President
GEORGIA is in the 4th year of her degree. She has been a DLSS committee member for 3 years now in varying roles, and describes it as the most rewarding experience in her degree so far to be able to connect with students and assist in providing resources and initiatives. The function of her role is to engage with external parties and ensure that the needs of Deakin law students are met and advocated for. She is further tasked with supporting and enabling the vision of each portfolio within the DLSS, to ensure a diverse range of events and initiatives are put forth to best support each law student on their study journey. This year, after an unprecedented 2020, the focus of the DLSS is to continue to bring students events and initiatives that allow them to gain personal, professional and study success, while ensuring that all students are supported by the DLSS and in the wider student community. Whether it be in a gradual shift back to on-campus learning, or with continued engagement in our many online events, Georgia hopes the DLSS will be able to assist all law students in some capacity. Fun Fact: She grew up in a small country town.

Vice President
SOPHIE is studying Law/Commerce and is in the 4th year of her degree. She is super excited to be serving as the Vice President for 2021! She has been on the committee for 3 years now, and was drawn to the DLSS because she was truly in awe of the incredible resources and events it provides. She decided that she had gained so much from the DLSS that it was her turn to volunteer herself, and now helps others through working within the team to provide ongoing support for its students. The function of the Vice President’s role is the internal management of the committee - this includes a whole range of things like implementing initiatives that improve committee wellbeing, overseeing the committee engagement, and setting expectations. To Sophie, her role is about making sure the DLSS is a welcoming and vibrant environment for everybody involved! This year, her main focus is to make sure everybody on the committee is supported through their roles. The different wellbeing initiatives and policies implemented within the DLSS will assist her in this aim! Fun Fact: In her spare time, you will find Sophie chilling with her dogs, Dudley and Gladys! 2
Secretary
CONOR is in the 5th year of his degree. Ever since he experienced Law Camp back in 2017, the DLSS has been something that seemed really rewarding and inclusive to Conor, and is something he has always wanted to be a part of. Starting out as an Industry Careers officer and now as Secretary, the DLSS has exceeded all of his expectations right from the beginning, and being a part of the committee has brought him so many amazing experiences. Fun Fact: He had a brief moment of fame on Millionaire Hot Seat, but unfortunately walked away with no money and slightly less dignity.
His function is to be responsible for the administrative management of the DLSS. He is in charge of the officer appointment process, onboarding everyone onto the committee and making sure the process is as smooth as possible. Throughout the year, he organises all committee meetings and takes accurate minutes of each. It is also his duty to have a strong understanding of the DLSS constitution and by-laws.
Sponsorship Director CLAIRE is in the 4th year of her degree. She joined the DLSS because she really loved going to the events and taking part in the competitions run by the DLSS, and while she had met some great people prior to joining, making uni friends had been definitely more difficult than she had anticipated. Her function is to work with firms to organise support and involvement in DLSS events. She's involved in all of the different parts of the society, and acts as the go-between to ensure all the events with law firm involvement run smoothly. She also reaches out to firms the DLSS hasn't been involved with previously to try to establish new relationships.
3
Claire has an extensive focus on improving her role, by working with Industry Careers to establish a strong basis of firms in different areas like family, criminal, and personal injury law that the DLSS can maintain strong relationships with. She also wants to establish a sponsorship agreement so that moving forward, the procedure for refunds is clear. Fun Fact: In her spare time, she plays roller derby.
MEET THE FINANCE TEAM JACK is in the 3rd year of his degree.
Treasurer
After Law Camp, joining the DLSS was really appealing to him as there were likeminded people with a genuine interest in making uni life better for students. His function is to manage the cash flow, make financial decisions for the DLSS, approve payments and complete the annual accounts of the DLSS.
His focus in 2021 is to achieve more structure and clarity in the role, as well as improving practices to make it easier for future people in the position. Fun Fact: He has moved schools 5 times.
AND ... FINANCE OFFICER: MACY
is in the 3rd year of her degree. She joined the Finance team because she enjoys finance and accounting, and wanted to get some real-world experience and meet new people. Fun Fact: She once spent two and a half hours in Austria at a bus border control when she was meant to be only driving through for 20 minutes.
4
MEET ACTIVITIES Portfolio History The purpose of the Activities portfolio is to run informal social events for law students to enjoy, as a break from their busy degree! The events also provide students with the chance to make friendships with other like-minded individuals across all year levels. This is particularly important from a wellbeing standpoint as students often struggle with forming connections in university.
Notable Achievements In the past few years, the portfolio has run events such as the First Year Law Camps, Mid Trimester Parties, Bar Hops and the Law Ball – all of which were very successful. It is hoped that the same successes, and more, will be seen this year.
2021 Goals In 2021, the Activities portfolio has planned an exciting year for students from all year levels to make up for missed opportunities in 2020. They also have a few surprises up their sleeves to make 2021 the best year for Activities yet, and hope to see you at their events!

