A Closer Look at One Department

F

or this issue, we want to introduce you to Management Engineering, so we interviewed Prof. Dr. Lerzan Özkale. Let us mention who she is. She is graduated from Notre de Sion High School and is one of the very first students of Management Engineering at ITU. Also she had her master’s degree in the same program, and she became the vice principal of her department. She had responsibilities which included coordinator of Erasmus and deputy dean. Nowadays, she is a lecturer who shares very deep ideas with us.

Firstly, how would you describe management engineering? Everyone wonders what the differences are between management engineering and management, why management engineering? There is some overlap in terms of the timetable of management engineering and management; however, to call one program an Engineering program and to meet national and international accreditation, it has to contain at least 1 year of fundamental science and at least 1.5 years of engineering lessons. This is the same for not only mechanical engineering but also management beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

engineering and industrial engineering. Therefore, to compare with management is not valid because of the fact that it is a program with such a structure. 1 year and 1 and half years take 2 and half years. There are management and economy courses in the rest of 1 and a half years. There are other lessons such as social sciences, art, and sport which exist to equip young people with the necessary qualifications for the world. Thus, it has a structure unlike management. This means management engineering is different from management. There are some points that are similar to Management Engineering in Management, but basically there are not any lessons about engineering in Management. Well, what do management engineers do? Management engineers take part in the administration of engineers’ activities. To give an example, today, huge problems occur in mining engineering which is significant for Turkey. To sustain this job efficiently, actively, and without accident, is the job of management engineering. However, they do business which any other manager cannot do because of the fact that they have known production. This is the difference.

People are always confused about what Industrial Engineering and Management Engineering are. It is always said that they are the same thing. Could you explain the differences between them?

3

If we look closer at the definition of industrial engineering, we are going to see that they are more interested in optimization staff. It means optimization of usage of materials, optimization of usage of effort, in short optimization of everything about production. Today it is normal that you are puzzled. It grows from these people who graduated from Industrial and Management Engineering working in similar positions in professional life. There is nothing which one does, and the other cannot do, so why do we have two different types of specializations? If we want to learn this, we have to search for the origin of these departments. Over time industrial engineering was established and named industry engineering, which was one option of mechanical engineering. That is why it was more like today’s mechanical engineering, but it had been differentiated by adding some lectures like optimization, management of manufacturing, and operating research. However, in time, industry engineering evolved to industrial engineering. Nonetheless, if we look at management engineering, it was the same programs today’s industrial engineering initially; it evolved to educate students about managing engineering activities. However, we are not really sure if we look from the side of the graduated student because we may find numerous people who work in banking, but graduated from civil engineering. It means we have to be more interested in what our aim is and which improvement we provided for you, it is the main thing I guess.

beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

There are both Industrial Engineering Students and Management Engineering Students in the faculty of Management. Thus, how could students differentiate each other apart from the success in the university exam? Basically, there was a separation before. At the time when Industrial Engineering was called Industry Engineering, their lessons were based on very hard mechanical engineering lessons, so it was different from Management Engineering. However, today it depends on the choices of students in the USA. Different lessons between management engineering and industrial engineering are design work and ergonomics, respectively. It means that differentiation comes from your choices. However, we do not have to separate the two departments.

What are the job opportunities for people who graduate from Management Engineering? This point is the easiest one for our university. Of course, if graduates do their best here in 4 years. This requires 3 things: 

 

They have to improve their English that they learnt in preparation school over those 4 years unceasingly. They have to spend their time on learning another foreign language. Doing the assignments that we give students here not only with an aim of getting high grades but also with an idea of how they can be a successful person in the future, 4

how they can do different things from others. They have a great number of opportunities here to do their best. In senior classes, we had a problem with students who could not make a presentation in English. For example, we changed the method of team-work lessons and improved a method which enables every student in the team to work in every area in 4 years.

We already know you graduated from one of the French High Schools and you can speak French like a native speaker, so which languages should a management engineer student know? Firstly, they have to enhance their knowledge of Turkish because the person who cannot speak his/her own language cannot speak another language. They have to separate writing and speaking that language because they are going to write a report about something in the future and they need to have fluent Turkish for this. I cannot say anything about which languages a management engineering candidate should speak. They have to choose whatever they want to learn associated with what kind of life they want in the future or which country they want to live in, or which country they will have business in. Learning a second and third language is very important.

