts with a company evaluating and introducing policy changes to their existing business habits and processes. There are new technologies emerging daily that help reduce emissions: electric vehicles, alternative fuels, smart grids, advanced telepresence and conferencing solutions. As company policies evolve to invest in such changes, we can gradually achieve the low-carbon future we need. Of all the available options to go green, one of the most easily implemented strategies is to reduce business travel. Since the start of globalisation, transportation has been a growing cause of carbon emissions. There is no better time to evaluate the impact that business travel has on the environment. One easy way is to calculate your existing CO2 emissions by using a carbon calculator. The next step is to take action to reduce or minimise the environmental impact of business travel. A simple but effective business change is to make the switch to audio and web collaboration services. There are tremendous benefits to be reaped just by implementing audio and web collaboration solutions in place of business travel. When employees are empowered to work from anywhere and at any time, they waste less time on the road, are more productive and maintain a healthier work-life
balance. Also, the savings to the company are substantial, both from a business point of view, as well as having more content, less stressed employees; all while maintaining productivity and competitiveness. But the greatest benefit is the positive effect it has on the environment as carbon emissions are drastically reduced. Audio and web collaboration is by far one of the easiest and cost effective ‘green’ strategies for any company to implement. Arkadin’s conferencing solutions provide businesses the ability to conduct efficient meetings by collaborating online regardless of distance or physical constraints. By moving to remote meetings, businesses cut travel costs and make a huge impact on society, the environment and the economy at large. Arkadin is focused on integrating collaboration technology into existing work habits to facilitate and enhance business practices. When these solutions become a core part of the business rather than being just another complex technology, positive changes can and will be made to the business and environment. There is much to gain from a simple step in this direction. With audio and web collaboration being a far more attractive alternative solution to business travel, Arkadin is working hard towards spurring the business community into action by driving education programs that help
raise sustainability issues at work. Climate Care Day is a green initiative by Arkadin that encourages businesses to introduce a workday without business travel. This goes hand-in-hand with Arkadin’s commitment to sustainability. As the Indian corporate sector moves towards implementing green measures such as integrating audio and web collaboration solutions to its travel policies, it will be possible to see the country commit to reducing its emissions intensity of GDP by 20-25 per cent by 2020 (compared to the 2005 level) as documented in the Copenhagen Accord. This will be a significant achievement not just for India’s future generations, but for the world at large. n

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS IN BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING Communications is a vital part of business continuity, and solutions must be in place to stave off any potential losses due to disruptive events. — Arkadin Global Conferencing

