INVITATION LETTER FROM THE IFMSA PRESIDENT Dear IFMSA members from the Americas,

It is truly my honor to be writing you these few words, in order to welcome you to our Americas Regional Meeting in Peru.

IFMSA has inspired medical students from around the world for now over 65 years. The Federation offered them the opportunity to grow as future health leaders and advocates. It builded their capacity, made them embrace other cultures and united them for Global Health.

Today, we are gathering once again our medical students from the Americas in the beautiful city of Lima. One strong recommendation I would give you is to enjoy every single moment of it. This is a unique opportunity to meet future health professionals from different countries, discuss with them inspiring topics and get inspired from their activities and projects.

I will unfortunately not be with you this time in Peru, but I have attended two Americas Regional Meetings in the past (Panama 2014 and Uruguay 2016) and I can say these two have been the most intense IFMSA meetings I ever attended. The enthusiasm, motivation and kindness of the participants make me really regret not being with you this time.

I wish you all the best for the Regional Meeting, with great outcomes and productive sessions. And I really hope to have the chance to meet you somewhere else in the world.

Best, Omar Cherkaoui IFMSA President 2016/2017

INVITATION LETTER FROM THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR

Dear Americas Family, It is amazing for me to have the opportunity to invite you all to our Regional Meeting, the main and most important event of our awesome region of the Americas. As I said In my motivation letter when I apply to be your Regional Director, I joined IFMSA convinced by a group of not conventional medical students that, in their words, they can change the world, a while have been passed since that moment and, now I can proudly say that I’m here, and as you I became part of this amazing group of people who are passionate for the federation. During this journey one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever seen is how motivated and full of background is our federation, but it is always excited to for me to see the fire in the eyes of the members of the Americas region, those people ready to speak up on behalf our thoughts and to also learn a lot during the process, that’s why Americas means so much for me. As region I believe we still have a lot of barriers to face and important topics to discuss, but the most important thing is to keep working on increasing our commitment, friend and work bonds and last but not least our motivation to keep working for this region that totally deserves it. Our Regional Meeting will be the instance to gather, meet and share around our great passion, for our region and for the IFMSA, learn as much as possible and go back to our countries and NMOs to with all this new information and knowledge to improve the process of capacity building Therefore, I invite you to enjoy every second of the Regional Meeting, a meeting prepared with so much love and passion by the Organizing Committee and the Regional team with the help of the TO I can’t wait to meet you all in Lima! On behalf of the Americas Team, Fabrizzio Canaval Americas Regional Director 2016/17

ABOUT PERÚ Every place on Earth is fascinating and unique, but Peru is one of those countries that manage to stand above the crowd. This place has so many natural and cultural treasures that have fascinated people for hundreds of years, and still fascinates them today. Peru is located on the west coast of South America, it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and its lands are full of so many natural and cultural treasures. Peru is well known for being an extremely biodiverse country, with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of and geographical territory, create many different and ideal ecosystems, now, home of a great variety of flora and fauna. Throughout its history, Peru has been the meeting ground for different nations and cultures; it is a nation of mixed ethnic origins, full of mysticism, adventure and thousands of stories, myths and legends. Although the Inca’s Machu Picchu is the most famous archeological site in the country, it is just the tip of the iceberg. Peru had many fascinating diverse cultures and remains untouched by time.

LEAD: Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy & Development Coordinator: Ivan Fabrizzio Canaval DĂaz, Regional Director for the Americas (rdamericas@ifmsa.org), Diego Mendoza, IFMSA Supervising Council. LEAD is an innovative 3 day workshop directed to IFMSA national and regional leaders. It is based on working on 4 main streams of skills (Leadership skills, Empowerment of members, Advocacy and Development of LCs & NMOs) in order to improve the capacity of those members in leading their local committees and NMOs. A similar workshop was successfully implemented at the RM2016, and in a regional SRT providing our LEADers, the information and capacity building they need to lead the region and IFMSA we want Training Old Trainers (TOT) Coordinators:

Andrej

Vujkovac,

IFMSA

Vice-President

for

Capacity

Building

(vpcb@ifmsa.org), Frida VizcaĂno, Capacity Building RA for the Americas 2016/17 (ra.cb.americas@ifmsa.org), Francisco Parra, Capacity Building RA for the Americas 2015/16 From an objective point of view, a person who has already undergone TNT, a trainer, can develop his or her training capacity through two different ways. The first one can be done with his peers (other trainers which have undergone different training experiences) or by involving an external: a training company or a professional trainer. On the other hand, a trainers can expand their horizons by organising new Capacity Building interventions on their own. The TOT will aid the trainers to identify the need for these events and equip them with the tools to conduct them. Through learning a mix of hard and soft skills, the trainers will grow further and at the same time amplify the potential of their own capacities. Training Medical Education Training (TMET) Coordinators: Pablo Estrella, SCOME RA for the Americas (ra.scome.americas@ifmsa.org), Alexander Lachapelle, Liaison Officer for Medical education issues (lme@ifmsa.org), Ximena Paredes, TMET Trainer and Victor Garcia, TMET Trainer.

