Dear Reader I am delighted to welcome you to our Spring 2014 list. With 26 new and reissued books across all three of our imprints, it shows both the diversity of our offering and its consistency: every title highlights the design, production and editorial standards on which we have built our reputation. We are proud to remain independent and, although small, we have built a global presence from our local roots in Sussex. Lead titles from Ivy Press include a book of appealingly luxe projects produced in collaboration with France’s leading haberdasher, Maison Sajou; a fun introduction to sewing in Sew Quick, Sew Cute from bestselling author Fiona Goble; and a delectable recipe book that taps into the current cooking trend for all things tiny, Treat Petite. In the reference corner, The Book of Eggs is a guide to over 600 of the most remarkable birds’ eggs, showcasing the world-class collection of Chicago’s Field Museum, while Hummingbirds profiles every known species, shown in dazzling colour and diminutive life size. We’ve added titles on Leonardo da Vinci and Mythology to our bestselling 30 Second… series, and two more Love Story books, which document in words and pictures moving real-life romances from both World Wars. Compost, from our consciousness-raising Leaping Hare imprint, is the first in a series of family guides to gardening and is packed with fun activities for parents and children to do together. We are also excited to be publishing two books in association with the Ecologist magazine, on Fashion and Food. Our growing Ivy Kids list highlights the importance of kindness with Do Nice, Be Kind, Spread Happy, helping children to make the world a better place, while Outdoor Wonderland, Flowerpot Farm and Secrets of the Seashore will all heighten kids’ awareness of the world around them. With a growing backlist of titles, the Ivy lists continue to grow from strength to strength and I would like to thank you all for your contribution to that success. Please contact me if you have any comments about our books; we’re always keen to have feedback from our readers.

Treat Petite 40 mini bakes & bites, sweet and savoury What is it that makes tiny things to eat so appealing? There’s an Alice-in-Wonderland charm about teeny petits fours, delectable little sponge cakes, button-like macaroons in sugar-candy colours… and things you can just pop in your mouth and finish in a bite or two never leave you feeling too full. Treat Petite takes a trend that’s on the up in expensive patisseries and shows you how to make it work at home. You don’t need a load of special gadgets or fancy techniques to make these miniature luxuries, either: just a few pointers on how to keep them perfect. And despite their diminutive size, each of these treats can really work a cake stand. Fiona Pearce runs Icing Bliss, a business specializing in vintage-inspired bakes based in London, where she also teaches cake-decorating courses at Cakeology. Treat Petite is her second book; her first, Cake Cra Made Easy, was published in 2013.

Anatomy Illustrated with the original drawings from the classic Gray’s Anatomy Gray’s Anatomy, that classic beloved of medical students for over 100 years, is the fundamental work underlying Anatomy. But this is Gray’s with a difference – with all the fine engravings of the original, but accompanied by fresher, more accessible text that explains in lay terms exactly how the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone, and all the other systems as well. The book contains over 350 detailed engravings – many of them in colour – and is an invaluable guide for all students of anatomy, whether studying for medical or artistic purposes. It is also an appealing sourcebook for artists looking for inspiration from the exquisitely detailed engravings. Why Does My Cat Do That?

Answers to the 50 questions cat lovers ask
A
Why does your cat always head straight for visitors who can’t stand feline company? Why does he chatter his teeth when he sees a bird and prefer pond water to fresh? And why does he neglect the carefully chosen scratching post you picked out in favour of returning your sofa to its raw fibre state? A neat Q & A format addresses the key questions that cat owners pose, and helps you solve the riddles of your pet’s behaviour. It may put some of your own foibles into context, too!

