2024 ANNUAL REPORT

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Our 2023–2024 season was another banner year for IU Auditorium. For the second year in a row, we broke our annual box office sales record for all our ticketed shows combined and set a new mark for sales for a twoperformance day event. This success is thanks to the wonderful support from our patrons, donors, corporate partners, and Indiana University, but this all wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our staff who work so hard to provide world-class arts and entertainment experiences for our community.

We welcomed over 182,000 guests in all of our facilities in 2023–2024. The year was highlighted with a trio of powerhouse comedians who performed on our stage to packed houses including Jerry Seinfeld, John Oliver, and Shane Gillis. Seinfeld’s two sets shattered our two-performance day box office record which bested his previous record in that category from his 2003 performances. The year also saw the debuts of Broadway hits Mean Girls and Come From Away, a performance from legends Patti LuPone and Branford Marsalis, the world’s foremost all-male comic ballet company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (the Trocks), the return of Bloomington native Joshua Bell as director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and so much more.

Beyond the stage, we expanded our education and engagement efforts with the addition of a full-time staff member dedicated to those initiatives. We reached over 5,100 IU and area community members with over 50 different educational and engagement program opportunities in 2023–2024. Thanks to support from donors and corporate partners, we were able to provide nearly 1,000 tickets to multiple season shows to local nonprofit organizations, Title I schools, and IU students, the most we’ve ever been able to provide for our Give the Magic ticketing program. And we have our sights to best these marks in 2024–2025.

Since opening our doors in 1941, IU Auditorium has taken great pride in being one of the leading performing arts organizations in Indiana. We continue to be committed to upholding a high standard of quality and to our mission of creating meaningful experiences on stage and beyond into the future.

But again, this is not possible without the wonderful support we continue to receive from patrons, corporate partners, donors, and Indiana University. Thank you for a record year in 2023–2024, and we hope you enjoy our look back on the year that was in this annual report.

BEST BUDDIES LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE RETURNS

After a hiatus due to the pandemic, we were thrilled to welcome back one of our favorite summer events when Best Buddies International returned to the IU Bloomington campus for its annual Best Buddies Leadership Conference in July 2023. The conference brings together leaders, volunteers, and community advocates from around the world to imagine, create, lead, and empower the future of the disability rights and inclusive movement. It is always an inspiring weekend of events that are on display at IU.

A BOOGIE WIT DA HOODIE AT SIMON SKJODT ASSEMBLY HALL

After ticketing a show for half the permanent seating in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in the fall of 2022, we led the ticketing operations for the entire arena in September 2023 as Platinum Entertainment Group and Concert Crave presented Bronx-bred hip-hop artist A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie as part of his Me vs. Myself: The College Tour. This full arena ticketed concert marked the first of its kind inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since Luke Bryan performed there in 2017. The event was a huge success as nearly 8,000 guests experienced the show.

Best Buddies Leadership Conference returned to our stage in 2023.

THE YEAR OF COMEDIANS

In 2023–2024, we were fortunate to host some of the biggest names in comedy today as Shane Gillis, Jerry Seinfeld, and John Oliver all appeared on our stage to packed houses. Gillis and Oliver both made their IU Auditorium debuts in September and December, respectively. Seinfeld’s October shows marked his first appearance in Bloomington in 20 years. His two sets shattered our two-performance day record for box office sales, besting his previous record in the same category from 2003.

INDIANA DANCE COMPANY “HOLIDANCE”

In December, we hosted Indiana Dance Company’s annual holiday show, the Holidance Spectacular, for the first time. The show featured a variety of dance styles with performers ranging in ages two to 18, many making their IU Auditorium stage dancing debut. The performance was a great success for this local Bloomington company, creating another delightful experience as part of the holiday season.

NLE CHOPPA BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE

We partnered for the first time with Platinum Entertainment Group as they presented rap artist NLE Choppa on our stage with special guests Luh Tyler and TisaKorean in February. The concert was a hit and brought a packed audience with many first-time visitors to the Auditorium for a night of amazing rap music.

Three top-tier comedians, Shane Gillis, Jerry Seinfeld, and John Oliver, graced our stage last year.
NLE Choppa headlined a concert in February 2024.

