well-maintained landscape is important to many homeowners. In addition to adding to a home’s aesthetic appeal, a lush landscape can also help increase a home’s resale value. Oftentimes, homeowners without much experience tending to lawns and gardens hire a landscape architect to do the job
for them. First-time homeowners on the lookout for a landscape architect should consider the following tips to make the most of that process. • Find a professional who will work with you. Though you might not plan to do any of the landscaping or gardening, that doesn’t mean you won’t have a vision of what you want the property to look like. A landscape
• Look for a professional with some experience. A landscape architect should be ready and willing to discuss his or her previous work experience. Ask to see photos of previous work or even local addresses where work was done so you can see the finished product in person. Landscape architects without extensive work histories aren’t necessarily unqualified, but homeowners should weigh the projects such architects have completed considerably. • Discuss subcontractors. Some landscape architects will handle the
project entirely on their own, while others might subcontract part of the project. Determine who will be performing the project and how the hiring of subcontractors might affect the cost of the project. • Discuss fees and get a fee schedule. How the project will be paid for is an important thing to discuss when interviewing landscape architects. Each contractor might have a different fee structure, so you will want the one that’s best suited to you. If a series of payments will be made, get a fee schedule so there’s no confusion down the road. • Get references. A professional landscape architect should have a list of references at the ready

for potential customers. When contacting references, be sure to ask how satisfied they are with the finished product and how the project went with regards to scheduling and fees. When talking to a previous customer, also ask how amenable the landscape architect was to their ideas and how much he or she involved the homeowner in the project. • Make sure the contractor is licensed. In many communities, landscape architects must be licensed. ike most people selecting a career path, or career change, one incident usually can be the springboard. For Randy Attaway, site manager at Clayton Homes of Anderson, that was the case. A few years ago, Attaway was helping his mother select a new factory-built home, and he wasn’t very happy with the process or service he received. “After helping my mother and seeing how lacking the service was that she received, I joined the industry to help make it better,” Attaway said. ainting is one of the least expensive, quickest, and easiest ways to immediately transform the look of a room. With a change of color, any space can immediately take on a new personality. Choosing the perfect color for a room is important. There’s no right or wrong color, it’s simply about homeowners finding the right hue for them. While it may be tempting to follow the trends, sometimes the “in” colors simply do not mesh with a homeowner’s design style. In such instances it’s best to go with what feels the best. Choosing colors that impart a certain mood can also help create a dramatic, comforting, or energizing space. Certain families of colors say different things and can create a particular atmosphere. Here are some common colors and what they can do for design.
Green
Red
If the desire is for a relaxing, allnatural retreat, green may very well be the color to choose. Green’s connection to nature makes the shade refreshing and soothing to the eye. It can instantly create a calming effect in any space and homeowners need not worry about going overboard with shades of green. Complementary colors to green include shades of red and pink. Use this accent color in draperies or on prints. Fill a vase with magenta-colored blooms and add a special pop of color.
An energizing and dramatic color, red demands attention. It’s stimulating and provocative, and some people love an entire room of red. However to others, red can be overwhelming. But red can be used on an accent wall or sparingly to spruce up a neutral color scheme.
Blue Another calming color is blue. It can make a room serene and soothing. Blue is a cool color, which means it can also be used in abundance with little worry. Make a bedroom a quiet retreat with the right shade of blue. A touch of orange or peach blends well with blue.
Purple This color is often relegated to a girl’s room, but purple is elegant and regal and can add a touch of romance to a room. Individuals torn over painting with red may want to try the drama of purple, which is a bit more subdued and mysterious.
Yellow There are few colors more uplifting than yellow. This hue is reminiscent of a bright, sunny day. A dark house can be brightened by painting a room in a soft shade of yellow that will reflect any visible light. From bedrooms to bathrooms to kitchens, yellow is a versatile, illuminating shade.
Orange Another vibrant color is orange. This hue can be captivating and friendly and also brighten up dull spaces. Orange adds energy to a room, so it may not be best for bedrooms or other calming retreats, like a den. Homeowners needn’t paint a room pumpkin to get the full effect of orange. More subtle shades, like apricot or terra-cotta, can also add the power of orange.

