ontrol and Automation Engineering is becoming widespread. Nowadays, the innovations are built on controlling logic. The following reportage was made with Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Eksin, Head of the Control and Automation department and he said "Development cannot be stopped; thus, the lesson of technology feedback depending on controlling systems should be a subject at high schools.". He graduated from Boğaziçi University Electric and Electronic Engineering; besides, he made his master’s and doctorate on control at the same university. After Prof. Eksin graduated, he started to work at company building automation systems for 1 and a half years. He said, "being an academician was totally a destiny. It was not my dream; however, if I had one more chance for leading my destiny, I would go the same way. I'm very happy to be here." Prof. Dr. Eksin made a name not only in the field of engineering but also in the fields of national-level athleticism, dancing and Turkish Classical Music which he used to found a club at Istanbul Technical University. Also he has appeared in concerts by this club, He said that he felt happy when he was engaged with music and found himself in music as well. He mentioned that there are three main components of life. it. The rest of life is self-expression. It could be whatever you like to engage with.” Could you please inform us about the foundation of the department and what graduates do? Computer and Control Engineering was founded 2 years before I came to this university. The revolutionary and enterprising Gülsüm Sağlamer was the rector. Due to his son’s department, she understood the importance of computer engineering; hence, she wanted to change computer and automation engineering to computer engineering. It was required; however, there were 24 lecturers at the department and 15 out of 24 were specialized in control. We asked what would happen to us. We litigated and won a lawsuit against the directors. The control department was opened under electric engineering by court decision one year later; nevertheless, control should not have been under it. When I was the head of the control department, it deserved to be an independent department and became control and automation engineering. The control and automation engineers do system work accurately under the direction of requests. They determine required actions, setup and how setup has to be done. Actually, the human body is a control system which works with feedback, but nobody is aware of this. It is easy to make a command work on a human body; nonetheless, if it is a robot, it is not easy to enforce instruction on a robot, even if a command is just picked 3

and placed. A great deal of programming and math are required to carry the instruction out. Every issue needs controlling and nothing works without it, and basically, it starts from the human body. Which sector could graduates work in? Could they work abroad? Graduates have an ability to make the design of a system, carry it out accurately and route it without failure. They observe and model a system and do whatever the system requires. Graduates could deal with quite a few systems such as satellites, smart building, the process of a textile machine shop, the setting process of paper thickness, the autopilot of a plane, and the parking systems without drivers and so on. All these terms require a controlling mentality. Of course, they could work abroad. Previous students of this department are working for companies such as Siemens and BMW abroad; in addition, there are students who are completing their doctorate at such universities as MIT and UPENN. A well-educated person is accepted everywhere. There is confusion between Mechanical Engineering and Control and Automation Engineering. Could mechanical engineers do what control and automation engineers do? This confusion could occur because of some common areas between us, but it is not true. If it was right, aircraft, electric even chemistry engineers would do controllers’ job for every department beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

because they all require control. For instance, chemists have to control the amount of substances. Nobody can say mechanical engineers might do an electricians’ occupation even if they take an electric lecture. The control department was founded since it concentrates on microprocessors, controllers, plc, electronic control units and all electronic devices; besides, it prepares students to program with these devices. The control department is based on electric and electronic, computer, mechanics, microprocessor, and plc technology; in addition, we have to be acquainted with knowledge of sensor, moment and motor. And our primary concern is how these terms are combined and work together accurately. Nobody can do what controllers do unless they know these basics. Our closest department is mechatronics; however, it focuses on how instruments could be unified, whereas our department concentrates on how control can be executed in addition to assembly. As you know this department has been opened at just three universities. Is there any disadvantage of it? On the contrary, I say it proudly; we have no unemployed graduates who are looking for a job related to their department. Could you please let us know in what order ITU has been ranked between these three universities? It can't be a question. There is a rating system among universities according to foundation years, the number of lecturers and students, etc. If the other two