Answers to the 50 questions dog lovers ask Why does your dog get so possessive over the sofa, or so excited when someone calls at the front door? And why does he bark at bicycles and growl at men in hats? And why, oh why, does he insist on introducing himself to every new canine acquaintance from the ‘wrong’ end? Here are the answers to the top 50 questions that dog owners ask, presented in a reader-friendly Q & A format, and incorporating plenty of tips extracted from the current expert thinking on dog motivation and behaviour. 10,000 Ghost Stories Create over 10,000 ghosts & 10,000 stories There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when exchanging spine-tingling tales – whenever there are friends together, and it’s dark and perhaps a little quiet outside … 10,000 Ghost Stories adds a bloodcurdling twist to this tradition. Lisa Weber has created 22 ghosts that are each split at waist and neck, so that you can swap gruesome or ephemeral (or just plain nasty) body parts at random. On the opposite page, Jason Hook’s stories are also split into three parts, so that every spirit has a spirited tale to match. Lisa K. Weber graduated from Parsons School of Design and has since had her work published in various forms, including graphic novelizations and character designs for children’s animations. She lives and works in Los Angeles. Jason Hook has written over 20 published titles and was finalist in the BBC’s End of Story competition. He conceived the first title in this series, 10,000 Zombies.

30-Second Leonardo da Vinci His 50 greatest ideas and inventions, each explained in half a minute The bestselling 30-Second… series takes a revolutionary approach to learning, presenting ideas in 300 words and a single image – absorbable in just 30 seconds a time. 30-Second Leonardo da Vinci uses this unique approach to grapple with the ultimate Renaissance Man. Artist, anatomist, sculptor, inventor, architect, cartographer, mathematician, musician, botanist, geologist – the word polymath does not quite do Leonardo justice. Here, one of the world’s leading scholars of his life and work presents an instant and expert guide to his greatest innovations. Marina Wallace is Professor of Curating and Director of Artakt at Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design, University of the Arts, London. She was Co-Director, with Professor Martin Kemp, of the Universal Leonardo project.

30-Second Mythology An instant guide to the world of Greek and Roman mythology
Discover the stories behind everyday references and understand their modern legacy
With timelines, glossaries and succinct biographies of the classical writers
January 2014
The 50 most important Greek and Roman myths, monsters, heroes and gods, each explained in half a minute 30-Second Mythology offers the shortest path to a world of gods and monsters. So much modern culture traces its origins back to Greek and Roman mythology. Sail through these 50 succinct 30-second legends to discover what Hercules did to deserve his 12 labours, why Odysseus took 10 years to travel 500 miles, and how Narcissus found the love of his life. The perfect reference book for creative writers, it also looks at myth locations and the great storytellers, and offers explanations of myths’ classical legacies, from the Oedipus Complex to Narcissus Syndrome. Robert A. Segal is Sixth Century Chair in Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. He is a leading authority on approaches to myth and is the author of Myth: A Very Short Introduction and Theorizing About Myth.

3-SECOND MUSE
Gaia was the primordial “earth mother,” the oldest of goddesses— and for many the one most powerfully still with us today.
3-MINUTE ODYSSEY
Beginning in the 1970s, the scientist James Lovelock propounded what he called (at novelist William Golding’s suggestion) the “Gaia hypothesis”—the name reinforcing the concept of the earth as a single, complex, self-regulating living organism, of which human beings are a part. While scientists continue to debate Lovelock’s theory, Gaia remains a powerful figure for environmental and pagan movements.
18 g Creation
standing-place” (in the early Greek poet Hesiod’s words), Gaia emerged at the very beginning of creation, after Chaos. Developing from a living entity into an outright personality, Gaia gave virgin birth to Uranus, the “sky father,” then produced with him a mighty brood of children, headed by the Titans. In the strikingly Oedipal generational struggles of early Greek myth, Gaia’s role is equivocal. When Uranus, fearful of his children, buried them back in her womb, Gaia gave her youngest son Cronus the adamantine sickle to castrate him; when Cronus in turn started swallowing his children, Gaia freed the youngest, Zeus, to use as a weapon against him. But when Zeus imprisoned his father, Gaia gave birth to the fearsome snaky monster Typhon to attack Zeus, only to make peace with Zeus and advise him how to counter the threat of his child Athena. Gaia’s combination of the nurturing and the destructive reflected Greek male anxieties about female and maternal power. More fundamentally, Gaia was the earth itself, at once a beneficent and a ruthless mother, both womb and tomb for all the generations of earthly life.
RELATED MYTH Almost all mythologies personify the earth as a mother goddess. The Egyptians are an exception, with a male earth (Geb) and female sky (Nut).
Minos/Minotaur is sometimes taken as the embodiment of the Cretan sun god, who is usually depicted as a bull. Crete has always been associated with bulls. When Zeus fell in love with the Phoenician princess Europa, he disguised himself as a white bull, lured her onto his back, and then swam off with her to Crete.

