June 2011

Letter from the Editor This month, I am able to answer a question I have been asked for the past year -- When are you going back on the cover ? Initially I was transitioning into my dual role of Mommy and Executive, so a photo shoot was the last thing on my mind. I decided to welcome the summer with a photo shoot for this issue. I hope that this issue will rejuvenate each one of us as we move into the latter part of 2011. Take time to assess where you have been and where you want to go before the close of the year. If you have been sitting on the fence about starting or growing your business, you have time to make and execute a decision. The holidays will be here before we know, so I challenge each of you to identify three goals you can attain by September 1st and get it done.

Dear Readers,

Hello! This month we bid farewell to the spring and welcome the summer of 2011. There have been deadly floods, storms and tornadoes this year that have devastated cities and towns. If you haven't already, we encourage you to do what you can to assist those in need in these areas.

Enjoy! Brandy Adamson Editor in Chief

Dear Coach,

Dear Cory,

I am trying to get my business off the ground and every time I begin moving forward, I have a setback – not a financial setback, but a setback because of my close friends. They are excited that I want to make more money, but they really want me to stay on my „good job‟ rather than start my staffing agency. I support them in things they want to do – go back to school, purchase a new home or work for a job promotion. I don‟t feel that same support from them. What do I do?

Rejuvenate Your Need To Be Consistent Throughout my career as a life purpose coach, I have continuously been asked, what is one thing that I believe contributes to an individual‘s success? In a word – consistency. When a person is consistent in their behaviors and those behaviors are aligned with and focused on moving into their purpose, success is surely the outcome.

Finding Rejuvenation In Life After Sexual Abuse by Ivy N. Carter 501 (3) (c) organization that helps these victims, male or female, young or old. ALIVE Magazine sat down with Ketra Davenport, founder, and talked about how her organization help individuals rehabilitate their lives and become more productive and positive after being a victim.

Abuse in any form can leave a permanent scar on the life of the victim. They may go through their life wondering why it happened, how it happened and if they caused the incident to happen. Some victims become defiant and begin a series of bad choices including drug abuse, sexual promiscuity and stints of lengthy jail sentences while others close themselves off from the world. Either after effect of assault, the trust in future relationships personal, business or casual is often damaged and unable to be fixed. Some victims even begin abusing others as a way to cope with the pain of being sexually molested, assaulted or abused. Many victims of sexual exploitations rarely find a way to live a healthy life after being a victim. Fortunately for the residents of North Texas there is an advocacy group that helps victims of sexual assault, molestation and abuse. The Life After Advocacy Group, Inc (LAAG) is a faith based

manner. But we reiterate to them that it was not their fault. We allow our clients to just talk about what happened and that‘s how we find out that most of their feelings about the incident or incidences have been suppressed. listen to them without judgment and create an environment that is secure. We understand that trust is a huge factor for anyone who has been a victim of any type of abuse but especially for those of sexual abuse. We are not licensed counselors, although I have a Master‘s in counseling, rather we are the first stop and we set up a judgment free environment and allow the client to talk. When people are ready to talk about the pain of sexual abuse, they shouldn‘t be thrown into a situation with a complete stranger like a counselor who is not emotionally connected with them or their situation. We help them through our H.E.A.R.T. program which is an eight week program where we help our clients Identify, Admit and Accept their abuse. We have one-onone and group sessions and we establish a portfolio for our clients to help them with emotional and mental triggers. We recommend various reading materials and pair them with mentors who maybe former victims or who may act as a guide to them spiritually. Either way our mentors are qualified and matched to our clients based on the client‘s needs and their mentors‘ positive productivity.

Entrepreneur of the Month

ALIVE Magazine is proud to honor and support women who are excelling in their businesses every day. This month we salute and honor Mar-Lynet Knight, fitness instructor, as our Entrepreneur of the Month. Who are you? I am Mari-Lynet Knight from New London/ Uncasville, CT and I am the owner of La Dimora, LLC (The Place in Italian). What is your purpose? I believe my purpose is to create events, activities, experiences that make people‘s lives better. Every day I am growing into own skin, making better choices for my future, and for my family‘s legacy. Why did you want to start your own business? I have always wanted to have my own empire. My dreams as a child was to own a hotel that was suppose to give me Hilton family status. It wasn‘t until 2008, three years after graduating from college, that I realized that it was time to move forward with designing my business‘ future. I wasn‘t happy with the nowhere jobs I was getting and I wanted more for myself. I wanted more for my life. Who is your mentor? I actually have two mentors. The first I have to say is my mother, Shanetta Knight. She is extremely creative and always pushes me to express myself however it moves me. She supports my business with dedication and pride. Her favorite slogan, ―Confidence is free. It doesn‘t cost