PEACH PIT AS SWEET AS EVER

In March, Union Board presented the wistful grooves and sun-kissed melodies of indie-band Peach Pit on our stage. This groovy show was experienced by nearly 2,000 IU students and concertgoers as the band made its IU Auditorium debut. IU Auditorium’s partnership with Union Board is as strong as ever and we take great pride in working alongside the board to bring artists, guest speakers, and performers to campus with IU student attendance in mind. This event, among others Union Board presented in our space in 2023–2024, is a prime example of that strong partnership.

STAGE EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENTS

Last fall, our theatre’s counterweight fly rail system underwent a significant renovation, enhancing safety for our crew and performers. We’ve upgraded to state-of-the-art equipment, including industry-standard size battens, head blocks, and ropes above the stage. With this modernization, our theatre is now equipped to support cutting-edge productions for years to come.

Union Board presented Peach Pit inside IU Auditorium in March.

“We had not been to an event at the Auditorium in many years, but our experience with the Come From Away show has convinced us that we need to return soon for another event.”

Quotes from IU Auditorium patrons about

“Along with Les Misérables and RENT, this was by far the best show to come to the Auditorium in the last 40 years. It was the third time I have seen it, and it only gets better each time.”

“This performance was outstanding. The cast and musicians were incredible and in constant connection with the audience. The response of the audience was electric. A performance that set the bar high. Thank you for this experience.”

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Year in and year out, IU Auditorium focuses on providing students and local communities with exposure to the arts. In 2023–2024, we expanded these efforts further than we ever have before thanks to the generous support of our donors and partners. We were able to add a full-time position dedicated to our engagement efforts as we brought on a new Assistant Director for Education and Engagement in September. With this extra support, we were able to create unique and new programs and opportunities for the IU and area communities to interact with visiting performers. For the year, more than 5,100 people participated in over 50 engagement events.

AUDITORIUM KIDS ON CAMPUS

In early October 2023, over 1,000 eighth graders traveled from Monroe County and Washington, Indiana, to IU Auditorium for our annual Auditorium Kids on Campus event. A dance company dedicated to the African-American tradition of “stepping,” Step Afrika! performed its high-energy routine and even had the students out of their seats learning choreography and chants. The students left having a wonderful interactive experience.

THE INCOMPARABLE PATTI LUPONE MAKES IMPACT WITH IU STUDENTS

The iconic American actress and singer Patti LuPone provided a masterclass for musical theatre students of Indiana University prior to her evening performance on our stage in October 2023. With her decades of experience in the professional world and, of course, on the Broadway stage, LuPone offered the seniors of IU’s musical theatre program feedback on live solo performances in real time in front of their peers. She shared with them tips on vocal technique, audition strategies, repertoire choice, and how to navigate the world of the performing arts as a young performer. The over 100 students and faculty in attendance were also able to participate in a Q&A with LuPone.

STOMP PETTING ZOO

Prior to the performance of STOMP, audience members of all ages were invited to try out a variety of percussion instruments in the Auditorium’s Grand Foyer. This pre-show activity was led by music education students within the Jacobs School of Music. The students kept a steady beat, while participants grabbed maracas, drums of all shapes and sizes, and tambourines, playing and dancing along to the beat. This activity was intended to encourage percussive exploration and exposure to the many different techniques utilized in the performance of percussion instruments.

BRANFORD MARSALIS INTERACTS WITH IU STUDENTS

Jazz legend Branford Marsalis took part in two discussions with the students from the Jacobs School of Music during his Bloomington stay in January. The first conversation was with over 70 IU jazz students and professors. He provided career advice for the young jazz musicians and insight on the state of jazz in the modern world. The second conversation included students studying composition at Jacobs. Marsalis spoke about how he composes from the viewpoint of a performer and his approach to writing music for films. This was an incredible experience for these students to hear from an icon in the jazz world.

HAIRSPRAY CAST MEMBERS LEAD SENIOR CENTER ENGAGEMENT

In an effort to bring the performing arts to community members unable to leave their homes, we hosted a Hairspray Sing and Play Along session at a local senior living facility. The session included a music therapist leading the attendees through songs of the 1960s and a discussion of the residents’ favorite bands from the groovy decade. Two Hairspray cast members joined the music therapist and shared with the attendees their favorite dance moves from the show and discussed what it was like to be a part of a traveling Broadway tour.

MEAN GIRLS PRE - SHOW TALK

Prior to the evening performance of Mean Girls the Musical, two professors from the IU School of Social Work, Tammi Nelson and Nick Carpenter, led a pre-show talk on the topic of resilience from Mean Girls. They spoke to an audience ranging from teenagers to senior citizens. The professors led the audience through an examination of bullying trends and current safeguards in schools, the forms of bullying present in the Mean Girls story, and their impact on the development of school-aged children.

