Hello! My name is Kurniawan Halianto, or people usually call me Iwan. I’m a graduate from Bina Nusantara University, School of Design and currently a freelance graphic designer. In these four years, i have been learning various kind of designs such as web design, packaging, layout, and many more. But one thing that catch my interest the most is branding. It has always been fun to brainstorm, searching for the best possible answer for the problem. I really enjoy experimenting with design elements so i can always learn something new every day. Here are some selected works from my college and freelance projects. I hope you might find it interesting and maybe we could do a project together in near future. Enjoy!

VISUAL IDENTITY

PERSONAL BRANDING PERSONAL PROJECT 2016

I finally decided to create my own brand identity. Although sometimes i experiment on crowded design, but personally i feel happier in simple and clean design. The keywords i’m using here are simple, elegant and professional. Why simple? Because somehow i tend to find the simplest solution in my work. I also learn to pay more attention to details to create professional design looks. The logo was made from line to form a letter “K” as in my initial. It has a balanced looks but also dynamic at the same time.

I used navy blue and light brown as the main colors in order to create professional yet elegant identity.The pattern was created based on the logo and applied in the stationeries. Lines are the main elements of my identity. It created a light and calm personalities in my design.

BLACK LEMON INTERNSHIP PROJECT 2016

The Bowmann is a hotel group in Jakarta. It has a unique identity as a group of hotel family. The branch hotels are Tyler and Morrisey, each created with their own personalities as children of Bowmann. One of the facilities in the new hotel is a bar and i was assigned to make one concept to be submitted along with other designer in Brownfox Studio. It got rejected in the end but i think it’s worth to see.

So the concept is to create an effortless, cozy, yet classy. The logo was made to look like a handwriting to give an effortless look.

I tried to make it as effortless as possible, so combine a handwriting element and monochrome photo throughout the design. These photos are some items you would easily find in a normal bar. Because it also serves as a coffee shop in the morning, i tried to make it to be casual so people won’t hesitate to swing by to enjoy a cup of coffee.

PESONA ANYAMAN KELUMBI C0LLEGE PROJECT 2015

Kelumbi is name of a village in Kalimantan which is inhabitated by Dayak Kelumbi tribe. They are known for their handicraft, Kelumbi’s Webbing. This is a beautiful webbing with color combination of red, black, and light brown, all colored with natural dye. This project is a group project to make a social campaign, trying to make people interested in buying this webbing. The logo was made by my friend and i did the stationery, brochure, and some mercendises. The big idea is “Tak Kenal Maka Tak Sayang.” We embraced them to know more about Kelumbi Webbings, the crafting process, and how beautiful they actually are.

These are the Creative Process book that was made in order to explain about this whole project. There are also a badge and a coaster i designed as merchendises. The brochure itself explain about Kelumbi’s Webbing and the crafting process in general.

EVER GREEN FREELANCE PROJECT 2015

Evergreen is a newly starting insurance company which offer their client a cheaper cost. The client wanted to create a visual logo that would seem reliable, longlasting, and of course, professional. Therefore, i did some brainstorming and came up with this idea. One thing that would last long for me is the nature, and in this case, a tree. And after sketching some possible solutions, my choice goes to this simplified hexagonal tree symbol. I decided to us a nature-like relaxing green color. People would be able to feel safe when looking at this shape and color.

The logo can be easily applied to any supporting media. The stationery uses the combination of green and white to give a relaxing and calm vibe. The logo itself have a great legibility even in monochromatic color or small size. Stationery consists of namecard, envelope, letterhead, and cd cover and label.

PUSPA IPTEK SUNDIAL COLLEGE PROJECT 2014

Puspa Iptek Sundial is a Science Learning Centre located in Pahrayangan, Bandung. The name Sundial comes from its building which is shaped like a giant sundial. In fact, the building is the biggest sundial in Southeast Asia. It is facilitated with various kind of science props to support learning activities inside. The main objective of Sundial is to help children have fun in learning science so they would be able to look at science differently. For that, i tried to make the identity as fun as possible. The logo was created from the shape of colorful atom combine with a rocket to show that fun science is our main concern.

These are the brand guideline i created to explain how the brand should be used. The most important thing is to keep the fun image of Sundial. They need to stick to happy and cheerful photos for any signage. The color scheme need to be maintained as is.

MONSTEE C0LLEGE PROJECT 2014

Monstee is an entrepreneurship project as well as a charity project. The concept is to create cute monsters character those share something they have to others. For example, we made a fur monster who share his fur to help cold people, an eye monster who share his eyes, an so on. This is a group project, but my job is to create the logo and the monsters illustration. With children and teenager as the main target, we printed this monster on t-shirt and then sold it. Personally, i really like this project because it teaches something to people.

We created different identity for each monster. They all have a name and different personalities as well as assign unique quotes originally from us for them. We used soft colors so it would easily attracts children as our main consument. To keep the soft tone, we only made the shirts in white color.

This is one of my Typography project where we were assigned to choose one proffesional job and make a namestyle out of it. Considering my interest in games, i choose to be a game designer, a modern game designer to be precise. I did some experiment with controller image but in the end i decided to use my nickname and shaped it like a face of a monster. The letter “w” act as the teeth while the letter “i” and “a” act as the eyes.

