Sammie H. Grunwald President & CEO, Incarnate Word Academy
Dear Friends, As we close out one school year and prepare for the next, I hope this issue of The Messenger finds you enjoying a wonderful summer ... resting, reading, and staying cool. Having completed my first year in leadership at Incarnate Word Academy, I feel a special kinship with our graduates whose smiling faces are featured in this issue. From the kindergarteners, fifth graders, and eighth graders whose graduation marked a special milestone in their education, to our graduating senior class who joined the prestigious ranks of the Angel alumni, we are so proud of our Angels.
Congratulating Beckham Benavides upon receiving his kindergarten diploma.
Our remarkable senior class of 47 students amassed more than $3.7 million in scholarship offers and achieved an acceptance rate of 21% to the University of Texas and 21% to Texas A&M University — far exceeding the universities' automatic acceptance standards of 8% and 10% respectively. This vividly illustrates the value of nonranking which ensures that prospective colleges holistically review applications and qualifications for our students. We also celebrated some important milestones this year including Incarnate Word Academy's incredible legacy established 145 years ago by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Thanking Catherine Schultz for her wonderful speech at Sacrament and the 50th anniversary of the Elementary Level's Montessori program. We shared the scholarship luncheon. plans to expand the Elementary Level and construct a Montessori building and announced a generous $1 million gift from Catherine and Robert Hilliard. Their magnanimous gift leads the way for vital fundraising for this final phase of the Enlighten, Inspire, and Strengthen Capital Campaign. Thank you for being part of the IWA community. Your partnership and support is always appreciated and emboldens our mission to reflect Jesus the teacher. Praised be the Incarnate Word! Receiving help on stage at the Gala from Noah Alvarado, Jonathan Deleon, and Marcos Tapia.

STUDENTS FOLLOW THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS Elementary Level students followed the Stations of the Cross during Lent in the IWA Chapel. The Stations of the Cross were led by fifth grade students from Elementary Level's Traditional and Montessori programs. "Participation in the Stations of the Cross allows our students to experience the journey and sacrifices Jesus made for all," Religious Studies Teacher Georgina Mortera said. "The children are learning that each station is and can be lived in our daily lives. Praying the Stations of the Cross helps the children feel closer to Jesus." MIDDLE LEVEL DONATES TO CORPUS CHRISTI HOPE HOUSE Students participated in the Crowning of Mary in May. In lieu of flowers, students brought baby items such as baby powder, bottles, wipes, and bibs to donate to the Corpus Christi Hope House, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter and assistance for mothers and their children in need. MISSION TEAM EXEMPLIFIES JUBILEE OF MERCY During Holy Week, 19 students from the High School Level Mission Team faithfully responded to Pope Francis' Jubilee invitation to explore the dynamic power of mercy as a core attribute of God revealed in the Incarnate Word. In collaboration with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, our Angels had the opportunity to serve 21 refugees — most under 10 years old — seeking asylum. This experience energized the Mission Team's commitment to deploy nine water stations in the Brooks County area and to celebrate Mass in memory of those who perished in the harsh terrain and were laid to rest without name or dignity. On Holy Thursday, an additional 24 High School Level students participated in the local day of service that was also offered in response to the Jubilee Year of Mercy. They rolled up their sleeves to help local ministries that primarily serve the needs of the homeless — the Mother Teresa Shelter and the Salvation Army. At the Mother Teresa Shelter, students replanted garden beds and assisted with preparations for a new storage facility. Other students painted the dining area and kitchen at the Salvation Army which provides transitional housing for intact-families and military veterans experiencing homelessness. A smaller group went to serve people living in the Colonias near Robstown which lacks the infrastructure to provide clean drinking water. Observing firsthand the substandard housing and the overall impoverished conditions, contrasted with the dignity of those living in those conditions, brought new meaning to the works of mercy for our missionaries. MONTESSORI PROGRAM CELEBRATES 50 YEARS Students, parents, families, former Montessori students, alumni, and friends celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Elementary Level-Montessori program in January. The week-long celebration included a Mass, classroom activities, parade, and reception. Middle and High School Level students cheered on the Elementary Level-Montessori students as they paraded around campus with pom-poms and signs with quotes from Maria Montessori.
In 1965, IWA launched the first Catholic Montessori school in Corpus Christi. The school's Montessori program provided an innovative, individualized, child-oriented education for children from the ages of two and a half through five years. The Montessori program was expanded in the early 1990s at the request of parents to include students through grade five. Today, IWA offers two tracks of elementary education, Traditional and Montessori, for children age three through the fifth grade. View photos online at iwacc.org/publications
FAMILIES ENJOY A NIGHT OUT Elementary Level families were invited to join the fun on the school's playground in April for a Family Fiesta! Families brought lawn chairs, toys, and coolers full of drinks. The food trucks on site, Munchies and Bookoos, provided great food for the evening, while a DJ from Latin Productions pumped out tunes for everyone's enjoyment.