How to fight insects the eco-friendly way
Skip the bug zapper. Some natural products are effective at repelling pesky insects.
E
njoying the outdoors when the weather is pleasant can become bothersome if biting insects are part of the equation. However, not everyone wants to rely on chemical repellents to keep bugs at bay — especially when it comes to preserving their lawn and garden. There are some greener options that may be adequate for most daily situations.
Biting Insects Mosquitoes, biting flies, and other insects can be a nuisance when the weather warms. Though many bites create a mild reaction that subsides after a few days, some insects are harbingers of serious diseases. Malaria and West Nile virus are just two of the many maladies that can be hiding inside of the common mosquito. According to Mosquito.org, only female mosquitoes feed on blood
and bite their victims. The males feed on plant juices and nectar. Females need blood to feed their eggs and reproduce. When a mosquito bites, she injects chemicals to prevent blood from clotting and reduce pain. Afterward, however, these same chemicals can cause topical irritation. Like mosquitoes, female tabanids, or horse and deer flies, also bite. Most prefer warm seasons and the warmth of daytime, but some species are most active at dawn or dusk. Tabanids bite deep and hard, potentially causing a lot of irritation. Especially in early summer, swarms of small black flies can make life difficult for those who venture outdoors. Again, females of this species bite, but males may hang around and swarm when a female is nearby. Black flies need running water to feed larvae, so they differ in this respect from mosquitoes and other insects that grow from larvae in sitting water. Biting occurs during the day and may intensify before a thunderstorm.
Repelling Insects The standard bug repellent is one that contains the product DEET. It was originally developed in 1946 for military use, but some have questioned its safety. The EPA says it has been associated with seizures in children, but this claim hasn’t been fully substantiated. Still, many people prefer to look elsewhere for their repellents, preferring natural products. There are oils that can be extracted from different plants and herbs that provide short-term protection against many biting insects. Citronella is one of the more effective natural repellents. It has been used for more than 50 years as an insect repellent and as an animal repellent. The oil is taken from dried, cultivated grasses. Pure citronella is most effective against bugs, more so than the synthetic varieties used in many candles. Citronella is safe for human use and produces no threat to the environment when used correctly. It is generally applied to the skin and may cause mild irritation if used
in abundance. Because some people find the smell of citronella off-putting, it can be mixed with lemongrass oil to minimize the smell. Lemongrass may also be another natural insect repellent. Rosemary and cedar can also be tried as insect repellents. These are two other aromas that bugs find offensive. Individuals who spend time in the yard may want to plant rosemary nearby in garden beds to help repel insects in that respect. Rosemary is also multifunctional, as it is commonly used in cooking. Other safe items to try as insect repellents include: • sage • mint • neem oil • bay leaves • eucalyptus • cloves Individuals can experiment with these herbs and oils to produce a product that works for their repellent needs. ■ metro creative connection
Keep kitchen clean to avoid germs
C
onsidering the nature of a bathroom, people generally think that most germs reside there. However, kitchens tend to be the most germ-filled room in the average home, and many kitchen items and surfaces can harbor bacteria and viruses that make people sick. Although the average toilet bowl has 3.2 million bacteria per square inch, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
frequent disinfecting and cleaning of the bathroom helps reduce germ infestation. According to health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola, there could be up to 200 times more fecal bacteria on your kitchen cutting board than on your toilet seat. Even a kitchen tabletop contains an average of 344 bacteria per square inch compared to 295 per square inch for a toilet seat. Unless people are considering
cooking and eating meals in their bathrooms, it may be time to examine the germ-ridden areas of the kitchen and start cleaning.

Disinfect a sponge in the microwave for 30 second to a minute or run it through the dishwasher. Use one sponge for dishes and one sponge for cleaning the kitchen to prevent more crosscontamination.
Kitchen faucet and surfaces: Using dirty hands to turn on the water in the kitchen can make grime and germs collect on this surface. Use a disinfecting product to clean the faucet, countertops, and inside of the sink frequently.
