A LEGACY OF DEVOTION TO FAITH, FAMILY AND CATHOLIC EDUCATION For over 80 years the Kelly family has made a significant difference in the lives of the Incarnate Word Academy school community. With a sense of dedication and devotion to the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and their mission, they have supported and promoted Catholic education “Moggie” at IWA. on he The legacy began with Catherine Grant Kelly, who graduated in 1932 from Incarnate Word Academy in Houston. Following her example, her three daughters graduated from IWA in Corpus Christi: Gerry Thomson in 1952; Elizabeth “Toosie” Morgan in 1958; and Margaret Mary “Moggie” Dreyer in 1962. Her sons, Leroy and Larry, graduated from Corpus Christi College Academy, owned and staffed by the Benedictine Fathers, in 1953 and 1965.

Gerry will long be remembered for her service at IWA as secretary to the high school principal and later as treasurer in the Central Offices. For over 40 years, her warm smile and welcoming spirit touched the lives of all those who came to the Central Offices. In addition, Jim and Gerry Thomson’s children graduated from IWA: Theresa in 1978, Kathryn
in 1981, and Jimmy in 1982. Their grandchildren also graduated from IWA: Lauryn in 2005, Kyndra in 2009, and Kylene in 2011. Raymond and Moggie’s son, Darren, was an IWA high school faculty member for 16 years. He served as baseball coach, Dean of Discipline, and high school teacher of history, world geography and physical education. His children, John Reese and Hallie Campbell, both graduated from IWA in 2008 and 2011; his son, Branden, attended the school until the family relocated to Kerrville. Following in the footsteps of their mother, the Kelly girls have, over the years, been active members of the IWA Alumnae. They have fond memories of participation in the ham dinners, the pounding parties, the rummage sales, and the stuffing of envelopes for mailings. To this day, they continue to participate in the organization’s activities. For many years, Moggie has faithfully served as a contributor to the IWA Messenger publication transition section. She has continued, through her emails, to provide current information regarding health issues and obituaries to the IWA and CCCA alumni, and members of the school community.

to its success.” Each was presented with an “Incarnate Word Academy Gala’s Hall of Fame” plaque. In 1985, Jim and Gerry Thomson joined the Incarnate Word Associates as charter members. Toosie joined the group in 2000. Originally drawn to the Sisters’ ministry and ever faithful in their support, they felt connected to the spirit of the Sisters themselves. Through this commitment, they have enjoyed opportunities to grow in relationship with the Incarnate Word and to welcome God’s presence in their lives and in the world around them. The Kelly girls manifested a deep gratitude for the love and care their parents gave to them. As Toosie explained, “Our parents were simple, faithful, hardworking people, who taught us to be caring, responsible, and committed members of the Church.” “Their examples of strong faith and helping others demonstrated the importance of God in our lives,” added Moggie. “Incarnate Word Academy and the Sisters taught us values and morals, which provided us with guidelines for life,” shared Gerry.

Motivated by the desire to acknowledge the good their parents accomplished, the family established the Catherine “Tad” ’32 and Buck Kelly Scholarship in 2009. “We are so grateful for the love, care, and devotion our parents showed us and for the excellent education we received at Incarnate Word Academy. It is rewarding to know that by helping others with their education, we are continuing the legacy our parents left.” Four generations of the Kelly Family attended IWA

ANNUAL REPORT - 2018-2019 The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation was established in 1989 by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament to provide adequate funding for scholarships and educational development solely for Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi, Texas. It serves as a stable ongoing way of assuring tuition assistance for years to come by providing an entity for receiving and managing the contributions of donors according to their intent. The IWA Foundation is committed to scholarships and tuition assistance grants, faculty professional growth, and quality Catholic education into the future. Inviting the school community, past parents, friends, and benefactors to partner with the Sisters through the Foundation in providing a quality education in a Catholic school environment has been a blessing to all concerned — the Sisters, the IWA family, and the larger community. The 2018-2019 Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Report is presented by the Trustees of the Foundation to express appreciation to donors and to practice good stewardship of the resources entrusted to our care. This report is published separately to recognize the distinction between Incarnate Word Academy and the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation, a funding source separate from the annual financial management of the school. We are grateful to those who have contributed to the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation through scholarships, memorials, and bequests. We ask God’s blessings on you and your families.