I keep it clean and simple to show it’s modernity and professionality. Gray to show modernity while yellow and blue show the fun part.

The stationery set consists of business card, letterhead, and envelope design. The teeth from the logo is used as supergraphic in these stationeries. I used blue, gray, and white as main colors.

CHIOU THAU FINAL PROJECT 2016

This is my final project in the university. My topic is about Chinese Marriage of Cina Benteng or usually knows as “Chiou Thau.” This marriage is unique because it’s not purely based on chinese tradition but has been acculturated with local tradition as well. These combination creates a new tradition, uniquely found in Indonesia. The main problem is that young generation these days starting to forget the essence of this tradition. My purpose is not to bring people back to the old days, but to educate them so they would understand the essences and try to adjust it to the modern circumstances. That way this tradition would survive without losing it’s values.

I decided to create a book with illustration as the main element. The illustration style i use is chinese painting like the ones you would find in old chinese scripture. The purpose is to bring a traditional vibe to my design, so people would find chinese identity fhere but in a fun way. The cover was made by gold foil and emboss finishing to empasize usual chinese look.

I also created promotional items for marketing purpose. There are teacups with chinese illustration, chinese envelope for marriage with dragon and phoenix gold foil, postcard and button badges. Each of them uses red as main color, and other complementary color such as brown, blue, and yellow. I made a poster series based on some rituals explained in the book to capture the interest of readers.

There are also usual promotional items like x-banner, polo shirt, flyer, chinese fan, keychains, ad totebags. They all use illustration as the main visual, supported with chinese letters to give a traditional chinese looks. Main visuals in the illustrations are dragon, phoenix, boat, and Three Gods in old chinese culture.

Still working with The Bowmann, this time i was assigned to create a company profile for them. This is purely an editorial work because the illustration was made by another designer an my main job is to create an layout to fit their elegant and casual identity.

THINKING ART NEWSLETTER C0LLEGE PROJECT 2014

Thinking Art is a design newsletter that talks about design globally, about how experts show their point of view about design. The contents were taken from a book with the same name. Considering this is a design newsletter, i thought about using post modern style to do the layout. This is the first time i experiment on this style and seems like i overdid it a little with the elements. But overall i think it conveys what i want to say pretty clearly.

MY JAKARTA MAGAZINE C0LLEGE PROJECT 2013

My Jakarta is a magazine focusing on story around Jakarta such as Kota Tua. The target audience is citizen of Jakarta with age around 20-25 years. The main theme of this edition is Kota Tua and Sepeda Onthel. Knowing the history behind, i decided to create quite a black and white layout, combined with modernity of orange as the colour i feel resemble Jakarta the most.

This is a personal project of mine as a gift for someone. There is a card game called “Love Letter” which contain 8 figures of people. The idea is to recreate this figures with the illustrations of my friends. Each one was assigned with a job which suits them the best. I also made some modification regarding these jobs to create a solid story concept.

I made two versions of cards. One is a set of card to be collected contains only name and job of my friend, and another set to be played contains illustration and description of their ability in the game. My purpose is to give a personal touch in a group game for my closest ones, uniquely made for them.

REDESIGN TEH CAP BOTOL SLAWI C0LLEGE PROJECT 2014

Teh Cap Botol Slawi is one of Indonesia’s oldest tea and well known for it’s low cost. The original packaging use a paper which is folded to shape like a box. The problem is, considering the age of the product, the packaging itself need to be renewed in some aspect. Therefore, our project is to create a new packaging that would help Teh Cap Botol Slawi compete with other brands. Moreover, we need to add 2 more variants into the brand.The variants would be Jasmine, Rose, and Hibiscus tea. The concept is to picture every variants in their mood color, as well as showing one animal that represents the variant.

WEB DESIGN

WORKEE FREELANCE PROJECT 2016

Workee is a final project of my client who went to Prasetya Mulya School of Business. The idea of this website is to create a freelance platform only for college students so they could start learning to work professionally in real world as well as gaining an income for theirself. It would be a benefit for them to compete with less professionals so they could train theirselves. There are various kind of field offered in this website such as design, copywriting, accounting, and much more. The design concept is to create a friendly and professional looks so people would easily trust the system.

I also created a mobile platform design for this website. There are 2 platforms available, one for college student find jobs, and the other one is for clients to find any kind freelancer they need. The user interface was made to assist user to easlily browse available jobs and freelancer. Blue color is for freelancer platform while green is for the client.

APP DESIGN

DECIDE C0LLEGE PROJECT 2014

Decide is a mobile app, or maybe closer to a mobile game, where users are able to play games to claim for free discount vouchers. Not only for free vouchers, users can also use this app to monitor any deals offered by their favourite brand. For this version, we endorsed Magnum to promote their new White Almond Ice Cream.We made two games which are a simple ice-cream-catch game and a monopoly game where the users able to play online or with their friends. This is a group project and my part is to make the logo and interface for Profile, Vouchers, and Coins.

SUN GUK KONG C0LLEGE PROJECT 2014

Sun Guk Kong is a flash interactive game i created in my fifth semester. The concept is a half-monkey-half-dog creature who loves bananas and always hungry. Therefore, the players need to feed him with as much banana as possible and try to get the highest score.
