BATON ROUGE — Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a State of Emergency in Louisiana due to an outbreak of severe weather and tornadoes across several different areas. A line of storms associated with a cold front moved across the state Tuesday bringing heavy rainfall, high winds and tornadic activity, with at least one confirmed EF-1 tornado. Many parishes have reported downed power lines, debris and damage to numerous structures. Beauregard, Rapides, Vernon and Webster Parishes have reported significant damage. One fatality related to the storms has also been reported in Vernon Parish. The See EDWARDS, on page 2

WASHINGTON —President Donald Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in a near party-line vote Wednesday. He is still the President. What comes next is a trial in the Senate early next year that could, but probably won't, cost him the White House. SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would not commit Wednesday night to sending the two

articles of impeachment to the Senate. "That would have been our intention, but we'll see what happens over there," the California Democrat signaled at her news conference. Some progressives have urged Democratic leaders to withhold the articles until Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, agrees to procedures for the trial that Democrats have called for,

On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, 5 Belaire Magnet High School students shared their sustainable and renewable energy inventions at Project Shark Tank. Project Shark Tank is a 9 week creative entrepreneurial PBL project that has given students the responsibility of creating a useful invention or improving an existing invention and making it environmentally friendly or putting a renewable energy aspect within the final product. Students in the Engineering and Robotics classes have been presented a driving or challenge question/s and throughout the PBL process have come up with an answer. The "Driving or Challenge Question/s" were "What product can you create or improve that is environmentally friendly or uses renewable energy? How can this environmentally friendly or renewable energy product be marketed to the masses? The event is a fictional rendition of the popular television program, Shark Tank. Judge were awarded amounts between $300,000 - $700,000 to bid on the projects. The panel of community judges were Deon Guillory (an-

as well as agreeing to bring in firsthand witnesses like acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to testify. Pelosi said Democrats will make the decision "as a group" on when to send the articles to the Senate. It's not clear what advantages there might be in holding on to them. There are procedural concerns, however, behind not sending the articles Wednesday night: The Senate would have to take them up Thursday, and that would shut down action there, which could mess with a must-pass spending bill. The House also has to name impeachment managers for the trial. "We cannot name managers until we see what the process is on the Senate side, and we hope that will be soon," Pelosi said. "So far we haven't seen anything that looks fair

HOW THE HISTORIC VOTE WENT DOWN The House exercised its constitutional right to charge Trump with high crimes and misdemeanors through votes on two articles of impeachment that will be familiar, at this point, to most Americans and now headed for the history books: n Abuse of power for his effort to withhold taxpayer money from Ukraine and get that country to investigate his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden; n Obstruction of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with the oversight investigation. IMPEACHMENT MATH The abuse of power article passed 230-197 with one lawmaker, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, voting present. One independent supported impeachment and two Democrats
gardening. Special care was made to ensure odor containment. The compost can remain in the unit for up to 3 months. The unit can be self installed and is easily cleaned with water. PAPER PINE-CRETE BRICKS Student Presenters: Amadou Fall, Minh Le, Angie Tobias Paper Pine-Crete Bricks were created for garden enhancement such as garden brick pathway, garden bench, brick edging for garden beds, brick edging for walkway, tree ring, raised planters, garden markers, and colorful yard art. It is comparable to any landscaping brick on the market, yet it is less expensive to manufacture and more affordable for consumers. Paper Pine Crete bricks are slated to be distributed in the US and plans for expanded distribution globally. WASTE AWAY, LCC Student Presenters: Christine Whitley, Kerrin Whitley and Michael Matthews Waste Away is an ingenious and creative home decor company that specializing in upcycling and repurposing waste, specifically opposed both articles of impeachment, along with every Republican. One Democrat split votes, supporting the abuse of power article but not obstruction of Congress. The obstruction of Congress article passed 229-198 with Gabbard voting present. Trump's response As the vote was conducted, Trump was at a "Merry Christmas" campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, which is the district represented by Rep. Justin Amash, the former Republican-turned-independent who voted to impeach him. Trump delayed his appearance to watch the vote. "After three years of sinister witch hunts, hoaxes, scams, the House Democrats are trying to nullify the ballots of tens of millions of patriotic Americans," he said.

Scam from page 1 Emails with the subject line “GET PAID TO DRIVE” are typically associated with these scams, according to the FTC. In the email, the scammer offers to pay the student between $250 and $350 a week to drive around with their vehicle wrapped to advertise a well-known product – or even an event like the 2020 Olympics. The scammer even provides the student with a check to deposit into their bank account and advises them to withdraw a certain amount of money to provide to a specialist who will wrap the vehicle in the ads. “And they’ll tell you to pay by money order, Walmart money services, or by making a cash deposit directly into the company’s bank account – all ways that are hard to cancel or get your money back,” according to the FTC.

National Weather Service offices that cover Louisiana continue to perform surveys to determine the exact number of tornadoes. This Emergency Declaration allows the state of Louisiana to provide additional assistance to the impacted areas. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the victim's family who died during this severe weather outbreak.” Gov. Edwards said. “After surveying several of the areas impacted by the storms from the air and on the ground, we are fortunate there are not more injuries. Today, I declared a state of emergency in Louisiana. We expect several parishes to declare an emergency as they transition from the response mode to the recovery mode. This step will allow us to provide assistance where needed and start the overall recovery process at the state level.”