What do you think about ERASMUS? As we know you worked for many years as beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

an ERASMUS Coordinator. Which countries should Management Engineering students go to? I think that students shouldn’t choose the country; they should choose the university because some countries such as France and Holland give their lessons only in their own language. Holland has to teach in Dutch because of the laws. It does not make any sense to me wasting time learning Dutch. However, Germany has increased the number of lessons in English recently. Nevertheless, you may find the lessons in English in every northern country. Spanish is also an important language. Also, Poland and Hungary have significant universities, so students should not panic about quota, and they need to learn about ERASMUS experiences in these countries.

What are your opinions about Management Engineering in the world? Management Engineering is more common in European countries than the USA. Nowadays, the USA has approximately 10 Management Engineering programs which are accredited by ABET, but Industrial Engineering seems to be more than this number because of being older than Management Engineering. However, there is not any school which contains Industrial Engineering and Management Engineering together. We are the pioneers. Management Engineering is mostly common in America as a master’s degree. It is called Engineering Management.

5

Many questions are asked to us about our name. If we search the accreditation criteria of ABET, we will see that there is a rule like this ‘engineering management and similarly named’. It means that some universities could name their departments whatever they want. Because of this, they let universities like us name our own programs.

What do you think about the events of the Management Engineering Club? They have achieved a lot before, but there was a little bit of a silence from them in the last 2 to 3 years. I really believe that they will do their best again.

Special thanks to Prof. Dr. Lerzan ÖZKALE

Grand Bazaar

T

he Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and the oldest markets in the world with its 61 streets, 18 gates, 4,400 shops, 2,195 ateliers, 18 fountains, 2 bedestens, 40 inns, 2,200 inn rooms, 12 prayer rooms, 12 warehouses, 1 school, 1 hamam, and 25,000 employees. It was built on 30,700 square meters and it draws around 250,000 to 500,000 visitors daily, depending on the season.

There are two bedestens, which are the main parts of the Grand Bazaar. According to rumors the inner bedesten, whose dimensions are 36 meters by 48 meters, has remained from the Byzantine era. The beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

Comnenien eagle, which is enclosed at the top of the east gate, shows that the bedesten is a Byzantine structure. The New Bedesten construction, which is recognized as a Sandal Bedesten, began in 1461 under Fatih Sultan Mehmet. The name of 'Sandal Bedesten' comes from a fabric whose name is the same as bedesten.

The year 1461, when Fatih Sultan Mehmet started to build, is accepted as the foundation of the bazaar; however, the essential big market was constructed out of wood by Kanuni Sultan Sßleyman. In addition to wealthy people's precious possessions, a large amount of the public budget was preserved in cash cases in the Grand Bazaar. Evliya Çelebi described the Grand Bazaar as a great strong castle.

7

Recurrent calamities, including fires and earthquakes, hit the Grand Bazaar more than 20 times beginning with the first fire in 1651 and ending with the last fire in 1954. It was demolished several times because of the destruction of these calamities. After the earthquake in 1984, the Grand Bazaar took on today's appearance.

The Grand Bazaar has its own magnificent history; for this reason, it should be added to the list of places which ought to be seen and it is the 11th most visited place according to the world list with its 15,000,000 annual visitors in 2014. It is easy to reach the Grand Bazaar by tram. The vehicle has a station near the bazaar in Beyaz覺t; thus, people do not have to walk a long way to arrive there.

People will be surprised by its glamorous structure and shops. The Bazaar is a heaven for compulsive shoppers. There is a wide range of products from spice to carpets.

In the bazaar people need to use a map to avoid coming to the same street repetitively; however, this problem is solved by the application of the Grand Bazaar map.

beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

8

In addition to shopping, everyone will want to take photographs to remember the day they went to the bazaar.

beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

9

Merchants say that everything is sold in the bazaar and almost every trader can speak English fluently. When I asked one of them how many languages he knew, he said that he could speak 8 languages to sell his products.

I urge people to go to the Grand Bazaar, and if they want to see every street of the bazaar, it is better to download the Grand Bazaar application to their smart devices in order to check the map.

People will be fascinated by the lantern shop beauty. Every street has shops related to their names, so it can be said that commodities are categorized by their type.

