Colour New York 20 iconic views to colour in by hand Not only is New York one of the liveliest cities on earth, but it’s also one of the most colourful, in both the literal and the metaphorical sense. Colour New York captures the energy and excitement of life on its streets against a backdrop of the iconic buildings and landmarks that give it an instant familiarity all over the world. Emma Kelly’s lively and eclectic style of illustration suits her subject perfectly: with locations ranging from Union Square Greenmarket to the Guggenheim Museum and the views from the High Line to the rides at Coney Island, she’s created a visual extravaganza – all you need to add is colour. Emma Kelly spent 12 years as the graphic designer for an architectural company. She entered the national 2012 Olympic Games coin competition, and her winning badminton design was used by the Royal Mint for the 50p sports collection. Since then she has drawn professionally, exploring a variety of different subject matter with pen, ink and colour. Her drawings are unusual and attractive, displaying her intuitive skill of drawing and use of colour. Twenty of the most atmospheric views in Paris are captured here by an illustrator with a well-honed eye for even the tiniest quirky detail. Hennie Haworth has not only captured the classics – after all, it wouldn’t be Colour Paris without the Eiffel Tower – but has also visited some less-expected locations: the quintessentially Parisian sight of a busy lunchtime at Café de Flore, for example, or the spiky, spaceship silhouette of the newly opened Philharmonie de Paris. With all the charm of a 1950s postcard, and all the minute elements that the colouring-in enthusiast needs, this is the next best thing to a real-life walk around the City of Light. Bird Brain An exploration of avian intelligence An absorbing study of how birds think, revealing how science is exploding the myth of our feathered friends being ‘bird brained’, and how recent discoveries may call for us to re-evaluate how we identify and classify intelligence in other animals. Bird Brain will start by looking at the structures and functions of the avian brain, and move on to examine different types of intelligence by profiling the extraordinary behaviours of a broad range of the species, studying the masterminds of the avian world, and examining what types of behaviour can be interpreted as ‘intelligence’ as we would recognize it. Bird Brain will not only look at the well-studied species such as New Caledonian crows and parrots, but also cast a broader eye over the behaviour of a wide range of species from around the world. Dr Nathan Emery is Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Biology at Queen Mary University of London. His research interests have focused on the cognitive abilities of corvids, apes and parrots, and he is currently working with the ravens at the Tower of London. He has authored two previous books and is on the editorial boards of Animal Cognition and the Journal of Comparative Psychology. His work has been extensively reported internationally.

April 2016

Safeguarding our future

*Copy as per prev. catalogue. NB revised cover in folder

At a time when the world faces increasing pressures from climate change and biodiversity loss, seeds have never been more important. Highly complex, they have evolved in myriad ways to adapt to their environments. In this book we explore how seedbearing plants evolved, and unravel the science behind the seed. We also show how scientists are working around the world to gather and bank seeds to save rare and valuable varieties from extinction. Carolyn Fry is a writer and journalist specializing in science, conservation and natural history. She has written six books, covering climate change, botanical explorers and plant science. Carolyn has won many awards, including the European Garden Book Prize for Plant Hunters.

A life-size guide to every species ● A comprehensive guide

to one of the world’s most charming animal families ● Includes the 13

most recent seahorse species discoveries ● With exquisite

photographs and lifesized silhouettes of every known species of seahorse

Seahorses are extraordinary creatures. They swim upright and spend days in dancing courtship. They are small, shy and have heads shaped like miniature ponies. And the male carries the female’s eggs in his pouch and ‘births’ the young. Found worldwide, they are sensitive to environmental disruption and are an obvious flagship group for conservation. Seahorses unveils every species, including the seadragons and pipefish that share the Sygnathidae family. Each of the 47 entries incorporates a photograph and description, so you can admire their beauty as you learn about their ecological importance. Sara Lourie worked on the award-winning BBC film Secret Lives of Seahorses, and has been a research associate on Project Seahorse for the last eight years. She co-authored the Global Identification Guide to Seahorses and has identified and described multiple new pygmy seahorse species.

