You’re Invited! Transfer Student Orientation
About your program ll Sessions. The Transfer NSO program has both required and “conference style” sessions, allowing you to tailor much of your program to best meet your needs. Included will be sessions about academic and career planning, IU Bloomington resources and services, Bloomington, ways to get involved, and more. Then you will meet with an academic advisor to plan your course schedule and register for classes. ll Placement Exams. IU Bloomington requires that most transfer students take a math placement exam and a foreign language placement exam. Both are offered online and must be taken prior to your NSO program. Your confirmation will provide details, a link, and any exemption options. ll Travel. You can start making your travel plans as soon as you have your NSO email confirmation. Prior to your program date, and after May 20, we’ll mail you a preparation packet with final information and your NSO parking permit. ll Schedule. Your day begins early. You may opt to stay on campus or in one of our partner hotels the night before. Information will be provided in your confirmation.

What to expect New Student Orientation (NSO) for transfer students is a required one-day program where you will meet with an academic advisor and register for your first semester courses. (Note: students transferring directly into the Jacobs School of Music will attend a two-day NSO program with other freshmen and transfer students.) NSO will help you become more familiar with the IU Bloomington campus, services, processes, and opportunities. Make your reservation now for the most date options.
We urge you to attend NSO during June or July. It’s the best way to register for classes and prepare for your first year at IU. If you can’t come in the summer, you will attend the late August program, just prior to Welcome Week. Look for more information at fye.indiana.edu.

Your to-do list New Student Orientation is just one of the things you need to get ready for the transition to IU Bloomington. We can help you organize the rest, including applying for housing and financial aid, setting up your IU email, completing forms, and exploring online resources. Keep your to-do list updated on your FY(Me) page. Be sure to check your IU email often—many offices will send important information to that address.
Program for guests Parents and family members are an important part of your IU experience and we offer sessions just for them during your NSO program. Some sessions you can even attend together. They’ll get tips for helping you make the transition to IU Bloomington and learn about the resources, programs, and support in place for your success.