Drains: Not all of the water in a drain seeps out. This moist area, usually enhanced with bits of food or other organic material, provides a ripe environment for germs to grow and thrive. Baking soda is a good freshener and cleaner that is also relatively safe for the environment. Use it to disinfect drains and remove odors. Continued on page 9

Window guards can prevent accidents
T
he weather is warming and that means windows are being opened to let in fresh air and warm breezes. The advantages to open windows are many. But one particular disadvantage is the safety hazard open windows present to young children. More than 5,000 American children are injured each year after falling out of windows, says the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Twothirds of these children are toddlers, and a quarter of all injured are hurt seriously enough to require hospital admittance. Montreal Children’s Hospital says they treat roughly 10 children a year who have fallen from a window. Due to toddlers’ high center of gravity (a head that is particularly heavy), most topple
over and land head-first, which can have devastating effects. Falls from windows can cause serious injuries and even death. However, the accidents are largely preventable. Many recall the tragic 1991 incident when musician Eric Clapton’s son, Conor, fell to his death from an apartment 49 stories up in a Manhattan highrise. Conor, age 4, allegedly darted past a housekeeper who had left the window open after cleaning and fell out of the window. The song “Tears in Heaven” was subsequently written by Clapton for his son. Children are often insatiable in their curiosity and desire to see what is happening in the world around them. Goings-on outdoors can be fascinating, and it is not far-fetched to see children leaning up against windows and screens to get a better view of outdoors. A window screen can easily dislodge and provides no barrier from a fall. 5 signs your roof might be wearing down

eplacing a roof is a costly venture few homeowners look forward to. According to Remodeling magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, the national average cost of a roof replacement is nearly $22,000, a costly endeavor considering the tenuous nature of the economy. What’s more, homeowners who choose more upscale roofing materials can expect to spend almost $40,000 on their roofs. Such costs make it no small wonder that many homeowners fear the dreaded diagnosis that their home needs a new roof. While there’s little homeowners can do to reduce the cost of a roof replacement, there are warning signs homeowners can look for that might indicate a roof replacement is on the horizon. Recognition of these signs can help homeowners be more financially prepared should the day come when the roof needs to be replaced.
1. The presence of algae If the roof has lots of dark streaks and stains clinging to it, that is likely algae, which can grow on the roof for quite a while. Algae does not necessarily do any
damage to a roof, but it does do some damage to a home’s physical appearance, as algae on the roof is not very pleasing to the eye. Such figures should be enough to motivate men and women to start saving, not only for retirement but for an unforeseen event like a layoff that could put finances in serious jeopardy. There are ways men and women can save money that don’t require too much sacrifice.
Pay extra each month on loans. If paying extra money each month sounds like an odd way to save money, keep in mind that paying ahead on loans can substantially reduce the amount of interest that accrues over the course of the loan. Some loan agreements include prepayment penalties that actually penalize customers for paying ahead. But if the loan agreement has no such penalties, sending a little extra each month reduces the loan’s principle faster, meaning borrowers will pay less in interest and pay off their loans faster.
Shop sales. Shopping sales is a simple way to save, yet many people still don’t take advantage of sales. Whether grocery shopping, shopping for home furnishings, or adding on to your wardrobe, shopping sales is a great way to save substantial amounts of money. When visiting the grocery store, sign up for the store’s club membership, which in many cases automatically earns you sale prices as long as you remember to swipe the club card before paying. When shopping for clothes, peruse the clearance racks,
especially at the end of the season, when stores simply want to get rid of items and, as a result, mark them down heavily. The items will still be wearable next season, and you will have saved a lot of money without doing much work.
Re-examine existing insurance policies. An insurance company is not liable to call you and offer lower rates. However, a consumer often finds his or her company is willing to lower rates for those who initiate the conversation. For example, motorists who have gone a significant amount of time since their last speeding ticket or traffic accident can often renegotiate their auto insurance policies and earn a lower rate. Some companies will automatically lower these rates, while others need some prodding. Oftentimes, the threat of cancellation is enough to motivate a company to reduce insurance costs. But policy holders won’t know unless they try. If the company claims there’s no wiggle room, start shopping around for a new company, and don’t hesitate to jump on a more affordable policy, even if it can be a hassle to change companies and policies. Another thing to consider when examining insurance policies is if the level coverage is still necessary. Maintain proper humidity for comfort, safety

umidity can affect how comfortable a person may feel outdoors. However, humidity also affects indoor comfort and the condition of items inside the house. Maintaining proper humidity levels is important. Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Too much humidity can make the air feel thick and make it hard to breathe. Too little humidity can cause static electricity and dry out the skin. Many people prefer moderate levels of humidity. According to experts, optimum humidity is between 30 and 60 percent. Anything above or below those percentages can make indoor spaces seem uncomfortable and contribute to certain health problems or deterioration of household structures.