Jellyfish A natural history Jellyfish are mysterious creatures, luminously beautiful with remarkably varied life cycles. These simple, ancient animals are found in every ocean at every depth, and have lived on Earth for at least the last 500 million years. Ominously, they are also increasing in number as they adapt well to marine environmental degradation. Jellyfish is a timely title that looks at their anatomy, life history, taxonomy and ecology, and includes species profiles featuring stunning marine photography that will have you scanning the depths with renewed interest. Lisa-ann Gershwin is director of the Australian Marine Stinger Advisory Services. She was awarded a Fulbright in 1998 for her studies on jellyfish blooms and evolution. She has discovered over 190 new species, including a new species of dolphin.

Heirloom Plants A complete compendium of heritage vegetables, fruit & flowers Heirloom plants often have a charm lacking in commercially produced varieties. And unless these seeds are grown and saved, they will be not only forgotten, but lost, too. Based on the seed catalogues of Thomas Etty, Heirloom Plants lists exciting cultivars, along with profiles and growing tips. Responsible gardening, certainly – but with more than a hint of romance; who could resist the lure of the splendid Hubbard Green Warty squash, or the Green Zebra tomato?

of an Edwardian plant catalogue alongside the hard information the modern gardener needs ● Gardening with an

eye to biodiversity; these seeds can be saved for future generations of gardeners

Lorraine Harrison is a keen practical gardener with a master’s degree in garden history. In addition to contributing to the gardening quarterly Hortus, she has authored a number of books, among them the bestselling Latin for Gardeners. The Grammar of Ornament A visual reference of form and colour in architecture and the decorative arts ● A reissue of the classic

that inspired designers and architects from William Morris to Frank Lloyd Wright ● One of the most

influential publications of the Victorian age, by a key designer, who was joint architect of the Great Exhibition of 1851 ● Features more than

2,350 colour engravings showcasing a vast range of ornamental styles, from Ancient Egypt and Greece to Imperial China and Elizabethan England

March 2016 recently publish ed

First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament remains a design classic. As Owen Jones, its creator, admired the array of ornament he encountered on his global travels, so his distaste grew for mongrel design which married unrelated styles with a messy end effect. The result was the Grammar. Each illustration is allotted its place within a cultural context and illuminated in this new edition by a contemporary commentary. Owen Jones was an architect and designer who taught Applied Arts at the South Kensington School of Design in the 1850s and served as Superintendent of Works at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Iain Zaczek, who has contributed the new commentaries, is an art historian who has written widely on the history of design.

ADVANCED PROJECTS

PROJECT 12 – MOUSE

YOU WILL NEED Pencil

PROJECT 12

A piece of basswood about 25mm x 15mm x 10mm (1in x 5/8in x 3/8in)

MOUSE

Carving knife

This is the smallest of the advanced projects (with the

Sandpaper

exception of the chicks on pages 98–99, which are far less detailed), and is therefore quite challenging – particularly because the basswood is very lightweight.

Rubber fingertip protector

Draw the mouse onto your wood block, making sure the grain is horizontal. Roughly carve around the outline: behind the head, an angle at the front and the large portion behind the body that is not taken up by the tail.

Small drill with 1.6-mm ( 1/16-in) bit Toothpick Paintbrushes and paint palette Acrylic paints:

If you have trouble with the ears, you can make them

larger, or just paint them on afterwards. If you want to

Darker brown (for paw details)

make it even more challenging, you could add whiskers

Off-white (for belly)

made of fur from a squirrel’s tail or something similar,

Very light pink (for ears, nose and tail)

although you’d need to use a very tiny drill to make the

holes to accommodate them.

Black (for outlines and pupils)

Narrow the tail and head sections, making paring cuts from the sides and cutting the head section from the corners. Don’t take off too much material at the bottom where the little paws are going to be carved.

Use small scooping cuts to round out the body shape. Start at the top of the head and carve towards the tail, establishing the crease between the head and the body. Round off the hindquarters.

Define the tail section, using notching cuts to separate the tail region from the body. Leave a lot of material for the tail – this will keep the strength in the wood and give you something to hold onto. We’ll refine the tail later.

Make a notch to separate the bottom legs from the top legs, using the tail section to hold onto. First cut from below and then from above so you don’t cut off the leg. It’s made more difficult because you’re cutting into the grain, so your tool must be very sharp.