by his name Asterion (the “starry one”), was the result of King Minos’ hubris. In the grip of a fraternal power struggle for the throne of Crete, Minos appealed to Poseidon. The god sent him a white bull from the sea, which Minos was to sacrifice. It was such a splendid beast that the king kept it for himself and sacrificed a lesser animal instead. In revenge, Poseidon asked Aphrodite to make Minos’ wife, Pasiphae, fall hopelessly in love with the bull, which she did. She then commanded Daedalus to build a wooden cow into which she could climb to consummate her passion. She suckled the resultant bull-headed child, the Minotaur, but when it became too wild and aggressive, Minos ordered Daedalus to build the labyrinth to imprison it. Through political machinations, Minos was able to demand tribute from Aegeus, King of Athens, in the form of a supply of maidens and youths to feed the Minotaur. After three years, the Athenian hero Theseus volunteered to be part of the tribute. With the help of Ariadne, Minos’ daughter, and a ball of twine to mark the route, he fought and killed the Minotaur, cut off its head, and escaped from the labyrinth.
RELATED MYTH In Japanese classical literature the ushi-oni is a bull-headed demon. It takes various forms but is typically a horned and ferocious monster.

Compost A family guide to making soil from scraps What is soil?
Complexity of soil
You may think that soil is just the dirt that gets stuck on your shoes when you’ve been outside, but there is a lot more to it than that. Soil is a mixture of different minerals, organic matter, water and air. If it is healthy it will also be bustling with life – some things you can see, like worms, and some that you would need a microscope to see.
Types of soil Soil can be divided into different types, according to its ‘texture’. This describes the size of the mineral particles that the soil is actually made of. The three main types of soil are sand, silt and clay.
You could say that we know more about the moon than we do about what goes on under our feet in the soil. With billions of organisms in every spadeful, we only understand a bit of what is going on at a microscopic level in a healthy living soil. There are tiny tunnels, homes, families of organisms and great clusters of activity.
Think of a big city like London or New York, and everything that happens there every day. People eat, talk, fight, laugh, cry… Shrink all of that down so that it fits into a bucket and you can start to picture what is happening down there in the soil.
What happens to the food we don’t eat – all those discarded apple cores and rejected Brussels sprouts? Did you know that there are as many living organisms in a teaspoon of soil as there are people in the world? And that worms are our cool, earthy friends?
Most soils are a mixture of these types, and there is a complicated way that soil scientists work out exactly what kind of soil you have, depending on the amount of each one.
Toot toot! We have places to be and compost to make!

Out of the way, burrow hog!
✻
Sand has the biggest mineral particles, which measure between 0.05mm and 2mm – that is really, really small, but the other two types are even smaller!
✻ Silt particles measure a tiny 0.002mm to 0.05mm and would only just be visible if you had one on your finger.
12
A desert has no topsoil, while in rainforests such as the Amazon, the topsoil is up to 10 metres deep!
✻
Clay particles are the smallest of all, and you’d need a microscope to see them – they are the bits in soil that are smaller than 0.002mm.

While the word ‘castle’ conjures up an image of the classic medieval stone edifice, resplendent with towers and turrets, battlements and barbicans, and the odd oubliette, the impulse to build defensive works is as old as civilization itself; and the evolution of such architecture not only encompasses global cultures but is also a physical expression of the changing face of military tactics and technology.

Castles takes a uniquely architectural approach to deconstructing all forms of fortification, showing how the work of architect, stonemason and engineer evolved to repel the increasingly destructive power of an attack, from siege engine to artillery. While the medieval castle is analysed in detail, the book addresses a broad chronology of defences – from the earliest fortresses and walled cities of the ancient world through to the point in the 19th century when modern weapons forced armies underground. Castles uses stylish two-tone engravings to dissect a wealth of examples from both western and eastern cultures;‘anatomies’ that annotate the classic structures for both their architectural and military significance; and ‘Then & Now’ features that offer unique comparisons between castles in their pomp as depicted in illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, maps and paintings, and matching colour photographs of those same castles as they appear today. This architectural review of soaring towers and redoubtable walls provides both a fascinating narrative and an essential visual reference for the general and military historian.
