Ricky Koole

Ricky Koole, actrice and performer “Storytelling.” That’s how actress and singer Ricky Koole defines her career, be it on stage or on screen. She explains how it can be difficult to practise two different arts. “It is hard to keep the energy at a high, but I don’t see them as two professions. Both of them demand that I tell stories. Both are a form of theatre.” Ricky tells me how she likes creating a story with her songs, and for the show to have its own dramatic time line which she

shapes with her own ideas. “In film you are a tool for creating what the director is envisaging, but on stage I can make my own stories.” We talk about what it´s like for Ricky to return to ITs Festival, having performed here 19 years ago. “So much has changed since then.

I remember how I had no idea of what would become of me! What I wanted to do was hard, but I made it. Being here makes me realise that this achievement is something to be proud of.” (JS)

The Kliché Manifesto preview

Kliché, 25 & 26 June, Venue Cruquiusweg, 8pm.

“With this performance I’m trying to coin clichés as universal truths,” says Joost van Hezik, student at Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and director of Kliché. “A cliché however, is a hollow truth which can’t be trusted.” The question rises in what way our generation can be capable of idealism. “Nothing interests us anymore,” says Van Hezik.

“Do we still have the ability to believe and stick by that belief?” Barack Obama’s election has really affected him and influenced his work. “I thought: if they can achieve it, we definitely can. And ever since, my work has become much more engaged.” Kliché is more than a play; it is a manifesto. A spectacular production involving six young actors, installations

and soundscapes – produced and performed in a storage building at Cruquiusweg.

There is a scene in the play in which the actors tear the stage apart to the rhythm of a housebeat. “It’s not that that’s what Kliché is about,” Van Hezik says. “But it is one of the attempts to live up to a cliché.

To tear everything apart, and then build it back up.” (EH)

Sometimes people don’t show up in time to claim their reservations, and tickets will still be available.

ANDREW LORETTO Since 2004, I have been closely involved with what is now known as the International Young Makers’ Exchange. The IYME is coordinated by ITs Festival in collaboration with European partners and has received EU funding to develop exchanges, touring and the International Ensemble – which I’m delighted to be facilitating in Amsterdam this week. In 2010, the need for international creative dialogue is more urgent than ever. Economic challenges hitting Europe are resulting in separatist voices being heard more loudly. Countries are starting to play a dangerous ‘blame game’. Recent election results in the UK and Netherlands have produced mixed results – with increased support for Euro-sceptic parties, alongside strong support for those who advocate increased internationalism.

In times of political and social uncertainty, theatre and performance can and must reflect the voices of our peoples and challenge xenophobic thinking. International cultural collaboration is vital in developing healthy, outward looking societies. Whatever funding or political challenges we face in the future, the IYME and festivals like ITs will help light our paths.

KOM OP! GA AF! “Phew! Heavy stuff, this theatre text by Babiche Ronday (HKU). It was so sad. Not just the suicide theme, but also its gentle performance, beautiful music and the tranquil style as well. This made it impossible not to be moved, but I would have preferred something a little more light-hearted. I thought that the use of puppets was an extraordinary choice, but that did make it easier to digest. This was a ‘writing for performance’ presentation, but it came very close to mime.

There were so many punctilious shapes and movements that I couldn’t distinguish theatre text from stage directions. I was secretly hoping that the dove, which appeared at the start of the performance, would return. But the writer apparently refused to includes any possible ray of hope.”

INSTED@Its, part four!

Today we present the fourth edition of the INSTED@ITs programme. The International Network of Students in Theatre Directing and ITs Festival have invited a group of thirty Dutch and foreign students to participate in a very intense and challenging programme. Together, these up and coming directors will get the chance to experience the work of their fellow graduating students.

This year’s foreign delegation comprises people from Iran, Israel, Great Britain, Germany, Kosovo, Serbia and Austria. Exchange is the keyword of INSTED@ITs. Every morning the group will, together with the director, review the plays they saw the day before. These ‘morning-after’ talks will be moderated by one of the INSTED dramaturges and a guest speaker. Furthermore,

six up and coming Dutch and Flemish theatre makers have organized a closing debate about the current challenges for young directors in today’s (theatre) world. After a very busy week of plays, debates, talks and parties, we hope that all participating directors will have inspired each other with their views on the very future of theatre.

Come and check out DJ Dirk Diggler today, 25 June at the Compagnietheater. The action starts at 11pm. Diggler sets himself apart from a lot of his rivals because of his experience spinning in the most diverse of venues. He went from The Lowlands Festival, and Café DEP, to being a resident DJ at Paradiso. And from Timoektoe, via the Winston to the Blauwe Theehuis in the Vondelpark. Here’s a pop

UNTITLED Review

Tim Persent, the artistic leader dance of the ITs Festival, gathered five incredible choreographers for one magic night. Five performances took to the ‘naked black box’ stage of Theater Frascati for a mind-blowing programme. I was driven on a journey raging from – or going back to? – animalistic movement, combined with the sensuality of Spanish songs (Volver, Koldo Arostegui), moving into universal and individual autistic worlds (Autistic Movement, Rodrigo Sabrazo), witnessing the war between the body and the mind, and saw all the absurdity and tribulations of the male-female relationship in an Ionesco-like manner (An exclamation of surprise or incredulity, William Collins). I was fascinated by incredibly interesting use of sound and light (27 scenes, Chun-ho Lam), until for a moment it seemed like the whole audience stopped thinking, and started feeling (7th solo, Michele Rizzo). Sabrazo’s repetitive patterns of movement entered that sphere of ritual, where one fights the eternal fight of body and mind. Rizzo’s 7th solo was especially touching. The actor’s monologue at first made audience laugh, just to end up shocked by the sudden crying. This night offered dynamic, innovative and non-compromising theatre. (AL)

Spitting, drooling, burping, foul mouthing, covered in grease and amidst piles of rubbish three men welcome the homecoming of their neatly dressed brother, son and nephew Teddy, respectively. Only then they find out that he has been married for six years. Yet, bringing his wife home turns out to be a minor mistake when she wilfully complies with his family members’ attempts to chat her up. Her compliance is confusing. In the blink of an eye this bashful lady transforms into a manipulative slag: a very sudden twist of events, which keeps eating at you throughout the performance as her real self remains hidden. Untitled by Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen – based on Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming – has an enjoyable absurdist flavour. Teddy’s depraved white trash family, this embarrassment during the whole ordeal, and the – not always entirely functional – expression of male nudity are all very funny. Unfortunately the play turns into a farce when near the end – again – the pants come down, which sadly diffuses the carefully built up tension. A surprisingly disappointing ending of an otherwise extraordinary theatrical experience. (MB)