Medical Education has been always a really important topic regarding IFMSA. With TMET trainings, a whole new window was opened for providing medical students with tools for getting actively involved into their medical education process. Before we can lobby for higher standards and change in our Education, we should be aware of different topics such as curriculum design and development, assessment, research, learning methods and some others. That is why a TMET training is such an important tool for educating and preparing medical students to have a more critical thinking and evidence based decision making regarding these topics. In the 3 days workshop in the Pre-RM, students will be able to become leaders of the topic, and join the Medical Education Trainers around the world, for creating local, national and international initiatives for changing our Medical Health System and Medical Education worldwide. Global Health Within Exchanges Coordinators: Mauro Camacho, SCORE Director (scored@ifmsa.org), Andrea FalconĂ, SCOPE RA for the Americas (ra.scope.americas@ifmsa.org) Again, SCOPE and SCORE joined forces once more to bring a workshop related to the workflow in our Standing Committees as well as to train new members. Throughout the past terms, SCOPE & SCORE Regional Assistants have had the same feeling: A need for a training exchanges for the Pre-Regional Meeting. The exchange is our major tool to get medical students involved in global health topics, to change their view on health care, and to broaden their horizons. To have this wonderful worldwide project happen, it needs a big amount of dedicated volunteers and professional skills of organization. Having this workshop for the preRM provides us with the unique opportunity to improve the on Exchanges in the region is becoming more and more important and urgent. We, as SCOPE and SCORE Directors focusing this year on Capacity Building and Academic Quality, would like to reach exchange officers at the local level, propose them this training to improve their capacity of handling a perfect exchange program, with a real focus on the academic quality of it.

It has also always been our vision to have a high quality exchanges program by improving both the quality and the usage of the Academic Quality that we have implemented in our program for quite a long time, but still, there is a lack of improvement. Another thing is to integrate the exchange program with global health by bringing the issues of exchanges as global health opportunities that will be offered to all medical students since promoting global health education is part of the IFMSA and SCOPE/SCORE core activities. All of these issues can be included in one topic/project that can be implemented to every NMOs before the departure of the students in order for them to have the proper knowledge and preparation within these areas, which is the Pre- Departure Training/Pre-Exchange Training. Therefore, we would like to raise the PDT/PET itself during the preRM. Another content of the preRM Exchanges will be-as far as possible regarding the participants-to strengthen specifically new NMOs. Women’s Reproductive Health & Safe Abortion Workshop Coordinators: Carlos Acosta, SCORA Director (scorad@ifmsa.org), Jenna Webber, SCORA RA for the Americas (ra.scora.americas@ifmsa.org) This workshop is part of the IFMSA and Ipas strategy on women’s and adolescents’ reproductive health and safe abortion, a collective effort from both organizations that aims to increase IFMSA members' awareness of, experiences with and ability to effectively advocate for women and adolescent’s reproductive health, especially safe abortion. The focus of this workshop is to advance the development of a network of safe abortion advocates within the federation. The training covers several related topics; for example: human, sexual and reproductive rights; abortion laws and policies; barriers to access care, including stigma; safe abortion methods; and identification and referral of women with abortion-related complications. The curriculum also includes information and activities on values clarification for abortion attitude transformation, as well as youth participation and leadership. Participants will be expected to lead sessions from the curriculum and to take an active role in material delivery, additionally they will receive training on basic principles of training, peer education and adult learning.

Public Health Leadership Training (PHLT) Coordinators: Eleonora Frau, SCOPH Director (scophd@ifmsa.org), MarĂa Peniche, SCOPH RA for the Americas (ra.scoph.americas@ifmsa.org) The Public Health Leadership Training (PHLT) is imagined as a longitudinal concept of training IFMSAians to take up leadership positions in their NMOs, countries, regions and on the international level. We as medical students represent current and future health leaders and as such we represent a perfect fertile field to grow future competent leaders that will involve themselves in finding solutions to Public Health issues, both in their studies, but also later in life. To initiate the change we must be equipped with the right tools and knowledge to successfully lead our fellow medical students, our communities and the general population. As said many times in IFMSA, medical students have to have active participation in finding solutions for the world. However to do so they have to be equipped with right leadership skills to participate in the solution finding. Unfortunately, this is rarely taught in medical schools and as such it is our responsibility to bring issues we face in Public Health to our fellow medical students and equip them with the right tools to tackle them. This workshop completely follows the vision of the IFMSA, aiming to develop leadership skills and to train SCOPHians and others to actively take leadership roles within the field of Public Health. Moreover, it will train participants in specific fields related to IFMSA and Public Health, such as theory on subjects such as Climate Change and Health, as well as Primary Healthcare, and on how to enroll activities in programs and how to create activities to be in line with programs which present focal points of the Federation.

