OCTOBER 17, 2024

THURSDAY • 7:30 P.M.

Bloomington’s favorite musical mastermind returns for his annual Halloween performance this year celebrating Edgar Allan Poe – in Silent Films and Radio Drama. Dennis James will provide the soundtrack on IU Auditorium’s 4,543 pipe organ for a pair of classic silent films and a live radio reenactment themed around Poe and his writings.

The evening will begin with a short film titled Edgar Allen Poe (the misspelling is purposeful) showing Poe was inspired to write his most famous poem, “The Raven,” as he desperately tries to sell it to support his sick wife. Then, back by popular demand, live actors including students from IU’s Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance will reenact another episode from the 1940s radio drama Inner Sanctum called “The Tell-Tale Heart.” The episode is a dramatization of Poe’s famous story of a man who could hear every sound on Earth, even things that did not exist.

The featured silent film that James will bring to life is titled The Avenging Conscience, a 1915 classic based on Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and his poem “Annabelle Lee.” Join us in costume as James celebrates one of America’s greatest writers in what has become an IU Auditorium tradition for over 50 years and counting!

Welcome to Hadestown, where a song can change your fate. Winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this acclaimed new show from celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today... and always.

Making its Bloomington debut, Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

– The Chicago Tribune

FEBRUARY 21, 2025

FRIDAY • 8 P.M.

The acclaimed and ever popular Japanese taiko drum group, Kodo, is bringing its engaging rhythm to IU Auditorium this season! The group will perform its newest work, Warabe, as part of its 2025 North American Tour showcasing the ensemble’s continued exploration of new and old traditions from Sado Island.

The taiko is a traditional Japanese drum with limitless rhythmic possibilities and Kodo’s mission is to explore those possibilities, and in the process forge new directions for a vibrant living artform. In Japanese, the word “Kodo” holds a double meaning. It can be translated as “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm, but it can also mean “drum” and “child.” This reflects Kodo’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. In Warabe, Kodo looks to its classic repertoire and aesthetics from the ensemble’s early days. This production blends simple forms of Taiko expression that celebrate the unique sound, resonance, and physicality synonymous with Kodo— forever children of the drum at heart.

Come experience the soul-stirring rhythm of life firsthand!

Internationally acclaimed and one of America’s finest, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is making its triumphant return to the IU Auditorium stage for the first time in nearly 50 years. While in Bloomington, the orchestra will not only perform, but also lead an engaging three-day residency with students from the Jacobs School of Music.

Celebrating over 125 years of diverse work and talent, the Bloomington program will include Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Copland’s Symphony No. 3. The performance will feature renowned pianist George Li with Matthias Pintscher conducting.

Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto churns with uberromantic melodies and Unsuk Chin’s music delights in contrasts. Copland’s last symphony, ringing with bells and brass, will conclude this magnificent evening. The finale builds on Fanfare for the Common Man—an enduring masterpiece written for and premiered by the CSO at their home, Music Hall—signaling the culmination and convergence of the composer’s entire career.

Through masterclasses, lectures, demonstrations, pre-event discussions, artist Q&As, and more, our engagement programming enriches the IU Auditorium experience and supports the educational mission of Indiana University.

Many of these experiences are open to the public! Be sure to keep an eye on our pre-event emails, Facebook event page, and IUauditorium.com for details on how you can take part in these exciting and enriching programs.

FAQS

CAN I ORDER TICKETS ONLINE?

Yes, once again in 2024–2025, online ordering via IUauditorium.com is the best way to subscribe or purchase tickets and provides you the opportunity to select your own seats. If you’d prefer that our box office select your seats for you, that is still an option. Please call us at (812) 855-1103 or email at tickets@iu.edu to let the box office know you’d prefer your seats be selected for you.

HOW DO I BECOME A SUBSCRIBER?

You can become a subscriber by purchasing at least one ticket to five or more event titles. New subscribers can begin purchasing their tickets to the 2024–2025 season on July 1. Along with other benefits, becoming a subscriber is one way to increase your Loyalty Points total—helping you get the best available seats. Patrons who wish not to purchase at least five events may purchase tickets as part of an exclusive season pre-order period taking place August 5–18. During this time, ticket buyers may purchase tickets at subscriber prices (savings of up to 15%). Single ticket prices go into effect August 19 (Les Misérables single tickets go on sale July 12).

WHAT IF I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THE ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION PROCESS WORKS?

Visit IUauditorium.com/Subscribe for information on how to purchase your subscription, or if you’d prefer that our box office select your seats for you, that is still an option. Please call us at (812) 855-1103 or email us at tickets@iu.edu to let the box office know you’d prefer your seats be selected for you.

CAN I PURCHASE MY SUBSCRIPTION USING THE TICKETMASTER APP?

IU Auditorium season tickets are available for purchase through IUauditorium.com. You can purchase on your mobile device using an interactive seat map if you prefer, but tickets are only available to purchase and manage at IUauditorium.com.

WHAT ARE LOYALTY POINTS AND HOW DO I EARN THEM?

Loyalty Points are earned through subscription and donation history with IU Auditorium and are how we reward our loyal patrons with better seating options. Orders by Loyalty Points-holding patrons are made before new subscriptions and the general public in descending order—meaning the greater number of points you have, the sooner you’ll get to select your seats. For more specifics on our Loyalty Points system, please visit IUauditorium.com/Loyalty or call the box office at (812) 855-1103.

WHAT IF I EXCHANGE A TICKET FOR A DIFFERENT TICKET OF HIGHER VALUE?

If a ticket is exchanged for that of a higher value, you will be charged the difference in price.

WHAT KINDS OF ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES ARE OFFERED BY THE AUDITORIUM?

We strive to accommodate all of our guests. If you require special accommodation, including wheelchair-accessible seating, amplification headsets, large-print or braille programs, audio description, or ASL services, please contact our box office at (812) 855-1103. Also, space in front of IU Auditorium around Showalter Fountain has been designated as accessible parking for those with state-issued disability tags. For more information on our accessibility offerings, please contact our box office at (812) 855-1103.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE IU BLOOMINGTON STUDENT DISCOUNT?

Each IU Bloomington student with a current, valid IUB student ID may redeem one student-priced ticket per event for their personal use. Simply select the student-priced ticket option when purchasing tickets at IUauditorium.com. Although students need not be present at the time of purchase, they will be required to present their student ID upon entry. Those without ID may be asked to return to the box office in order to upgrade their ticket for the general public price.

I’M A STUDENT, BUT NOT AN IU BLOOMINGTON STUDENT, CAN I STILL RECEIVE A STUDENT DISCOUNT?

We’re sorry, but only students enrolled on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University may use a student-priced ticket to gain admission. For our family-friendly shows, the student discount is also extended to children.

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY SUBSCRIPTION ALL AT ONCE?

When you become a subscriber by choosing five or more event titles, you are entitled to take advantage of the convenient 50/50 Payment Option in order to secure your great seats. Just check the 50/50 Payment Option box online and 50% of your total subscription order cost plus a $10 fee will be billed to your credit card when your order is received. The remaining 50% will be automatically billed to the same card in August.

CAN I PAY BY BURSAR BILLING ONLINE AND OVER THE PHONE?

Yes. As an IUB student, you may charge tickets to your bursar account.

HOW DO I PAY USING IU PAYROLL DEDUCTION?

The minimum order for IU payroll deductions is $100 and all orders using this method must be received by August 31, 2024. Payroll deduction is not available for online ordering. Any payroll deduction orders must be made over the phone or in person.
