Letter from IWA Past President
Dear Friends,
Educational excellence is a communal project and a communal investment. As you page through this annual report of philanthropy and the school’s financial report, we hope you will be inspired by the number of foundations and individuals who believe in the mission of our school to invest in its future, providing a viable Incarnate Word Academy for many years to come. Thank you to all. The end of the fiscal year, June 30th marks the end of my tenure as President & CEO of Incarnate Word Academy. What a wonderfully enriching experience these years have been for me. I consider myself blessed to have worked with dedicated Sisters of the Incarnate Word, administrators, teachers, staff, Board members, community leaders, alumni, donors, foundations, and friends of the school in advancing our mission to REFLECT Jesus, the teacher. I recognize the human dimension of my leadership, those times when I may not have led in the way that others might have hoped. Much like Chaucer’s attempt to correct the record at the end of The Canterbury Tales, I ask that my shortcomings not be attributed to my lack of desire to have done better, but to my human inability. The mission of our school has the power to transform us to be more loving, more responsive servants of the youth entrusted to us. Dare I say our mission has the ever-present ability to change our world! As we embrace the challenge to understand the dramatic changes in primary and secondary education, the need for a global understanding of community and solidarity, the responsibility of responding to the needs of others, and the role of faith in life and eternity, we hope that you will continue your support of the school. Among the many blessings of our school, the commitment of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and the partnership of the community stands preeminent among them! What a treasure exists in the wider-community of Incarnate Word Academy. Thanks for all you have done to strengthen that sense of community. Upon the recommendation and approval of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament and the endorsement of the School Board Directors, it is a privilege for me to welcome Sammie H. Grunwald as the fourth President & CEO of Incarnate Word Academy. Incarnate Word Academy could not have been blessed with a more competent, collaborative, servant leader than Ms. Sammie Grunwald. May I implore you to offer her the welcome and collaboration you so generously extended to me? Certainly, there remains much to do now and in the future to advance the mission of Incarnate Word Academy. And while surely there are challenges that lie ahead, it is our responsibility—as partners in the mission of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word—to meet these challenges for the continued benefit of our students. By working together I am confident that we will continue to build on the accomplishments of the past, embracing the future with audacity and hope. Praised be the Incarnate Word! Sincerely,
Charles D. Imbergamo President & CEO 4 | 2014-2015 Annual Report
Letter from School Board Chair
Dear Friends,
The 2014-2015 school year was an eventful one for our Academy on many fronts, and the coming year promises much the same. We have many blessings to be grateful for—continued success in academics, the arts and athletics; record levels of giving to our institution, and continued growth for our faculty, staff and administration, among them. Academically, we continued our run of 100% graduation rate and college acceptance for our seniors, and we continued to achieve excellent results at the state level in academic competitions. Our arts programs continue to bear fruit, showing that our investment in a broad curriculum is a wise one, with individuals and groups earning recognition for their expression of God’s gifts. And our athletics program continues to improve, earning IWA honors at the district, regional and state levels. Indeed, the strength of Incarnate Word Academy is not that we strive to be the best at any one pursuit, but rather that we strive to recognize what God has placed within each of us, and nurture that to its fullest. Financially, we continue to make strides in our efforts to be worthy stewards of the resources entrusted to us by our parents, benefactors, and patrons. This year saw improved levels of giving, of reinvestment into our people and facilities, and in financial controls and reporting. IWA recognizes that much is expected of those to whom much has been given, and accountability and gratitude are never far from the minds and hearts of our leaders.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2014 -2015 Rod Martin, Chair Sammie H. Grunwald, Vice-Chair Sr. Michelle Marie Kuntscher ’60, IWBS Superior General, Ex-officio Charles D. Imbergamo, President and CEO, Ex-officio Eddie Buhidar Dr. H. Lestrita Chappell Joe Coco Allen Daehne Tim Ehrman ‘86 Cecilia Garcia-Akers ‘70 Gloria Hicks Sr. Martha O’Gara Dave Thomas Stephen Thomas Sr. Brenda Thompson ‘56
We were blessed this year with growth as an institution as well, as we successfully completed a rigorous accreditation process in which students, faculty, staff, parents and board members were involved. Perhaps the highest compliment paid to us by our accreditation team was their observation of the passion and engagement shown by the entire IWA family in pursuit of our Mission to Reflect Jesus The Teacher. Finally, we were blessed this year by true leadership. After a successful tenure as President of Incarnate Word Academy, Mr. Charles Imbergamo heard God’s calling and made the decision to move closer to family and share his gifts in a new environment. Providentially, both he and Sister Michelle Marie Kuntscher recognized a wonderful replacement in Ms. Sammie Grunwald, a longtime member of the IWA family and an established leader in our community. Ms. Grunwald has the support of the Sisters, and will no doubt benefit during this transition from a deeply experienced Board of Directors under the leadership of another long-time advocate of our Mission in Mr. Tim Ehrman, serving his second term as Chairman of the Board of Directors. As we move into the 2015-2016 school year, there is much to be grateful for—past, present and future—and we are optimistic about the path ahead. Thank you for your support of our institution, and God Bless Incarnate Word Academy !

President’s Circle Incarnate Word Academy’s annual giving society, The President’s Circle, was established to strengthen the Annual Giving Campaign.Through exceptional levels of generosity, our supporters contribute gifts of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund. Many who have directed their philanthropy to scholarships, capital improvements or faculty support/recognition also maintain their annual membership in this important leadership group. In fact, the 2014-2015 President’s Circle consisted of 96 members (a membership increase of 22% from the previous year) who contributed 65% of the total unrestricted dollars raised. Since its inception in 2011, The President’s Circle has helped fund some of Incarnate Word Academy’s most important priorities such as tuition assistance, faculty development and educational initiatives. A huge thank you to those who joined the 20142015 President’s Circle and contributed to the success of our efforts.