Tokat: the Cultural City in Anatolia which is the Center of Civilizations

T

okat is one of Turkey’s cities in the Green River basin which has sheltered 14 states and many principalities throughout its 500 years of rooted history beginning from the 3000s B.C. in Anatolia. The city, whose acreage is 9,958 km² and population in 2014 was595, 714 according to estimates, mirrors the culture of Anatolia by keeping its antiquities from regional dishes to weaving and from folk dances to clothing style.

lived in Anatolian lands include Tapigga Palace in Zile Maşat Höyük, the ionic abacus whose figure is the eagle and belonged to the Hellenistic era, Zile Clock Tower,

Zile Beyazit Bestami Mosque,

The name of Tokat, as we know, comes from “slap”. There was a castle named “Comano Pontica” in Tokat. When Seljuk Turks who conquered Anatolia took the castle, it was accepted that they hit a heavy slap to the Byzantine army. Therefore, the slap which was given to Byzantium became the name of the city and the city was given the name of “Tokat”. The counties of Tokat are as follows: Almus, Artova, Basciftlik, Erbaa, Niksar, Pazar, Resadiye, Sulusaray, Turhal, Yesilyurt and Zile. The Structure of Its Culture The artifacts of the Hittite, Phrygian, Kelkit, Seljuk dynasty, Ilkhanate and Ottoman cultures which remain from civilizations founded down the Kelkit, Green, and Cekerek Rivers exhibit the historical and cultural sides of Tokat. The lasting artifacts of these civilizations who beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

the Shrine that remained from the Eretnids, the Seljuk Bridge on the Green River, Pervane Hamam, Niksar Coregibuyuk Mosque that belonged to the Ilkhanate, and the Mahperi Hatun Caravansary in Pazar (Image 3) are the best samples in terms of the culture of Tokat.

people who come from their own villages wrestle on an open space. At that time, the bride goes to the hamam with her friends and relatives. On the third day, the bride is taken to the home of the groom on a horse with drums and flutes. Folk Dances Antiquities There are antiquities which were made in the past or traditions which are still continuing locally in Tokat. For example; 

The “Gozdegdi” expression is also used for the evil eye. In order to be protected from the evil eye incense or lead casting (to melt lead and pour it into cold water over the head of a sick person in order to break an evil spell)are used. Honey and peppermint are put on the wrists of sick people when they have a fever or want to vomit because of their illnesses. As a result, it is believed that vomiting will stop and the fever will decrease in this way. People in Zile still continue to do this. The ash of tobacco or cobwebs is put on wounds to stop bleeding. A wedding ceremony lasts three days and nights in villages. On the first day, wheat is pounded and then keskek meal is cooked and eaten. On that evening, there is a henna ceremony. On the second day, jewellery is given to the couple, and peasantry and other

Visitors also come across folk dances which play an important role here because communities carry their past to the present like that:  Semah Game: It is played with girls and boys. The girls turn around in a circle following the rhythm of drums and flutes, and the boys dance among the girls shaking their arms to the left and right. This is a common dance all around the city which continues turning.

 Ellik Game: It is a game which is danced with the music made with drums and flutes in the villages of the counties named Almus and Resadiye.  Lady girls: People in groups which include only girls and only boys sing folk songs to one another with drums and flutes.

12

 Deer Game: After a player who wears a deer costume of horns on his head and two circular mirrors on his eyes dances, he lies down on the ground like a dead person. Later, he is revived by magic and starts to dance again. “Deer and death” and the merger of the mirror, which symbolizes the sun, and the deer are symbolic combinations which come from the Hittites.  Grasshopper Game: Both girls and boys dance, imitating the jumps of the grasshopper and use drums and flutes. This is a common dance in Tokat.

The Clothing Style of Women The clothing, which is named “bindalli”, and sewn silver strings on velvet, also whose upper parts from the waist are tight and lower parts are large, are often seen, especially in rural areas. The silver belt worn on the waist is an accessory of this piece of clothing. The ‘shalwar’ is clothing for work which is worn daily, not for special days. The scarf that people wear is named the “yazma”. The Clothing Style of Men The most remarkable clothing in regional men’s clothes is the bolero which means “cepken” in Turkish. The bolero, which was worn as daily clothing in the past, but is worn for weddings and special days more recently, is clothing whose front part is switchless, around is braid and middle part is ornate with silk which has tambour. beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

It is as long as a vest and men wear a shirt under it. Flavors of Tokat The biggest feature of the houses of Tokat is that one of the big rooms is a kitchen. The public living there call it as “isevi” or “aksana”. Besides bakery foods particular to Middle Anatolia, fruits and vegetables have an important role in the regional cuisine. For example, the vine leaf is used in common and different ways. Stuffed leaves, bat with walnuts and bean stuffed are some of these meals which are made with vine leaves. Kazova grapes, Zile boiled grape juice and sugar sausage with walnuts are also other flavors that define the region of Tokat.

