A natural gal at heart, day-to-day, Nikki is not a fan of wearing a lot of make up. Out and about, she prefers to avoid fake lashes; so forget contouring and colour-matching or any such lingo, as she doesn’t even own foundation. This posed a problem for the wedding day, as many women feel a certain pressure to get the full, flawless make up look, Nikki shares further, “I did feel I should be getting my make up done properly to be a bride, it almost felt mandatory. Anyone I told about not wanting to get my make up done was surprised, and insisted I would regret it. Looking back on my photographs and video, I am so glad I stuck to my instincts and did my own make up. Finding
something Special WIT H DR ESS SHOPPING NOT ALL IT WAS HYPED UP TO BE , NI KKI WAS SER IOUSLY IN NEED OF SOME ANGELs . LUC KILY, hel p wasn’t too fa r away “My Mum lives in London, so I decided to start my wedding dress hunt down there as I thought it might be a more exclusive, fun experience.” Unfortunately this proved not to be the case and Nikki was left disheartened by the whole day. In a scene reminiscent of eighties classic Pretty Woman, one particular bridal shop informed Nikki that they would have nothing that would suit her or her ‘style’. “To me, bigger bridal stores felt like a cattle market, and I was left feeling sad - particularly after watching shows like Say Yes to the Dress religiously.” So Nikki got proactive. Pinterest and online blogs soon became close friends, as she discovered designers that she liked, and brides-to-be with great design aesthetics; allowing her to grow a bank of ideas that would aid in her planning.

“Thankfully this influenced my next shopping experience, where I found my actual dresses. I liked Demetrios as a designer, which led me to Sophia Grace Couture. Once I explored their social media, I knew it was somewhere I wanted to shop for my dream dress. The first dress that shop owner Nadine tried on me, although not my choice, ended up being ‘the one!’ Nadine, Hannah and Paula were my ‘fairy godmothers’ and they truly made me feel like Cinderella. From picking the dress, to sharing it with loved ones, to fittings, to finally being the last customer to leave in 2019, I can’t thank the team enough . Happy and sad tears were shed, and throughout it all, we felt really at home in the store. It was like leaving friends which was bittersweet, but in hindsight a really exciting time.

Ivory in colour with a classically beautiful cut, Nikki’s day dress was an off the shoulder number, with a sweetheart neckline. A particularly favourite feature was the intricately beaded lace bodice that extended over the torso towards a full and volumnious A-line skirt and elaborately detailed train. With both dresses purchased from Sophia Grace Couture, Nikki’s evening gown was a figure-skimming yet graceful Paloma Blanco creation. Also ivory toned and off-the-shoulder in style, that’s where the similarities ended. Form-fitting, sleek and modern, it was perfect for dancing in, as it was much more lightweight than her first gown. Having had a major back surgery less than two months prior to the wedding day, comfort was ultimately now a significant
consideration for Nikki, as the weight of her first dress meant she was unable to dance in her Demetrios gown. Nikki was overwhelmed with support as the team at Sophia Grace Couture were incredibly thoughtful throughout this very stressful time. “They went over and above to find my second dress, and ensure both gowns were altered in time for my big day. I was struggling to heal, and travel to fittings, however their regular contact and assurance kept me cool, calm and collected,” Nikki reveals.

We also did a handfasting and quaich drinking ceremony to really include a bit of tradition into our nuptials.”

It also allowed my Paddy to share his memories of us and offer words of wisdom in preparation for our new married life. This was something very important to us both as a a couple.�

Hand fasting is an ancient Celtic marriage ritual and if you ever wondered where the expression ‘tying the knot’ came from, here’s why! In a respectful nod to tradition, Dean and Nikki were keen to include one. It is a symbolic way of showing that they are joined to one another for life, a strong knot, born through the will of Dean and Nikki to make it so. Using the MacEwan Tartan and the Tartan of Dean’s wedding kilt, their hands were parted and the cords knotted together and was a particularly enjoyable part of the ceremony. To reinforce their family bonds, Dean and Nikki planned a traditional Scottish welcoming of families by drinking from a shared quaich. Utilising the help of Dean’s gran Irene and Nikki’s gran Jenny, it was a close and personal way to unite the two families, with the promise of a shared, bright future.

With a Christmas wedding on the cards, the couple decided on colours that would complement the festive time of year. A shade of burgundy was initially chosen and as the planning and meetings with their suppliers progressed, the colour palette developed to include shades of gold, navy and ivory. Another priority was the cake. Having previously had the pleasure of tasting the delights of Mimi’s Bakehouse, it was an easy choice for the couple to select this

centrally located cake shop in the heart of Edinburgh to cater for their big day. “The cupcake towers on their website were appealing, which was helpful as both Dean and I aren’t hugely sweet-toothed. We liked the prospect of variety, and when we tasted the cakes we were blown away by their flavours.” Finally deciding on a variety of flavours, choosing Red Velvet, Chocolate Chip, Sticky Toffee Biscoff and Carrot Cake for the cupcakes, and a Victoria Sponge

for the cutting cake, the couple’s best bit was the tasting session. “We took our Grans with us to the cake tasting. This was so important to both of us as it was really special to be able to involve them in the planning for our special day. Another amazing element was our stay at The Rutland Hotel the nights following the wedding, which was around New Years. We enjoyed the famous Edinburgh Street Party and the fireworks at Edinburgh Castle as newlyweds”

Wedding planning came easily to Nikki. Incredibly, she didn’t find the process particularly stressful and this was mainly down to the incredible suppliers they hand picked. “My advice to future brides is not to go with someone if you are not 100% sure. Take your time and investigate your suppliers. If you pick these right, the planning process is so enjoyable, and stress-free.