you anything to have confidence in yourself.‖ My mother is strong and knows how to stand on her own two feet. My second mentor is Charlotte Williams aka Fairy God-mommy. She has taught me a lot about business. She took me under her wings when I was very young and taught me how to conduct myself in business meetings and how to write event proposals. She opened a lot of doors for me and showed me how to open them for those following me.

What was your „Ah-Ha‟ moment that you were meant to be an entrepreneur? I had a bad day at work. I was working as a temp in the local hospital and the supervisor decided that he no longer needed my services. I could go into how I really felt but there‘s no point in giving him any more attention than he deserves. During my real estate career I didn't notice the trend but I had been researching all along reading as many women in business books that I could get my hands on over the years! Who knew one day I'd realize I had incrementally been studying my passion all along. Once I decided to pursue Women CEO Project, from the overwhelming responses I had gotten from the members, I re-read all of those books, added more research. Spoke to as many female entrepreneurs as I could and just moved forward with starting the group. I didn't worry much about what I didn't know or that I had spent the last eight years in real estate- I wanted to follow my passion and know that by doing so, I will offer these women my best.

I started the Women CEO Project on August 31, 2010. Since then there has been an overwhelming response from our members stating that they feel comfortable. And when you're comfortable, you learn more, you give more and you meet others without feeling intimidated or scared. Women CEO Project charges a monthly membership fee but we have budget friendly options to fit any woman‘s budget because our long-term goal is to be the premier organization for professional business women to go to in order to learn how to strategically plan, goal set, grow their business, connect with like-minded business women, and to expand and increase their vision for themselves and their respective companies. We want women to be able to come to the organization with their fabulous idea, their product, even if

Parenting: From Executive to Executive Mommy

I have shared with our readers that I made the transition from Executive to Executive Mommy in the spring of 2010. To say that this was an adjustment was definitely an understatement. Before my daughter, Kennedy, entered our lives I was very independent. I was focused on growing my business and building business partnerships. I worked crazy hours and traveled a lot but I loved every minute of it. When I learned I was pregnant I had to immediately start preparing to become a mother. I had to slow down. I had to give up some of my favorite snacks, get more rest and establish more streamlined office hours. I knew I would have to make adjustments to accommodate this family addition. While it all was initially overwhelming, I knew if I could successfully run a household and multitask business, then I could in fact become successful at parenting.

I had to grow the team for my business and I had to learn how to delegate. I had to establish consistent business hours and for a few months, I even declined attending certain engagements. When I started making the adjustments of my new baby I did it as if it was a reorganization strategy of sorts because I knew that it was necessary for my family as well as my business. When I saw the ultrasound of her beautiful face for the first time, I realized that I couldn‘t restructure my life from an operational standpoint but from a mommy standpoint. I remember preparing for motherhood. I think I researched every baby product on the market – from car seats and travel systems to infant tubs and carriers. I wanted to be sure that I made the best selection not only from the safety aspect but also durability and longevity. I was overwhelmed – I didn‘t imagine there were that many baby products on the market! For someone who hasn‘t had children, this seemed to be 24

harder than some of the client meetings I have been in. I remember some days my eyes would cross and I would think ‘haven’t I seen this car seat before?’ So, for the soon-to-be moms, I would like to share some of my First Year Favorites. Travel Systems Like many first time moms,

I wanted a cute car seat and stroller. But then the functional side of me began to kick in and I thought – What is going to work best for our lifestyle? I immediately began to research travel systems and knew that functionality over cute was definitely going to be a MUST on my wish list. Travel system, such as car seats and strollers, are perfect for traveling – especially when flying – and great for using on a daily basis. They are also excellent for getting through the airport especially when the gates aren‘t close. The only drawback, which is the case for all strollers, they don‘t fit in the TSA X-Ray machine, so be sure and give yourself extra time to get through security. Tub

There were and still are a TON! Small ones, big ones, themed tubs and the basic. The tub I originally wanted was on back order and I couldn‘t find it anywhere. So she got a themed tub which worked out much better because she could use it longer than she would have been able to use the one I originally wanted.

