LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS
For over 18 months, IU Auditorium went without hosting a ticketed event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although our staff kept busy with virtual programming, our Open Air Venues initiative, and on-campus testing and mitigation, we eagerly awaited the day when we could welcome patrons back through our doors to enjoy performances by world-class artists on our stage. August of 2021 came, and our wait was finally over as IU resumed normal operations, allowing us to fully open for our 2021–2022 season. Despite navigating through new protocols and precautions to safely bring performers and patrons back into our building, the 2021–2022 season was one of our most successful yet. From hit Broadway titles Waitress and Jersey Boys, to a soldout Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott performance, IU Auditorium hosted nearly 60,000 patrons throughout our 2021–2022 academic year.
Alongside our full season of performances, we were able to offer a multitude of exciting opportunities for IU and Bloomington community members to interact with and learn from members of visiting productions. Through 50 different programs, including a residency with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, masterclasses taught by Broadway cast members, and discussions with highly esteemed musicians, we were able to reach 4,176 total educational outreach participants in 2021–2022.
Since opening our doors in 1941, IU Auditorium has been a leading performing arts organization in South Central Indiana in terms of quality, leadership, innovation, and overall guest satisfaction. As we are in the midst of our 2022–2023 season, we remain committed to upholding this high standard of quality and to our mission of creating meaningful opportunities for Indiana University and Bloomington community members to enrich their lives through the performing arts. Our team at IU Auditorium is continuously dedicated to exceeding expectations and providing exceptional experiences for our community. However, our success is only ever possible due to the generous support we receive from patrons, sponsors, donors, and the university. We deeply appreciate all who supported us as we reopened our doors and we hope you enjoy seeing in this report what made 2021–2022 so special for all of us!

In August 2021, for the first-time in nearly 18 months, we opened our doors to the public. It was a wonderful feeling to finally welcome our community into the building once again for live and in-person Broadway tours, Grammy Award-winning musical artists, world-renowned dance and orchestras, and more.
INTENSIVE FRESHMAN SEMINAR
Shortly after reopening, we hosted events for IU’s Intensive Freshman Seminar program with an open mic night and closing celebration. The two sessions allowed us to introduce IU Auditorium to 400 freshmen before the start of the fall semester. After standing quiet for so long, it was our first opportunity to have the building brimming with life once again.
FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES
Student staff and volunteers have always been the backbone of IU Auditorium. We are only able to uphold our high standard of quality in the services we provide each year thanks to the help of our student managers, interns, volunteer ushers, and box office staff. As our student staff is such a crucial component of the IU Auditorium experience, we didn’t truly feel whole again until students returned to campus full-time in August 2021. With their return, we were thrilled to welcome new student managers, box office staff, administrative interns, and ushers to the Auditorium team.
CULTUREFEST
Nothing celebrates the return of students to campus and all that it has to offer quite like IU’s annual CultureFest. Part of IU’s annual welcome week, CultureFest brought thousands of new IU students to our front curb to enjoy performances by various IU groups including Raas Royalty, Essence Dance Team, and the African American Dance Company. The event also included activity stations and food trucks around Showalter fountain throughout IU’s Fine Arts Plaza.
KELLEY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS INDUCTION
Kelley School of Business Induction Ceremonies marked our first large-scale event since reopening with over 3,000 in attendance. The annual ceremony welcomes newly admitted students into the Kelley School of Business, introducing them to faculty and alumni.
NEW IU AUDITORIUM STAFF
Along with our return to normal operations for the 2021–2022 season, we welcomed six new staff members to the IU Auditorium family. In their time here, they’ve already served as crucial members of our team, proving their initiative, dedication, and enthusiasm for the work we do. We are beyond grateful to have them with us.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT & COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT
Since opening our doors, IU Auditorium has focused heavily on student exposure to and interaction with the arts. By creating educational programs, employing students, and offering significant discounts on show tickets, we provide IU students with a myriad of accessible opportunities through which they can deepen their college experience.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
Throughout our season, we collaborate with visiting artists from around the globe to create interactive educational programs for IU students such as masterclasses, Q&As, and side-by-side rehearsals. These programs offer students the invaluable chance to connect with and learn directly from professional musicians, dance companies, and Broadway stars, among others. Through these interactions, students gain not only a deeper understanding of their craft, but also the inspiration to continue pursuing their professional goals.
MENTORSHIP
IU Auditorium staff members and departments offer a multitude of learning and mentorship opportunities for students on our staff. During the 2021–2022 school year, thanks to the generous support of Auditorium board members Jim and Joyce Grandorf, we hosted Grandorf Leadership Summit events in both October and February. These leadership development events are designed as one of the many ways IU Auditorium student staff members cultivate lifelong leadership and professional skills.
In October, attendees participated in a moderated discussion and Q&A with IU Auditorium alum Dave Neustadter, an executive producer with credits in 36 major motion pictures. The February event featured discussions with seven notable professionals, including IU Auditorium alumni, on several different topics. Both events ended with a networking session, allowing students to develop relationships with IU Auditorium alumni and staff members.
