Can a new OS and name change save BlackBerry? RIM, now renamed simply Blackberry, are hoping the launch of their much delayed new smartphone OS, BB10, can stop the continued erosion of their smartphone market share. Formerly the darlings of enterprise, Blackberry have seen their slice of the smartphone pie drop significantly over the last few years; a combination of the meteoric rise of Android and iOS, the growth of ‘Bring Your Own Device’ style corporate policies and the Canadian company’s reluctance to switch to full touchscreen, iPhone-style hardware.

Blackberry are banking on their new gesture based OS, paired with a range of high spec devices, to claw back some of those lost, email hungry corporate customers. But with Windows Phone also breathing down their neck, is this too little, too late?

HP Officejet Pro X451dw OEMs embrace Windows 8 and the funky form factor Since Apple created the post-PC era every manufacturer has been racing to find the next big form factor. CES saw a deluge of weird and wonderful ways to cram Windows 8 onto a device, as OEMs tried to differentiate their offering from the competition, not least Microsoft’s own Surface hardware. Want a Laptop that flips completely over into a tablet? No problem. A tablet that docks to become a fully functional laptop? It’s yours. A 20” tablet with 4K resolution and stylus input? Why not. It goes without saying that we’ll eventually settle on a standard set of device types that we’ll see gradual iterations of, whether we’ve already seen those devices or if they’re still in an R&D lab remains to be seen.

Big Benefits for Business How Dell’s award winning 12th Generation Servers powered by Intel® help reduce total cost of ownership, improve manageability and maximise operational efficiency. Design based on real customer feedback

S

ervers are arguably the heartbeat of any organisation, as they process masses of data generated by employees and serve up core applications which allow the business to operate and meet objectives. At the same time, servers represent a significant portion of any IT budget, which means that IT administrators need to be looking for technology that will enable business success through easy management capabilities as well as infrastructure and energy efficiency.

Challenges businesses face in today’s economy Dell is well-aware of the challenges that businesses face today, and designed its 12th generation of PowerEdge servers based on feedback from over 7,700

61% performance improvement on previous generation

business customers worldwide. Dell’s 12th generation platform is helping businesses to process more data, support more applications, reduce infrastructure complexity and facilitate growth.

Cost savings Dell’s 12th generation server portfolio powered by Intel® has been engineered to reduce financial outlay while maximising performance. A good example of this is the Dell PowerEdge T420 and T320 servers, which offer an affordable cost profile while integrating enterprise-class technology. By incorporating Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2400, these tower servers boast an increased computation performance of up to 61% over the previous generation of servers, meaning

Significantly cuts expensive cooling bills

that the entire organisation can get more done in less time as well as reduce IT expenses thanks to a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). This high level of power delivers both value and performance, turning data into business insights more rapidly. Dell’s 12G servers have also been designed to provide maximum processing power for a minimised cost, offering an increased performance per watt of up to 101 times over Dell solutions ten years ago. This is a result of Dell’s Fresh Air Initiative, enabling servers to naturally operate at a higher ambient temperature than previous iterations, cutting down on a hefty cooling bill. This also allows companies to house their servers outside of a typical “datacenter” room or facility if they choose, saving space.

Demands placed upon the IT infrastructure require administrators to make the most of every available resource, and companies continue to place a heavy emphasis on solutions that give them greater operational efficiency through advanced management features. These tools, such as Dell’s OpenManage systems management portfolio, provide one centralised point of administration over the whole IT network. The advantage of this unified approach is that it removes the unnecessary complexity associated with the reliance on multiple agents to monitor disparate IT solutions, saving valuable time and resources, and streamlining the whole process. Furthermore, integrated remote access controllers, such as Dell’s iDRAC 7, enable businesses to reduce administration time. By implementing innovative agent-free management tools, businesses can streamline, automate management processes and in turn make the most of their IT assets.

focus in the development of the 12th generation server platform, and allows for operational savings in the data centre while providing an energy efficient and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

While investing in high performing and scalable solutions is essential, keeping one eye on existing IT investments is equally as important. Platforms that enable businesses to integrate with existing IT infrastructures are invaluable, providing the crucial link with legacy hardware across mixed physical and virtual environments, avoiding unnecessary replacement costs. Ultimately, Dell’s 12th generation server portfolio powered by Intel® enables businesses to improve the delivery of business applications and IT services while keeping running costs to a minimum. Combined with Dell’s professional consulting services and portfolio of client, storage and networking components, this platform allows for increased efficiency, productivity and reliability to meet today’s business needs while supporting the growth demands of the future.