Moreover, a wide variety of other plants are used in the cuisine of Tokat. For example, plants such as evelik, which has a sour taste and looks like beet, and madimak and nivik which are generally used for rice, soups and braised meats. Bulghur, keskek, tarhana, kuskus and dried fruits and vegetables are also the basics in the traditional cuisine of Tokat.

13

What are the Known Things in Tokat? Tokat, which has a rather large cultural and historical structure opening its arms to many civilizations, is famous for production of tobacco, Niksay Ayvaz Water, Almus Dam,

Besides other meals such as Tokat kebab, stuffed meat, gendume soup and legged soup,

Ballica Cave, Topcam plateau,

Mahlep wine, which is only produced in Tokat, is in the rich cuisine of Tokat.

Directed by: Christopher Nolan Produced by: Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan, and Lynda Obst Written by: Jonathan & Christopher Nolan Music by: Hans Zimmer Language: English Budget: $ 165 million Box office: $ 50 million (November 9,2014) Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Ellen Burstyn, and Bill Irwin Genre: Science fiction Country: USA

In advance, I want to warn you. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should skip this page and watch the film at the earliest possibility because you will keep losing so many things until you watch it.

Cooper was a NASA engineer who was advanced in technical information and skills. After an air crash, he resigned and started to make a living by working in his cornfield as a farmer. He has one goal; providing a good and safe life for his children. The grandfather Donald looks after his children. His 10-year-old girl, Murph, takes after her father with her unbelievable intelligence; however, the other child is a mediocre student.

The girl faces with an extraordinary situation which she calls a ghost. Suddenly, books fall down from the bookshelf. The situation will change her life, but she does not know it then. She assumes that the situation is connected with Morse code and she shares it with her father. He thinks that it is the latitude and longitude of somewhere. When they arrive there, they enter somewhere where they mustn’t be. Just when they get in the car in order to go back, they are caught and removed to a place which is equipped with spaceships. After seeing his old boss, Cooper understands where they are. It is NASA.

being the captain in the spaceship, probably with no return mission; however, he lies to him while he is offering and says, ‘’Return is possible’’. The journey is necessary to solve the professor’s life’s work equation. The equation has a lack of a parameter; thus, the only way to find it is going into a black hole. However, according to science, it hasn’t been possible yet. If someone tries it, even manages it; one cannot be conscious in order to learn the parameter. The mission is the only way to enable people to survive who live on the uninhabitable planet of Earth. I think the script writers send a significant environmental message while they are describing this time’s world.

Cooper accepts the mission to save his family, but he holds back from telling Murph because the girl is more dependent on her father after her mother’s death. The girl is so angry at her father, she doesn’t say good bye when he is leaving.

Eventually, the space travel starts with three humans and a robot that is called Tars. It is like a human in several ways. For example, it gets sad, keeps a secret, and makes jokes. It has been coded by NASA to help the others during travel.

Close your eyes and imagine. You must climb a mountain and you don’t have enough time to climb it. It may take less time with the necessary equipment, but you are sure that it is hazardous. In fact, the certain solution is the most difficult; piercing the mountain. That’s why tunnels were made. It is necessary to handle transportation’s drawbacks and gain time. You can cross the inside of mountains by running and it takes a few minutes; however, you cannot manage it with the same effort. These tunnels are similar to wormholes. Normally, galaxy travelling takes much more time than a human’s lifetime such as 100,000,000 years and it isn’t possible for now. However, it takes less time via wormholes. It has the function of space-time curving when you enter one from one end. Of course, this is just a theory. A wormhole hasn’t been observed yet; however, scientists will keep claiming this idea until the opposite idea is proved.