universities face this query, you get the answer as we are the second and third one. We wereestablishedin1982and there is no way to outrival us. Facts can't be changed easily. Do control and automation engineers have authority to sign? Authority of signing is discussed all the time, but I don't think it is as important as people suppose. Electric engineers have it because they are dealing with high voltage. On the other hand, neither electronic engineers nor mechanical engineers have authority of signing. We don't need an authority of signing in our job. Honestly, I can say that if you want to have it, you can study electric engineering not control and automation engineering. Does the department have a developed laboratory? Early on, the institution had only a few instruments; nonetheless, nowadays, we are assertive and feel lucky about our laboratory. Four out of the five biggest automation companies sponsored it and it is possible to see these companies when the laboratory is visited. I would like to mention the firms which sponsored us: Siemens, ABB, Mitsubishi and Rockwell Automation.

graduates. I think they should not accept the job for less money. Do you recommend anything to students who want to become an academician? Being an academician is a rewarding job, and it is a lifestyle. Whoever wants to be an academician has to have a sense of inquiry like researching; moreover, they must look at issues from a different point of view and suffer pain as well. You shouldn’t start this job by saying I will be an academician; however, the path routes you to be an academician without your prediction. Otherwise, it becomes boring and painful. I saw many students who became unhappy because of the obsession of becoming an academician. People should do what makes them happy and what they are able to do best. I want to repeat it again "you must love your partner and your job as well".

Handan Çevik

How much money do control and automation engineers who improve themselves earn? The wage decreased according to lowproduction in Turkey; even so it is around the minimum 2500-3500 TL for new

Hagia Sophia

H

agia Sophia comes from the Greek Hagia Sophia. Hagia means Holy and Sophia means wisdom, so the meaning of Hagia Sophia is Holy Wisdom.

While you are crossing the Galata Bridge, if you look at your left, you will see Hagia Sophia. If you listen carefully, you can hear the voice of Hagia Sophia. “I’m here”, it has said for about 1500 years as a mighty, graceful, witness of time. Today, we will talk about Hagia Sofia; one of the most prominent symbols of Istanbul. First, we will start with Hagia Sophia’s history: beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

Hagia Sophia was built by the Byzantine King Justinian 1st in A.D 532.The architects were İsiddos and Trallesh. From the day it was constructed to 1453, Hagia Sophia was used as an Orthodox Church. After Istanbul was conquered by Mehmet the 2ndin 1453, it was converted into a mosque, but now it is a museum. Ottomans did not damage the Angels Pictures and mosaics, but covered them with special plaster.

Hagia Sophia was an excellent building and had remained undamaged since 532. However, it had major structural problems until Mimar Sinan made some strengthening precautions. Hagia Sophia has one of the largest domes in the world, which is 50 meters across. Unfortunately, the pillars could not carry the domes because of the building’s structural mistakes. The church was repaired many times and the cost of repair work was very 6

high. Mimar Sinan found the mistakes and built additional pillars. Shall we have a brief trip around Hagia Sophia! You can see Hagia Sophia from every point in Sultan Ahmet Square. First, you have to buy a ticket in order to visit it. One ticket costs 30 TL. I think you should get a museum card which allows you to enter a lot of museums in Turkey free of charge.

When you enter the main door, Jesus and the Apostles welcome you. As soon as you enter Hagia Sophia, you will see both a mosque and a church. This is fascinating. If you look up, you can see the dome. It is special because you are looking at one of the largest domes in the World. Also, if Sinan had not dared to build a dome like this, it could have fallen apart. Let’s continue. Under the dome, you can see four angels. They are very intriguing.

In addition to Christian symbols, Hagia Sophia has a lot of Islamic symbols such as Mimbar, Mihrab and Arabic Koran verses.