S IN TODAY’S ECONOMIC climate, any downtime affecting critical business systems can cause irreparable damage to a company’s productivity, reputation and revenue. Both SMBs and enterprises have prioritized business continuity and disaster recovery as top technology initiatives over the next 12 months, and 1/3 or more are planning to increase their spending by at least 5% this year. Businesses are faced with multiple types of threats that can disrupt internal and external communications. Although pandemics, security breaches, and acts of war receive a lot of media attention, more mundane events such as infrastructure and network system failures are perceived as more likely by IT and business executives. Almost all businesses will need a robust, integrated and well tested multi-platform communications system as part of business continuity planning. Organizations are now exploring how global conferencing solutions can form part of the internal and external communications strategy essential to maintain “business as usual” in the face of disruptive events. Conferencing solutions can be used to keep in touch and reassure staff, ensuring that consistent messaging is maintained to protect a brand, maintain critical meetings with customers and continue to collaborate on projects.
Leveraging Remote Collaboration Services Between 2000 and 2008, there have been an average of 392 disasters per year and the average economic damage was $102.6 billion worldwide. The cloud of Icelandic volcanic ash which drifted across European flight paths in April 2010 cost firms across Europe up to €2.5billion and caused major disruptions to worldwide travel. People found themselves in unpleasant situations with limited infrastructure to support them. Using conferencing enabled some organizations to mitigate the impact by allowing employees to conduct meetings online. The ash cloud highlighted the need for organizations to maintain communications in the face of unforeseen circumstances as well as the need for conferencing solutions to be part of an organization’s business continuity planning agenda. Disruptions such as cancellations or strikes, although short-lived, can quickly impact productivity, efficiency and customer service. Having a contingency plan in place will prevent the continual drain on resources. Being able to move a planned meeting online at short notice can prevent its cancellation and enable delegates to operate efficiently regardless of their location. With a best practice communications strategy in place that includes an integrated conferencing platform, businesses can reduce their reliability on public transport and significantly limit their exposure to losses should
disruptions occur. Less reliance on transport to and from meetings also reduces wasted productivity time for employees and can contribute to a healthier work-life balance. Despite proactive planning, businesses will always face the risk of power interruptions or other infrastructure failures. Having a comprehensive communications solution in place that does not rely on a business’s native IT infrastructure means that IT downtime doesn’t have to be business downtime. Deploying cloud-based conferencing and telephony solutions as part of a comprehensive disaster recovery plan ensures that power cuts and server failures will not prevent people from maintaining communications with customers, partners, suppliers and other key stakeholders.
Business Continuity Best Practices Companies are facing increasing pressure to comply with standards for disaster recovery planning. In a survey conducted by AT&T, nearly 75% of IT executives indicated that business continuity is a priority for their organizations. On average, 6 7% of IT budgets will be allocated to support business continuity activities in 2011. Business continuity planning typically consists of three procedural phases: business impact analysis, risk assessment, and plan documentation. Continuity planners and disaster recovery professionals should
assess who will be affected by a communications failure and create a plan to mitigate the effects of disruptive events on the organization. Remote collaborations solutions such as audio, web and video conferencing can be used to: • Contact and communicate with emergency responders, employees, suppliers, customers, and partners • Activate and operate an emergency operations center (EOC) • Coordinate the restoration of normal operations Today’s competitive business environment means that companies have zero tolerance for downtime whether it be from natural disasters, cyber-attacks, pandemics, or power outages. Conferencing solutions are now being used to maintain consistent and timely communications over a range of devices and channels with both internal and external stakeholders. Providing clear guidance on what to do and what the business expects during any disruptive event will minimize the impact on employees and maintain customer relationships and revenues. An effective business continuity strategy must establish resilient, integrated communication channels. Conferencing solutions are now as essential when it comes to contingency planning as they are in everyday business productivity and collaboration. n www.arkadin.co.in December 2011 | NEXT100

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THE WORLD OF ADVENTURE There is often too great a temptation to say ‘we did it’ especially after suffering for days or weeks for our goal. Yet, it is the stronger soul who says ‘we nearly made it, but for….’ By David Lim

IN 1968, DONALD CROWHURST was part of a flotilla of yachts competing in a round the world race. After beginning the race from Britain, he began falsifying his logbook and radio transmissions to give the impression that he was doing well in the race. When his plan began to get exposed, he could not bear it and threw himself overboard. Only his notes and papers revealed the true nature of his ‘achievement’. A few years ago some climbers were written about in newspapers after they claimed to have summitted Shishapangma, an 8046m peak in Tibet. The team enjoyed accolades from their sponsors for “summitting” the peak. Then their claim was challenged, with focus on the fact that they had climbed a lower, subsidiary point along the 2kmlong summit ridge, and that they did not climb to the top, as claimed in the media. In their defense, the team submitted a ‘certificate’ by the Chinese Mountaineering Association that deemed that any team that climbed Shishapangma Central was considered to have summitted the peak. This, to some, flew in face of common wisdom – if one has not climbed to the top, then no certificate in the world, surely, can assist you to do so after the fact. There are some written ‘rules’ in existence in the adventuresports world, such as the English Channel Swimming Association’s rules about the actual amount of assistance a swimmer is allowed
to receive But in climbing, there are few written rules, but many unwritten rules that dictate how an ascent be categorised. More complex issues surround achievements based on doing something in a particular style. In order to distinguish milestones in a sport, you need some yardstick to sort them out according to their quality of achievement. By doing so, you can sort out the best achievements and those who are pushing the sport’s limits in terms of endeavour and skill. Climbing a challenging peak with minimal gear and support counts for more than a standard ascent involving porters and such aids. However, if people do not pay heed to style issues, such claims only serves to demean the achievement of those dedicated to quality results – very much like how people who have earned their doctorates feel about people who ‘bought’ their PhDs from degree mills with minimal academic study and challenge. John Barnes, Australian sociologist and author of the book, A Pack of Lies, reflects how society expects sportsmen and women to somehow aspire to higher level of existence – that they are above crass commercialism and cheating. But with greater and greater emphasis on sponsorship, money, the greater is spectator interest and higher expectations. And so, society is disappointed when a sportsperson is found wanting, or has been economical with the truth.
Ultimately, the integrity of adventure sports achievements depends on the ethics of their practitioners. There is often too great a temptation to say ‘we did it’ especially after suffering for days or weeks for our goal. Yet, it is the stronger soul who says “we nearly made it, but for….” The beauty of sports such as mountaineering is that it embraces all – from those who find challenge in a blank 20m piece of vertical granite, to those who like to suck thin air over 7000 metres. It also respects and embraces practitioners who delight in easy ascents with professional help, and those who push their limits alone on extreme climbs. It is the climbing community that expects that its practitioners be completely transparent about the style in which a challenge is achieved, and this expectation is sometimes beyond the common public’s understanding. What can we apply from the world of adventure and the ethics of style? In the corporate world, the lessons are simple: 1) Ensure your claim or achievement is beyond reproach or doubt 2) Be absolutely transparent about how you achieved a specific objective in the workplace 3) Respect best practices/definitions in your field of endeavour 4) You are responsible for your workplace and public announcements
The current game of climbing the really big peaks in the world, such as the 8850m-high Mount Everest sees fewer dedicated mountaineers aspiring to climb it, and more dilettantes or list-tickers attempting it for the privilege of having said they did it. The mountaineering world embraces all of them, although it does expect that the climbers be honest about how they did it as much as whether or not they got to the top. However, one rule remains is that the summits have to be reached. Exceptions include certain sacred summits, like Kanchenjunga, where for local, or religious deference, one might stop some metres from the actual top. But you can only say you have climbed a peak like Mount Everest when you have climbed it. Reinhold Messner, arguably the greatest living mountaineer, and the first to complete climbing all the fourteen peaks in the world over 8000-metres in height, said, “All the 8,000-ers have one, nothing else, and that is a main summit. No certificate issued by any man-made organisation can say otherwise.” n