MEET COMMERCIAL CAREERS Portfolio History Commercial Careers is a longstanding portfolio within the DLSS. Its purpose is to provide information and opportunities for Deakin law students who are intending to pursue a career in commercial law, or who have an interest in commercial law. The Commercial Careers portfolio is responsible for running events, such as panels and networking nights, to introduce students to aspects of commercial law. They also create and publish the annual Deakin Clerkship Guide, an invaluable resource for penultimate students looking to move into the commercial sphere.
Notable Achievements Each year, the Commercial Careers portfolio runs the Firm Insight panels and Meet the Professionals night. These have continuously inflated the career prospects of Deakin law students and improved the reputability of Deakin as a law school, as we are now recognised as one of the premier law schools among commercial firms. Additionally, in 2018, the DLSS won an ALSA award for the Best Clerkship Guide of the year, a publication which is spearheaded by Commercial Careers.
2021 Goals In 2021, the Commercial Careers portfolio intends to implement a hybrid method of networking, combining both virtual and in-person events to provide the maximum benefit to Deakin law students. They are also in the process of creating another fantastic Clerkship Guide.

MEET COMMUNICATIONS Portfolio History The Communications portfolio, originally the Publications portfolio, was for the most part auxiliary to other portfolios. With its new-found independence, the portfolio is responsible for developing its own series of publications, as well as blogs, social media content, podcasts and the DLSS’ website.
Notable Achievements The long-running Et Cetera publication is the portfolio’s biggest achievement. Trimester after trimester (excluding the weird T3 cousin, of course), the publication continues to provide new and original content and insights. In 2020, Communications introduced Damages Incurred. This was the portfolio’s first attempt at a regular, weekly blog. The reception of these blog posts was extremely positive. Damages Incurred has continued into 2021. The twist, however, is that this year the portfolio is looking for article contributions from ALL Deakin law students rather than just DLSS members.
2021 Goals The primary goal this year for Communications is to communicate rather than dictate. A lot of publications and initiatives are produced by the portfolio's officers and distributed to the Deakin law cohort. We would like to change that, and instead massively up the ante in seeking contributions and input from all Deakin law students. So, watch out for those Google Forms on our Facebook page, as we’ll be looking for some funny and informative contributions. After all, Deakin law students are hilarious and smart.
9

OFFICER: ANTONIA
is in the 4th year of her degree. She joined Communications because she loves the fact that it strikes a balance between producing very serious and necessary publications to inform students, and yet also provides enough humorous and satirical content to keep everyone sane. Fun Fact: She has an unhealthy obsession with skincare, the High School Musical soundtrack and the Real Housewives franchises.
OFFICER: SOPH
is in her 2nd year of her degree. She decided to get involved because she wanted to improve her writing skills and was really grateful for the different publications which made her feel like she was actually attending uni, so she wanted to give back. Fun Fact: She loves baking (so if she likes you, you’ll probably get a batch of her infamous cookies).
OFFICER: PAT
is in the 2nd year of her degree. She joined Communications because she’s a stickler for editing and loves the potential the portfolio has to enrich the learning experience of Deakin students. Fun Fact: She set up this guide, read 40 fun facts throughout the process, and still can’t think of her own. 10
MEET COMPETITIONS Portfolio History The Competitions portfolio is one of the biggest portfolios in the Deakin Law Students’ Society. They have run a large number of successful competitions throughout the years. The portfolio’s main purpose is to cater to the student body by allowing them to further their practical legal skills and receive quality feedback via experienced judges, as well as allowing them to socialize with one another.
Notable Achievements Looking back, the Competitions portfolio has achieved many incredible things in the past years. However, the most notable one has to be running multiple successful competitions during a global pandemic, whilst in lockdown.
2021 Goals One of the key goals for the Competitions portfolio in 2021 is to safely transition from online to in-person competitions according to the COVID Safety Plan. Another objective for 2021 is to increase engagement within the first and second year cohorts. Students who started their law degree in 2020 missed out on their typical 'first-year' experience. Therefore, one of their key focuses is on providing the 'law-school experience' by running competitions in person, like the Junior Moot. Furthermore, they are running a 'Junior Moot Seminar' which will provide an introductory guide to mooting, as well as presentations from past Junior Moot winners which will allow them to interact and socialize with their peers and senior law students.
DIRECTOR: MANISHA
is in the penultimate year of her degree. She joined Competitions as the Director because she was previously involved as an officer and thoroughly enjoyed her experience! Fun Fact: She prefers voice notes to texting.