A WEEKEND WITH THE TROCKS

The all-male drag ballet troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (AKA the Trocks) provided a weekend of engaging and educational events for our local community and students. It all began with a screening of the documentary Ballerina Boys with company members in attendance. The company’s ballet master Raffaele Morra provided a Q&A session after the screening, sharing his experience with the Trocks.

The following morning, Morra led a masterclass for IU students studying ballet and contemporary dance. At the same time, three company members hosted a community conversation in our lobby and graciously answered questions from the audience on the topics of training, auditioning, and being on tour with the Trocks. After a short break, community members were invited to attend a dress rehearsal prior to that evening’s public performance. Morra walked the audience through the warm-up routine and explained the rehearsal process. Morra hosted a final Q&A session for any audience members about the upcoming performance and the rehearsal they just experienced.

GIVE THE MAGIC EXPANSION

In previous years, our Give the Magic ticketing program was able to provide local nonprofit organizations and Title I schools with complimentary tickets to a single show at the Auditorium. This past season, the Give the Magic program expanded immensely as it provided nearly 1,000 tickets to over half of our season performances, including a record 676 tickets alone for Shrek – The Musical. We have goals to continue growing this program and providing more access to community members and beyond through this incredible ticketing program.

The ballet master of the Trocks, Raffaele Morra, along with company members took part in several interactions with IU and community members during their February 2024 visit.

JAMES J. LAUGHLIN PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCE FUND ESTABLISHED

Dr. Jim Laughlin, a great friend and supporter of IU Auditorium, retired last spring after many years of dedicated service to Riley Physicians Pediatrics here in Bloomington. Dr. Laughlin’s impact on the community has been immense, notably through a longtime partnership with IU Auditorium, where he serves as the Chair of the Auditorium Board of Advisors. Dr. Laughlin has led a decades-long partnership between Riley Physicians and IU Auditorium that has allowed thousands of local children, students, and their families to experience worldclass performing arts experiences here in Bloomington. Dr. Laughlin is passionate about the performing arts and their influence on the health and well-being for so many people, especially youth. Through Dr. Laughlin’s leadership and vision, Riley Physicians’ partnership with IU Auditorium grew from supporting a single show annually starting in the mid-1990s to providing impactful experiences to thousands of community members each year, including support for our Kids on Campus, Kids Night on Broadway, and Give the Magic initiatives.

In appreciation of Dr. Laughlin for his years of service and to celebrate his retirement, his Riley Physicians colleagues honored him by creating the James J. Laughlin Performing Arts Experience Fund. This special fund directs gifts made in his honor toward IU Auditorium's numerous community engagement programs to grow and thrive for the years to come and ensure that Riley Physicians Pediatrics play a leading role in making the performing arts accessible to everyone in our community.

JOSHUA BELL AND ACADEMY OF ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS INTERACTION

In March, Jacobs School of Music students and loyal patrons of the Auditorium were invited to an Academy of St Martin in the Fields open rehearsal led by Bloomington native and musical director Joshua Bell. After the rehearsal, Bell spoke with the attendees about his inspiration and future of the ensemble and how he navigates a rehearsal and a performance acting as both the first violinist and leader of the ensemble. After the show, Bell had a meet and greet with students from the Jacobs School and supportive fans in the community.

THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY SENIOR ACTIVITY

Prior to the evening performance of The Simon and Garfunkel Story, we partnered with a local music therapist to visit another local assisted living facility, Evergreen Village, to provide residents there with a sing and play along session in conjunction with their 1960s Day Celebration. The seniors arrived at the event dressed for the occasion in tie-dye and colored glasses, and scattered around the building were popular sayings from that decade.

The seniors in attendance sang, played percussion instruments, and grooved along to the music of Simon and Garfunkel. They discussed the lyrics and the meaning behind a few of the tunes and learned about the iconic duo’s rise to fame.

Later that evening, the residents attended a performance of The Simon and Garfunkel Story at the Auditorium. The activities director at Evergreen Village shared that for some of the residents, it was the first time they had ever been to IU Auditorium or seen a concert of this magnitude. The sense of excitement was so real, that it could be heard, seen, and felt. Seniors need meaningful experiences to be valued and to have fun, and that is what this concert and our staff provided them.