REGIONAL MEETING AGENDA

CHECK IN: During check in process, the Organizing Committee (OC) will check if everything is correct with the payments and the registration. No delegate will be able to check in if finances are not solved with the OC Treasurer. The room keys and name badges will be given during this process. What not to forget: Your identification will be required during this process. To make everything faster and easier for the delegates and the OC, we recommend having a “head of delegation” that will collect all IDs and distribute the keys and badges to the delegations. Opening Ceremony: The Opening Ceremony will be held in the Carrera Hotel and it will mark the start of our Regional Meeting. Dress code: formal. What not to forget: Remember to bring your National or National Member Organization flag to take awesome pictures and long lasting memories with other delegations and delegates. Transportation to venue: Most of the activities will happen in the UPCH (Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia), which is approximately 20 minutes away from the Carrera hotel. The OC will provide transportation daily. What not to forget: The sessions must start on time, so we ask all the delegates to be punctual. We recommend delegations to find a way to make sure everyone is ready for the sessions. If you are late, chances are that you will receive a funny punishment. SC/Presidents’ sessions: This sessions will be held in the venue, the UPCH. If you are not sure what sessions to attend, make sure to discuss it with your delegation beforehand. We do recommend you to stay in the same sessions during the Regional Meeting, since several sessions are divided into different days. What not to forget: There will be 6 parallel sessions during this time: Presidents’ sessions and the ones for each Standing Committee (SCOPH, SCORA, SCOME, SCORP and

SCOPE/SCORE). If you are not sure about which sessions you want to attend, you can take a look to their agendas and see what option you like the most. Americas Team meeting/NMO hour: The agenda provides this space for all delegations to gather and discuss the daily activities. We recommend you to use this time to discuss your sessions, plan the daily events ahead and divide tasks within your delegations. The Americas team also meets during this time. If you want to have any member of the Team of Officials or the Regional Team in your NMO hour someday, make sure to contact us beforehand so we can plan that out. What not to forget: Settle the exact time and place with your delegates during day one. Please note, Internet is sometimes limited during IFMSA events because of the large amount of connected devices. Training Sessions: The Capacity Building team of the Regional Meeting will prepare awesome training sessions for the attendees; topics will be shared during the event. We strongly recommend you to attend these sessions, since they will provide invaluable knowledge and skills to the participants. What not to forget: Don’t forget to register early and on time, since the sessions usually have limited spots.

Poster Fair: We decided that the topic for this year should be Climate Change in the Americas region (same as the theme event). Even though the posters must be related to the selected topic, not all the contents will be the same. We are open to see a lot of possibilities: national policies regarding Climate Change, medical education and climate change, activities related to Climate Change your NMO has done, etc. The best poster will be rewarded at the end of the second Plenary simulation. What not to forget: Try to bring your poster printed since we cannot promise to have any available printers. For those who will be presenting a poster, please remember to be on time to hang it.

Theme Event: During each RM a series of talks/round tables are held to discuss and inform of a particular topic. This year, these talks will be about Climate change in the Americas region, an issue usually not included in medical curricula but still a matter which grows in importance every day. The effect of Climate change in public health is one of the greatest issues doctors and medical students will face in the coming years. What not to forget: All sessions of the meeting will be in English, since that's the official language of the Federation. Make sure to prepare questions and actively engage in the discussions. Joint sessions: Joint sessions will be an opportunity to share a parallel session with another standing committee. Use this opportunity to learn a bit more about other Standing Committees of IFMSA, and how all our committees can work together on different topics. Plenary simulation: Even though the official plenaries take place during the GAs, in the RM you will be able to attend the plenary simulations, designed to show the attendants how the plenary procedures work, so that they will have the basic knowledge to handle themselves at a GA. In the course of these plenaries, the Activities Presentation will take place, and we will discuss and modify the IOGs as well. What not to forget: Bring your flags! And make sure your complete delegation is there to participate in the plenaries. We recommend you to discuss how a plenary is conducted during your NMO hours, what a procedural motion is and when to place them, what's a statement, a point of information and a point of order. You can always ask for the help of the Regional Team. Activities Presentation: The activities fair is your chance to share your National activities with the rest of the region. Present your best activities, projects and ideas to the rest of the Americas members, and maybe you'll see your activity redone in other Americas countries. The winner will be selected by a jury of selected International IFMSA representatives and rewarded at the end of the second Plenary simulation.

What not to forget: The same activity can be presented in both the activities fair and the activities presentation. Make sure to prepare a presentation and provide it to the person in charge (will be announced during the RM) on time. Activities Fair: Do you have a national activity that you love and you wished all the attendants heard about it? Use this opportunity to present your activity in the Plenary simulation. The best presentation will win the "Best activity of the region" award. What not to forget: Make your stand rock! You will have a table and space to present a poster, and you may bring stickers, a laptop with slides or whatever you feel like adding to your stand to make your activity stand out!