GIVE THE MAGIC
Annually, our Give the Magic program offers underserved community members the opportunity to attend a performance at IU Auditorium for free. In March 2022, thanks to the generosity of our partners at IU Health Riley Physicians and our Circle of Friends, along with the collaboration with eight local non-profit organizations, 323 community members were able to enjoy the excitement of Blue Man Group
IU AUDITORIUM GIVES
IU Auditorium continuously strives to find ways we can give back to our community. This year, in conjunction with our presentation of Waitress, we collected women’s clothing and accessories for My Sister’s Closet and United Way of Monroe County. In addition, we partnered with Hoosier Hills Food Bank throughout the holiday season to collect 386 pounds of food that provided families with 463 meals. We also provided veterans with free show tickets to Chimes of Christmas and An Officer and a Gentleman through Vet Tix, a national ticketing organization that supplies tickets to our nation’s military members and retirees.
IU AUDITORIUM KIDS ON CAMPUS
In March, we were thrilled to welcome nearly 1,000 eighth grade students from Monroe County School Corporation for a daytime lecture-demonstration presented by Martha Graham Dance Company. During the 60-minute program, students were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at staging a dance production, followed by a performance by the world-renowned dance company. This event marked our third Auditorium Kids on Campus daytime program. The Auditorium Kids on Campus initiative was created to provide local K-12 students with programming enabling them to experience the performing arts and interact with worldclass artists. We are excited to continue growing this event in the coming years with the support of Smithville Foundation, Southern Indiana Physicians, Riley Physicians, IU Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council, and IU Auditorium’s Circle of Friends.
LEARNING LABORATORY
IU Auditorium offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on, real-world experience in the live events industry through training and employment in roles such as volunteer ushers, ticket sales associates, and guest service personnel. We also employ students in our administrative offices, allowing them to explore or further a career path in marketing, development, event management, and more.
ARTIST ENGAGEMENT
With every act we bring to our stage, we identify meaningful ways for IU and Bloomington community members to interact with visiting performers. Through events such as masterclasses, post-show Q&As, and panel discussions, community members are able to learn directly from world-class artists in an intimate setting.
MASTERCLASSES AND WORKSHOPS
Kristin Chenoweth led a workshop for the IU Theatre department that allowed students to perform live in front of the Broadway star and receive feedback in real time. Anastasia cast members joined Brown County High School theatre students for a virtual class and discussion about touring nationally with a Broadway production. Martha Graham Dance Company’s rehearsal director conducted a masterclass for IU contemporary dance students using repertoire that has been performed by the world-class dance organization. A lead Jersey Boys cast member taught a workshop over Zoom for a musical theatre dance class using one of the timeless songs featured in the show.
ORCHESTRAL REPERTOIRE CLASSES
During their three-day residency in March, the Grammy Award-winning St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) led instrumental masterclasses for Jacobs School of Music percussion, woodwind, brass, and string students. These small and specialized interactions by instrument, as well of the rest of the residency, were attended by over 1,000 students. In addition, SLSO’s music director participated in a score reading session with orchestral conducting students, and world-renowned and Grammy-nominated pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet led a masterclass for the Jacobs School of Music piano department.
EDUCATIONAL TALKS
We also hosted discussions with world-renowned artists, such as Yo-Yo Ma (see below) and pre-show lectures presented by various IU faculty members, in addition to a series of panel discussions given by St. Louis Symphony Orchestra administrators for Hutton Honors College students, Arts Administration majors at O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and the Jacobs School of Music’s Project Jumpstart program participants. The Grammy-winning Silkroad Ensemble also participated in a moderated discussion with students and staff from the Hamilton Lugar School of International Studies as well as with the public at the conclusion of their Auditorium performance.
CAST & CREW INTERACTIONS
Cast and crew interactions include pre- and post-show Q&As, stage and wardrobe walkthroughs, and sideby-side orchestral rehearsals. During our 2021–2022 season, almost every act we brought to our stage also interacted with our patrons through masterclasses, educational talks, and other activities.
“YO-YO MA IS A WORLD TREASURE, IN MY OPINION, AND TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR AN ARTIST OF THAT CALIBER SPEAK AND INTERACT WITH A SMALL, RELATIVELY INTIMATE AUDIENCE IS PRETTY SPECIAL AND RARE.”
–Yo-Yo Ma Q&A Attendee
INDIANA UNIVERSITY PRIDE
At IU Auditorium, we pride ourselves on being a reliable resource for the university community. Whether we’re collaborating with other IU entities to execute flawless events, supplying staff and ticketing services, or opening our building for rehearsals and class tours, we continually strive to be of service to the IU community.
In 2021–2022, we joined forces with the Jacobs School of Music to offer students numerous learning opportunities, including rehearsal time on our Steinway D Concert Grand Piano and a 30-event residency with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. We worked alongside the African American Arts Institute to present Potpourri of the Arts, an annual event featuring Black music, dance, and culture that also served as a celebration for IU Soul Revue’s 50th anniversary. Furthermore, we provided staff for IU Arts and Humanities Council events such as First Thursdays and Granfalloon Festival.