Dry House Concerns While it would seem a dry house would be ideal, low humidity can cause shrinking and other issues with wood, including causing gaps or loose floor boards. It also may contribute to cracks in plaster or drywall. Eventually pests may be able to enter the house through these points and cause even more destruction. An overly dry house also can be a fire hazard. Static electricity and dry conditions may prove problematic. In terms of health, a dry home can cause skin irritation and dryness of the respiratory system, leaving a person more susceptible to illnesses.
Wet House Concerns On the opposite side of the spectrum, a damp house is not beneficial either. Humidity can expand and warp wood in the home and cause peeling wallpaper. Dust mites and other allergens love high humidity conditions to spread spores. Many types of insects seek out humid conditions to thrive. One of the biggest concerns with a humid home is the proliferation of mold and mildew. If there is more than 60 percent humidity in the house the conditions are ripe for mold to grow. Mold can attach to and grow on any number of surfaces. It spreads well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabrics, and upholstery. The Institute of Medicine has found sufficient evidence to link exposure to damp indoor environments in general to upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough and wheeze in otherwise healthy people and with asthma symptoms in people with asthma.
Controlling Humidity Homeowners can determine humidity levels and help regulate it by first purchasing a hygrometer. This is an inexpensive meter found at most hardware stores. Go from room to room to determine areas that have improper humidity levels.
High humidity can be remedied by some methods: • Move plants outside. • Avoid aquariums or other water features inside. • Check for and remedy pooling of water around the foundation of the home. • Open windows frequently to ventilate rooms. • Consider purchasing one or more dehumidifiers to run in troublesome rooms. If low humidity is the problem, consider these options. • Have a variety of houseplants around inside. • Consider a fish tank as a focal point and a source of evaporating water. • Consult with an HVAC professional to see if a humidifier can be added to the heating and cooling unit in the home. • Use room humidifiers to moisten the air. • Hang clothing and towels indoors to dry. • The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Company states that warm air is able to hold more moisture than cold air, which is one reason humidity levels often fall during the winter months. check with a big company, he didn’t hesitate to start his own business when the time was right in 2002. “I always wanted to try running my own business at least one time,” Batson said. “I figured if it didn’t work out, I’d go back and get another job. But running a business myself was always a goal of mine.” Fortunately, the business has worked. Business has been steady for the past 10 years. “We started really strong the first four or five years,” Batson said. “When the economy slowed, we felt it like everyone else. But we’ve been able to keep a steady customer base. It’s all about pricing in this line of work. We offer fast service and good prices.” Batson and his assistant will finish most work within two to three days. The top-selling items despite service repairs are tractor attachments and mini-excavators. They also have a

Staggered doors: Doors that don’t line up with one another are effective when soundproofing a home because sound waves that move in a circular fashion from the center of the sound will have barriers and won’t travel as easily from room to room. Insulation: Adequate insulation in attics, walls, and other areas can not only keep heating bills down, but also are effective at reducing noise.