Everything has been okay so far; however, after travel starts, the audience starts to get confused. What is a Wormhole? Or a black hole? What is Time Relativity? We live in three dimensions, but what is the fifth dimension? How is it possible? Or can be? No way! Questions’ answers and even more are in the rest of the article.

beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

‘’Time is relative.’’ It was originally proposed in 1905 by Albert Einstein, the most important scientist of the 18

20thCentury,in the Annalen der Physik Magazinein an article titled "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies’’. Explained simply, provided that matter becomes faster and faster, the track of time becomes slower and slower for the matter; as result, when the speed of light is passed, time must stop. In the theorem, to reach the speed of light isn’t possible because of the fact that when matter goes faster, it turns into kinetic energy. Therefore, endless mass is necessary to reach the speed of light. This theorem is very unusual, so it has been rejected by several scientists.

comprised of stars; when some stars’ fuel is used up, the stars fall in on themselves.

In black holes, time is slower than usual or time cannot be tracked in a black hole; it is a controversial subject. Let’s imagine two people. One of them is an observer and the other enters into a black hole. The observer cannot see his/her friend while the other is entering into the black hole because passing through an event horizon takes an eternal amount of time. They can observe blackholes by a variety of wave length light, but they don’t do it directly.

We will try to explain ‘’black holes’’: In astrophysics, black holes are cosmic matter which has a big mass. Their gravitational fields are very strong. It doesn’t allow anything to escape. The matter is called ‘black holes’ because they do not give light. Black holes can be formed in two ways. Black holes which have a super mass are located in the center of galaxies. They are comprised of dust clouds. Dust clouds assemble and fall down. The other type of black holes is beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

Finally, we interviewed ITU lecturer Assistant Prof Dr.Tolga Birkandan to explain the movie’s science to us. All the things in this movie are scientific. Some of them have been observed; however, other parts are theory. Making a non-scientific movie isn’t suitable for ‘Kip Thorne’’ who has accounted for everything about science ‘.He is a very significant scientist who studies gravitational physics and astrophysics. He is a person who has included time travelling in 19

the scientific field; therefore, in spite of the fact that everything which is mentioned in the film seems like science– fiction, the movie has a basis of reality. Meanwhile, while theorems are improved, new theorems will emerge. One of the most exciting new ideas was developed by Stephen Hawking. Hawking suggested, instead of there being an irrevocable event horizon, there is an apparent horizon that isn’t completely imprisoned information which enters into a black hole. If it is true, it seems that we must wait for a long time to prove it.

J.R.R Tolkien

J

ohn Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa in 1892. He is best known as the author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. Besides being a wonderful author, he was also a poet, a university professor and a philologist.

Tolkien was 4-years-old when his father passed away. His mom, Mabel, took him and his younger brother, Hilary, to Birmingham, England. In 1904, Tolkien had to face his mother's death, too. After being sent to live with relatives, he started college and studied Anglo-Saxon and Germanic languages and classic literature.

An interesting fact about Tolkien is that he served in World War I. He kept writing as he was fighting in battles, and during his time in the service, he got married. After his release from the army, he started teaching at the University of Leeds and a few years later, he became a professor at Oxford. During all this time, he kept beewriter ITU Writing Center Student Magazine

building Middle Earth in his mind and in 1937, he published The Hobbit. Although some critics thought the book was for children, most of the readers liked it and it became popular in a short time.

As the time passed, he completed his masterpiece The Lord of the Rings trilogy, inspired by ancient myths and legends. People liked this trilogy even more and started to form clubs, and some people tried to learn the fictional languages in those books.

21

Tolkien retired from his job in 1959, but he continued writing. After publishing his poetry collection Tree and Leaf, he lost his wife in 1971. Tolkien could only live 2 more years after this unfortunate event, and he passed away at the age of 81.

Douglas Adams Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge in 1952. He was educated at Essex and St John's College in Cambridge. He studied English literature.

He became famous with the radio series named The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Everyone loved this radio show very much, and it is published as a book. Then, a video game was made based on the show.

An interesting thing about Douglas is that he was very keen on music. He could play the guitar and he had twenty four guitars. Also he was a big fan of The Beatles and he mentioned them a lot in his writings. Just like his affection for The Beatles, his huge love for Pink Floyd has taken part in his books, too. The characters mumble their songs all the time.

Douglas Adams got married in 1991 and had a daughter. In 1999, Adams family moved to California. He was 49 years old when an attack stopped his heart. After his death, the rest of the family moved back to London.
