Letter to the Editor

Dear Readers,

I hope that you enjoyed our first print on demand issue. Our team is planning for continuous improvements. We are in the process of setting the publication up as a subscription in the very near future. We hope that you will continue to support us by subscribing. For the next few months, we will be busy as well as myself personally. I have been invited to co-author a book for entrepreneurs that will be released this summer! I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts in this book, The Practicality of Business: Back to Basics.

To all the Mothers I wish continued happiness and peace.

Between writing, meeting with my publicist, interviews and scheduling the book tour, things remain busy but I see this as a milestone for a greater purpose. This was not something I saw happening for a few years yet, but I realize opportunities rarely come in 'our time.' The month of May is National Health Awareness month. As entrepreneurs and executives we sometimes, well more than likely, put ourselves on the back burner. My challenge to you as you read this month's issue is to stop putting yourself and your family in jeopardy. Improve your health, make better food choices and increase your daily exercise. May is also the month we recognize and show appreciation for those that have a matriarchal influence in our life—mother, grandmother, aunt, mature women in our community and extended family; for their guidance, wisdom and support shown to those in the "family unit". Growing up I was fortunate to have the influence of my mother, grandmothers and great-great grandmother as well as extended family. The things that were expected of me and the manner in which I had to 'act' were molded by these great women.

My mother was another influence on my life. She had high expectations for my brother and me and accepted nothing less than our best. The results have been success from the both of us. I find myself repeating some of the same phrases to my daughter that as a child I promised "When I have kids, I won't say that. Apparently, those phrases become innate when you 'cross over' into Mommyhood. To join the ranks of Mommyhood is a great privilege in which all are not able to participate. For me, it has been the greatest privilege and opportunity. When my daughter was born, a little over a year ago, it was such a surreal and quieting moment - I was now a Mommy! This precious, perfectly healthy little girl with 10 fingers, 10 toes and a set of lungs like NO OTHER allowed me this opportunity. I believe that it takes a special person to be a parent. I also believe that children bring out the best in us, helping us to grow and see past ourselves. As I began and continue on my journey through Mommyhood, I am reminded: 1). Don't sweat the small stuff; its really NOT that serious. 2). BE in the moment - minus the Blackberry and laptop – because these very precious moments will never be repeated again at this time and place. 3). Laugh. Live. Love. 4). Make memories! It is now my time to encourage, influence and teach my daughter - proper manners, to be respectful and to display humanity. This is no easy task and yes, I have my work cut out for me but I do welcome the assignment with open arms. To all the Mothers I wish continued happiness and peace. Enjoy your family! One Life To Live: Living Life by Design, Not By Default Out of Strength and Into Power

In our last column, we discussed that many people seek to move into their purpose and make the decision to do so. This isn't something easily decided by the masses. For many this is a life altering experience that brings about fear and anxiety. First, realize that apprehension is normal, but I encourage you to move past that and remember forward movement. Whether it is a huge leap or one step at a time, forward movement is the goal. How do you move forward you might ask? You have to understand your purpose and post it on your mirror, refrigerator, in your office and in your daily organizer - put it where you will see it - constantly. This will keep you focused and aid in affirming your decisions you make on a daily basis.

pose and passion provide financially for ourselves and our families. In some instances this may happen, but not all. Therefore, set realistic expectations - daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly. Keep track of your goals and celebrate your successes - no matter how big or small. Thirdly, remember the proverb 'birds of a feather flock together'? Your environment and those with whom you spend time and share your goals most definitely have an affect on your progress. If you associate with people that are complacent or negative, can they REALLY support you in your progression? Can you REALLY support them? Remember support is a two way street. You want to not only get support but give it as well. Lastly, remember the Law of Attraction. What you think about is what you become and what you speak will occur. Get rid of self doubt, ―stinkin' thinkin'‖ and negativity within. You are a powerful being and able to accomplish all things you set your mind to do.

To your continued success! Next, establish realistic goals. Yes, we would all love to be in an immediate position that living our pur-

You may have even wished for a relief of all the chaos in your life but because of who you are to so many people you keep it to yourself. Oftentimes African American women are the glue to everything, everyone and in every aspect of their personal, professional and social lives. The more roles you take on (the superwoman syndrome) the more likely you become subjected to mental exhaustion and even mental illness such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. Yes, mental illness occurs in Black women and unfortunately, the word mental illness is taboo in the Black community and many women of color who suffer from moderate to severe mental illness go untreated.

