The Armory Art Center Converting the Amory into an art center was not a preconceived idea; in fact, it was through a series of research and understanding the concept “Hold” which prompted me to consider an art center will be ideal for this building. When I was conducting a case study on Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, I found out they offer an extensive art programs from painting classes to Flamenco classes, and all sorts of percussion or sculpting classes. They also provide a gallery for curating student’s art works and a performing space for dance and music class students. The art programs and event spaces for the Mission Armory is mostly inspired by Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.

PROJECT OVERVIEW During the design development, a major alteration of the interior space was destined to happen when I’ve decided to open an atrium in the middle of the building; this is a more literal realization of the concept “Hold” where the emphasis is on opening the building to the outside world. However, the façade of the building cannot be altered, so the void is going in a vertical manner instead of horizontal. Another thought that went into this atrium opening is to create visual connections between spaces. For instance, when people lounge around the middle of the gallery which is opened to the main atrium, they can look up and see all the classrooms, especially when all the art works displayed in the gallery are done by the students from upstairs, it creates an interesting bond where people see the product, and also get to see how it’s being made.

PERFORMING SPACE / MURAL EXHIBITION There are two mural exhibition / performing spaces which has versatile functionalities, on one hand, it is a space showcasing mural art works done by local muralists and students from Mission Armory, on the other, and it functions as a stage for music or dance performances. One interesting feature of the space is the retractable bench seating which it can be retracted into the floor, and be extruded out when needed. Since it is an opening to the gallery space on the second floor, it provides the visitors another perspective in viewing the mural or performances.
MULTI-FUNCTION COURT The multi-functional court is a 39,000 square feet of space which used to be a drill training facility for the National Guards and artillery troops. Now it will be re-purposed as a large event space for large art exhibition, theater plays or community events. As seen in the rendering, there are numbers of openings from three sides of the wall, and one opening on top of the roof, they allow the natural light come into the space during day time. exhibition 7

ART CLASSES The painting and sculpture class rooms are laid out in a similar configuration. The class rooms are divided into two classes; one with regular class seating’s and working tables, the other class is dedicated to figure drawing or sculpturing purposes where a pedestal is placed in the middle of class in order to place models or object , and easels or sculpting stations will surround the pedestal. The light beam on the ceiling goes along with the shape of the glass wall which is inspired by the curve shapes of wire fence patterns. exhibition 9
MUSIC CLASSES The music classrooms is a completely different approach from other classrooms since music class requires better acoustic control. So I came up with this idea of making class rooms into booths and group them together based on two types of class, percussion and string instruments. There are total 12 booths, and they are grouped in two parts in the middle of main class space, and the rest of the space automatically becomes corridor spaces. exhibition 10
THE ATRIUM Fourth floor is the top level of the building, and it is a 3rd floor plate for class room
floor dedicated to both dance and music classrooms. As mentioned, both third and fourth floor shares the same floor plan configurations. The spaces close to the Drill Court are offices, restroom, rehearsal rooms for the music class, and storage and shower/locker rooms for the dance class. The most dominant feature of fourth floor is the round opening of the roof top,

which I can proudly say it is a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum. However, I based the pattern on the wire fence as I proposed in my concept development, but roof opening is a homage to one of the greatest architect in the 20th century.

PROJECT OVERVIEW This was a one of the most interesting project in the Spatial design class, we were each assigned a specific celebrity chef, and we had to customize a restaurant for that specific chef. Mario Batali was my chef, and through a belief research, I found out he specialized in Italian food, and needless to say, he is also an expert inmain wine.floor plan staff toilet

MAIN FLOOR DINING / WINE BAR So the idea behind the main dining area is to depicting a vineyard within a winery, with pendants hanging down from the wooden studs creating a more semi-private dining experience. The wine bar provides a wide selections of wines for customers who are either waiting for the table or just simple want to try out some different wines. Hans Wagner’s elbow chair is used as the main dining chair throughout the entire restaurant, and I used Hee Welling’s famous AAS 32 for wine bar stools. commercial
16
UPPER FLOOR DINING Upper floor dining area is connected through an abstracted barrel spiral stair case, and similar to the main dining area, the winery ambient can also be experienced on this level. There are 8 banquet seating and two sets of group dining tables. Toward the west side of the upper floor, there is a private dining area in which a retractable partition can enclose the space. Tom Dixon’s Beat light pendants are used for the banquet dining area.

FRAME HOTEL Frame boutique hotel is located in San Francisco at the corner of Mission and 3rd Street. Due to the amount of international conventions and exhibitions held in Moscone Center, and the amount of tourists coming in to the city every day, the demand for hotels is unquestionably substantial. Since the location of this project is close to some of the most famous museums and art centers, I’ve decided to design this hotel with more emphasis on the context of the location.

An Eichler Home I remember one of the first assignments I had in school is to sketch an Eichler home, for which I really fell in love with this post-beam structure due to its simplicity and open floor plan, and of course, I always want my house to have a court yard. This project is an example of exploring the classic Californian house.
