WINTER 2021
RICH LEGACY, FORWARD VISION with Sr. Martha Ann Snapka
You’ve been a part of IWA for a long time. What does the school mean to you? My first encounter with Incarnate Word Academy was as a second grader, with the gentle, caring Sister Damian Ordener as my teacher. Throughout my elementary and high school years, I had the wonderful experience of having Sisters of the Incarnate Word as my teachers. They were kind and attentive, professional and competent. They had high standards and expectations of their students. From the beginning, I felt at home. Shortly before my senior year, I joined the convent and graduated while in training and formation. Becoming a Sister of the Incarnate Word has been a rewarding experience. The Sisters have believed in me and offered me numerous opportunities for leadership and service. After 11 years of teaching in parish schools, I was assigned to Incarnate Word Academy, where, from 1966 to the present, I have served in
teaching, administration and leadership. I have been a part of Catholic education on the IWA campus for 60 years. Over the years I have had the privilege of touching the hearts and minds of the young and of challenging them to live up to their potential. Having the experience of working with the dedicated and supportive school community of administration, faculty, staff, and parents, alumni and friends has been a blessing for me and I am truly grateful. What are some of the most important moments in the growth of the school that you remember? One of the significant moves we made was to go coeducational in 1975. Corpus Christi College Academy, the Catholic high school for boys, had closed its doors in the early 1970’s. With no Catholic high school in the area available for boys, this decision for a coeducational program gave boys the opportunity of continuing their Catholic education. It also brought innovative changes to class offerings and sports and provided balance in community leadership preparation. The second enhancement was the formation of a school board in 1994 with membership including the Sisters and lay persons. Continued on Page 2
Rich Legacy, Continued from Page 1
This move invited lay persons to share in the governance of the school and to serve as partners in promoting the mission and ministry of quality Catholic education at Incarnate Word Academy. This new dynamic was a logical step in answering Vatican II’s call to expand collaboration and shared responsibility. A third important move was the establishment of the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation in 1989. The Sisters launched this initiative to provide adequate funding for scholarships and educational development for IWA and a stable ongoing way of assuring tuition assistance for years to come. The Foundation is committed to scholarships and tuition assistance grants, faculty professional growth, and quality Catholic education into the future. As the former Planned Giving Director for the Foundation, why is planned giving so important for the growth and future of the school? In our ministry we are dedicated to bring about a Christian wholeness in each person and a Christian unity among all. Through the decades Catholic education has produced strong leaders in the Church and in the community. Planned Giving is critical for the growth and future of Catholic education because it provides the means for ongoing funding for scholarships and tuition assistance for students desiring a Catholic education as well as professional growth for faculty. It invites members of the school community to choose how they wish to make a difference with their resources in the lives of students; to practice Christian stewardship, and to encourage funding of Catholic education into the future. As you retire in this role, what are your plans and who will follow in your footsteps at the Foundation? I will continue to work with the Sisters’ retreat facility for young people, the Fannie Bluntzer Nason Renewal Center (the Spirit Center) and it is with a spirit of deep gratitude and a sense of strong confidence that I pass on the torch of forward Foundation growth to Connie Cadena. Connie has been a devoted member of the IWA Advancement Team for 27 years. I know that with her considerable experience, competence, and dedication to the Incarnate Word Academy mission and ministry, she will enthusiastically commit her time and energy to promoting excellence and expanding access at Incarnate Word Academy and strengthening Catholic education well into the future. What are your thoughts on the future of IWA? It is vital that we nurture and encourage the young in developing their potential and of learning leadership and service skills to contribute in their homes and their communities into the future. I would encourage all who are a part of the IWA school community, to continue to promote the value of Catholic education, to witness as a strong faith community caring for and compassionate to others, to practice Christian stewardship building on the foundation of those who came before us and who “dug those wells and planted those gardens” that we now enjoy, and to be the face of Jesus, the Incarnate Word, to all.

ANNUAL REPORT - 2020-2021 The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation was established in 1989 by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament to provide adequate funding for scholarships and educational development solely for Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi, Texas. It serves as a stable ongoing way of assuring tuition assistance for years to come by providing an entity for receiving and managing the contributions of donors according to their intent. The IWA Foundation is committed to scholarships and tuition assistance grants, faculty professional growth, and quality Catholic education into the future. Inviting the school community, past parents, friends, and benefactors to partner with the Sisters through the Foundation in providing a quality education in a Catholic school environment has been a blessing to all concerned — the Sisters, the IWA family, and the larger community. The 2020-2021 Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Report is presented by the Trustees of the Foundation to express appreciation to donors and to practice good stewardship of the resources entrusted to our care. This report is published separately to recognize the distinction between Incarnate Word Academy and the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation, a funding source separate from the annual financial management of the school. We are grateful to those who have contributed to the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation through scholarships, memorials, and bequests. We ask God’s blessings on you and your families.

2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT IWA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS The Incarnate Word Academy Scholarship Program began in 1978. Scholarships are a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of others and help keep Incarnate Word Academy accessible to as many students as possible. A permanent scholarship is established with a minimum of $10,000 as an endowed fund within the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation. The principal of the fund is invested and a portion of the earned interest is distributed to qualifying students, preserving the principal to generate future awards. Scholarships enrich student life at Incarnate Word Academy and support the school in perpetuity, helping to build ongoing funds to sustain IWA in the years to come. Donors are encouraged to make additional contributions to current permanent scholarship finds in order to increase the fund and earnings amounts over time. Names following the individual scholarships are the donors for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. ANNOUNCING OUR NEW DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation will continue to grow and flourish under the direction of Connie Cadena, who recently assumed the role of Development Director. In this integral role, Connie will work collaboratively with the IWA Advancement Team to expand fundraising efforts and individually with friends of IWA to grow the endowment that helps sustain IWA’s future. Prior to joining the IWA Foundation, Connie served as the school’s Executive Director of Advancement and helped secure millions of dollars for various campus projects. She was instrumental in the successful completion of major gifts and capital campaigns that constructed the Kenedy Math and Science Center, the Hilliard Montessori Building, renovations and naming of the Sister Catherine Café, Casper Wenzel Court, Longwell Family Foundation College and Career Guidance Center, and the Austin Street Athletic Complex. When she is not fundraising, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. Connie’s commitment to continuing the legacy of IWA, as a cornerstone of the Catholic school community, motivated her to take on a new role after so many years. She values the unique relationships that she has developed with IWA’s stakeholders and feels confident that her longevity as a dedicated partner in mission will ease her transition into this new role. As Connie states, “Having the right person in the right role creates the best opportunity for the right results.” Here’s to her success, and the many “right results” ahead. Please join us in welcoming Connie to this new position!