Our box office continued to support ticketing needs across campus, including ticketing for IU Cinema, IU Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance events, and Union Board as well as for a growing number of regional IU campuses which led to our addition of a Centralized Ticketing Manager position to handle ticketing support to IUPUI and IU Southeast.
Our Event Services team continued to oversee multiple COVID-19 testing sites throughout the 2021–2022 academic year, along with coordinating guest services and staffing for IU Athletics.
COMMENCEMENT
As the academic year came to a close, IU Auditorium geared up for in-person commencement for the first time in three years, hosting 11 recognition ceremonies for eight IU schools and departments, and welcoming approximately 15,000 people through our doors. We also provided ticketing services and helped manage six Kelley School of Business ceremonies held at the Musical Arts Center in a single day.
IU AUDITORIUM STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
In addition to offering students opportunities for hands-on venue management, we also provide academic scholarships to qualified students each year. The IU Auditorium Student Scholarship honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director, Winston Shindell. A fierce advocate for students, Shindell created a professional environment that enabled students to gain practical knowledge by working directly with IU Auditorium staff. Congratulations to our 2021–2022 recipients, each a sterling example of the students IU Auditorium has had the honor of working with:
COLE LUELLWITZ HAILEE COOPER
IU AUDITORIUM + 1 SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2014, the IU Auditorium Alumni Association (IUAAA) celebrates a shared connection between Hoosiers of all ages, formed through participation with IU Auditorium as student managers, ushers, box office clerks, interns and graduate assistants, as well as many other roles. The IUAAA works to pay forward all that these alumi experienced as students working at IU Auditorium through the formation of the +1 Scholarship. The +1 Scholarship was created in honor of IU Auditorium Executive Director, Doug Booher, and his +1 customer service philosophy. This year’s +1 scholarship was awarded at our 2022 Spring Student Gathering to Sarah Cassidy, who exemplified the extraordinary customer service efforts that keep the Auditorium held in such high regard.
HONORING DOUG BOOHER
During the 2021–2022 season, our Doug Booher celebrated a quarter century of service to Indiana University. Doug, who began his work with IU Auditorium as a student usher, has contributed extensively to the improvement of events and experiences of the university over the last 25 years, and was recently appointed to Assistant Vice President of Events and Conference at IU. Along with IU Auditorium, Doug oversees University Events, Event Services, and IU Conferences.
INAUGURATION OF PAMELA WHITTEN
In November, IU Auditorium hosted the inauguration of Pamela Whitten as the 19th President of Indiana University. This landmark occasion was a celebration for the whole IU community, and we were beyond honored to play a significant role in the event. The inauguration began with a formal ceremony as President Whitten was officially sworn in on our stage, and then proceeded to the Fine Arts Plaza outside our front steps for a celebration as part of that month’s First Thursdays festival.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
Typically, the months of June and July at IU Auditorium bring thousands of incoming students and their parents to IU Auditorium for New Student Orientation. By partnering with the office of First Year Experiences to host orientation program sessions, we are able (and thrilled!) to introduce IU Auditorium to new students before they arrive on campus for the fall semester. After being held virtually for two years, New Student Orientation returned to our building in summer of 2022.
VENUE MANAGEMENT
Alongside IU Auditorium, our staff regularly manages events at other campus venues, including Presidents Hall and Woodburn Hall.
PRESIDENTS HALL
Presidents Hall, located inside the historic Franklin Hall, regularly serves as an event space for weddings, ceremonies, guest lectures, and other university events. Events in 2021–2022 included President Whitten’s inauguration luncheon, a moderated conversation with a television journalist as part of Korea Remixed, and Edgewood High School’s prom. All in all, we welcomed nearly 7,500 guests into Presidents Hall last year.
WOODBURN HALL
Due to its proximity to IU Auditorium, we host a handful of events inside Woodburn Hall each year. During our 2021–2022 season, events held in Woodburn Hall included IU Auditorium pre-show lectures, IU Public Safety Review, and IU’s Political Science Undergraduate Graduation Celebration.
INTERNATIONAL THESPIANS FESTIVAL
Originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, the International Thespians Festival returned to Bloomington this past June for the first time in decades. Inaugurally held at Indiana University in 1941, the annual high school theatre festival’s most recent home has been the University of Nebraska at Lincoln since 1995 before its return to Bloomington in 2022. IU’s mainstage theatres, small theatre spaces, and classrooms provided more room for attendees, accommodating the growing festival. During the week-long event, over 2,500 high school theatre students and teachers attended live performances at IU Auditorium, the Musical Arts Center, and other campus venues, and participated in 384 workshops covering every aspect of production and performance.
SEASON IN REVIEW
Our 2021–2022 season was another fantastic year of world-class arts and events, including Broadway hits, classical music, local favorites, and never-before-seen productions!
Along with our season, we were thrilled to host a number of additional events brought to us by students, community members, and promoter partners. These events bring new and important perspectives to our community and enhance public conversation, strengthening IU Auditorium’s role as a community gathering place.
