A letter of intent The goals I put in front of me are plain and simple: I would like to learn a lot, to become a better person and a professional, and to improve the world that surrounds me - and I would like to be doing it throughout my life. Architecture truly represents me in almost everything I do - for me, it is a combination of art, science, religion and daily needs. I think that earning the degree with the University of Applied Arts in Vienna would help me build a stronger personal foundation with architecture and to learn new ways of applying it to the world around me. I would like to outline several reasons supporting my choice below. Last summer I have earned my Bachelor degree at Moscow Architectural Institute (MArchI). During my studies there, I enjoyed architecture more and more every year, and I am extremely grateful to my Alma Mater for all the knowledge and experience I gathered there. Still, I decided not to continue my studies at MArchI - the main reason for that is MArchI’s strong bond with its traditional educational methods. Whilst I think of it as of a sustained advantage that truly helps one to build a fundamental knowledge base, I feel now that I would like to focus more on conceptual thinking and analysis and to develop myself as a well-round architect, as opposed to focusing predominantly on literal design projects, its forms and layouts something I feel I will be able to learn at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Now I would like to highlight another reason supporting my decision. Back in 2015, I held an architectural internship in Tokyo, Japan, in Junya Ishigami’s office. It was a truly amazing experience, and the key idea i have taken away from this internship is that interacting with professionals from all over the world allows one to discover new ways of designing and thinking. I also believe that this experience made me more mature, responsible and efficient as a professional. I feel that an opportunity to receive my master’s degree would allow me to get lots of global experience and would steepen my learning curve a lot. Finally, my thinking of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna was reinforced by a number of inspiring articles and positive reviews from my friends, as well as by examining diplomas of the Studio Kazuyo Sejima - which I found extremely intriguing.

I have decided to create this portfolio on the basis of a little philosophy I made up on my own, which is represented in select works of mine. The idea behind this philosophy is the birth of an architectural performance amidst fluctuations of the environment. Every stage of the creation is a logical derivative from the previous one. At first, there are the surroundings. One cannot affect it he just observes. As the architect observes and absorbs the knowledge about environment, he filters it through his own mind. Then comes the thinking part, and out of one’s mind a project is born. It is yet on a paper or on the screen, but is an immense amount of potential energy, which is locked between 0’s and 1’s. Finally, when time comes, the project is materialized and surroundings expand. Current portfolio follows stated above: first there are things that i have seen, then i passed them through my hand in sketches, then i designed my own projects, and finally i built them.

Museum of the 20th century The history, the temp, the flow of 20th century was so energetic, so revolutionary, so impetuous, it was literally a whirlwind. The project of the museum turns Kulturforum into a petrified battlefield, surrounded by such motley architectural monuments as Hans Scharoun’s philarmonie and library, Neue Galerie by Mies Van Der Rohe and a lutheran St.-Matthäus-Kirche. The pjocted was carried out according to the terms of a competition held in 2015. Museum is expected to be bounded with the Neue Galerie with an underground link. Dispersed volumes grow from the square; they contain functions conditioned by the competition, yet do not break the space. type: student project based on a competition function: museum, cafe, library, etc. plot: extension of the Neue Galerie, beautification of the site location: Berlin, Germany year: 2015

Cultural quarter in Irkutsk. Part I Glass and bricks In the very center of Irkutsk, adjacent to the main historical city square, there is an industrial site, which houses old and currently unused heating station with a gigantic smokestack. In 2017, the government of Irkutsk hosted an architectural competition to redevelop the site. Programme advised to fulfill the territory with a music hall, trading center and an immense amount of residential square meters. After analyzing the territory and vising the site, i decided to interpret it slightly different and create a massive cultural quarter. This industrial site is located along the Angara river, and it breaks the embankment in two. Urbanistic meaning of the project is to bring it together and create a second city center, reflective to the one which is located down by the river and is not a cultural, but a commercial center. One part of the project is my diploma and it consists of redevlopment of the red-brick heating station and merging it with new volumes, with a simple geometry and light materials. Spaces created are multifunctional: coworkings, hotel, food market, a blackbox theater and more. type: student project based on a competition function: multifunctional cultural center plot: creating new buildings with underground parking; merging with existing building location: Irkutsk, Russia year: 2017

Cultural quarter in Irkutsk. Part II Rust and delicacy By this provoking project i want people to learn to always think critically, i want their thought to fly further than a visual impression. Giant, brutal and rusted form will at first make an observer nervous, and probably will make him reject it, but then, the what wonderful, that hides inside this immense ship stuck in ices, the vital and exalted music, the violin’s creaks and besotted pianos, will become a complete contradiction to what has been seen outside. A view will become other. Some will enlighten, some will remain unpleased. No one will remain indifferent. type: student project based on a competition function: a philarmonie for 1200 seats; a music school location: Irkutsk, Russia year: 2016

School in Moscow The school is divided by age: elementary school is a white cylinder with classes at the edges and an oak tree growing in the center, which creates a fabuluous alike recreation space; high school is a slightly more strict rectangular volume with small recreations and classes stringed with corridors. Two different worlds intersect when it comes to having a meal in a dining room merged with the landscape. Schools are also connected with a slim one-storeyed slab, which contains coworkings and extra openspaces, acessible by all students. On one side this volume ends with a school auditorium, on the other - with a panoramic view of the old Moscow.

Window Pavillion The great variety of old wooden windows and frames, that were hopelessly lying on the ground on my countryside urged me to create a pavillion, a small house, entire core of which would be constructed of various old windows. Some of it are without glass, some with, some were repainted multiple times but each of them - unique. It seemed to me it would have been quite lyric to drink tea and in such a teahouse, made entirely of the past, and all that - sunk in the greenery of the site. It took a while, but approximately 30m2 of the window surface were collected, then thoroughly listed, analyzed by its toughness, and finally a project was digitally modelled. In the upcoming summer it will be possible to erect the construction.

Borsh’s summer house Living in an urban flat through the year, it would have been fair for a rabbit Borsch to visit countryside from time to time. I have decided to create a small shelter for him so that he could enjoy openspace and yet i could know he’s safe . A shelter is made of available materials, it has no bottom, so fresh grass is always at service for the rabbit. As far as i was using the metal grid, i have decided to experiment with curved surfaces of negative curvature and also spatially divide the space to create more private part and more opened one.

Shishkovitsa: a pinecone installation Cleaning up the countryside i have collected a lot of pinecones. A pinecone is a wonderful example of a tectonic natural structure, and it was simply impossible to dispose a box full of those, so together with my friend Viktoriya we completed a tiny workshop together by designing the structure and hanging these cones. At first was created a 3d model and then, using listed parameters, we created a small pavillion using a host metal grid, fishing line and pinecones itselves. Unfortunately, autumn arrived too soon, and there are few rows left to complete in spring. type: hand-made pavillion function: art installation plot: curved surface, modelled on pc and shaped later Completed together with Viktoriya Matryuk location: Moscow region, Russia year: 2015

Architectural foams While working with a foam cutter at work, i sometimes found beautiful shape motivs in small leftover parts of model at work. I felt pity throwing them away, but when they fulfilled my desk, i created a small shelf and placed my foams there. These little sculptures do not hold any particular meaning, but inspire me during work time. type: hand-made models function: procrastinating devices plot: disposable pearls year: 2016-2017