3

75

More than 20 projects to make Whittling is the cheapest and easiest hobby you can imagine: with just a sharp knife, a little practice and the tiniest block of wood, you can make a characterful carving in less than an hour. It’s relaxing, too, and the charming and quirky results offer a cute payoff in return for a very slight investment of either time or money. A warning, though: this simple hobby can prove addictive.

5

White (for eye highlights)

TIP The grain must be horizontal in this project, mainly because of the tail (which is easily broken off during carving), but it also helps with the legs and snout.

INTERMEDIATE PROJECTS

PROJECT 7 – DOG

YOU WILL NEED Pencil

PROJECT 7

A piece of basswood about 32mm x 29mm x 15mm (1 1/4in x 1 1/8in x 5/8in)

DOG

Carving knife

This dog is a beagle, but the muzzle and tail can easily

be adapted to suit your favourite breed. If you want to change the ears, you will need to decide early on, before you start carving. The Jack Russell–type ears

Brown base

stand straight up, are much easier. Practise by drawing

Lighter brown (for fur detail – mix the brown base colour with a little bit of white)

the dog on paper a few times. The carving itself is fairly complex, but if you’ve completed the bird projects in

Blue (for eyes)

chapter 3, you should be able to manage this project.

Black (for outlines, pupils and features) White (for eye highlights)

Draw a rough outline of the dog onto the longest side of your wood block. Make sure you leave enough space between the tail and the body, because this part can be difficult to cut out. Roughly carve out the outline of the dog. There are three main areas: the front part, below the muzzle; the top part, above the muzzle; and the largest area, around the tail and the dog’s back.

Taper the head and tail sections. Use bold paring strokes to narrow the wood, slicing off the edges. Now we’re going to start defining the legs. Turn the figure over so you’re looking at its underside, and draw out the dog’s footprints as a guide. Make V-shaped notch cuts in between each foot to separate them – just roughly at this stage, because we’ll return to the legs a little later on.

Establish the tail. The tail is much narrower than the rest of the body, so make multiple paring cuts with a spooning or scooping motion, from the top of the tail to the back of the dog, to thin out this section. Let’s return to the legs. Turn the dog over again and expand the separation between each leg, using a series of small notch cuts.

Tiny Whittling is a modern guide to this very ancient craft. Steve Tomashek, whose masterly little figures have won a slew of awards in the US, guides the reader through the basics, showing you the first simple cuts (on root vegetables, to minimize the danger of accidents) to create first a turnip bear, then a carrot mouse. Confidence built, you can graduate to wood, and work through photographic steps, practising each technique with specific projects, and enjoying the increasingly polished results. You’ll learn how to sand, paint and decorate your carvings and the final chapters teach you how to make jointed figures and how to undertake minute groups, from a Noah’s Ark to a forest scene. Steve Tomashek works as an artist in a tiny village in Brandenburg in Germany, indulging the passion for carving in miniature that he’s had since childhood. The Miniature Menagerie, his online collection of enchanting wooden animals, not only showcases his whittling art but also features animated films of the artist at work.

The Darkside Zodiac

April 2016

When you’re born under a bad star Before you buy, look at the title on the cover. What does it say? Darkside. That means you are going to be reading some wince-making stuff about yourself. There are no jolly Brightside platitudes, because there is enough of that kind of thing in the world and every silver lining must have its cloud. You have been warned; anybody who is but a fragile blossom blown by life’s maelstrom had better put the book down now! Turn to The Darkside Zodiac any time you’re feeling dark or when your partner, friends, coworkers, kids, boss or anyone else annoys you. You’ll find solace in the fact that not everyone is perfect in love, work or daily life. Stella Hyde is the author of Darkside Zodiac in Love, Darkside Zodiac at Work and Snarling Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and has always felt that zodiac groupies get off too lightly. She thinks everyone should confront their evil twin. Hyde is a grudge-bearing Cancerian who resides in England.

30-Second Physics tackles the big ideas behind life as we know it, from electromagnetic waves that enable us to connect in an instant from opposite ends of the Earth to the gravity that keeps our feet firmly on the ground. With wisdom and clarity, he guides us through the transformative practice of mindfulness meditation. Richard Gilpin is a counsellor, cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and meditation instructor.