Musical activities were enjoyed by this lively group at Evergreen Village prior to their visit to IU Auditorium.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY INDIANA UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY

At IU Auditorium, we take great pride in being a supportive and impactful partner within the Indiana University community. Our commitment is reflected in our numerous collaborations with IU organizations to ensure seamless event execution, providing highly qualified staff and expert ticketing services, and our dedication to offering our facilities for the diverse needs of IU students and staff. We aim to remain a valuable resource for our campus community.

In 2023–2024, we again worked alongside the African American Arts Institute to present its annual Potpourri of the Arts, an event featuring Black music, dance, and culture. We assisted Union Board to present A Conversation with Andrew Yang and Taryn Southern, the second annual Bloomington Ki Badtameezi, Speaking of Excellence with Hunter Schafer, and a concert headlined by Peach Pit. Also, we again provided staff for IU Arts and Humanities Council events such as First Thursdays and Granfalloon Festival.

Our box office expanded its operations to sell more tickets across various venues than ever before. We led the ticketing operations for two Memorial Stadium events and the Little 500 races at Bill Armstrong Stadium over a course of two weeks as well as a Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall full arena concert in September. The box office also continued to support ticketing needs for our annual campus partners, including IU Cinema, IU Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance events, and Union Board, as well as partnering with regional IU campuses on various events.

13 CEREMONIES • 4,609 GRADUATES • 16,400+ GUESTS

COMMENCEMENT

In May, we were honored to host 13 recognition ceremonies for the class of 2024 for various schools and departments. There were 4,609 graduates recognized at those ceremonies, and we welcomed over 16,400 guests through our doors.

IU AUDITORIUM STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

In addition to offering students opportunities for hands-on venue management experience, we also provide academic scholarships to qualified students each year. The IU Auditorium Student Scholarship program honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director Winston Shindell. A fierce advocate for students, Shindell created a professional environment that enabled students to gain practical knowledge by working directly with IU Auditorium staff. Congratulations to our 2023–2024 recipients, each a sterling example of the students IU Auditorium has had the honor of working with:

IU AUDITORIUM +1 SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 2014, the IU Auditorium Alumni Association (IUAAA) celebrates a shared connection between Hoosiers of all ages, formed through participation with IU Auditorium as student managers, ushers, box office clerks, interns, and graduate assistants, as well as many other roles. The IUAAA works to pay forward all that these alumni experienced as students working at IU Auditorium through the formation of the +1 Scholarship. The +1 Scholarship was created in honor of IU Auditorium former Executive Director Doug Booher and his +1 customer service philosophy. This year’s +1 scholarship was awarded at our spring 2024 end-of-year student banquet to Ellie Lamont, who exemplified the extraordinary customer service efforts that keep the Auditorium held in such high regard.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

During June and July, we were honored to again welcome new IU students through our doors as their first stop for New Student Orientation. In partnership with the Office of First Year Experiences here at IU, it’s an honor being part of the welcoming of new students and parents each year.

INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN FESTIVAL

For a third consecutive year, the International Thespian Festival took over the IU Bloomington campus and our building in June. The annual weeklong summer event saw participation grow once again in 2024 as 3,400 high school theatre students and teachers took part. Live performances and workshops took place throughout the week in various spaces including IU Auditorium, the Musical Arts Center, and other campus venues and classrooms. Our stage was used for the festival’s opening and closing ceremonies as well as productions of Alice by Heart, Between the Lines, Indecent, Kinky Boots, and Frozen

The International Thespian Festival connected thousands of high school students for a weeklong learning experience.

TICKETING MEMORIAL STADIUM EVENTS AND LITTLE 500

We always take great pride in pursuing new opportunities to partner with campus and external organizations to aid in putting on the best events possible. In 2023–2024, our box office and marketing teams were an essential part in the planning and execution of the ticketing and logistics of three major off-site events on campus: the Hoosier Cosmic Celebration concert and the Full Ride Tour featuring Kane Brown, both at Memorial Stadium; as well as the annual Little 500 races at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Our team handled all ticketing operations for both events and worked alongside University Communications and Marketing in the promotion of these events as needed.

Indiana University’s Hoosier Cosmic Celebration was a once-in-a-lifetime event celebrating the April 8 solar eclipse in which Bloomington was in the path of totality. Ten-time Grammy Award-nominated singer, songwriter, and actress Janelle Monáe headlined the event that also included appearances by beloved American actor William Shatner and America’s first woman of color to travel to space, Mae Jemison. There were also performances by various IU students and faculty from the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, the Jacobs School of Music, and The Marching Hundred.

