L E TLetter T E R from F R IWA O M President I WA P R E S I D E N T

Dear Friends G

reetings as we approach the seasons of gratitude and thanksgiving! A number of years ago while on retreat, I was thrown off by a comment the director made about prayer, gratitude, and time. It went something like this – the greatest prayer is one of gratitude and often people can’t find the time to pray or even be grateful. And then, the question that has haunted me since: “Isn’t it interesting that people have time to do all the things they want to do and use time as an excuse not to do the things they ought to do?” So, I would like to focus my letter in this annual report on those three themes: prayer, gratitude, and time. We at Incarnate Word Academy remember you often in prayer. Living through the rich history and tradition of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word, we who serve this education mission are keenly aware that we can do little without developing a life of prayerful connection to God. Part of that prayer is to recognize not only those who have come before us, but those who are so present with us through the generosity of their time, talent, and gifts of service, all treasures that enrich us immeasurably. Gratitude is a grace given to those who are consistently aware that no one of us is greater than the sum of the parts. Scripture exhorts us to remember, “For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ [the Incarnate Word].” This oneness with each other, the “harmony, as in that of an orchestra,” recently described by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, is a cause of great joy and deep gratitude in the hearts of those of us in the Incarnate Word Academy community. On behalf of the many who feel your impact, thank you! And lastly, we arrive at time. This is what so many of us seem to have the least of these days. In a world of fast-paced running around, fast food, quick fixes, things made “easier” and more “efficient” through technology, growing cynicism and skepticism from the media to the gossip-mongering neighbor, how does one find the time to be alone, to pray, to recognize the gifts and the Giver? This is something that needs to be the foundation of lessons taught to the young people of today. Developing the competency to be quiet and enter into silence is the ongoing task for each of us. The quality of our modeling and the living of our interior lives will be the greatest witness to the generations of Angels we are forming here. The time that so many of you take to continue to support, encourage, and challenge us is an invaluable gift, and one that is not taken lightly. As we enter into these days of Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas, please know that you are close to us in thought and prayer, that we are ever grateful for your partnership in this incredibly noble task, forming young people who know and love Jesus and who share Him freely with a world so rich in opportunities to be of service!

Be Blessed,

Charles D. Imbergamo President and CEO

Dear Friends

L

ooking back, the 2012-2013 school year certainly continued IWA’s nearly century and a half tradition of excellence in Catholic education. This sustained high performance is the result of the hard work and dedication of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, faculty, administration, students, and their families. IWA continues to graduate students prepared to succeed at the next level. As usual, 100% of the Class of 2013 was accepted into colleges, and they earned a total of $5.7 million in scholarship offers. Parents of recent graduates discover the financial return on their IWA investment in the form of scholarships, college credits earned while in high school, and eager students prepared to complete undergraduate degrees on or ahead of schedule. Our students become well-rounded individuals, benefitting from a great diversity of school-sponsored programs and activities. They continue to excel in multiple sports at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. All of this is built upon a foundation of Christian values, emphasized by being of service in the community. As a parent, it has been a great pleasure watching my children and their classmates mature into extraordinary young adults. I look forward to following their early careers, knowing that they will be leaders in our community and have a positive influence on our culture.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

2012 -2013

Dr. Paxton Longwell, Chair Rod Martin, Vice-Chair Joe E. Coco, Treasurer Charles D. Imbergamo, President and CEO, Ex-officio Mike Lippincott ’81, Chair Emeritus Sr. Michelle Marie Kuntscher ’60, Superior General, Ex-officio Barry Clark Tim Ehrman ‘86 Sammie Grunwald Sr. Juliane Kuntscher ‘55 Frances Mir ‘65 Dave Thomas Stephen Thomas Sr. Brenda Thompson ‘56

Our program of infrastructure improvements continued last year with the completion of the track and field complex, new turf and irrigation for the soccer field, renovation of the high school Strength and Conditioning Center, and middle level cardiovascular fitness room. As always, we appreciate the continued support of the entire IWA community as we work to complete our current Enlighten, Inspire, and Strengthen campaign. The new Montessori building is scheduled to break ground as soon as we can achieve the pledges and payments necessary for phase II of our campaign. During these difficult economic times, we remain mindful of the cost of private, Catholic education and strive to make IWA the best education value in the entire state. Finally, we are thankful that you have chosen to be a member of the IWA family. The Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, faculty, administration, and school board are honored to participate in the education of an amazing group of children. We consider it a privilege and awesome responsibility; and recognize that the Academy succeeds only to the extent that its graduates do. As noted in our mission statement, IWA remains a place “...where the individual gifts of every student are recognized, celebrated, and developed as a reflection of Christ.” It is a great time to be an IWA Angel!

With best regards,

Paxton Longwell

Phase I: Complete! Austin Street Athletic Complex

Blessing and Dedication Ceremony I

t was an important date in history for Incarnate Word Academy. The school welcomed parents, families, students, and friends to its Blessing and Dedication Ceremony of the Austin Street Athletic Complex on February 1. The program began with a welcome by IWA School Board Chair Paxton Longwell, and an opening prayer from High School Level Principal Jose Torres. “At least 500 people were in attendance,” IWA Executive Director of Advancement Connie Cadena said. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by IWA students Isabella Williams, Mary Matl, and Elizabeth Kirkland. Prior to the blessing of the complex, IWA junior Theresa Lopez sang the national anthem while the school band performed. Honored guests included Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey, Ret. Lt. Gen. Marc Cisneros, CEO of the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation, and Rep. Todd Hunter.

The ribbon cutting of the Austin Street Athletic Complex was different than traditional ribbon cutting events. Six athletes representing the elementary, middle, and high school levels raced to the finish line — which, in this case, was a giant red ribbon. Construction on the renovation of IWA’s Austin Street Athletic Complex began October 8, 2012. The complex provides student-athletes with a state-of-the-art facility which includes an all-weather track, batting and golf cages, storage facility for equipment, turf soccer field, zones for track and field events, and new fencing. “This is an exciting time for Incarnate Word Academy,” IWA President Charles D. Imbergamo said. “Our student-athletes work very hard and we are thankful for those who are partnering with us to make this happen.” Renovation of the Athletic Complex is phase one in our larger multi-year, enhancement project called the Enlighten, Inspire, and Strengthen campaign. The projected improvements will range in cost from $4.3 million dollars depending on

increases in construction cost over the next few years. “Today does not mark the end of the of the Enlighten Campaign”, Imbergamo added. “We are going to continue to inspire and dream and work hard, so that Phase II—building the new Montessori school, and Phase III—adding a middle school gymnasium—are realized.” For additional capital campaign details, to become a partner in making this campaign a reality, or to assist in campaign coordinator activities, please contact IWA Executive Director of Advancement Connie Cadena at ccadena@iwacc.org or 361-883-8229