Just the thought of being labeled with an illness White women are known to experience keep Black women from seeking the treatment they need despite the warning signs. These emotional, behavioral and cognitive warning signs as listed by the Mayo Clinic may include:

According to Mental Health America (formerly known as National Mental Health Association) a mental illness is a disease that causes mild to severe disturbances in thought and/or behavior, resulting in an inability to cope with life‘s ordinary demands and routines. There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness with symptoms which may include changes in mood, personality, personal habits and/or social withdrawal. Mental health problems may be related to excessive stress due to a particular situation or series of events. Mental illnesses may be caused by a reaction to environmental stresses, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances, or a combination of these (Mental Health America, 2009). Environmental stressors or unaddressed issues can and do often cause you to experience a lapse in your mental capacity which limits your ability to function normally. Depending on the causes of stress, such as a family member, child, spouse or employer, you may decide to continue to allow the stressor to impact your mental and physical health. These stressors often determine whether or not you seek treat-

business? Is job security unsure for you, irrespective of how long you've been employed in your current job? Does it appear as if there's less work to go around? Look around you, is the atmosphere of your workplace a bit more somber than usual?

When you're self-employed, you can't blame any problem on the boss. There is no one to report back to aside from yourself. Yes, there are clients that you've got some degree of duty and accountability to, but in relation to whether or not they're happy or not completely satisfied with your services, you're the only one concerned in that process. There is no such thing as a boss to write you up in case you do poorly and there's no boss to offer you a pat on the back when you do a terrific job. It's just you being accountable for you.

Then it's most likely time to start your own business now.

Ask people who've owned their own companies and they're going to urge you to stop working for other people. If you start your business now, you will have many experiences unlike what you've been expecting. You will notice that being self-employed is tremendously different than working for someone else and it takes much more than just simple desire to be successful. When you work for someone else, you usually have a boss of some kind, a specific set of obligations and you're accountable to others. Your boss is there to lead every piece of the business and your role is secondary at best. However, if you end up selfemployed, you're the boss and you're accountable for just about every facet of your business. Many times, particularly when first starting out, you'll not only be the boss, but additionally, you will be the book-keeper, personnel supervisor, project manager, clerical staff, supplies or procurement officer, in addition to any specific job title you could have for the job

3 Critical Elements to Improving Employees Performance One of the most difficult conversations a manager must ever have with an employee is coaching them when a performance problem exists. Many managers put this discussion off altogether, or handle it ineffectively. As a result, the employee never gets the coaching needed, and performance does not improve. It's important to recognize before you begin that not every performance issue is caused by an employee. Sometimes a managerial issue or organizational impediment could be at the root of the problems. Determine if there is something else that might have contributed to the problem before you begin your discussion. The employee may also be able to provide insight into this during the discussion.

Ask the employee to make suggestions for improvement. This is one of the most critical elements because it engages the employee in finding a solution. Our Health Well- Tamisha Blakeney ―If we don‘t change, we don‘t grow. If we don‘t grow, we are not really living. Growth demands a temporary surrender of security.‖ Gail Sheehy could not have said this better. As women, we thrive on security. We desire it in our marriages, our friendships, our finances and our spirits. Within that security lays an innate drive to be able to say at the end of the day, ―It‘s all good.‖ We want to have it all and be able to do it all but oftentimes, that desire comes with a price we pay and we don‘t even know it. You see, the beauty and goal of being able to say we have it all is to also be able to enjoy it once we get there. Yes, we have a conscious knowledge that we will never really ―arrive‖ because our lives are a journey and not a destination, but at some point don‘t we all just crave to be able to say we are enjoying that journey? The truth is we often won‘t admit we have this thought. If we do, it‘s usually in passing at dinner with the girls or in our silent, screaming thoughts throughout our days. We want it but we just don‘t think it‘s possible. As women, we must learn to cultivate our health well!