2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT IWA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS The Incarnate Word Academy Scholarship Program began in 1978. Scholarships are a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of others and help keep Incarnate Word Academy accessible to as many students as possible. A permanent scholarship is established with a minimum of $10,000 as an endowed fund within the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation. The principal of the fund is invested and a portion of the earned interest is distributed to qualifying students, preserving the principal to generate future awards. Scholarships enrich student life at Incarnate Word Academy and support the school in perpetuity, helping to build ongoing funds to sustain IWA in the years to come. Donors are encouraged to make additional contributions to current permanent scholarship finds in order to increase the fund and earnings amounts over time. Names following the individual scholarships are the donors for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Sister Dorothy Anhaiser Scholarship Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Frederick Helle, Ret. Bequests and Potential Roadblocks Your bequest to the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation—a gift under a last will or trust or through life insurance or retirement plans—provides critical support for IWA’s priorities and initiatives that align with your interests. However, potential problems, both in the estate planning process and during administration, can jeopardize the timely fulfillment of a charitable bequest. Here’s an item to help you avoid these problems: Are your named fiduciaries experienced? The individuals charged with administering your estate will be tasked with marshaling accounts, paying creditors and expenses, liquidating assets, and communicating with beneficiaries, including charities. Naming fiduciaries who have previous experience or other relevant skills may result in a timelier and more cost-efficient process, maximizing the remaining funds meant for the beneficiaries.

The Planned Giving Program provides opportunities for donors to promote and enhance Catholic education at Incarnate Word Academy as part of their legacy. One of the popular and exciting plans that partners use to strengthen our mission is the IWA Forever program. The IWA Forever program gives loyal alumni, families, and friends of Incarnate Word Academy the ability to ensure that their average annual giving continues forever upon their death.
Your Legacy — Endowed Forever
To advance the mission of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in making Jesus known and loved through education, the IWA Forever initiative allows alumni, family, and friends of Incarnate Word Academy to leave a lasting legacy that extends their Catholic education partnership into the future.

A GRADUAL TRANSITION Dear Friends, For the past seventeen years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Planned Giving Program Director. I am grateful for the experience of working with dedicated faculty, staff, and generous donors like you. Your support and encouragement over the years has allowed us, together, to build a program that provides assistance towards advancing the mission of Incarnate Word Academy. Your commitment to Incarnate Word Academy has been a source of inspiration and a tremendous support of our ministry of Catholic education. I am especially grateful to you for your ongoing prayers and financial assistance towards the IWA Scholarship program. I will gradually begin transitioning out of role of Director of the Planned Giving Program, while continuing to serve as the Foundation’s Liaison to the Board of Trustees. I am happy to announce that we have a well-qualified, partner in mission for the position of Planned Giving Program Director, Margot Ortega-Coco. Together, she and I will continue to work as a team to provide an efficient transition.
Margot has contributed many years of service on the Incarnate Word Academy campus as a parent, middle school teacher, and a member of various committees. She and her husband, Joe, have shared their time, talent and treasure with IWA through their annual contributions, their establishment of a permanent scholarship, Joe’s service on the IWA School Board, and Margot’s dedication to the IWA Scholarship Committee. In addition, they have been inducted as members in the Jeanne de Matel Heritage Circle, designating Incarnate Word Academy in their estate planning. During the next few months, Margot Ortega-Coco will begin assuming the responsibilities to become the Director in July, 2020. I hope you will have the opportunity to meet or speak with her at some point during this transition. Please join me in welcoming Margot as the future IWA Foundation Planned Giving Program Director. Be assured of the prayers of the Sisters for you and your family. Sincerely in the Incarnate Word,
Sister Martha Ann Snapka