OFFICER: AMBER
is in the 4th year of her degree. She joined Competitions to help and encourage other students to get involved in fun and educational legal competitions, in order to gain practical skills and make new friends and connections along the way. Fun (Sad!) Fact: Her exchange to San Diego was cancelled because of COVID-19.
OFFICER: CHLOE
is in the 4th year of her degree. She decided to be involved in the Competitions portfolio because it was Competitions which inspired her to expand her capabilities as a law student, beyond her academic commitments. It inspired her to escape her comfort zone, and she wants to help others to do the same. Fun Fact: She says she is not fun, because she is a law student – this editor remains unconvinced.
OFFICER: MOLLY
is in the 3rd year of her degree. She wanted to be a part of the team to assist other students to access industry skills and enhance their legal understanding. She also wanted to meet a new group of like-minded people. Fun Fact: She would love to travel around Europe post-COVID-19. 12
MEET EDUCATION Portfolio History The Education portfolio is well-established, however its purpose has evolved over recent years. It now operate under three main pillars – Academic and Study Support, Wellbeing and Exam Revision Sessions. It aims to keep these areas fresh and innovate to find the best ways to continue to connect with students.
Notable Achievements 2020 had plenty of highs for the Education portfolio despite the challenges of COVID-19. Almost every planned initiative and event went ahead in either its intended form or a blended/virtual model. They saw the introduction of the Pre-Penultimate guide, How to Law and Wellbeing Blogs and weekly wellbeing Instagram quotes, as well as the traditional established events including the Legal Writing Workshop, Legal Research Workshop and PLT information sessions. One of the most significant achievements of Education has been the successful establishment of Exam Revision Sessions. Piloted in 2019, these sessions have consisted of three subject seminars run by high achieving students each trimester and will continue in 2021.
2021 Goals One goal of the portfolio is to improve the way it addresses wellbeing and mental health for law students. They are reassessing the way they currently go about events and initiatives in this space and are working to create beneficial, targeted and relevant content to support students. They have converted the wellbeing blogs from 2020 into visual and engaging mind maps to be released monthly in 2021. They are also hosting an international Ted Talk speaker who will present on Useful Belief. Further, they will be hosting an R U OK? Day morning tea on September 10 to raise awareness of mental health and encourage conversations between friends and colleagues. It is important to them to engage particularly with both first- and second-year students who have not and will not have the traditional university experience. In Week 2, they successfully ran a comprehensive crash course event addressing challenges, concerns, tips and helpful information to help ease the transition into the study year as well as provide students an opportunity to connect with each other. In the academic domain, they are currently developing a Comprehensive Guide to Law School Publication as an expansion of the Pre-Penultimate Guide from 2020. This aims to bring together a number of helpful resources offered by Deakin, including extra-curriculars, study support, competitions and alumni stories and will be released in issues throughout both trimesters. The successful How To Law blogs from 2020 will be refreshed and released monthly during the trimester, every fortnight alternating with the Wellbeing Mind Maps. They will also be running the wildly successful Legal Research Workshops with Law Librarian Michelle Bendall in July. They also hope to run the Legal Writing Workshop in Trimester 1! 13

In addition, the Industry portfolio seeks to assist students in determining their own interests in the field and helps them build connections through our events.

Fun Fact: She is a pretty great cook (and that is because of Iso).

MEET MARKETING Portfolio History The Marketing portfolio is the bridge between Deakin law students and the DLSS. They are responsible for the brand and image of the DLSS. The Marketing portfolio not only advertises events and initiatives catered towards the Deakin law student cohort, but also provides constant updates in order to keep all students informed throughout the year.
Notable Achievements The goal of the Marketing portfolio for 2021 is to promote engagement. They aim to do this by receiving more participation and input from the law cohort, as well as fostering direct communication between students and the society. Further, they hope to innovate the way we market events to Deakin law students. They also intend to continue utilising newsletters in order to keep students informed.

MEET SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUITY Portfolio History The Social Justice and Equity portfolio is the newest portfolio within the DLSS, having been created in 2018. Prior to that, diversity-related events were handled by the Education portfolio. Since its inception, the SJE portfolio has hosted a range of successful panels and brought a host of initiatives to the student body, all relating to topics at the intersection between social justice and the law.
Notable Achievements In 2020, the SJE portfolio created the inaugural Queer Officer position, creating the first officer dedicated to representing the interests of the LGBTQ+ Deakin law student community. This role will continue in 2021 and beyond! The SJE portfolio has also brought some of the DLSS’s most helpful and memorable events to life - from the Volunteering Handbook to the Annual Gender Diversity in the Law events. It also fulfils the role of keeping the student body updated on contemporary issues and developments in the law, and discusses the legalities of topical social justice issues, such as our 2020 Panel: “The BLM Movement: The Reality for Australia’s First Peoples”.
2021 Goals In 2021, you can expect the SJE portfolio to diversify the initiatives they create - both in their communication and content. Continuing their focus on topical and interesting legal matters, they will be presenting a range of panels, blogs, handbooks, mixers and orations. They are also aiming to increase information about volunteering as a student, hopefully even planning some practical opportunities for students to volunteer, help out in the community and bolster their resumes. They aim to find ways to make all DLSS events more accessible to all students, and represent equity-related student needs with the faculty.