New from Microsoft The touch-sensitive, Cloud-connected and smarter Office 2013 February sees the launch of the new Office 2013, a revamp described by Microsoft and reviewers alike as the most ambitious release of Office yet.

So what’s all the fuss about?

16

The apps – What’s new? For starters this version is Cloud-connected, so wherever and whenever your users sign in to Office, their personal documents and settings are always available.

Save documents to the Cloud with SkyDrive, then access them from virtually anywhere¹ Clever functionality called SkyDrive allows users to save documents when working offline to a SkyDrive folder on their local PC. Whenever they’re connected to the Internet, your users’ files will automatically be synced to their SkyDrive.com folder. Once signed into Office, their personal settings and documents - including most recently used files, favourite templates and even custom dictionary entries - are all available, exactly as they last left them.

Access, edit and share work online from any device with an Internet connection¹ ² ³ The new Office works with multiple devices, giving users more freedom to create, share and connect in the way that they choose, be that via their PC, Mac or mobile device¹ ² ³. But that’s not all… the UK’s growing number of tablet and touch-screen devices are catered for too.

Most office-based workers spend a huge part of each and every business day using Microsoft Office applications - and that adds up to a whole lot of time! So when it comes to improving the user experience, Microsoft have really tried to pull out all the stops with Office 2013. It’s packed with a wealth of thoughtful features designed to make life easier for users and help them to get through more work, faster. And where better to start than the Start screen itself? With the new Office 2013, when your users start an application they’ll firstly see the new-look Start “splash screen”, where all their recently accessed files, templates and more are laid out in a really accessible way using document thumbnails that are very friendly on the eye. Speaking of which, it’s never been easier to read onscreen text regardless of device screen size.

On-screen text has never been easier to read Squinting and annoyingly interrupted sentences are a thing of the past thanks to Office 2013’s enhanced on-screen reading experience. Office 2013 makes it really simple to zoom in and out of content, whilst a simple touch can now be used to turn pages.

Collaborate in real time by sharing Office documents via the web What’s more, users can add a whole new dimension to their business calls by sharing Office documents and presentations in real time with anyone who has a web browser. They don’t even need to have Office installed! Each individual Microsoft Office application benefits from its own set of Office 2013 enhancements. We’ve outlined just a few of our favourites in this article.

Microsoft Word 2013

Office 2013 is optimised for touch-screen devices Office 2013 responds to touch and stylus as naturally as to keyboard and mouse, allowing your users to zoom through tasks on touch-enabled devices powered by Windows 8 and Windows RT4. There’s also some really cool new features like “inking”, which allows users to handwrite email responses and then automatically convert them to text. With smarter applications designed to help users create, read, share and connect to Office documents more easily and quickly than ever before, Office 2013 is not only the newest kid on the block, it’s the cleverest one too. Read on to learn more…

 Easily create engaging documents and work collaboratively.  Set yourself a ‘theme’ so whenever and wherever you log into My Office account, your personal settings appear.  Use Read Mode to optimise the reading experience, regardless of screen size. Moving forward or back in a document is simple, plus you can tap or doubleclick an image to zoom in and out, and use touch to turn pages.  With PDF Reflow you can easily incorporate PDF content in Word. By preserving formatting, you can quickly and easily re-use content, rather than having to re-create it.

17

Microsoft Excel 2013

 Discover intuitive ways to explore and visualize data and new depths in less time.  Flash Fill makes it easy to format and rearrange data no formulas or macros required.  The intuitive auto-fill will save you precious time by pre-empting what you need it to do. Clever.  Quick Analysis finds new and different ways to visually represent your data, so you spend less time formatting and more time gaining insights. Simply highlight cells, click Quick Analysis, hover over Data Bars (no need to click) and you’ll get a rapid understanding of your data in a way you can easily examine.

