LE T T ER FRO M T HE DI R ECTO R The 2022–2023 IU Auditorium season was one for the record books. We set a new annual box office sales record for all our ticketed shows combined and set new marks for single concert sales, two-night concert sales, and three-night Broadway sales. We are so grateful for all our patrons and supporters for helping achieve these feats. Because of the hard work and dedication of our staff in providing world-class arts and entertainment experiences for our community, we welcomed over 168,000 guests in all of our facilities in 2022–2023. Indiana’s own John Mellencamp opened his 76-date Live and In Person tour on our stage with two nights of record-breaking performances in February. Broadway smash-hit The Book of Mormon performed on three dates in January, again setting the bar for three-night sales for a Broadway show on our stage. Over 69,000 patrons came through our doors for ticketed events in 2022–2023 with additional performances from pop sensation Conan Gray, the 25th anniversary celebration of IU’s own Straight No Chaser, classical music mixed with hip-hop with Black Violin, Grammy-winning pianist Emanuel Ax, Broadway favorites My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, and so much more. Along with these amazing performances, we were able to reach nearly 4,000 IU and Bloomington community members through engagement and educational outreach programs with visiting artists and productions. Through nearly 50 different programs including masterclasses, pre-show talks, a state-wide residency with world-renowned dance company Ballet Hispánico, and more, we continued to our efforts to bring the arts to campuses and local communities. For over eight decades, we at IU Auditorium have taken great pride in being one of the leading performing arts organizations in Indiana in terms of quality, leadership, innovation, and overall guest satisfaction. With the 2023–2024 season in full swing, we remain committed to upholding this high standard of quality and to our mission of creating meaningful opportunities, with plans already in the works to expand upon our education and engagement initiatives. But none of this is possible without the wonderful support we continue to receive from patrons, corporate partners, donors, and Indiana University. Thank you for a banner year in 2022–2023, and we hope you enjoy our look back on the year that was in this annual report.

CultureFest celebrates the arts and culture found on IU's campus.

CU LTUR E F EST SETS TO N E FO R START OF THE YEAR

A major highlight of Welcome Week each year is CultureFest. This event is an amazing introduction for new students to learn about the arts, entertainment, and cultures celebrated right here on their front doorstep on the IU Bloomington campus. CultureFest brings thousands of new IU students to the Fine Arts Plaza in front of our building to enjoy performances by various IU groups including Raas Royalty, Essence Dance Team, and African American Dance Company. And the day is filled with music, activity stations, and food trucks as well.

IU AU D I TOR I U M HOSTS K I N SEY 75TH ANNIVERSARY SYM P OS I U M

In September, it was our pleasure to host the first day of the Kinsey Institute’s 75th Anniversary Research Symposium in our Grand Foyer and Hall of Murals. The event celebrated the Kinsey Institutes’ legacy of transformative research in topics of sexuality, gender, reproduction, and relationships, along with its commitment to the preservation and documentation of sexual expression around the world in its collections of art, archives, and cultural ephemera. The day at IU Auditorium started with panels featuring current and former Kinsey Institute researchers as well as luminaries in the fields of sexology and sexual diversity, then shifted to a dinner for guests in attendance.

P O P ART I ST CO N A N GRAY SEL L S OUT IN MINUTE

We hosted platinum-selling singer, songwriter, and pop sensation Conan Gray on October 1, 2022, as part of his Superache tour, his biggest headlining tour to date. The show sold out in a matter of minutes and the energy in the building for the show was nearly through the roof. Fans were treated to an amazing performance by Gray and the cheers were some of the loudest ever heard inside our theatre.

A full house awaiting Conan Gray's show at IU Auditorium. 6

A Conversation with Pitbull hosted by Union Board.

A CO NV E RSATI O N WI T H PI T BU L L AND F IRST T H U RS DAYS

For the first time ever, we played host to a major ticketed event on the same evening as an IU Arts and Humanities Council’s First Thursday event as Union Board presented A Conversation with Pitbull in April. The Pitbull conversation was free to students and discounted to IU faculty/staff, and every ticket was claimed to see the world-wide pop sensation and entrepreneur. Over 2,300 guests for the First Thursdays event outside and over 3,000 tickets distributed for the Pitbull event inside made for an exciting evening on the Fine Arts Plaza and inside our building. Guests were treated to live performers, artists booths, food trucks, and more for the First Thursdays festival before Pitbull took the stage for a lecture and moderated conversation on his modest upbringing and how he found success in life.

CO M E D I A N B I L L BU RR P ER FO R MS AT SI M O N S K JO DT ASS E M B LY H A LL For the first time since 2017, we partnered with Live Nation to present and ticket an event at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, as we hosted Grammy-nominated comedian and TV and film star Bill Burr on September 30, 2022. One of the top comedic voices of his generation, Burr provided an evening of laughs to the over 5,500 people in attendance.