Now that we have passed the one year mark, we are embarking on a new journey – gymnastics, Baby bag swim lessons, more learning toys Ok, I must admit here I did and books to read. I will continue get a cute baby bag. I kept thinking of all the moms I would see that carried these huge bags filled with everything from diapers, wipes and botCarrier So many to choose from! At tles. I wanted a bag that was functional the time I was researching, there and did not scream were recalls on several brands. I MOMMY! Her diaper went with the Bjorn carrier and bag came from Potloved it! It was quite functional and very user-friendly. I used it at tery Barn and was home, as well as when we were out another great investment. and about. Definitely a great into share those resources that I bevestment! lieve are of value to entrepreneur moms. Breast Pump In a word… Medela!

It‘s all about deprivation and what you can‘t have. Cut this, eliminate that. It‘s about subtraction, saying no. With running you‘re adding a new sport, new friends, and new experiences to your life. You‘re engaging in something human beings have done since the dawn of time. According to evolutionary biologists, the first humans were long-distance athletes, running across the grasslands, stalking dinner. Dinner being some form of lean meat. Health and Wellness think it‘s pretty cool too. When running feels good, it feels great. Of course, when you‘re just starting, it feels hard. Damn hard. Exhausting even. It‘s work. A runner‘s high? You‘ve got to be kidding me.

Do this workout at least three or four times in a week before moving on to the next stage.

For now it‘s going to feel like a major effort. But even while you‘re exerting yourself, know what you‘re doing: Your heart is getting stronger, your lungs are breathing deeper. You may see your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides drop. You‘re building muscles everywhere, especially in your legs, but also in your core due to all your deep breathing. You‘re increasing bone density. Then there are the ―soft‖ benefits: the calm, the sense of achievement, the sounder sleep at night.

STAGE 3: Timing is everything As you‘ve seen by now, this running plan is all about gradual. It takes you from walking for 30 minutes to running for 30 minutes in 12 stages.

As you‘re starting out, you need to run slowly. Very slowly. How slow is slow? Try this: Make your run no faster than your walk. Yes, that‘s right: No faster than your walk. At this point, you have to set side any preconceived notions you have about running. If the Presidential Physical Fitness testing of your youth still haunts you, fear not. No one is standing by you with a stopwatch. This run does not have to be fast, no should if be. In these 1-minute running segments, you‘re not required to cover a set distance.

Stage 3 Workout  Walk for 4 minutes. Run for 2 minutes.  Repeat that sequence four more But just because there are 12 times. stages doesn‘t mean you have to do  End with 3 minutes of walking. it in 12 weeks. You can stretch this program out Do this workout at least three or over the course of 6 months if that four times in a week before moving suits you better. on to the next stage. It‘s common with new runners and exercisers that something happens to subvert their week, and they fall off the wagon. The mistake is the try to climb back on the wagon at the exact same place where you fell off or, worse, to try to increase the intensity without having done your homework. Make sure you‘ve laid the groundwork before you try to build up the interval. When you‘re ready, take it up a notch.

The same rules apply from the previous stage: Stage 2 Workout 1. Go very slowly  Walk for 4 minutes. Run for 1 minute 2. Try not to be huffing and puff Repeat that sequence four more ing. Extra Credit If you‘re used to doing another activity, keep it up! The more active you are, the more calories you burn. Don‘t think that just because you‘re starting to run, you have to quit all your other activities. Runners just call other sports cross-training, and they‘re good for you. They work muscle groups that you might not hit with running and give you a mental break in our routine when you have something different to anticipate. Plus, you might notice that walking and running are already helping those endeavors. Maybe you‘re not exhausted anymore after a long set of tennis. STAGE 4: Sticking with it If you‘re doing these workouts correctly, there is not a ALIVE Magazine

big shift in speed from the walk to the run. You‘re running about the pace of a brisk walk. And you shouldn‘t be getting out of breath. If you are, slow it down. Some people start to jog and get all embarrassed by their slow pace. And their jiggling. But really, you shouldn‘t be shy. People who you think are passing judgment usually aren‘t. If you sense that people are taking a long look at you as you run by, it‘s probably because they admire your effort. You‘re out there doing something for yourself. They wish they had the courage to run.