If you go to the second floor, you will see the whole building and feel Hagia Sophia’s atmosphere. Veysel Abdullah Tekin Photos were taken by Veysel Abdullah Tekin Reference: Hagia Sophia Leaflet

Berlin Wall

N

in early 1961. First, the barbed-wire was constructed, but it was not enough.

othing had separated people from each other like this, nothing had ignored people’s freedom and no wall had killed 238 people who missed their relatives and friends until August 13th, 1961.

Even if it isn’t enough to express it, the Berlin wall was called the ‘Shame Wall’. The construction of the wall continued overnight. Length of the wall was 46 kilometers.

During the Second World War, a great majority of people who had escaped from the war’s economical and social problems ran from eastern Germany to western Germany. According to records, between 1950 and 1955, 270,000 people escaped only by using an underground passage. The effort of blocking the escapes started

beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

According to the Parliament of East Germany’s very secret decision, it was built on August 13th, 1961. It was such a secret that Walter Ulbricht, Floor Managerof the Socialist Unity Party, who decided to build The Shame Wall answered Annamarie Doherr, a German correspondent, by saying, “Niemand hat die Absicht, eineMauerzuerrichten” in English: ‘No one has the intention of erecting a wall‘. The first state of the wall was not enough, just like barbed-wire, to stop people from moving to the West. Thus, the precautions were increased such as mines, observers with dogs, and watchtowers. Finally, the real shame wall was built. The eastern front was painted white to make people who try to escape appear clearly. The western front was painted with graffiti.

8

There were chain fences and minefields along the wall in East Germany. There were 186 observation towers and hundreds of lamps for security. Pedestrian and motorcar police provided security with dogs. Along the wall, there were 25 roads, water ways and railroads. Although security was high, about 5,000 people escaped beyond the wall and the police precautions. There were various escape ways such as using 150 meter tunnels, hiding in suitcases and so on. In my opinion, the most creative way of escape is that the famous band who passed the wall’s security in their loudspeakers.

Actually, there is only one escape captured a photographer, by Peter Leibing, and this photographer won the Overseas Press Club’s Best Photo Prize with this photo which has symbolized the cold war ever since. It was only three days after deciding to build the wall. A man called Hans Conrad Schumann, who was 19, was watching the construction of the wall at the corner of Ruppiner and Bernauer Streets. At that time, the Berlin Wall was only a barbed-wire fence. After people who were on thewest side shouted athim ‘’kommrüber!,’’ in English ‘come here’’, he jumped over the barbed-wire

beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

and he was removed by a police car at high speed. In those times, the East German Government showed this wall as a shield which protected them and tried to legitimize its construction. In fact, the wall and other borders of East Germany blocked people from leaving the country. In early 1989, the German Democratic Republic allowed people to go who wanted to go to countries in the Soviet Union eastern block. Then a large number of people raided different countries such as Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia and they took refuge in the Embassies of America, England and France. These people escaped to the other countries which were not in the eastern block. The East German Government wanted to solve the issue and they came together to make a choice. People could escape to where they wanted, so the wall was not necessary anymore. The East German Government decided to destroy the Shame Wall. They announced this decision on November 9th, 1989. In honor of the memory of destroying the wall, Google changed its own logo on November 9th, 2014.

9

When the decision for destruction was announced, a large number of people collected on both sides of the wall. First of all, the government started with Brandenburg Gate and unblocked it and the other barriers. Thousands of people met with their family and friends. The official destruction of the wall is June 13th, 1990; however, did the wall’s negative effects end when it was destroyed? I think It is an arguable subject. For example, a great majority of cities with the highest unemployment rates are in the east side nowadays.

political problems so many films were made about the wall:     

Guy Fawkes Day

G

uy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, is celebrated on the 5th of November to commemorate The Gunpowder Plot, but who is Guy Fawkes and what is The Gunpowder Plot?