“Our menu tasting with all six of our parents was a particularly enjoyable experience. We were able to taste all options available to us, including the drink. Let’s just say there were lots of sore heads the following day! We selected 2Flux as our stationers and their attention to detail was phenomenal. Guests praised everything from the invites to the favours of personalised crackers.

There’s no questioning why they were set on holding their nuptials in such a romantic and historic building as Mansfield Traquair, prestigiously dubbed Edinburgh’s ‘Sistine Chapel’. Selecting the Winter Wedding Experience in a nod to the festive season, entering through the famous ‘red doors’ their first visit was more than enough to convince them they’d found their ideal wedding location.

Speeches are always a great way for the couple’s nearest and dearest to express their love and affection for each other. Nikki shares more, “Hearing Dean speak from the heart about our friends and families was definitely emotional, as was listening to my Dad tell me how proud of us he is. The Best Men definitely had a few embarrassing moments, and I certainly couldn’t look at my family when reference was made to Dean’s ‘Firemans pole!”

Dean and Nikki first actually met as kids in secondary school. However with Dean being two years younger than Nikki, she reveals it unsurprisingly wasn’t love at first sight. “He was in the lighting team as a first year student, whilst I played the lead in South Pacific. “Dean says he always ‘shone his spotlight’ on me, however it wasn’t until the end of my probationary year of teaching that we met properly and really began to build our relationship.” In a surprising quirk of fate, Dean’s aunt was Nikki’s line-manager, so the stars began to align.

Nikki happened to post a picture of a great night out after a work event, which inspired Dean to ‘slide into her DMs’ with an “I didn’t know you worked with my Aunt Jen!” message, an icebreaker if there ever was one. With much encouragement from her younger sister Gillian – who had once been buddied by Dean – on the same evening of Dean’s initial message, the pair went on a date to the cinema to see Entourage. Returning afterwards to Dean’s house to continue the evening a bit longer, Nikki was startled when a sea of dogs appeared in the room – chased by Dean’s mum!

“After a night in Cancun where we discussed moving in together, Dean suggested he would have to save financially for something I didn’t need to. Clueless - I asked what? When Dean replied a ring, I asked when he wanted to get engaged. He replied ‘someday’, but I could swear he said ‘Monday!’ It then became a running joke that we would get engaged on a Monday, with Dean saying on most Sunday nights, Ohhhh it could be tomorrow!” True to form, Dean proposed the Christmas of 2017, which was infact a Monday! The surprise came as they unwrapped gifts in their flat on Christmas morning. “Amidst my presents was a scroll that I thought would be telling me about a trip we might go on. It was actually lyrics and quips about our lives together, and the final line read ‘you’ve been reading long enough now, let’s get round to what I want to say... isn’t it funny how this year Christmas falls on a Monday!’ And just like that, he was down on one knee, and the rest is history...”

First date ever and Nikki had already met Mum. “To this day I believe she sent the dogs in first to get a nosey at me!” A close bond was soon cemented after the couple went on an impressive three dates in three days, ranging from cinema trips and restaurants, to family events and thus, the love story began. When asked when she knew if it was love, Nikki says “On the second date Dean showed up to my sister’s 18th birthday gathering, and met a large proportion of my family. The champagne was flowing and so was the conversation, everything went so well, I knew in that moment he would be part of my life forever.” This foodie-loving couple enjoy going out together for dinner and drinks. Lovers of new experiences, their most frequently asked question to one another is: “What are we eating next?” Having spent time as a youngster living footloose and fancy free in New York, Nikki has a particularly fond affinity with the States. Choosing your tribe to escort you throughout the most private moments of your most special day is always a major decision. The first women for the job were automatically Gillian and Katrina, Nikki’s sisters. Closely followed by Leigh, Laura and Colette, all best friends recruited to be members of her squad. Her only complaint is that she couldn’t have had more! “Although I am fortunate to have so many friends and family in my life that it would have been incredible to stand with on the day, it was an easy decision to pick my girls. They organised the most incredible hen dos for me, and all sorts of pre-wedding fun. I will be forever grateful for their love and unequivocal support. Interestingly enough, my Mum always says my hen do in Marbella was my turning point, as it was the first time I really got a chance to reflect on the effort, love and attention everyone else was willing to put into the wedding. From then, I chilled out and began to get excited for the day.”