I‘m using well in the adverbial sense and the noun sense; the adverb use indicates we must learn the art of creating a sustainable space in our full, busy schedules often, to ensure we stay committed and strong on the journey. No one leaves on a journey unprepared who truly values the destination. As women, it is important to our co-workers, our spouses, our friends and our community that we learn what we need to be able to continually give. For some, it may be an hour-long massage every two weeks. For others, it may be a trip to the lake or a full weekend of shopping alone. Whatever it is for you, learn to cultivate, protect, and most of all, demand it. As the mothers of the Earth, the women among men, and the wives, sisters, daughters, and lovers, we have the right to maintain our health well also. Woman, you and I are reservoirs. We are the wells continuously giving, providing, and sustaining life to all who come to us. But if that well runs dry, what good is it to all who need it? Peace of mind, clarity, freedom, enjoyment and life all flow naturally from the well that is, us. We are a health well, dispersing healing and love to so many, but we must learn to care for that space. Who knows, but that when we do, we could overflow?

of which are disregarded due to the search for the perfect opportunity. It's sad to think that at times we let lose something valuable and wasted the chance. If only one can get rid of this notion, and instead turn every chance into a possible success story, then one can say confidently that chances should not be lost, but rather be converted into successes. Now we ask ourselves where we went wrong and how possibly we can make it right. More importantly, are you ready for such a challenge?

Summer Amnesia: Avoid the Brain Drain Craig Bystrynski

Every child knows the feeling, and what adult can forget it? When the textbooks are turned in and the classroom doors closed for the summer, there's a sweet sense of freedom. But those weeks of fun can have real consequences for learning. Call it the summer slide or summer amnesia: Children lose as much as two months of reading and math skills during that time, according to the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University.

The Entrepreneurs Key to Success By Easther Sudharta

Selecting one item as the Entrepreneurs key to success is far too difficult, and is not congruent with the concept of entrepreneurialism at its core. Entrepreneurs wear many hats, and thus are required to have many skills. However for the purpose of discussion we'll take a look at eight of the top "keys" any entrepreneur would do well to master.

Girlfriend’s Getaway

Snorkeling in Akumal, Mexico It‘s that time of the year again… VACATION! You and your girlfriends have traveled throughout the all of the US visiting the hottest and hippest cities. Now it‘s time to unwind in Mexico.

water itself. Many fish found in this area are not found anywhere else in the world, and have been shown on many travel channel specials in recent years.

Akumal Bay is known for its assorted species of sea turtles which use the beaches for breeding, feeding and rearing their young. This provides an optimal opportunity to see the animals in their natural habitat, including the many different species of fish and plant life.

Casa Cenote is a lagoon featuring mangroves and bright fish displays. Many snorkelers find the fossils in Cenote at Dosojos quite worth while for a day of exploration. Many of the fossils seen at Dosojos date back to original civilizations that once occupied the area.

Snorkeling and scuba diving are perhaps the favorite activities to pursue during a trip to Akumal, but snorkeling is a less physically demanding and technical option. With a brief instruction course and a smart location choice, snorkeling is very easy for even firsttime novices.

Snorkel lessons are always a good idea for firsttimers prior to going to one of these sites. Although the activity is simple, some find that they are uncomfortable with the equipment or unsure how to best view the underwater scenery while safely using the snorkel.

One popular location for snorkeling in Akumal is the Yal-ku lagoon. This location is an extremely rare environment where fresh water meets with salt water from the sea. The combination of the two types of water is called a ―halocline‖ effect.

A fun activity for locals and tourists alike is night snorkeling. Typically, a light is used in conjunction with traditional snorkeling equipment for this activity.

Only very specific species can live and thrive in this halocline lagoon, and the mixture of salt and fresh water supplies creates a changed appearance of the

Many fish which are not observed during daylight hours can be observed when snorkeling after nightfall. This is usually because they are night-feeders or resting during the day. The octopus is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Octopuses only come out to feed at nighttime, and change color when a light is focused on them. Virtually all of the life seen at night is safe for snorkelers, so night snorkeling is a safe activity also. Plant life and some types of fish are also luminescent after dark. This creates greenish lights shining either continuously or flashing at night – quite a view for one who is only accustomed to snorkeling during the day!