NOA H K AH A N’S STA R R I S ES AT IU AU D I TOR I U M

In March, Union Board presented up and coming folk/pop star Noah Kahan on our stage for an amazing concert. The show was experienced by over 2,000 IU students as the young star was on his ascension to national prominence thanks in part to his huge hit single “Stick Season.” Union Board and IU Auditorium have always had a strong partnership bringing artists and performers to campus with the IU student audience in mind and this was another prime example of that strong relationship. 7

F RO N T E XT E R I O R GETS A FACELIFT

Last fall, the front exterior of our building underwent a tuckpointing renovation to improve and maintain the integrity and beauty of our historic gathering place. The work did not hinder the 2022–2023 season schedule, but at its completion, the front of our building shined brighter than it had in years.

STRA I G H T NO C HASER C EL EB RATES 25 YEARS WITH S P ECI A L E X H IB I T A N D PERFO RMANCE

It’s always special when Straight No Chaser returns home to where it all began here at IU, but its December 2022 performance on our stage was extra special as it was part of the group’s 25th Anniversary Celebration tour. To commemorate the occasion, a special exhibit was put on display at University Collections at McCalla on campus that included a blend of Straight No Chaser’s history and rise to fame with fan-made memorabilia, original sheet music, gold records, concert backgrounds, and tour passes. A special reception took place on the afternoon prior to the performance with current and former members of the group in attendance. To keep the celebration going during the evening performance here at IU Auditorium, the current members of Straight No Chaser welcomed back former members of the group to the stage to sing their worldwide viral arrangement of the “12 Days of Christmas,” which first garnered attention when they performed at Indiana University 25 years ago.

Straight No Chaser celebrated their 25th anniversary with an extra special performance of "12 Days of Christmas."

B LO O MINGTON KI BA DTA MEEZI BOLLYWOOD DA N CE COMPETITION B ECO MES NEW ANNUAL EV EN T

In April, Union Board hosted the first ever Bloomington Ki Badtameezi, Indiana University’s premier Bollywood fusion dance competition, on our stage. The event featured eight collegiate dance teams from all over the country. Each team performed a short dance routine that began with a video introduction about the performance, followed by a routine that consisted of seven to nine different segments featuring different songs and styles of dance. This was the start of what Union Board hopes will be an annual event with the next one planned for February 2024.

K EL L EY I - CORE CASE KICKS O F F AT IU AUDITORIUM FOR F I RST TIME

For the first time ever, we partnered with the Kelley School of Business to coordinate and ticket their annual I-Core Case Launch in our theatre. Over 1,736 Kelley students participated last November as this event is one of the final parts of an I-Core semester. The I-Core semester at Kelley is designed to give students several real-time experiences that challenge them to solve cross functional business problems while developing their professional and leadership skills.

I U AU DITORIUM ANNOUNCES N EW SEASON

Again this year, we revealed our 2023–2024 schedule exclusively to our Circle of Friends patrons and corporate partners in May. The evening began with a cocktail hour in the Hall of Murals before moving to our Grand Foyer for dinner. Then, everyone made their way into our theatre for the big reveal. Executive Director, Maria Talbert, and Director of Ticketing and Sales, Ben Harris, announced the schedule one-by-one. And to make the night extra special, guests were treated to live performances from IU students and graduates of the Jacobs School of Music and the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, including pianist Mireia Frutos Fernandez, vocalist Adriana Nicole Torres Diaz, and musical theatre graduate Cole Winston. The trio performed songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, Shrek – The Musical, and The Simon & Garfunkel Story. The evening then concluded with show-inspired desserts back in our Grand Foyer. Many styles of dance were featured at the Bollywood fusion dance competition.

The Hall of Murals was packed with excited donors eager to learn the new 2023–2024 show schedule.

Vocalist Adriana Nicole Torres Diaz and pianist Mireia Frutos Fernandez performed songs from the upcoming season.

COM MU NI TY EN GAGE ME N T Every year, IU Auditorium focuses on providing students with exposure to and interaction within the arts. By creating educational programs, employing students, and offering opportunities for the IU and Bloomington community to interact with visiting performers, we provide a myriad of accessible opportunities for the communities we serve. Here’s a snapshot of programs and interactions we provided in 2022–2023.

SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR WORKSHOP AND Q&A

The Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir kicked off our season of engagement, as members of the group sat in on a moderated discussion on South African Music and Culture, then led a workshop through singing and dancing featuring one of the songs in their repertoire. Students from IU’s African American Arts Institute as well as departments of Ethnomusicology, Anthropology, and African American and African Diaspora Studies participated in this experience.