In 1605, thirteen people tried to assassinate James I, the king of England, and blow up the Houses of Parliament. Some parliament members were trying to make Catholics' lives harder than it already was and for this reason, those thirteen people decided that violence was necessary. They bought 36 barrels of gunpowder and put it under the building. As they were planning the details of the assassination, some of them started to think about the consequences because innocent people and some of their friends who helped them could be killed in the attack. One of them sent a letter to his friend in parliament saying that he needed to stay away from the building on the night of the 5thof November. The King saw this letter, too. As the people started to leave the building, authorities found the gunpowder barrels with a man named Guy Fawkes. He was one of the thirteen people who had planned the attack. He was tortured to reveal his friends' names and then executed.

After this event became known to the public, people wanted to celebrate their king's safety and started to light up fireworks. They set bonfires and, for this reason, November the 5th is known as Bonfire Night. At first, only bonfires and fireworks were used during these celebrations, but after some time, people started to make puppets of Guy Fawkes named "the Guy" and set them on fire. Today, some children walk around the streets carrying their puppets and saying: "A penny for the Guy?" Later, they use this money to buy fireworks.

Like everything, this celebration has two sides. On one side, there are people who beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

celebrate the 5th of November for the safety of their king. On the other side, there are people who celebrate this night to honor Guy Fawkes' attempt. There is a movie named V for Vendetta which reflects the second point of view. Most people have heard of the 5th of November from it. In this movie, there is a man named V and he starts to inform people about the dark-side of the government. He uses the phrase "Remember, remember the 5th of November!" and asks people to join him on the night of the next 5thin front of the Houses of Parliament. At the end of the movie, people become ready to change and they wear the same mask as V wears all the time.

“Good” To “Great”

J

im Collins is a 56-year-old American business consultant who was born on the 25th of January in 1958. He is an author who wrote books on the subject of company sustainability and growth and a lecturer. He studied Mathematics at Stanford University and worked as a consultant with McKinsey & Company for 18 months. Then he worked as a product manager for the Hewlett-Packard firm. He started his research and teaching career among the faculty at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business in 1992. He established a management laboratory in Boulder, Colorado where he still carries out his research and teaches executives from the corporate and social sectors.

In this article, we will talk about the Hedgehog Concept in the book “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

Leap...and Others Don't” of his five books which have been on the Business Week best-seller list for more than six years.

Isaiah Berlin classifies people into two groups named foxes and hedgehogs in The Hedgehog and The Fox article which is based on the Greek issues: “The fox has lots of ways, but the hedgehog has one big way.” The Fox is an animal which attacks Hedgehogs as they organize complex strategies. It is fast and skilful. However, the Hedgehog tries to find food and protect its home in a lethargic manner. The Fox waits silently at the place where the trails intersect, and when the Hedgehog comes there, it attacks thinking, “Okay, here now I will catch you!”The Hedgehog which recognizes the danger closes itself up and becomes like a small ball which has arrows around it. The Fox sees this and gives up its attack. While it keeps going through the forest, it has already started to think of the plans for the next attack. However, the Hedgehog always wins the game although the Fox is very clever.

13

Berlin infers two meanings which classify people into two groups from this situation: fox and Hedgehog. Foxes seek lots of things at the same time and perceive the world in all its complexity. According to him, the fox is “scattered and takes action at multiple levels at the same time” because the fox can’t combine its perceptions to develop one integrated vision. However, the hedgehog handles the complex world around one organizing principle and a concept which combines everything and gives direction to everything: the hedgehog converts all threats and dilemmas to simple ideas (hedgehog strategy), no matter how complicated the world is. Marvin Bressler, one of the academics at the University of Princeton, mentioned that the thing which separates the most influential people from other people who are as clever as them is hedgehogs; Einstein with his Theory of Relativity, Marx with his idea of Class Consciousness are both hedgehogs and they popularized the complex world. The hedgehog is not a stupid animal. On the contrary, it has grasped that a deep perception can be possible only thanks to simplicity. What can be as simple as E=mc²; the subconscious which is classified as id, ego, superego? The Hedgehog Model, in a clear expression, is a simple and clear concept because the confluence of three circles is grasped deeply:

