Panthertown Valley Don’t get scared! Panthers don’t live in Panthertown Valley, at least not anymore. What you will find is an abundance of waterfalls, swimming holes, hiking trails, and quiet destinations. In this popular 6,700 acre popular portion of Nantahala National Forest, originally named for the large number of “Painters” or Eastern Cougars, the area is now home to more wilderness-loving people than Painters. Even though the Cougars are extinct, it is still possible to find rare kinds of plants and animals. Some of these only exist in the tea colored water of the high elevation bogs that dot the landscape throughout the valley. Panthertown is a great location for families due to the close proximity of hiking trails to waterfalls. The hikes are easy, but make sure to bring a map. From Asheville, take I-240 W to I-26 E to Asheville Airport, Exit 40. Turn right onto NC 280, and follow for 16 miles to Brevard, NC. At the intersection with US 64/276, continue straight. When 64 and 276 split, stay straight on 64. Follow 64 for 15 miles to the intersection with NC 281. Turn right and follow for .8 miles, and turn left on Cold Mountain Rd. Bonas Defeat Gorge Not for the faint of heart! This hike is for the most experienced and adventurous hikers. The gorge was formed by the Tuckasegee River and the flow is now controlled by a dam at the top. There’s a faint trail, but don’t be deceived, find someone who’s been before, and ask them to lead you through this wonderland of river potholes, secluded swimming holes, and all around adventure!

Coleman Boundary (Big Ivy) On the other side of the Blue Ridge Parkway destination of Craggy Gardens, there’s a lesser known section of Pisgah National Forest. If you’re looking for trails ranging from easy to difficult and is away from the crowds, this is the place for you. Along the 8 mile road to the top, you’ll see roadside waterfalls as well as Snake’s Den, a lesser known rock climbing destination. At the end of the gravel road begins the Douglas Falls trail, an easy 2 mile hike that leads to a 70-foot free falling waterfall. If you’re up to it, it’s a strenuous 6 mile hike from Craggy Gardens parking lot into Coleman Boundry (Big Ivy) below. Walker and Staire Creek run through this steep section of the mountains and are dotted with private swimming holes. After your forest jaunt, stop by D and D’s restaurant, near Barnardsville for some delicious Southern food. From Asheville, take I-26 W for 11 miles to Exit 15 (Jupiter/Barnardsville NC 197). Turn right towards Barnardsville, and follow NC 197 for 6 miles. Turn right onto Dillingham Road. Stay on this road as it winds through the valley and turns into Forest Road 74, a gravel road at the entrance of Big Ivy.

One of the top tourist attractions every year in South Carolina is the Greenville Zoo. A 14-acre facility, the zoo is home to some of the most unique wildlife in the region and offers educational programs for visitors of all ages. Among the wildlife at the zoo are giraffes, monkeys, giant tortoises, and elephants. There is also a Reptile Building with lizards, frogs, turtles, and snakes. SC Aquarium With so many activities to choose from, a day at the SC Aquarium in Charleston will keep everyone busy! There are more than 60 exhibits located throughout the Aquarium that focus on five major regions of the Appalachian Watershed. Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the Upstate, look no further than the Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve in Spartanburg, a community supported urban garden. The garden has grown to become a beautiful woodland preserve that provides a home for wildlife and a display for nature’s beauty. The Garden is open every day of the year during daylight hours and there is no charge for admission. Displays include the Butterfly Garden, Thomas W. Bartram Trail, Conifer Collection (with 200 species), and the Garden of Hope and Healing. The Garden has incredible history dating back to 1969, when Josephine and Harold Hatcher decided to retire to Spartanburg. From their small backyard they saw the wooded area behind their

