1000 Symbols What shapes mean in art and myth
Symbols are often seen as constituting an international language and to some extent they do, but that language is far from universal—context means everything in this complicated but engrossing form of communication. Take, for example, a cross, a crane, or a swastika: each one has a different and distinct significance and meaning for a Buddhist, an art historian, or a student of the occult. 1000 Symbols resolves the problem by offering groupings of related symbols, every one with a neat definition of its history and its cross-cultural meanings. ✤ A comprehensive single-

Color Chicago 20 views to color by hand
cover to come
It’s the third-largest city in the United States and whether your taste runs to skyscrapers or Prairie Style, Chicago fills the bill. But there’s more to this town than its skyline. Chicago has its own green walkway, the 606, while the Field Museum displays the most complete T. Rex skeleton on Earth—incongruously named Sue. Add in great public spaces, which also feature wonderful public art, and you’ll find Chicago far from colorless. Color Chicago offers 20 vistas, each with plenty of detail. Grab the crayons and go on a virtual tour, from Navy Pier to Millennium Park and from Wrigley Field to the Adler Planetarium—you’ll find it all here.
Color San Francisco 20 views to color by hand
cover to come
What comes to mind when you picture San Francisco? The towers of Golden Gate Bridge piercing the fog, cable cars trundling up some of the city’s incredibly steep hills—or the chorus-girl line-up of the city’s Victorian houses with their cute gingerbread trim? Or the City Lights bookstore, the soaring rocket-ship shape of the TransAmerica skyscraper, or the 360-degree view you get looking down from the Twin Peaks? Whatever characterizes San Francisco to you, you’ll find it here, shown in minute detail. And every scene is populated with San Franciscans, parading their laidback style. All you have to bring is the crayons. Enjoy.

Whether you’re an aspiring medical student or artist, or simply have an appreciation for the human form, this book offers a comprehensive introduction to the body and its functions in an accessible and enjoyable way. By combining the complex systems of anatomical study with the therapeutic pleasure of coloring, this book will help you to understand how the body works, from the protruding base of the skull to the autonomic nervous system. Featuring illustrations from the original Gray’s Anatomy alongside key facts which dissect the anatomy itself, it offers an interactive approach to anatomy—and the perforated pages allow you to take out the images and use them as inspiration or study aid when you’ve finished. Color Anatomy explores the body through anatomical systems, reduced to line so that the reader can color them in while learning about their specific function. The result is an accessible insight to one of the most complicated mechanisms in the world.

The Label A story for families
Being a new parent is nerve-jangling enough, but what happens if your baby is not what you were expecting? How do you deal with the conflicting feelings when your expectations are rerouted?
✤ A beautifully produced,
poignant short story about those early days after giving birth to a child with a learning disability ✤ Endorsed by MENCAP ✤ Supported with thoughtful
images from an award-winning illustrator
This happened to Caroline White. So she pulled together her contrary emotions—the good, the bad, and the ugly—and spun them into a poignant and uplifting fable. Written with honesty and love, The Label is anchored by a simple yet powerful metaphor, and explores what happens when you let the label go and watch as your child blossoms into their best life, untroubled by negative expectations. Caroline White is a powerful advocate for inclusion,
steadfast in her insistence that all children be able to enjoy their lives to the fullest, irrespective of any prejudice or diagnoses. Sandra Isaksson is an award-winning designer and

Mindful Thoughts for Cyclists presents a series of focused meditations on why and how cycling can be a powerful practice of mindful awareness. It’s an effective demonstration that cycling is about far more than competitive racing and physical endurance; it’s about joy, meditative wonder, and spiritual enrichment. From the pleasure of riding down a hill to finding the upsides of a puncture, Nick Moore takes us on a journey around the true value of riding a bike—the experience of the ride itself, and all it can teach us. Nick Moore is a cyclist, writer, and cycling journalist.
He was a high-mileage ‘MAMIL’ (middle-aged man in Lycra) for over a decade and had an epiphany when diagnosed with osteoarthritis aged 40. Since then, he has learned to enjoy cycling for the journey rather than the destination. He writes a daily cycling blog; this is his first book.