BROADWAY INTERACTIONS

We are so grateful when cast and crew members of national Broadway tours dedicate their time to interact with students and the community while in Bloomington. Last season, all five Broadway shows, including My Fair Lady, The Book of Mormon, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, and Annie, led engagement opportunities on campus. Activities included dance, vocal, and acting masterclasses with musical theatre and vocal students, a behind-the-scenes stagehand shadowing opportunity for students in production classes, and Q&A opportunities with cast members and crews with various departments.

Cast members from Fiddler on the Roof provide a masterclass for students from the theatre department.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER COMMUNITY INTERACTION On February 20, a jazz quintet from Bloomington North High School performed live at Poindexter Coffee inside the Graduate hotel for the public as well as for members of Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents. It was a wonderful opportunity for high school students to perform in front of some of the best jazz musicians in the world as well as the local community. Then members of Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents held a public Q&A where the students and those visiting the coffee shop were able to engage directly with the artists.

Students participated in an interactive workshop hosted by Soweto Gospel Choir.

BLACK VIOLIN OPEN SOUNDCHECK

On February 25, the Grammy-nominated duo Black Violin opened its soundcheck to young people of our community from Bloomington’s Bridges Musical Arts Youth Organization (Bridges MAYO) and the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington. After experiencing a behind-thescenes look at soundcheck, Black Violin answered questions from both groups, allowing for another amazing artist interaction for our community. The groups then were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Musical Arts Center before they enjoyed a pizza party in the lobby. The day concluded with groups receiving tickets to see Black Violin live on our stage thanks to support from our Circle of Friends.

BALLET HISPÁNICO STATEWIDE RESIDENCY

Ballet Hispánico led a weeklong residency February 27–March 3 consisting of 15 events over five days on three Indiana University campuses impacting nearly 1,700 participants. The five-day residency featured stops at IU Northwest, IUPUI, and IU Bloomington. The events included various dance workshops and masterclasses; a daytime performance for local middle school students; diálogos (moderated discussions) with topics of art, social justice, Latinx culture, and working in the performing arts; and a public postperformance Q&A. These events were both impactful and inspirational, and we are grateful to all the IU regional campuses and chancellors who supported this amazing week.

Ballet Hispánico taught eager students during a variety of dance workshops. 12

KIDS NIGHT ON BROADWAY

Our presentation of two nights of Annie was the backdrop for our annual Kids Night on Broadway event last April. Our Grand Foyer turned into New York City for an evening as the young guests received a passport book to stamp their way around five activity stations that were themed with the five NYC boroughs. Participants could visit the Manhattan station to create their own Annie locket, Brooklyn to decorate a Coney Island hot dog or pizza slice, Queens to create their own crown, the Bronx to grab a photo with Annie as the backdrop, and Staten Island to color their own “I LOVE NY” logo.

GIVE THE MAGIC

Our Give the Magic program is an annual opportunity to offer underserved community members the opportunity to attend a performance at IU Auditorium at no cost. Last season, nearly 350 community members from nine non-profit organizations were able to enjoy performances by Black Violin and Annie. This was all made possible thanks to the generosity of our partners at IU Health Riley Physicians and our Circle of Friends.

IU AUDITORIUM GIVES

Every year, IU Auditorium prioritizes finding ways to give back to the community. In 2022–2023, we once again partnered with Hoosier Hills Food Bank throughout the holiday season to collect food for local families in need. We also provided complimentary tickets through Vet Tix, a national ticketing organization that supplies tickets to our nation’s military members and retirees. And, as mentioned above, we were able to work with partners and donors to provide tickets to local agencies and youth organizations to experience the arts live in person.

Emanuel Ax leads a masterclass with students and faculty on the Auditorium stage.

EMANUEL AX IMMERSIVE CAREER TALK AND MASTERCLASS Grammy Award-winning classical pianist Emanuel Ax was gracious enough with his time to spend an evening on our stage with students from the Jacobs School of Music and O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs for a career talk and piano masterclass. The evening began with a moderated discussion on Ax’s career before he took questions from the students. Then, three piano students from the Jacobs School of Music were given the opportunity to perform pieces for Ax and get direct feedback from him as they played. The attendees were able to immerse themselves into these opportunities with one of the world’s best pianists.

IN D I A NA UNIV E RSI TY COM MU NI TY At IU Auditorium, we take great pride in our commitment to serving the university community. Our dedication is evident in our collaborations with various IU organizations to ensure flawless event execution, our provision of staff and ticketing services, and our willingness to open our facility for rehearsals and class tours. Our ongoing goal is to be a valuable resource for the IU community. In 2022–2023, we partnered with IU regional campuses across the state for residency with world-renowned dance company Ballet Hispánico which culminated in 15 events over five days on three Indiana University campuses. We again worked alongside the African American Arts institute to present Potpourri of the Arts, an annual event featuring Black music, dance, and culture. We worked with Union Board to present up-andcoming singer/songwriter Noah Kahan and A Conversation with Pitbull. Furthermore, we provided staff for IU Arts and Humanities Council events such as First Thursdays and Granfalloon Festival. Our box office continued to support ticketing needs across campus, including ticketing for IU Cinema, IU Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance events, and Union Board, as well as partnering with regional IU campuses on various events.