house was covered with tall pines, mature hardwoods, even a stream. The land itself was badly eroded, and had become a dumping ground for local trash, but even so, the Hatchers saw its potential. The Hatchers started filling in the eroded gullies, amending the soil, building paths and ponds, and planting over 10,000 trees, shrubs, and flowers. The community continues to keep the Garden booming, and the location has become a lovely tourist attraction. Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is located at 820 John B. Riverbanks Zoo The Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia is home to more than 2,000 magnificent and fascinating animals and one of the nation’s most beautiful and inspiring botanical gardens. The 170-acre site features dynamic natural habitat exhibits, scenic river views, spectacular valley overlooks, and significant historic landmarks. Riverbanks attracts more than 850,000 visitors each year and has a non-profit support society of more than 30,000 memberships. Asheville Urban Trail Take a self-guided tour/walk along downtown Asheville’s Urban Trail, and you’ll learn all kinds of interesting tidbits about this eclectic mountain town’s history! This is Asheville’s “museum without walls” and it consists of 30 different bronze sculptures around downtown, shedding light on its unique history. The “Energy Loop”; the Deco Gecko in Pritchard Park; the murals in the City Hall chambers; the bronze life-size sculpture of Martin Luther King, Jr. at MLK Park; the diverse sculptures and plaques along the Urban Trail are all part of Asheville’s public art collection. The 1.7 mile walk begins and ends at Pack Place; maps are available at the Asheville Visitor Center and Pack Place. The tour will take approximately 2 hours. Smith-McDowell House Museum Built by one of antebellum NC’s most influential citizens, the SmithMcDowell House was once the home of mayors, a Civil War major, and friends of the Vanderbilts. Its history runs deep. Rescued from destruction, it’s Asheville’s oldest surviving dwelling and is a National Register property — a window into 19th century life here in Western North Carolina. With tours and exhibits offered throughout the year, the Smith-McDowell House is brimming with interesting history. This summer, a special lecture series, “Civil War Comes to the Mountains,” will be held on June 9 at 2 p.m. The Series continues with a lecture entitled “A Place of Their Own: The Young Men’s Institute and Black Social Uplift in Post-Civil

Shindig on the Green
Now in its 46th year, Shindig on the Green is a fun mountain tradition that celebrates the Southern Appalachians’ best traditional mountain musicians and dancers. It’s held throughout the summer on Saturday evenings and is completely free! This year’s dates are June 30, July 7, 14, 21, August 11, 18, 25, and September 1. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Train buffs, tourists, and families alike will all enjoy a ride on the historic Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. This 53-mile scenic railroad travels over the Smoky Mountain landscape, through two tunnels and over 25 bridges. The railroad was built in the 1800s by convicts and opened WNC to goods, products, travelers, and salesmen from the northeast. The Railroad was utilized until the mid-80s and was bought by the park in order to preserve the history and heritage of the rails. This summer, there are a number of fun events happening. The museum will kick off its 2012 season on May 26 with a special family and veterans’ event. Train trips depart at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The museum operates on 5 miles of the 11.5-mile line of the former Rockton and Rion Railroad. The eastern terminal of the line is at the junction with the Norfolk Southern Railroad at the Rockton Station. The line runs generally westward through the Rion community to Anderson Quarry, home of the world famous blue granite called the “silk of the trade.” The museum features: • An hour long train ride that can be enjoyed from a first class dining car, a historical passenger car, a caboose with a real cupola, or the newly restored open air car. • An array of static display cars including the Guinard brick flat car, various diesel engines, and Baldwin steam engine 44. • A walk through display train featuring the 100-year-old Norfolk business car, a Southern Post Office car, Nickle Plate caboose, and more.

