BRANDING IDENTITY

Branding 01 Identity Branding is not a logo. Branding is a person’s gut feeling towards a product, service, or company. Simply put, branding is what people feel when they come into contact with you or your service. This feeling is built by conveying your core values to the audiences through various medias, such as logos, marketing collaterals, interior design, advertisements, and so on. Therefore, what’s important is not the logo itself, but the concept it represents.

This is a short summary on my working steps. Basically, what’s important is to map the problem correctly because unless you understand the problem, you won’t be able to create the right solution towards it. Opening

To achieve the state of serenity, your mind and body need to be balanced. And in Bali, where hinduism they believe there is thing called chakra flowing in your body to maintain this balance. The symbol in this alternative was inspired from the Triquetra symbol combined with the lotus shape. Triquetra originally meant “triangle” and was used to refer to various three-cornered shapes. The symbol is formed by two upside-down triangles which represent the balance. There are many meanings in history, different religions, and spirituality that reference triangle / triquetra that are Mind, body and Soul.

where you could finally spend quality time with your family or friends. We invite the customer to take everything slowly, and enjoy their precious time, to take it back when life wasn’t so fast, where family would sit together in a hut near a riverbank, fishing while sharing all the warmth and love. That’s how we want them to feel. This place offers not only a beatiful scenery but also a child-friendly space where there is swimming pool, small bar, and live music. The concept of flowing is what we use, a flowing water in the river with fish swimming in it.

The mascot is not attractive enough while the logo and other identity could not represent a fun and modern science centre. So the idea is to create an identity with brand values which are fun, educational, and modern. These values are implemented into a new visual logo of a scientific, colorfur rocket which symbolized an endless learning spirit towards something new and a cheerful learning which shown in the process.

Kelumbi is name of a village in Kalimantan which is inhabitated by Dayak Kelumbi tribe. They are known for their handicraft, Kelumbi’s Webbing. This is a beautiful webbing with color combination of red, black, and light brown, all colored with natural dye. The problem is, this product need quite some time to be made and therefore would affect the price. People know this thing as an “expensive item” and hesitate to buy it. This project is a group project to make a social campaign, trying to make people interested in buying this webbing. The logo was made by my friend and i did the stationery, brochure, and some mercendises. The big idea is “Tak Kenal Maka Tak Sayang.” We embraced them to know more about Kelumbi’s Webbing, about the making process, and how beautiful the webbing is.

So as mentioned above, we need to find a name suitable not only for a bar but also for a coffee shop. Thus, we chose Black Lemon since it has a mysterious yet interesting vibe in it. The branding was planned to be simple, straighforward, but with a small twist. That’s why I chose to use typography with a touch of photography. There’s a casual vibe in it.

EDITORIAL DESIGN

Editorial 02 Design Talking about editorial design, it’s more than just creating beautiful visuals to be seen. In design, there are things called legibility and readibility. One is about how a text could be easily read, and the other is how a text could attract attention from the audience. And in editorial, both are important. We have messages to be conveyed, yet if nobody wants to read it, it means nothing. Creating balance, and consistent layout through the editorial is one of the key to achieve a strong identity.

33

Kurniawan Halianto Design Portfolio 2019

Design Methods 01 // identifying materials 02 // understanding the objectives 03 // understanding the audiences 04 // creating basic layout system 05 // executing visuals

Understanding the objectives of the editorial is important to know what kind of visual you would need. What typeface, color, images, shapes, size and so on. Even understanding how and what kind of printing will be used sometimes affect the design itself. Opening

The rituals include a symbolic tradition of “combing” which represents that the child they always look after are now ready to become an adult, and started his/her own family without having to bother their parents anymore. There’s also a ritual of feeding the child for the last time as when the child marries, they are no longer supposed to depend on their parents, it’s the one last time they will be pampered. ILLUSTRATION WORKS

Illustration 03 Works Designers illustrate to convey a message, not merely draw what they like at the moment. Designers are different from artists. We have certain objective to be achieved. I’m not saying that i’m a professional illustrator. But there are no right or wrong in illustration, it depends on the situation and the audience you try to approach. Yet a good designer should be able to understand basic design principles to be implemented into their drawings, such as colors, balance, contrast, and so on.