Got more than 5 users? Ask us to quote for Office 2013 as a Software Licence If you thought Software Licensing was suitable only for large organisations, think again. In fact, any organisation with as few as five PC users could enjoy access to the operating system and application software they need through a licensing agreement – including the new Office 2013. Software licensing significantly reduces the headache of administrating and controlling software usage, so you stay legal. With licensing, you can manage and control software usage across your whole organisation from one central point which eradicates the problems caused by illegal copying and installation.

 Recommended Charts will recommend the most suitable chart for your data.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2013  Quickly design and deliver dynamic presentations with ease and confidence.  You can combine individual common shapes into a single object to create personalised graphics or icons with the new Merge Shapes tool.  With Eyedropper you can apply exact colour matches without any guess work to create professional-looking slides.  With new Presenter View, keep your hands free by privately viewing speaker notes, upcoming slides and presentation time.

Microsoft OneNote 2013  Capture notes, pictures, web pages and media from virtually anywhere and access them on-the-go.  Easily add a presentation, document or spreadsheet into a OneNote notebook, making all the information just a click away. Even embed an Excel spreadsheet into a notebook, and edit it within OneNote.

Microsoft Outlook 2013  Communicate with important contacts and organize and manage email, calendars and tasks easily and efficiently.  Get an at-a-glance view of schedules, tasks or contact information without having to change screens with the new Peeks feature.  Respond quickly to messages, directly from the reading pane without having to open a message with Inline Reply.  Consolidate and automatically update contact information including phone, email, address and social media updates from platforms like Facebook and Linkedin with the People Card. 18

Find out how modern inkjet printers have become a viable alternative to laser for your business

ommon thinking has always been that inkjets are for homes, laser printers are for business. This however is no longer the case – in fact it couldn’t be further from the truth. Traditionally, laser and inkjet printers had distinct strengths and weaknesses. Inkjet devices were for the home, as they were generally compact, affordable and sometimes even stylish – everything the bulky office laser was not. An inkjet was for running off the holiday snaps or other jobs that made full use of their ability to print colours at high quality on glossy photo paper. By contrast, for a workplace looking to print large volumes at speed, and keen to avoid the worries of tiny paper trays 22

and regular ink changes, a laser would always top the shortlist. They were considered reliable, fast and professional, and robust enough to withstand the rigours of a busy working environment. But that no longer tells the whole story. Despite their strengths, lasers can be expensive to buy and run, especially when you consider the extras of power consumption and the additional consumables that, in most cases, must be replaced along with the toner. The world of inkjets has been steadily evolving, with several manufacturers developing business-focused devices boasting huge improvements in running costs, speeds and print quality. Today an inkjet is a viable business alternative to the more traditional laser.

Today’s inkjets consume less power than their laser rivals when printing, with figures in the low tens of watts rather than the high hundreds. That also extends to standby time, as an inkjet requires no power-hungry heating to get ready to print.

longer so clear-cut, and in some cases they’ve been turned into disadvantages by the unstoppable advance of inkjet technology.

Today an inkjet is a viable business alternative to the more traditional laser While text has always been a laser strength, the inkjets are catching up, with their high maximum print resolutions rising above most lasers. This means more detail in images, and greater sharpness and clarity to text. Plus, inkjets still have that major advantage of being able to handle the kinds of non-standard paper that would get mangled by a laser. When it comes to printing at speed, inkjets are making great strides. With no fuser to heat up when printing, an inkjet can be ready to go almost immediately, which is a big advantage when multiple users are printing throughout the day. For the common small print jobs, being ready to go quickly is half the battle. The reputation of the inkjet has changed beyond recognition over the years. Many of the advantages that used to be routinely reeled out when justifying the purchase of a laser printer are no

With a print resolution of 4,800 x 1,200dpi it’s also above most lasers, giving consistently sharp, detailed output on a wide range of paper types. And the WorkForce Pro can deliver the first page in less than seven seconds, which has a knock-on effect: testing with a four-page document against lasers capable of printing at 20ppm, that first-page advantage meant the inkjets finished first.

Epson cartridges come in capacities high enough for 3,400 pages from one tank – not quite at the highest laser levels but far beyond the line where employees find themselves regularly calling IT for replacements.

One range of inkjet printers that’s leading the revolution is the Epson WorkForce Pro range. Consuming up to 80% less power than their main laser rivals when printing – their peak power draw is just 26W, whereas a big office laser can draw anything up to 1,000W when the fuser is working.