COMMENCEMENT

In May, we were honored to host 13 recognition ceremonies for the class of 2023 for various schools and departments. There were 3,195 graduates recognized at those ceremonies, and we welcomed over 16,000 guests through our doors.

IU AUDITORIUM STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

In addition to offering students opportunities for hands-on venue management experience, we also provide academic scholarships to qualified students each year. The IU Auditorium Student Scholarship honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director, Winston Shindell. A fierce advocate for students, Shindell created a professional environment that enabled students to gain practical knowledge by working directly with IU Auditorium staff. Congratulations to our 2022–2023 recipients, each a sterling example of the students IU Auditorium has had the honor of working with: Nathan Brown Renee Carter Mary Higdon Emma Salzmann

IU AUDITORIUM +1 SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 2014, the IU Auditorium Alumni Association (IUAAA) celebrates a shared connection between Hoosiers of all ages, formed through participation with IU Auditorium as student managers, ushers, box office clerks, interns, and graduate assistants, as well as many other roles. The IUAAA works to pay forward all that these alumni experienced as students working at IU Auditorium through the formation of the +1 Scholarship. The +1 Scholarship was created in honor of IU Auditorium Executive Director, Doug Booher, and his +1 customer service philosophy. This year’s +1 scholarship was awarded at our 2023 spring student end-ofyear banquet to Ashlea Eversole who exemplified the extraordinary customer service efforts that keep the Auditorium held in such high regard.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

During June and July, we were honored to again welcome new IU students through our doors as their first stop for New Student Orientation. In partnership with the Office of First Year Experiences here at IU, we take great pride in being part of the welcoming of new students and parents each year.

IU Auditorium student employees celebrate at annual spring banquet.

VENUE MAN AG E ME N T Beyond IU Auditorium, our staff also manages events at other campus venues, including Presidents Hall and Woodburn Hall.

PRESIDENTS HALL

Located inside historic Franklin Hall, Presidents Hall regularly serves as an event space for weddings, ceremonies, guests lectures, and other university events. In 2022–2023, the year was highlighted by the Mellenamp Symposium which was a one-of-a-kind gathering, bringing academic scholars, music industry insiders, journalists, and more for a deep dive into the cultural and social impact of John Mellencamp’s music and art. Mellencamp was part of the event with a live interview and discussion. Other events included Kinsey Institute’s 75th Anniversary Symposium, Poynter Center’s Linda Greenhouse Lecture, and an ASL Retreat.

WOODBURN HALL

Events held at Woodburn Hall in 2022–2023 included a Latin American music experience for students from Washington Community Schools in Washington, Indiana, led by the Jacobs School of Music Latin American Music Center, A Conversation with Glen S. Miranker, and IU’s Political Science graduation celebration.

IN TE R N AT I ON AL THES P I A N S FESTI VA L R E TU R N S For a second straight year, the International Thespian Festival returned to the Indiana University Bloomington campus in June 2023. This summer’s weeklong event saw participation grow to nearly 3,500 high school theatre students and teachers, nearly 1,000 more than in 2022. Live performances and workshops took place throughout the week at IU Auditorium, the Musical Arts Center, and other campus venues and classroom spaces.

A BAN NE R YEAR OV ERAL L S E ASO N R ECO R DS

The 2022–2023 year was one for the record book at IU Auditorium. We set a new year-long box office record with $3,234,732.86 in gross ticket sales for all shows that played in our theatre. We also set a three showspecific record with The Book of Mormon and John Mellencamp.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Mellencamp kicked off his Live and In Person national tour with two recordbreaking hometown performances on our stage last February. The two sold-out shows set new IU Auditorium box office records for both a single event and a two-night concert event. The Indiana native rocked audiences both nights with classic hits and new favorites from his extensive Grammy Award-winning catalog. Prior to the performances, Mellencamp and his band prepared for the 76-night tour with four days of technical rehearsals and an invite-only dress rehearsal on our stage with the help of our stage team. It was a week to remember for his fans and our staff.

We were delighted to once again host the hilarious touring production of The Book of Mormon in January for three performances. The engagement set a new IU Auditorium box office record for a three-performance event with gross ticket sales totaling $431,039. This is one of two IU Auditorium box office records held by The Book of Mormon as the production also set a high mark for an eight-performance event in October 2019.
