Whilst it can strike indiscriminately, discovering that certain groups, such as Afro-Caribbean males are more susceptible, is all the more personal. However, there is hope, due to the great work charities such as Prostate Cancer UK are doing, it inspires us to continue to raise awareness and look after the men in our lives.

Elicia Jacobs is a woman on a mission, starkly capturing human emotions in art form and preserving them beautifully, meet the woman behind the canvas...

E

licia Jacobs is a figurative painter who over the last five years has developed her comprehensive art practice. Born in Hackney, in East London, Elicia studied art at college and continued her interest in painting by attending workshops and tutorials.

In recent years, she has created commissioned artwork for numerous clients – from private art collectors to executives in both public and private sectors, as well as being commissioned to create artwork for a fundraising event held at BAFTA and for inspiring occasions such as Sherry Ann Dixon’s

spectacular annual event Awesome You. She had her first group exhibition in April 2015, called ‘Under the Radar’ at the Oil and Water gallery in Wandsworth. Elicia’s oil painting of Larrington Walker entitled ‘In The Spot Light’ captures the director, actor and mentor’s essence and intense presence, taking approx. 24 hours to paint. However, Elicia’s love of figurative paintings, influenced by the likes of popular artist Roy Lichtenstein, and

her own mother, has helped her to focus on her own art. She likes to capture the encapsulate the effects of chiaroscuro through the pursuit of her art, and feels as if she is being taken on a journey of discovery evoking passions of drama through her in-depth interpretation of life. Elicia Jacobs showed her skills as an artist, when in March 29th of 2015.she unveiled her painting at an event celebrating International Women’s Day. Elicia presented her fabulous Sherry Ann Dixon masterpiece at the recent “Awesome You” event

Mechanic Errol Mckellar owns a garage in Hackney and was diagnosed at fifty three. Reading a chance leaflet at a doctor’s surgery saved his life...

I

n 2010 Errol was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 53. He had been prompted to go to the GP by his wife for help with his snoring. However, whilst he was in the waiting room he picked up a leaflet about prostate cancer and then discussed his risk with his GP.

Errol had a PSA test on the same day which revealed that he could be at risk.Further tests later confirmed that he had the disease. It wasn’t until after his diagnosis that he found out that his father had also had prostate problems but had never spoken about the due to embarrassment.

Errol initially found it incredibly difficult to come to terms with the fact that he had prostate cancer. He became extremely low and was very worried about the future. However, he became determined to overcome the disease he pledged to raise awareness amongst men of his age. In February 2011 he had an operation to remove his prostate and went on to endure three months of radiotherapy. The journey wasn’t easy and Errol

experienced some side effects as a result of the operation. He admits that this has been difficult to come to terms with. However, Errol has now been given the all clear. Since being diagnosed, Errol has continued to raise awareness of prostate cancer and encourages all men to go and speak to their GP about their risk. He even offers discounts to customers who promise to visit their GP about their prostate cancer risk. If you would like more information, visit

prostatecancer.org As a result of Errol’s efforts over the last three years, 26 men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and have been referred for treatment. Sadly two have since passed away.

HAT IS THE PROSTATE?

Only men have a prostate gland. The prostate is usually the size and shape of a walnut and grows bigger as you get older. It sits underneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra – the tube men urinate and ejaculate through.

HAT IS PROSTATE CANCER?

Prostate cancer can develop when cells in the prostate start to grow in an uncontrolled way. Prostate cancer often grows slowly to start with and may never cause any problems. But some men have prostate cancer that is more likely to spread. This needs treatment to stop it spreading outside the prostate..

& SYMPTOMS

Prostate cancer that’s contained inside the prostate doesn’t usually cause any symptoms. However some men may have some urinary problems. These may be mild and happen over many years. For some men the first symptoms of prostate cancer might be new pain in the back, hips or pelvis. This can be caused by cancer that’s spread to the bones. These symptoms are often caused by other problems such as general aches or arthritis. However it’s still a good Content idea to get them checked out by your GP as most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any symptoms. - All information courtesy of prostatecanceruk.org

“My father’s death was caused by prostate cancer 15 years ago. When he was finally diagnosed he did nothing about it and kept it from the family...until it was too late. I can’t tell you how angry I was with him after his death for doing too little too late, earlier detection followed by treatment would have surely prolonged his life. Young men please... don’t stand by; get checked by your GP on a regular basis because your lives really do matter. Get peace of mind, give your loved ones peace of mind and get checked out today before it’s too late.” -Karen Salandy, Make Up Artist

“Harlem Carter is proud to support our men and such a worthy cause, with no greater gift than the Blue Crystal Heart from our limited edition collection,,to show your love for your man and support many others whilst raising much-needed funding for this amazing cause.” -Josephine, Harlem Carter

WE All CARE

“The charity’s movement, Men United is for everyone who really wants to make prostate cancer something no man needs to fear in the future. Through The Alpha Health Awareness Evening, KML Events UK are joining the fight against this disease. We thank them for helping us push for real change by raising awareness and much needed funds. We hope the evening is a success.” -James Beeby, Director of Fundraising, Prostate Cancer UK

“Associating a female fashion brand like Eki Orleans with Prostrate Cancer makes complete sense. Every single one of our clients has a man in their lives in one way or another, be it a father figure, a husband, a son etc. It is our duty to look after the male figures in our lives and to encourage them to get tested for prostrate cancer, just like we get tested for breast cancer. All it takes is creating awareness, support and love to show that we care and what better way to get that message across than to have beautiful models walk down the catwalk in bright silky garments with a hot football player by their side. “ -Hazel Eki Aggrey-Orleans, Eki Orleans

“As a mother of three boys it’s important that I make them aware of undertaking check-ups when they become men. So come on all Husbands, Fathers, Brothers and Friends - do book a two minute check-up. It can save your life.” -Oriele Frank, Chief Marketing Officer, ELEMIS

“We know that black men are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer than men of other ethnicities, in fact they have a 1 in 4 chance. So there is an urgency to reach out to these men and make them aware of their risks.” -Tony Wong, African and African Caribbean Project Manager, Prostate Cancer UK