1. What is the domain in which you are the best? (And the domain in which you can’t be the best is also at least as important as this) Having a domain in which you are capable doesn’t mean that you are the best in the world. Moreover, just the opposite, the domain in which you are the best might be a domain in which you have never been interested in. 2. What is the thing that turns your motors? If we handle firms as an example, all firms that changed from good to great have foresight about how a lasting and strong cash flow is provided effectively. The profit per x that is the only criterion which they have found especially is a criterion that has a big effect on their finances. 3. What is the thing that you love passionately? The main idea here is not visualizing passions in an artificial way; it is exploring the thing that fills you with passion.

One of the most remarkable points of the Hedgehog Model is not the target of being the best, a strategy of being the best, a beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

plan of being the best, and an intent of being the best. It is grasping the thing that you can be the best at.

geeks & nerds:

T

his month in geeks & nerds we have a girl who is a streamer and cosplayer at the same time.

recently streaming is more dominant in my life. I gave up going to university due to my department. I was a student in the Faculty of Law at Yeditepe University. But now, I am re-preparing for a new university. I was starting to play so early. However, I had to take a break from playing for my education. As I said, first of all, I am a streamer now. As you knew, I am Deniz “Dozkan” Özkan.

How did your game life start? Are you first a streamer or cosplayer?

Firstly, I want to talk about streaming and cosplaying. A streamer is a kind of player, but this is like an entertaining show. They show us how they play. A cosplayer is not about just video games. Cosplay is an art in which a player makes a costume which is used in games, animes, movies, animations and so on. Now I am going to show you a cosplayer and streamer who lives in Turkey. Her user name is Dozkan. You can learn a lot of things about her at (dozkan.tv). However, I am sharing a short interview about Dozkan. Have fun.

Actually none of them. First of all, I am a player who was playing WoW (World of Warcraft) with a 2.2- 2.4 rating on the Turkey Server. After that, I wanted to play a new game and began searching. I came across LoL (League of Legends) at that time. When I had played LoL for one or two months, I was making a team and playing with them. After I developed my playing skills, I found “twitch.tv”. I watched some streamers at this site and I asked myself why I don’t show my playing. I had fun with my friends. Our conversations are very cool. Then I started streaming. However, my first cosplay was made 2 years later by myself.

Who is “Dozkan”? Dozkan is a person that is streaming and re-preparing for college. However, beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

What does your family think about your game life?

First, my family opposed my game life. Especially, when I was studying at university; we always argued about my game life. But the more arguments there were with my family, the more time for playing I had. However, in the past my mother was playing Wow and my father was playing on the game console PlayStation. Therefore, I started to play due to my family. This is my main reason for playing a game. Hence, they have not been opposed recently.

What are the advantages disadvantages of being a streamer?

and

Advantages? There are many disadvantages for the few advantages. However, it makes me happy as I have fun beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

when I make a stream or play a game and I can share my happiness with people. I met a lot of people due to this activity. Now we are so close and I love them. On the other hand, people who know nothing about streaming and online games always think that I am an antisocial person. However, I have a lot of friends on the Internet and they don’t know this fact. This was the same status for my family at first, but they could understand what I said. Furthermore, you must have a long time since this isn’t just streaming. You have to prepare before the stream and you have to make a connection with your viewer. To be honest, my biggest difficulty is answering my viewer’s questions. I answer the questions the whole day with my phone. Unless I plan my life, I have difficulties.

How did you decide to be a Cosplayer? What type of challenges did you face in your first cosplay?

After the streaming, I met some people who are in the game sector. They were searching for a cosplayer for the DOTA 2 tournament. After that, I thought I had a lot of leisure time and my budget was enough for a cosplay. Therefore, I decided to make a cosplay costume. My cosplay was Crystal Maiden in DOTA 2. First, I thought that it would be so easy. However, I started to make a costume and I realized it was not easy. I made a cosplay costume and cried at the same time for 2 weeks. I could not set a correct