To better serve our students as a college preparatory school, IWA does not rank its students. This means a student's college potential is not automatically determined based on rank alone. The absence of a ranking number on a student's college application requires the college to make a holistic assessment of the student's application and potential based on the entire application package including courses, grade point average, essays, SAT/ACT scores, activity resume, and more. Students, who might otherwise have been overlooked with a ranking system, are able to rise to the top in college acceptance consideration with this holistic review. With this in mind, we are grateful to announce that, again this year, our High School Level students achieved a 100% college acceptance, reflecting not only their individual gifts, but also the strong reputation of IWA as an outstanding college prepatory school. The graduating Class of 2016 achieved acceptance to a wide range of schools including large state universities; in-state private and religious universities; nationally recognized private universities; and small, private universities. Over 600 guests attended Incarnate Word Academy's signature fundraiser, Paradise Island Gala, at the American Bank Center in February. It was truly a special Gala with the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament being recognized as the 2016 Paradise Island Gala Honorees in celebration of 145 years since they opened the doors of Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi.
Edward Hicks and William Charles Layton joined their grandmother, Gloria Hicks, on stage as she was honored for her years of service as Gala Advisory Chair. During her tenure, Mrs. Hicks was instrumental in raising over $800,000 in net proceeds!
The event featured five specialty auctions including a live auction, a silent auction, three specialty bid board auctions, and a car raffle. Stephanie and Brent Bottom won the 2016 Paradise Island Gala raffle and generously donated the 2016 Nissan Sentra back to the school to increase the net proceeds. Melanie Villarreal Jennings '96 and Paulette Guajardo were honored for serving as 2016 Gala Co-Chairs, and were recognized for spearheading such a successful Gala.
Edward Hicks and William Charles Layton thank their grandmother, Gloria Hicks, for supporting their school and showing them how to be a giving member of the community.
The unrestricted funds raised at Gala, combined with the dollars raised through the Annual Fund, will directly support the Educational Initiatives Fund. This fund bridges the gap between tuition revenues and the actual cost of education, benefitting every student and faculty member at IWA.
Sammie H. Grunwald thanks co-chairs Melanie Villarreal Jennings '96 and Paulette Guajardo for a wonderful event.
IWA would like to thank the many partners in mission — the 2016 Paradise Island Gala Committee, generous supporters, student, faculty, and staff volunteers. Through our partnership with you, we can continue to provide the quality Catholic educational experience for which Incarnate Word Academy is known. View photos online at iwacc.org/publications

THE MESSENGER
BOARD SPOTLIGHT
Rosie Cortez HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU SERVED ON THE IWA SCHOOL BOARD? This was my first year as a member of the school board. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO SERVE ON THE IWA SCHOOL BOARD? My love for the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. They played a big role in my life and who I am today as well as in my son's life. My way of contributing back is to help continue the mission the Sisters have put forth. To reflect Jesus the Teacher: to continue to provide IWA as an environment where each student is recognized, celebrated, and developed as a reflection of Christ. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR EDUCATION IN THE IWA COMMUNITY? My vision for education at IWA is to continue to maintain an environment where the student develops both academically and spiritually. IWA will not only continue to provide high academic standards, but also assist the students to excel in developing high core values based on faith and service. Recognizing the gifts God has given us strengthens our faith and helps us be more Christ-like in whatever path our lives follow.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Facundo "Jay" Vasquez Jr. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU WORKED IN YOUR PROFESSION, AND HOW MANY AT IWA? I formerly taught for 38 years in public schools. I'm currently in my fifth year at the High School Level. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION? To some educators, teaching is a profession. To me, it's a vocation — a calling to become part of something of great significance. I strive to share in the Church's mission, to do the work of Jesus, to reach out to others, and to spread the good news about life and its purpose. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT IWA STUDENTS? Their enthusiasm for their faith. They start out the day with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. They look forward to attending Mass and they sing and clap to the liturgical songs. They pray quietly and passionately and trust in God and love their faith.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Kristina Leal ‘06 HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR IWA EDUCATION HAS INFLUENCED/BENEFITED YOU? Education is the backbone of a community and develops our future leaders. While attending Incarnate Word Academy, I was challenged to exceed expectations every day. In addition to a dedication to high standards of performance among teachers and students alike, IWA also taught me compassion and the value of service to others. I have taken these values with me into my adult life, and they have led me down the path I walk today. All of my professional experiences have pushed me to grow and strive to be better, for myself and for my community. WHAT PERSON/FACULTY MEMBER MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE WHILE AT IWA? While she was not a teacher of mine, Sister Catherine's loving nature and dedication to the students was very impactful. As she walked the halls each day and worked the bookstore after hours, she always had a smile to give and an ear to lend. No matter what the issue, the students knew they could turn to her for guidance and encouragement. SUMMER 2016 | 27