Moonlight Movies, Greer, SC The Moonlight Movies series in Greer, SC, returns in 2012, and with the lineup of movies scheduled, it should be a packed house every night! The series kicks off May 24 with the Harry Potter finale. Disney Studios has extended its licensing agreement for public showings, allowing the city to expand its offerings this year with such films as The Lion King and Aladdin. The movies are held every Thursday night in the City Park Amphitheater. It includes Martin Scorsese’s film Hugo, which recently earned five Academy Awards. Lake Jocassee One of the most popular lakes in South Carolina every year continues to be Lake Jocassee. And why not? The lake was built in 1973 along with Lake Keowee, its sister lake, as part of the KeoweeToxaway project. The dam on Lake Jocassee, which is 385 feet high, impounds four rivers, and the discharge becomes the Keowee River arm of Lake Keowee. The lake is eight miles long and covers 7,565 acres. Lake Jocassee is best known for its trout fishing. Lake Jocassee is a beautiful mountain lake that is surrounded by pristine undeveloped and government protected land. The water is crystal clear and cold even in the summertime. Wildlife is abundant around the lake, and you may even see a black bear or possibly an American Bald Eagle. There is only one public park on Lake Jocassee — Devils Fork State Park — located just off of SC Highway 11. This park provides about anything you can think of for a great lake trip. There are several boat ramps, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Devils Fork State park is also the starting point of the famous Foothills Trail. If you visit Lake Jocassee, you should definitely stop by Hoyetts store on the way. It is located on the same road as the state park. They know all about the lake and where to go for camping, hiking, and fishing. Also, Hoyetts offers boat tours, boat rentals, fishing guides, and a ferry service for hikers and campers. Tri-County Boat Rental also offers great deals on rentals, which will get you on Lake Jocassee for a day of fun. At Devils Fork State Park, admission is $2 adults; $1.25 for seniors; and age 15 and younger are admitted free. Gates open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. In addition the park offers: • Paved boat ramps and parking for cars with trailers, offering boaters convenient access to scenic Lake Keowee for water skiing, sailing, and some of the best fishing to be found anywhere. Restrooms are located in the landing area. • A 150-ft. dock for loading/unloading boats • Over 7 miles of shoreline and rugged terrain • 3 public shelters for group outings each complete with water lights and large grills • Picnic sites, each with table and grill, and 4 play areas, 2 with playground equipment, 1 basketball and volleyball court • Park store featuring limited grocery items and camping items, firewood, drinks, and snacks. Some attractions close by are Hagood Mill, an 1825 grist mill near Pickens, the Calhoun Mansion in Clemson, the Pickens County Museum in Pickens, and a number of spectacular waterfalls. SC Festival of Flowers The 45th renewal in 2012 opens June 2 and runs to June 24. The main days of events will be June 21 - 24. The festival was named one of Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events for the last five years and also one of the top 100 events in North America by the American Bus Association for 1996 and 2001. The fourth weekend of June will prove to be most entertaining for all ages. The Park Seed Company’s famous Trial Gardens, featuring more than 1,000 annuals, perennials, and vegetables will be open to the public on Flower Day, June 23. Enjoy other Festival activities such as the boisterous bluegrass and a new outdoor garden party concert. PGA Championship The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina already has a rich history. The course has previously hosted the Ryder Cup and Senior PGA Championship. Now, in August, the Ocean Course will host the 2012 PGA Championship. The event will feature the world’s top golfers, including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, and many more. Spring Water Festival When August rolls around in Williamston, SC, it’s time for the Spring Water Festival at Mineral Spring Park. This year’s event will be held August 24 and 25. The two-day festival will be held rain or shine and all events are free. Activities include arts and crafts, live music, a Gospel music showcase, free children’s activities, amusement rides, Spring Water 5-K Run, 1-mile fun run, antique car and fire truck shows, and wonderful food. Musical acts include Mac Arnold and Plate Full O’ Blues, Tom Fisch, and the Royal Scotsmen Band. Music will be performed from 6 to 10 p.m. on August 24 and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August 25.

Mac Arnold recently returned to a live touring schedule. According to his website, Mac Arnold’s first band included James Brown on piano. Mac moved to Chicago and Muddy Waters hired him on the spot. He toured and recorded with the Muddy Waters Band and recorded LPs with Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker. Mac moved to Los Angeles and produced Soul Train with his friend Don Cornelius. He even played bass on the “Sanford & Son” television show when he wasn’t playing bass for Otis Redding and B.B. King. Arnold’s band includes Austin Brashier on guitar and vocals, Max Hightower on keyboard, Dan Keylon on bass and vocals, and Mike Whitt on drums. This is one musical act you won’t want to miss! Williamston was named for West Allen Williams, who discovered a natural mineral spring on his property. The town developed around this “miracle” mineral spring, whose water was believed to have healing properties and made the town a popular health resort in the early 1800s. US Cycling Championships The best cyclists in the nation will once again compete in Greenville on Memorial Day weekend in the 2012 USA Cycling Championships
sponsored by Greenville Hospital System. All racing events are free and open to the public, with many activities for fans. Racing opens on May 26 with the Time Trial and Road Race Championships, presented by Duke Energy. The race starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research campus and will be 20.7 miles. Estimated finish time is about 1:30 p.m. There will also be a US Handcycling Series starting at 8:30 a.m. The big racing day is Memorial Day with the Road Race Championships. The race will be 115 miles and starts at noon. Awards and a ceremony will conclude the weekend event. The race will finish at South Main and Camperdown Streets in downtown Greenville. Mighty Moo Festival When the first Mighty Moo Festival was held in Cowpens, SC, in 1977, organizers weren’t sure how successful the event would be. According to the town’s website, the Cowpens Bicentennial Committee in 1976 decided that the next town festival would be called the Mighty Moo Festival, in honor of former crewmen of the USS Cowpens World War II aircraft carrier. But that first year, more than 1,500 people showed up to honor the USS Cowpens crewmen, and the event has been growing every year since. Now a 4-day event, the 2012 festival will be held in downtown Cowpens from June 13 - 16. The event features street dances, great food, a golf tournament, beauty pageant, a baseball game, an arts and crafts sale, and the Mighty Moo Parade. The festival is a celebration of the town’s history and honors veterans and crewmen of the USS Cowpens CVL 25 and the USS Cowpens CG63. You can also check out the history of the town.