Breaking down 10G Copper connectivity adoption barriers

A

s new technology adoption rates go, 10GBase-T, aka 10Gig Copper, has experienced a slow, but progressive uptake. 2012 was identified as the turning point when wide scale deployment would start to take off – almost 6 years after the standard was ratified. To date, 10G connectivity has often involved costly fiber based technology as the predominant way to support high-speed access to the backbone of the network, as well as virtualized server, storage and Data Centre environments. So what’s changed and brought about a change in expectations? Depending on your perspective, a multitude of factors have been cited as stalling wide-spread deployment, amongst them that latency and high power consumption make 10GBase-T a cumbersome technology. This is now set to change. Below are some highlights that will enable and support wider adoption as a result of progress made in these two areas.

Isn’t 10GbE Copper power hungry? Today’s PHY chipset technology provides anything from around 5 to 8 watts per 10GBase-T port, lower than the ~10+ Watts cited in recent years when compared to transceivers such as 10GBase-SR that can draw less than 1W. Drawing an increase in power by a factor of 5 can seem like an expensive upgrade cost. When factored against servers that can draw anything up to 1000W or more, the overall proportion is low.

M7100 24-port Managed Switch Additional power consumption initially points to a costly operation, but when considering alternative related costs such as fiber transceivers, it’s plausible that the overall cost will be less to deploy 10GBase-T. For SMB and even mid-sized organisation switch-server installations, ‘short reach’ cable runs of less than 45 metre will apply and use even less power. 28

Isn’t 10GbE Copper using Cat6A cabling a heavier, bulkier and less flexible solution than fiber? The better comparison is to pair more established Cat5e deployments with Cat6A, both of which can leverage 10GbE Copper. Consider that moving to 10GbE connectivity will also help reduce the number of GbE connections into a server rack, which in turn are also increasingly available with 10GbE connectivity. Even if you need to install bulkier Cat6A cables to replace thinner Cat5e, the overall number of port connections footprint will be reduced and you will save on space and alleviate power consumption concerns.

Drawing an increase in power by a factor of 5 can seem like an expensive upgrade cost A final and invaluable consideration is the role of autonegotiation. A 10GBase-T switch will be able to work and communicate effectively with legacy Gbit/s and 100Mbit/s server connections. For any fiber based systems that cannot support lower speeds, wholesale rip and replace server upgrades may be required in addition to 10GbE switch upgrades. Instead, 10GBase-T provides a viable and affordable investment path that supports incremental server and switch upgrades to suit evolving network needs.

What are the benefits to using 10G Copper? There are multiple benefits, but one that any growing that of Cat 5. Such networks can support higher bandwidth organisation would relate to is the need to help realise high-speed requirements that 10GbE Copper allows up to 100m using RJ45 network performance growth. 10GbE is no longer a platform connectors. Cat 5e and 6a networks can also leverage and benefit that only large enterprises can afford. The increasing adoption from 10G Copper, but over shorter distances of up to 45 and of 10GbE Copper NIC 55m respectively. Backwards adapters by server and storage compatibility with 100M/bit There are multiple benefits, but one vendors is opening up the and Gigabit networks allows that any growing organisation would relate for a cost effective and simpler opportunity for 10GbE to is the need to help realise high-speed connectivity deployment for upgrade path to 10 Gigabit customers of all sizes. 10GbE Ethernet. network performance growth. copper price points are also A third area is the more attractive than ever before - reaching similar price points as ability to extend support for converged environments. Network Gigabit solutions from a price per Gbit/s perspective. Now is the performance bottleneck risks are growing. Bandwidth demand time to deliver reliable, affordable and simple 10GbE networking is rising to support intensive new applications, along with the connectivity beyond the core of the network. proliferation of data replication and the widespread adoption of A second area is the ability to leverage existing infrastructure mobility, server and storage virtualization. All these combine to copper cabling investments. If you have an existing network drive the need for 10 Gigabit solutions. The increase in video and infrastructure running Cat 6A or 7 cabling, then you will clearly mobile data alone is placing limitations on Gigabit networks as benefit from the copper wiring being of a higher grade than more devices, users and content fight for traffic prioritisation.