BRIDGING THE BUSINESS COMMUNICATION CHALLENGE In today’s borderless economy, collaboration plays a critical role in an organisation’s business processes. Modern video, audio, and web conferencing solutions can dramatically impact a company’s business efficiency and growth opportunities. — Arkadin Global Conferencing

THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT today is converging more than ever before. With economies globalising and organisations sharpening their focus on core competencies, companies are increasingly operating across geographical borders, multiple time zones and disparate corporate cultures. The key to business success is effective communication and collaboration between individuals and teams. Although face-to-face meetings are considered to be the most effective means of communicating and building relationships, they are not always feasible from a time and budget standpoint. Traditional tools such as email and phone are cost effective and accessible, but do not provide a rich environment for sharing of information. They would be hard pressed to meet the complexities and demands of modern business communications.
Next Generation Business Conferencing The current ubiquity of the Internet and its associated protocols has made it the de facto universal communication network. More organisations today are leveraging IP-based voice, web and video conferencing solutions to complement and enhance their own telephony and email systems. Sophisticated voice conferencing systems can enhance the level of interaction between participants. Executives can set up virtual meet-
ing rooms and inviting relevant parties through user friendly web or mobile interfaces. With the provision of local dial in numbers, it is convenient for all parties to participate regardless of location. Web conferencing takes online meetings to the next level by allowing people to share, discuss, edit documents, deliver presentations, and even leverage video files and streams in real time. Participants sit at their own computers and connect via the website or a downloaded web-based conferencing application. They can also converse through traditional audio while simultaneously sending chat messages, making the overall communication far more interactive and enriching. With the integration of video conferencing and web, the workforce can be empowered even further to engage in face-toface meetings with co-workers, clients, prospects and strategic partners around the globe. The latest systems allow participants to engage through various end points including dedicated video conferencing rooms, mobile devices or a personal computer with high-speed Internet connection. These solutions bridge many of the communication challenges facing businesses today, particularly with regards to cost and effectiveness. They combine the immersive interactivity and productivity of face-to-face communications with
the efficiency and cost effectiveness of simple voice communications. Business conferencing solutions do much more than just increase productivity. It is able to expand organisational opportunities by generating business leads through improved communications with (and support for) customers. Companies can more effectively deliver comprehensive online training as well as facilitate networking opportunities through such channels. With the increased emphasis on sustainability and corporate social responsibility, the reduced carbon emissions from lower commute levels empower a company’s brand recognition while reduced travel improves employee work/life balance.
Cloud-based Conferencing Developing and implementing in-house solutions can be challenging as total cost of ownership can be significant. In addition to the upfront costs of purchasing and setting up a new communications solution, the price for future upgrades and continual staffing and maintenance to ensure a smooth and fuss free conferencing experience can be prohibitively expensive. For organisations experiencing a crunch on resources, an important trend is the rise of on-demand applications and the growing interest in broader cloud computing initiatives as
a result of growing broadband penetration. Cloud-based video, audio and web conferencing solution providers, with their specialist service focus, usually have a fully-developed solution with a menu of features for users to choose from. Companies get to enjoy conferencing services immediately with no upfront cost or time lag, and get the flexibility to customise-on-demand the optional services required according to current need and budget. Even for resource-rich companies, cloud computing provides the flexibility to deploy video conferencing as a private, public, or hybrid cloud, making the infrastructure completely transparent to end users while delivering a scalable, reliable, and cost effective video conferencing experience to geographically dispersed employees. On their part, solution providers find it is in their best interests to ensure a highly modular conferencing system which can integrate with standards-based IT infrastructure. It also needs to ensure reliable service levels which is disaster-proof to ensure roundthe-clock “always on” access for their customers. In time to come, cloud-based on-demand conferencing solutions will be a viable and effective way for organisations to harness the burgeoning potential of this important communications paradigm. n December 2011 | NEXT100

