What’s Inside This Packet? • Parking permit. Please cut out the parking permit in this packet and place it on the front dashboard of your vehicle when you arrive at orientation. It will be valid for two days before and two days after your New Student Orientation program. Vehicles without this permit will be ticketed. •
Immunization and health history information. Review the letters from the IU Health Center and take action as instructed.
Orientation Events Throughout New Student Orientation, you and your parents will have separate sessions. Bringing young children is not recommended, as the program is designed for adults.
Check-in and Schedule Check-in at Wright Residence Center is at 8 a.m. Final sessions conclude in the morning. The afternoon is personalized for students; you will be finished by 6 p.m. Parents will have free time in the afternoon while students complete individual advising and registration.
Lunch We will provide lunch for students and registered guests during the program. You’ll want to have breakfast prior to the program and may choose to bring money for snacks.
Students or Parents with Disabilities If you or your parents require specific accommodations or have mobility limitations, you must contact the Office of First Year Experience Programs at fye@indiana.edu or (812) 855-4357 well in advance of the New Student Orientation program so that we can provide you with information on the services available. You may want to bring along a family member or friend for additional help, as we do not have staff assistants for this purpose. Getting to IU Bloomington Bloomington is located one hour south of Indianapolis. Wright Residence Center is located at the corner of Tenth Street and Jordan Avenue on the IU campus. Additional directions and information about shuttle services from the Indianapolis International Airport are available at fye.indiana.edu. The street address for Wright Residence Center is 501 N. Jordan Avenue, Bloomington, IN 47406-7504. Note: There will be road construction in and around the IU Bloomington campus this summer. Please allow plenty of time for travel.
Parking on Campus Be sure to cut out this parking permit. The primary lots for parking during New Student Orientation are designated in black on the map provided in this booklet; signs will guide you once you are on campus. Your parking permit serves as a free pass to any campus parking garage. Meters are not free, even with the permit. You may park in any space designated as A, C, D, or E, with the exception of 24-hour D-2 zones, reserved spaces, or “No Parking” areas. Parking in IU accessible spaces requires the appropriate IU permit. Vehicles not parked in appropriate areas or without this permit will be ticketed.
Overnight Accommodations Student Housing
If you need to arrive the evening prior to your New Student Orientation, we encourage you to stay on campus. You will be housed in Wright Residence Center with other new students. Orientation Leaders will be available to answer questions and will plan social events during the evening. No prior housing reservations are required. • The fee is $35 per night. This fee includes tax and will be billed to your IU bursar account. • Rooms are double occupancy, and roommate assignments will be made when you sign in. • The common areas in Wright are air-conditioned, but the individual rooms are not. Rooms are equipped with window fans. • You will be provided with a pillow, sheets, and a towel. Bedspreads will be available upon request. Please bring your own toiletries and an alarm clock. NOTE: Phones will not be provided in residence center rooms. • A list of housing rules and guidelines, including policies prohibiting drug and alcohol use, will be provided when you sign in for housing. Students who disregard the rules may be sent home and will not be permitted to register for classes during New Student Orientation.
Parent Housing
There are several lodging options available to parents and family members.
Willkie Residence Center
Parents who choose to stay on campus will be housed in Willkie Residence Center, located at 150 N. Rose Avenue, at the intersection with Seventh Street. No prior housing reservations are required. Students are not permitted to stay in Willkie. • The fee is $48.40 plus tax for one to two people per night. • Parents can sign up to stay at Willkie between 8 a.m. and midnight. • All rooms are air-conditioned. Rooms are single occupancy and share a full bath with one other room. Rooms do not have televisions or alarm clocks. • Parents will be provided with a pillow, sheets, and a towel, but they should bring all toiletries. Bedspreads are available upon request.
Indiana Memorial Union Biddle Hotel and Conference Center and Local Hotels
The Indiana Memorial Union is in the heart of the IU Bloomington campus and is home to the 189-room, full-service Biddle Hotel and Conference Center. Call (800) 209-8145 for reservations. Bloomington also has a wide variety of hotels, motels, and inns. The Bloomington/Monroe County Convention & Visitors Bureau has a listing of hotels. Don’t Get a Ticket! Place this parking permit with the other side facing up on your vehicle’s dashboard. Valid only while you are on campus for your assigned orientation session.
Placement Exams Mathematics Skills Assessment (MSA) You need to plan to take the MSA unless you have IU Bloomington credit in MATH-M 211 OR both MATH-M 118 AND MATH-M 119. Visit onestart.iu.edu to view your “Transfer Credit Report” if you’re unsure. You do not need to arrive early for this exam.
Optional Exams: Foreign Language, Biology, and Calculus These exams may provide advanced placement or IU Bloomington credit. You may opt to take any of these exams the evening before your program (6:30 p.m., Wright Residence Center) or during Welcome Week in August. You may also choose to take one of these during your orientation day, but you will miss other scheduled sessions. See your email confirmation for more details. Foreign language exams offered in the summer are French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.
Optional Online Chemistry Placement Exam Science majors intending to take chemistry at IU Bloomington should plan to take the Online Chemistry Placement Exam before June 1, 2011. Information and a link to the exam site can be found at www.indiana.edu/~fye/students/cpe.html.
New Student Orientation Fees Student Fee The student fee is $125. This fee helps cover all orientation costs, including testing, staffing, publications, your CampusAccess Card (student ID), all program materials, and lunch. It also covers programming throughout Welcome Week and your first year at IU. The fee will be on your first tuition bill from the Office of the Bursar.
Parent/Family Fee The parent fee is $20 for one person and $10 for each additional person and includes one set of materials per family. You may authorize parent fees to be included on your first tuition bill.

Orientation Checklist Receive and review this Confirmation Packet. Make your travel arrangements. Visit fye.indiana.edu and www.indiana.edu/~bypass for more travel information, including updates about road construction in and around Bloomington. Prepare for your academic advising appointment. Follow the instructions on University Division’s website: ud.iub.edu/fs.php. Be sure to follow the instructions included in the immunization and health history information.

General Parking
What Should You Bring? Your 10-digit university ID number and your username and passphrase for your IU computing account. All materials from this packet, including your parking permit. The permit must be displayed on your dashboard. A copy of your transfer credit report. Comfortable clothes, shoes for walking, and an umbrella. A photo ID. You will not receive your CampusAccess Card (student ID) without photo identification.
Make your lodging arrangements. Participants staying on campus do not need to make prior reservations.
A canned food item to donate to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Last year students donated almost two tons of food to the local community.
Pay overdue balances from any IU campus at least 24 hours before coming to New Student Orientation. Your IU billing accounts must be current in order to register for classes.
Help FYE support campus sustainability initiatives. Bring a reusable water bottle. We will provide locations where you will be able to fill it up.
Bring your 10-digit university ID number with you. Log into FY(Me) at fye.indiana.edu where you can find this number in the “My Profile” section. Make sure your computer accounts are fully set up at itaccounts.iu.edu, following the instructions provided. Visit FY(Me) for updates and additional information.