New 10GbE Copper Switches The NETGEAR ProSafe 24-Port 10 Gigabit Copper M7100 series Managed Switch is the world’s first cost-effective 10GBASE-T departmental solution. The M7100 series is ideal for installations requiring reliable, affordable and simple 10 Gigabit Ethernet top-of-rack server access layer in enterprise and campus-style networks and for high-density, high-performance 10GbE aggregation. The M7100 series consists of a fully managed, low-latency, line-rate 10GbE copper BASE-T switch solution; 24 ports of 10GBASE-T (RJ45) interfaces that support Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit speeds for server, storage and network progressive upgrade; and four ports of SFP+ interfaces that broaden 10 Gigabit connectivity for 1GbE/10GbE fiber uplinks and other DAC connections. “Until now, 10 Gigabit switching has been only an unattainable pipe dream for small and medium-sized networks due to the high cost of entry. But 10GBASE-T provides growing networks a migration path to newer technologies while preserving current hardware investments, a perfect match to meet the cost and performance requirements of growing businesses and other organizations,” explained Peter Newton, senior director of NETGEAR product management for Commercial Business.

He added, “NETGEAR 10 Gigabit switch solutions combine the latest advances in hardware and software engineering for higher availability, lower latency and power consumption and stronger security, at industry-leading, breakthrough price points. The switches enable us to offer a complete portfolio of 10 Gigabit solutions, spanning small server clusters to network aggregation, and from workgroup labs to network backbones. NETGEAR is already a leading provider for Unmanaged and Smart Switches; our first-to-market advantage in 10GBASE-T switches positions us as leaders in 10GbE switches as well.” For network connectivity, 10GBase-T, like other base-t technologies, uses the standard RJ45 Ethernet jack. This connection form factor is not only common on switches, but is also normally integrated onto servers, workstations and other PCs. Base-T usually runs up to a 100 meters, on the widely deployed, twisted pair copper cabling, such as Cat 6A type, and now more recently Cat 7 type. It is also backward compatible, autonegotiating between higher and lower speeds – thereby not forcing an all at once network equipment upgrade. The NETGEAR M7100 series is the world-first realistic, cost-effective 10GBase-T departmental solution!

NETGEAR is the first networking provider to deliver 10 Gigabit copper (10GBase-T) switching solutions spanning the lightly managed, smart and fully managed categories.

Find out how you could maximise tight IT budgets by moving to a virtualised environment

Accelerate your business with Virtualisation More efficient IT throughout the lifecycle with Fujitsu PRIMERGY

T

here are a number of demands that businesses are increasingly putting on IT which need to be fulfilled under a tight budget. These include: • Greater efficiency • Faster Time To Market • High availability • Data growth • Fluctuating business requirements Moving from a traditional, silo-based architecture towards a shared, virtualised environment is a key strategy in dealing with these demands. Moreover a virtualised IT architecture lowers Total Cost of Ownership, improves responsiveness and simplifies management.

This is because it allows for a better utilisation of all the processor cores available than conventional software architectures allow, providing the greater efficiencies demanded by the business as well as responding to the challenges posed by data growth. By abstracting the infrastructure presented to the operating system from the physical hardware itself the restrictions of any given physical server are superseded.

This allows for high availability by migrating workloads from a failed host to an available one, together with the flexibility, agility and speed of rollout. Having decided that virtualisation is the way to go, at least for the majority of workloads, a number of challenges present themselves: • Managing multiple vendors • Lack of internal skills and trained resources • Time, cost and risk It is therefore essential for any business considering moving to this model to work with the right partner to benefit from best practice, mitigate risk and maximise the effectiveness of the solution.

With the current proliferation of multi-core x86 servers, a virtualised infrastructure is all the more critical.

Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers are optimised for virtualisation, regularly hitting the number 1 spot on the VMmark benchmark, including various dual socket as well as quad socket servers. Fujitsu have a range of appliances and reference architectures covering both VMware and Hyper-V that allow customers to quickly deploy best practice virtualisations solutions that work out of the box and deliver optimal value for money. 32

Fujitsu vShape 25 for example is the ideal solution for businesses wanting to consolidate 25 servers onto a centralised virtual platform based on VMware. This, combined with Fujitsu’s world-record breaking energy efficiency and stringent quality control, results in significant Total Cost of Ownership savings on an infrastructure providing maximum performance and reliability.