TODAY, IT IS more common than ever to facilitate or participate in remote meetings with counterparts from halfway around the world. What does it take to ensure that each meeting is productive, engaging and successful each and every time? Here’s a compilation of tips on how you can strive towards having that perfect, remote meeting.
out how to join. Most web conferencing invites have a standard invite template, make the best use of it.
Before you send the meeting invite...
Be prepared
Share materials in advance Do you have materials that need to be reviewed before the call? Send it together with the call invite so that people have time to review and give their feedback during the meeting.
Check for local public holidays or celebrations. It is potentially insensitive to organise an online meeting only to find out that it will be declined because it’s not a working day.
There is nothing more frustrating than being ill-prepared or having participants who are not able to contribute actively due to the lack of preparation. This can result in an unproductive meeting.
Be accommodating
Be on time
Is the proposed meeting time suitable for everyone? In today’s globalised workforce, it is not uncommon for people to work out of office hours. Consider the time difference when arranging remote meetings with a counterpart who is 12 hours ahead of you.
This is a timeless golden rule. Just as latecomers are disruptive to physical meetings, the same applies for online meetings. Be on time, and the meeting will end on time too.
Identify meeting objectives State meeting objectives so that everyone involved is clear on what needs to be achieved by the end of the call.
Send the meeting invite Does your call invite have all the necessary dial-in numbers? Is a password required to access your meeting? You don’t want your participants fumbling around, figuring
Be mindful of cultural and language differences If you have non-English speakers in your meeting, give them time to express themselves. Participants should be sensitive and not break into their local lingo. As a facilitator, you may have to help people from other cultures feel comfortable to disagree. For example, Asians typically do not speak up during the meeting, and prefer to ask questions only at the end. Hence it is important to set some time at the end of the meeting for Q&A.
Be conscious of the strengths that team members from different parts of the world can bring to the table. It is crucial to build up cross-cultural awareness for more successful interactions. It is also a lifelong learning process as you engage more with clients and colleagues from other countries.
Listen, listen, listen Listen and pay attention. That will ensure you do not miss out on important points.
Be flexible Things can go differently as planned, and you have to be flexible to work around them. Do not be quick to judge when things go wrong, and never react emotionally.
Be considerate If you’re calling in from a noisy environment, it will be helpful to mute your line unless you are speaking. Also, give your full, complete and undivided attention to the call. Avoid answering that email, or take other calls. If you find yourself doing these, perhaps your presence was not required in the first place? Or was it because the discussion moved off topic? Either way, to avoid wasting your time, as well as other people’s time, join the call only if you are really needed.
bring everyone back on track so that the meeting’s objectives are met by the end of the call.
Use humour with care Trying to inject humour into a call can sometimes backfire. Exercise some restraint with using humour to lighten the mood. You don’t want to unwittingly cause any misunderstanding that may affect your working relationship with others.
Conclusion With the blurring of lines between time, culture, and distance, it is all the more important to work towards ensuring the remote meeting is as productive as possible. Conferencing solutions today are but a tool. It will be up to you, and your meeting participants to play their part to determine the outcome, and success of remote meetings. n www.arkadin.co.in
Stay on track Is the meeting topic going off tangent? If you’re the facilitator, try to December 2011 | NEXT100