We worked alongside major music promoter Doussan Music Group as well as premium live events group On Location to present the inaugural Full Ride Tour featuring country stars Kane Brown, Jon Pardi, Jessie Murph, and IU alum Clayton Anderson. The event marked the first full-blown ticketed music concert at Memorial Stadium in over 30 years.

For the first time ever, our box office partnered with the IU Student Foundation for ticketing needs for the world’s greatest college bike race, the Little 500. The April events marked the 36th women’s and 73rd men’s races at IU.

Kane Brown headlined The Full Ride Tour, marking the first full concert event inside Memorial Stadium in three decades.
The legendary William Shatner took the stage to address an eager audience.
Janelle Monae brought an energy-packed performance to Memorial Stadium.
The Little 500 delivered another exciting show of grit and determination in April.

VENUE MANAGEMENT VENUE MANAGEMENT

Beyond IU Auditorium, our staff also managed events at other campus venues, including Presidents Hall and Woodburn Hall.

PRESIDENTS HALL

Located inside historic Franklin Hall near Kirkwood Avenue, Presidents Hall serves as a frequent event space for weddings, ceremonies, guests lectures, and other university events. In 2023–2024, the beautiful space was used for an array of events including the Indianapolis Prize Lecture by Dr. Pablo Borboroglu, the Patten Lecture by Michael Oppenheimer, IU Asian Culture’s 25th Anniversary, Kelley School of Business’ National Diversity Case Competition, Arnolt Center Symposium, Grandorf Leadership Summit, Office of Sorority and Fraternity’s Awards, and numerous weddings, to name a few.

WOODBURN HALL

Woodburn Hall hosted events in 2023–2024, including a screening of Beyond Zero with Professor Bryan Orthel, a discussion with U.S. archivist David Ferriero, Indiana Junior League testing, and IU’s Political Science graduation celebration.

STAFF ENRICHMENT STAFF ENRICHMENT

GRANDORF STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Over 70 IU students employed by the Auditorium attended our annual leadership summit in April of 2024. Thanks to the generosity of Jim and Joyce Grandorf, these students experienced a full day of leadership sessions, gaining insight and lessons they will take with them into their post-graduate lives.

This year, Karen Gahl-Mills, Director of the Arts Administration Programs at the O’Neill School, led the leadership sessions. She spoke to the students about what it means to be a leader, and when it is time to be a leader and when it is time to follow. The students ended their day with a group challenge to build a structure with only paper and tape. After, they discussed what they noticed throughout the challenge. They reflected on the leadership strategies they used in this challenge and hope to carry with them after the summit.

The Auditorium’s goal is to provide these hard-working and dedicated students with a fun and energetic day of professional development annually with this event.

IU AUDITORIUM STAFF RETREAT AT WONDERLAB

In August 2023, we held a one-day IU Auditorium staff experiential retreat at WonderLab in Bloomington. The event took place in one of their meeting areas and allowed for a unique venue and experience for staff to learn and grow together beyond a normal day-to-day office location.

The day started with a presentation and exercise that determined each staff member’s “shape” of personality and work style led by Lita Pener, current Director/ Deputy Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Coordinator at IU Northwest. Each group then worked together to develop a poster display on how they work in their unique style. These were then shared with the entire group to learn more about how we can best work together.

After a team lunch, the afternoon session included a presentation called “Love + Work: Finding the Love in What You Do” by Work Life Analyst for Healthy IU, Angela Reese. It was a wonderful day and an opportunity to grow together as a team.

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR ANOTHER RECORD YEAR

SEASON RECORDS ARE SET AGAIN

For a second consecutive year, we set new box office record marks during 2023–2024. We again set a new year-long box office record with $3,326,327.58 in gross ticket sales for all shows that played inside our theatre. We also set a new show-specific record when legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld took our stage for two performances.

JERRY SEINFELD BESTS HIS OWN TWO - SHOW DAY BOX OFFICE RECORD

We were fortunate to host comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld on our stage last October for two sold-out stand-up performances over the course of a single evening. Not only did Seinfeld return to our stage for the first time in 20 years, but he also returned in record-breaking style as the two performances set a new IU Auditorium box office mark for a two-performance day. It was a memorable and hilarious evening for those in attendance.