By Charles F. Stanley In Touch Ministries Most people define Christmas by what they see—the trees, lights, shopping, gifts, food, and parties. However, that’s not what Christmas is all about. It’s not something we can observe but is one of the three most important events in human history. God’s plan for the salvation of mankind had to begin with the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Without this, there would have been no crucifixion, no resurrection, and no hope for humanity. Christmas is the celebration of that moment in history when Holy God came down to earth in the form of a virgin-born baby in order to reveal God’s love for sinful mankind with His death on the cross, which paid our sin debt in full. And every year we remember this truth and celebrate what Jesus did for us. He came to earth so that we could go to heaven. Once we understand the true significance of Christmas, our attitude about the holiday will change. Instead of focusing on the externals and becoming exhausted with all the preparations and activities, we’ll see that Christmas is about Jesus, who came to offer us forgiveness of sins and the hope of eternal life.
T h e Wo r d o f God is the only completely reliable source of information about Christ. Here are some Charles things it tells Stanlry us about Him: • MATTHEW 1:18-23. This record of Christ’s birth reveals that He was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit, thereby fulfilling an Old Testament prophecy. Joseph was told to name the child Jesus because He would save His people from their sins. • COLOSSIANS 2:9. Jesus wasn’t an ordinary man. “In Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” • ISAIAH 59:1-2. The Lord is not unable to save sinners, but our sins have made a separation between Him and us. According to Romans 3:23, we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. This means we have violated His laws and are not what He intended us to be. The only one who can end our separation from God is Jesus Christ. Apart from Him, there is no way for us to come
A
s we rejoice and celebrate this wonderful season of Christmas, let us not forget to thank baby Jesus for coming into our lives. Let us together prepare ourselves to welcome him into the homes of our hearts. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
to the Father. • ROMANS 5:10-11. Even though we may see ourselves as fairly good in comparison to others, God doesn’t see us that way. Our sins make us His enemies. Yet while we were in that state of enmity, Christ reconciled us to the Father through His death. • ROMANS 6:23. We also deserve to die and be eternally separated from God because the wages for sin is death. The Lord sent His Son to earth to provide a way to forgive us and rescue us from this condemnation. • COLOSSIANS 1:19-22. Christ paid the penalty for our sins by dying in our place. He made peace with God though His blood shed on the cross. Even though we were formerly alienated and hostile toward Him in our thoughts and behaviors, Jesus reconciled us so He could present us to His Father as holy, blameless, and beyond reproach. Reconciliation is God’s work—His Spirit convicts us of sin so we’re aware of our need for salvation, and Jesus

Once we have heard the message of salvation in Christ and have believed, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit as a promise of our eternal inheritance. This seal guarantees that our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life and will never be erased. The Spirit comes to indwell us forever, giving us assistance and guidance as we live in this world. God’s Word is our guide for living and a light to show us the way in a dark world. NBA Roundup: Heat Snap 76ers' Home Win Streak at 14
Kendrick Nunn scored 26 points, Bam Adebayo added 23, and the visiting Miami Heat defeated the 76ers 108-104 on Wednesday, snapping Philadelphia’s seasonlong home winning streak. At 14-0, the 76ers had been the last unbeaten home team in the league. They trailed by 16 points with nearly seven minutes remaining in the game before rallying to within two, but Al Horford’s potential go-ahead 3-point try missed with five seconds left. Duncan Robinson contributed 15 points and Jimmy Butler had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Heat, who had been blown out 113-86 in their first meeting with the 76ers this season in Philadelphia on Nov. 23. Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 22 points and 19 rebounds while Tobias Harris added 20 points. Ben Simmons and Josh Richardson had 17 apiece. New Orleans Pelicans 107 Minnesota Timberwolves 99 Brandon Ingram scored 34 points, and New Orleans ended its franchise-worst, 13-game losing streak with a victory over Minnesota in Minneapolis. Jrue Holiday added 18 points, JJ Redick had 12, Josh Hart added 11 and Lonzo Ball 10 as the Pelicans earned their first victory since Nov. 21. New Orleans was playing the opener of a four-game road trip. Andrew Wiggins scored 27 points to lead the Timberwolves, who lost their eighth consecutive game. Minnesota center Karl-Anthony Towns didn’t play because of a sprained left knee sustained in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

Oklahoma City Thunder 126 - Memphis Grizzlies 122 Dennis Schroder matched his season-high with 31 points and Oklahoma City pulled off a second consecutive improbable comeback, beating visiting Memphis. Schroder scored 22 of his points in the second half, when the Thunder started chipping away at a 24-point deficit. It was the third-biggest comeback in Oklahoma City history and came just two days after the Thunder won after trailing the Chicago Bulls by 26 points. Oklahoma City is just the second team in the last 25 seasons to win back-to-back games after trailing by 20 or more points, along with the Indiana Pacers in January 2010, according to Elias Sports. Boston Celtics 109 - Dallas Mavericks 103 Kemba Walker scored 32 points and Jaylen Brown added 26 as visiting Boston ended a two-game losing streak by beating Dallas. Jayson Tatum scored 24 points while Enes Kanter grabbed 13 re-
bounds as the Celtics rallied from a 10-point second-quarter deficit to avoid dropping to .500 on the road. While the Celtics are 10-1 in home games, they are just 8-6 away from Boston. Kristaps Porzingis had 23 points and 13 rebounds before he fouled out while Seth Curry added 20 off the bench as the Mavericks lost a game for the first time without Luka Doncic, who is out for two weeks with a sprained ankle. Chicago Bulls 110 - Washington Wizards 109 (OT) Wendell Carter Jr. hit a goahead reverse layup with 9.1 seconds remaining in overtime and Lauri Markkanen scored a gamehigh 31 points to spark visiting Chicago to a come-from-behind victory against Washington. Washington led by as many as 18 in the fourth quarter, but scuffled down the stretch as the Bulls closed regulation on a 23-5 run. Bradley Beal missed a short jumper in the paint as time expired, as the Wizards lost for the fifth time in six games.
