Preliminary Plan of Action The Future of the Americas Region 1. Strategic Plan, Looking For Future Goals: In order to set a plan for the future that can put our Region in the top of professionalism and work in a strategic way to achieve our goals, a strategic plan is more than needed today in the Americas Region. With all the development we are having in different areas we need to grow but in an organized way, so we can achieve more goals. Working as NMO president and Regional Teams’ member for 2 terms has given me a lot of experience related to the needs of the Federation and the NMOs. We will therefore base work for the implementation of the Strategic Plan of the Americas Region in the most important pillars according to the presidents’ vision which are: Capacity Building Opportunities, External representation, Involvement and Internal Development. Once we set the first basis for this strategy that will be hopefully be ready by the AM of this term (2017), we will focus on different ways to evaluate all the aspects we have already agreed to work on during the Presidents’ Session in the Regional Meeting, making sure we can set indicators to assess the impact that the Strategy has regionally but also nationally. We will also need to make sure this implementation will be beneficial for all the members. This plan and indicators will be followed up on by me, the Regional Director, and the Americas Team, and will be reported on to the presidents periodically. 2. Organizational Development for NMOs: There is no way to have a good development as a Region if we do not help our NMOs to develop themselves. That is why I am planning to also assess the possibility of implementing an organizational development seminar for the NMO presidents, and also take this topic as one of the most important ones during the Regional Meeting in Paraguay. My vision here would be to help NMOs gain enough knowledge about organizational development that they could start working on their own national strategic plans in order to achieve long term goals, and also gain benefits as NGOs from them. For this seminar we will work together with the Regional Team, the VPCB, and we will also include alumni if possible. Additionally, we will try to find experienced people in the NMOs or among our external partners that could work with us at the national level with their presence during the NGAs, SRTs, TOMs or any other relevant national events in which NMOs would like to receive support.

Building a better Americas Region 1. Internal Development and Involvement: As Region we have a lot of similarities that we need to start using to potentiate our activities internally and externally. Being part of the Americas also helps us to better understand our needs as NMOs and as a Region to work together to achieve goals on both levels. Assessment: we need to start the term with a proper assessment of the Regional needs of our NMOs, as Regional Director, I will take the lead in the Regional Team in order to evaluate the results of the previous term and work on a new assessment based on the uncompleted tasks and the new needs of the NMOs. This assessment will be used to create Capacity Building opportunities to support our members and NMOs during the whole term and also to set the top priorities for the RM’s Sessions. Finances: We all know finances are a key point to develop our NMOs and attend international meetings (prioritizing GAs and the RM) were the organizations have the opportunity to raise their voices and also vote for the important decisions that the Federation will take for the future. That is why I believe we will give special attention to financial sustainability and strategies during the Regional Meeting and Regional Sessions. On the other hand I will make sure to work with the assistants to follow up closely on the applications from our NMOs to TAF for GAs and RMs as well as promoting other opportunities such as the Erik Holst fund. Finally, during this term I am planning to work closely with the LOs/VPF and DAs in order to find grant opportunities that we could use to improve the development of our activities and projects. NMO – NMO collaboration: Our NMOs have different strengths, and in some cases these strengths are areas where some other NMOs are struggling and would like to receive guidance and support to improve their weaknesses. To this end, I would like to implement a system focused on Regional Team help to all the NMOs but also take advantage of the diversity in the Region, creating a Regional NMO buddy system that could serve not just for support in the GAs but also during the whole term. IOGs: We will keep working on the implementation of our IOGs and working with them to establish more specific tasks for the Regional Team members in the term, but also during the Regional Meeting. NMO Recruitment: Another way to improve that work that we perform in the Region is identifying and creating opportunities for more medical students. I will make sure to work with the DAs to recruit and involve more countries in the Federation when they are ready and strong enough to join. We will assist them in the application process and in their first steps if they are accepted. We currently have established communication with: Suriname, Barbados and Cuba which will probably join the Federation during next term, but there are more opportunities, such as with Belize, Bahamas, St Kitts and Nevis, among others. As a plus, depending on the regulations of the Federation, we will also explore the possibility to work with territories such as Puerto Rico, Aruba, Curacao, etc.