We know whales, dolphins, and porpoises are the smartest creatures in the ocean, we read of their tool use, their self-recognition, their complex songs, and their intricate societies—but how do we know what we know? Deep Thinkers brings together the top researchers in the field to examine cetacean brains, compare the intelligence markers of cetaceans with those of birds, bats, and primates, and ask how we define intelligence in non-humans. Viruses are the last frontier of undiscovered life on our planet. The most abundant type of organism on Earth, they infect all types of cellular life, and, as microorganisms that cause disease in their hosts, they are highly opportunistic and relentlessly efficient. They exist at the vanguard of DNA variance, exhibiting more structural diversity than plants, animals, archaea, or even bacteria. This 21st-century guide offers an engaging introductory section explaining exactly what viruses are and how they operate, followed by individual profiles of 101 of the world’s most notable examples, each with its own dazzling mugshot. ✤ Each virus profile features
visuals, maps, and lively text to highlight key features ✤ With 101 examples, selected

Thirty-three percent of Americans feel they are living with extreme stress. One in five Germans experiences stress on a regular basis, and workplace stress costs the Australian economy 14.2 billion dollars annually. Stress is a global pandemic, increasingly proven to be a precursor to diseases such as ulcers, depression, and obesity. The Science of Stress explains the current understanding of stress in a concise summary. From why some stress is useful to understanding fear and explaining voodoo death, this book leads the reader through the many ways stress responses affect us. Gregory Fricchione MD is one of the world’s leading
stress experts. On the faculty of Harvard Medical School, he is Director of the Division of Psychiatry and Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has authored several books, including Compassion and Healing in Medicine and Society (2011). We are sleeping less and less: statistics show that insomnia has reached pandemic proportions, and costs healthcare providers billions. Most of us spend a third of our lives asleep—our bodies insist on sleep; without it, we die. But why we sleep still remains relatively mysterious. The Science of Sleep explains the elements of the sleep state and explores the various sleep disorders and how their available treatments work. By offering an accessible account of sleep science, the book allows the reader to assess their relationship with sleep and craft their own approach to having a restful night with the maximum physical return. The Beauty of Numbers in Nature Mathematical patterns and principles from the natural world
Think of a zebra’s stripes, the complexities of a spider’s web, the uniformity of desert dunes, or the spirals in a sunflower head … think of a snowflake. The Beauty of Numbers in Nature shows how life on Earth forms the principles of mathematics. Starting with the simplest patterns, each chapter looks at a different kind of patterning system and the mathematics that underlies it. In doing so the book also uncovers some universal patterns, both in nature and man-made, from the basic geometry of ancient Greece to the visually startling fractals that we are familiar with today. ✤ An appealing look at

4 ONE DIMENSION In order to provide our understanding with some firm foundations, we’re going to construct a catalog of patterns. If this catalog is going to be useful, there’s got to be some organizing principle. Mail-order catalogs organize their contents into broad categories – jewelry, kitchenware, tools, toys. Ours will do the same, but with different categories – symmetry, continuity, dimensionality... The dimension of a mathematical space, roughly speaking, is how many numbers it takes to specify whereabouts you are. The surface of the Earth is two-dimensional. You know where you are provided you know your latitude and your longitude. If you leave the Earth’s surface, then a third number, your height, is required, so space is three-dimensional. Most of Euclid’s geometry takes place in the plane, which is two-dimensional. Any point can be specified by two numbers – how far it lies along an east-west axis, and how far it lies along a north-south one. A line is one-dimensional – just use an east-west axis. Even simpler is a single point, which on its own is zero-dimensional – you don’t need any numbers to say where you are, because you can only be in one place anyway. A zero-dimensional point is a bit too simple to be interesting, but one-dimensional space has a lot more going for it than you might expect. For instance, think about a line of footprints in the snow. If the person making them is walking in a regular rhythm – say on level ground, no snowdrifts, the simplest ‘default’ movement when the mind is otherwise engaged and the feet move almost of their own accord – then the footprints form a regular pattern of two evenly-spaced parallel tracks. One line of prints consists entirely of left feet, regularly spaced; the other line of prints 4 ONE DIMENSION

ABOVE The
dimension of a space is the number of independent directions that exist within it. The space that we inhabit has three dimensions, because three lines can meet each other at right angles. A plane, a flat surface, has only two dimensions, and a line has only one. A space consisting of a single point contains no directions, and is therefore zero-dimensional. In conventional physical space, three dimensions is the limit, but mathematical spaces with four or more dimensions are just as easy to define and think about.

We think of Ancient Greece as the birthplace of democracy and a breeding ground for pioneering philosophers, but what was life really like in a Greek city-state? Who could vote in an election in Athens? What kind of plays did people see at the theatre? How much impact did gods and myths have on the lives of the ancient Greeks? Why were neighbouring states so often at war?

Bond with Your Dog Teaching your dog to be your best friend Recently, science has caught up with what dog owners have always known: dogs feel emotions in the same way that we do. You can simplify training and solve problems if you stop worrying about what your dog is doing and instead focus on what he is feeling—his emotions. No behavior happens, goes on happening, or stops happening, without the dog feeling a certain way first.