Stage 4 Workout  Walk for 3 minutes. Run for 3 minutes.  Repeat that sequence four more times.  End with 3 minutes of walking. Total workout time: 33 minutes, 15 of which are running. Do this workout at least three or four times in a week before moving on the next stage. You‘re halfway there! If you can run for 15 minutes at a time, that a big deal. And if you do this work out four times a week, you‘ll be running an hour this week. That‘s probably didn‘t seem too likely a few weeks back, did it? STAGE 5: The race is on! Really want to jump-start your motivation? That‘s right, you. You can enter a race. Sure! Why not?

The rest of us need the carrot or the stick. Or both. We need someone or something watching over us, nagging us, cajoling us into being our best selves. Maybe we need the support of an anonymous online community offering encouragement. Check to make sure at least 500 people enter your race, and if you can find one with north of 1,000 entrants, that‘s even better. The more runners, the merrier. When you have a lot of people are you, you can guarantee someone will be slower than you. Someone will be walking the whole way. Because that‘s the number-one fear of every person who enters a race for the first time: What if I‘m last? Trust us. If you pick a big enough race and run even just a few minutes of it, you will not be last. This is a pivotal week. What‘s going on in this workout? Well, as you‘re doing every week, you‘re increasing the run segment And 5 minutes is a long time to run without stopping. This workout asks you to do that four times. So at the risk of sounding redundant, you‘ll have to approach the run very slowly. You want to be able to get through all four running segments, you can‘t go charging out of the gate for the first one and quit after two. Pace yourself. Also the walking portion decreases this week. If you‘re pushing too hard during the 5 minutes of running, those 150 seconds of walking are going to feel like they‘re over before you‘ve had a chance to catch your breath. So keep the run controlled, really slow down on the walk, and see how it goes.

Don‘t sign up for one happening this weekend. It shouldn‘t A lot of new runners thing be next weekend, either. It could be that running is an exclusive club, a month from now of 4 months or and they don‘t belong if they can‘t even a year, but start scouting. Pick achieve a certain speed. Walk for 2 minutes 30 seconds. Run for 5 minutes.  Repeat that sequence three more times.  End with 3 minutes of walking.  Total workout time: 33 minutes, 20 of which are running. Do this workout at least three or four times in a week before moving on to the next stage. STAGE 6: A jog, not a sprint For awhile—a long time, it seems—we only appreciate exercise when it‘s over. We feel virtuous for having done it, and we‘re glad we pushed ourselves out the door. Whew. Check that off the day‘s to-do list. But there comes a point when the actual ―during‖ portion of exercise isn‘t so bad, either. You‘re out there and you start running, and it feels much easier than you anticipated it would before you started. You feel like you‘ve got a good stride going. In fact, it‘s downright invigorating. It goes by quickly, and you‘re sort of sorry it has to end.

feel. The hope is that soon enough, you‘ll cross over from one of those people who can‘t wait for exercise to end and join the camp of those who can‘t wait for it to begin. With this workout you‘re doing more than 20 minutes of running in each session. The walking is down to 12 minutes. Over last week and this week, the balance has completely shifted in favor of running. Give yourself some credit for how far you‘ve come!

Now You‟re ready to Run Your Butt Off! Here‘s the thing: The more you run, the more weight you lose and the easier it is to… keep running. It‘s hard to get the momentum going at first. But once you get on track, consistent, and committed to your workouts, the more calories you‘ll shed and the less you‘ll weight. It takes effort to pick your feet up and run, and you can go longer. Then you‘ll get a little faster, go a little farther, and torch even more calories. Plus your heart and lungs are better conditioned already. And when there‘s less of you to move, they don‘t have to work quite so hard. You feel better even though you‘re doing more. It‘s a happy circle.

Stage 6 Workout  Walk for 3 minutes. Run for 7 minutes.  Repeat that sequence two more times.  End with 3 minutes of walking.  Total workout time: 33 minutes, 21 of which are running. Make your transformation into a runDo this workout at least three or ner complete. Find the second 6 stages four times in a week before moving of your training plan in Run Your on to the next stage. Butt Off!

Not there yet? Trust me. It will happen. You‘ve probably heard people talking about endorphins causing the famous ―runner‘s high.‖ Scientists still debate the role of endorphins; some think anandamide, another chemical the body produces that the brain feasts on, might be the cause. Whatever the body chemistry reason, many people experience a sense of wellbeing during and after a run. For some it‘s a mild sensation. For others it‘s more intense. Taking the running portion slowly and building up gradually will minimize the discomfort you‘ll 31