2. Capacity Building: This is one of the key points we need to develop in all the focus areas we will work in during the next term, since it is important to develop new skills for our members to achieve goals in a more efficient way to do that I plan to work on the following ideas: Capacity Building Opportunities: I plan to work closely to the CB RA to use our regional assessment in order to improve and promote the implementation of training sessions/workshops related to the needs of the NMOs (focusing on the hosting NMO and the ones around it). Since our amount of SRTs in the Region was tremendously improved during the current term, we will continue assisting and guiding our NMOs in the CB events application process. CB for everybody: In the Region not everyone is able to pay to attend the SRTs or CB opportunities, and since they are not present in all the countries, I will encourage the production of materials for online training sessions/workshops. Together with the VPCB and the RT we will promote webinars, online training sessions/workshops and the production of different tools such as manuals, toolkits and handbooks.
Regional Team and the Regional Meeting,, family and platform for everyone Both are important assets in the development of the Region, NMOs and Standing Committees. This is why I plan to follow up all the processes related with them closely: 1. Regional Team: In order to have a good term, it all has to start with one of the first steps to work: having a strong team. In this sense, I will be very involved in the elections of the Regional Team, from the Standing Committee Regional Assistants and also Development assistants, working together with the TO and the other Regional Directors to see how NMO presidents can be involved in the process. After the discussions about the IT structure (I am also member of the current TF) we will see the implementation of new strategies that the Federation will adopt in order to improve the involvement of the NMO presidents and members, and I will follow up with them closely. We will continue following up on the achievements we reach based on the goals established for the term. 2. Regional Meeting: As the main platform for Regional development I am currently working to support the Regional Team as much as possible in all the preparations for our Regional Meeting in Asuncion, Paraguay. I will also make sure we follow up on the timeline we agreed to use, and very close, since I will attend their national NGA in September, I will make sure everything is going smoothly and help them with any need. An important part of it is the Regional Meeting itself, so I am going to supervise the work of the Regional Team and the people involved in facilitating session to make sure we will provide high quality sessions for all the attendees and set a follow up plan for the outcomes we will get out of the meeting.

Let The World Know Our Stances The best way to achieve this important pillar for the Region and the IFMSA is spreading our values stated in our Policy Documents and soon in our Regional External Representation Priorities, through external representation. 3. External Representation: During the current term the Region has developed a lot in terms of external representation but there is still big room of improvement in this field. Regional Internships: As a Region, we know it is difficult for us to attend or apply for the internship opportunities that the Federation offers, since most of them are outside the continent. That is why I want to work hard in this field in order to open more opportunities for our members in our home: The Americas Region. I plan to look for these internships in institutions such as PAHO, UNICEF, PAFAMS among others. Stakeholder mapping and Regional MoUs: To have a meaningful participation in external representation we need to identify partners that could collaborate with us at the Regional and national levels. These external organizations should be focus on health and share visions and priorities we share at IFMSA and as a Region, but also we can take a look outside the medical field in order to promote multisectoral collaboration and help the development of policies and positions from different perspectives. In order to improve the institutional memory and achieve long term goals with Regional Organizations, we also need to promote formal collaborations at the Regional level, as we did with FELSOCEM and we have a process with UNASUR. There is a big room for improvement in terms of partnerships in the Region with organizations such as UNICEF, IPSF, IADS, CONFEMEL, PAFAMS, ALAMES and a lot more. Working Regionally towards the NMOs: One of the main goals of working in external representation is to give benefits to our NMOs. That is why I would like to keep the communication and promotion of national work between our national organizations and the national headquarters of PAHO. In collaboration with the LOSO, I will also promote the collaboration between our NMOs and other Students’ Organizations, looking for an integrated work to achieve better outcomes. I will also work on the promotion of national MoUs between NMOs and other national organizations in order to implement external representation internally but also to improve/broaden institutional memory.

Increasing NMO involvement in Policy Documents: For NMOs interested in increasing their involvement in Policy Documents I will work with the LOs and DAs to promote opportunities but also to make clear during sessions/webinars/training sessions the importance of their involvement. Also, it is going to be important to build capacity around these kinds of topics, so the NMOs will be able not just to participate at the international level but also to create their own ones at the national level based on their needs and priorities. External Representation and Policy Making Assistant: This is a strategic position in the current Regional Team that I would like to hold and keep working with her/him in Capacity Building for external representation for the NMO Presidents and VPEs. I would also like the Assistant to aid me to look for partners and external events where we can advocate for our priorities as a Region.