Carpeting: Although the current trend is toward hardwood floors or tile, these materials may contribute to noise in a home. Carpeting and padding will buffer against noise, especially if it’s the sound of footsteps overhead on a second level of the home. If carpeting is not desired, consider the use of well-placed area rugs or runners with padding that will absorb some of the sound in rooms. Wall hangings: Bare walls deflect noises back into the home. Items on the walls, such as framed artwork, tapestries, shelving, quilts, etc., absorb sound waves or dissipate them, reducing noise throughout the home as a result. Furniture: Plush furniture also reduces noise much better than an empty room. Experts suggest that rooms have at least 25 percent of some sort of noise absorbing material, like furniture or wall hangings. Extra drywall: If noise travels easily from room to room, it could be due to thin walls. Extra insulation or an extra layer of drywall can help remedy the problem of noise between walls. There are also acoustical paints that can be applied to walls to minimize sound. Curtains: Thicker draperies will dampen sound better than blinds or shutters. Consider using them if noise is an issue. Noise is a problem in many homes. old and mildew thrive in dark, warm, and wet areas, which makes bathrooms prime territory for these unsightly substances. Learning about the conditions that are conducive to the growth of these fungi can help homeowners keep mold and mildew at bay. Mold and mildew can grow on just about any surface, including wood, glass, tile, grout, silicone, porcelain, and many other materials. Perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth include areas with poor or low air circulation and ventilation, low lighting, high humidity, dampness, and warm temperatures. Bathrooms generally meet this criteria therefore mold and mildew are commonplace in bathrooms. Mildew is a form of mold. Health experts say mold can cause asthma, sinusitis, and other breathing problems. Others claim it may lead to more serious health implications, such as cancer, immune-system disorders, and memory loss. However, research has yet to determine if there’s a connection. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates there are between 50 to 100 common indoor mold types that have the potential to cause health problems. Mold and mildew can also make rooms smell bad and musty, while the appearance of mold can mar a normally attractive-looking bathroom. These substances tend to spread quickly, so it’s up to homeowners to get it under control before mold and mildew become a problem.
Control humidity. Humid conditions breed mold and mildew. Open a window before and after showering and bathing, or turn on the exhaust fan and let it run for a while to clear out the humidity.

Wipe down the shower walls. Use a squeegee or a wash cloth
to wipe down damp walls and the tub to remove excess water.
Use bleach and vinegar. Bleach and vinegar inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Use a cleaning solution of vinegar and water, which is less caustic than bleach, or mix five parts water to one part chlorine bleach to clean bathroom surfaces. Use a stiff-bristled brush or old toothbrush to get into grout lines. If there is mold growing in the corners of tile where the tub meets the tile, soak a cotton ball in bleach and place in the corner. Remove a few minutes later and rinse.
Saltwater soak.
After cleaning shower curtains in the washing machine, soak them in a saltwater solution to prevent the growth of mold and mildew in the future.
Use special paint. Fungus can grow on the paint in a bathroom as well. Use a special mildew-resistant paint in areas prone to moisture. Create a designer look on a budget
I
nterior designers have a knack for pulling together furniture and accessories to create rooms with widespread appeal. But not every homeowner has the resources to hire a professional to help turn their interior from drab to fab. Fortunately, it doesn’t always take a pro to transform a home’s interior.
The key to creating a beautiful room is planning Designers do it and so should you. Measure the dimensions of the room and create a sketch of the area using graph paper or computer software. Be sure to plot any windows or doors on the drawing so you’ll be aware of obstacles. Homeowners unsure of what they want should browse through magazines or pictures on the Web for inspiration. Search for key phrases that describe your design style, such as Tuscan, farmhouse, country, colonial, etc. Then read up on the components of these styles that define it. This will help you select items that fit with your personal style.
Create a design board Once a particular style has been chosen, create a design board just like the professionals. Cut out swatches of fabric, select paint swatches, find magazine pictures that fit with your goal, and arrange them on a piece of poster board. See how the items work together. If you are unsure of colors, see which shades were used in the inspiring picture and determine if it will coordinate with your home.
When designing, identify or create a focal point in the room and build off of that. This may be a large window, fireplace, or even the entertainment center if it’s a family room. Place furniture around the focal point and then move outward.
Keep scale in mind It’s also important to keep scale in mind. Large walls or tall ceilings will create plenty of wall space. A small print or wall hanging will be lost in such an area. Be sure to choose furnishings and accessories that fit with the scale of the room. In other words, a huge sectional may overpower a small living room.
Choosing colors When choosing colors, make sure they are cohesive. Research the color wheel that artists use to help with designing the room. Some colors are complementary or opposites and still work together. Homeowners nervous about color should choose a color from fabric or furniture and use a few different shades of the same color in the room. Select an accent color that can be used on trim or as a spot of color on a pillow or accessory.
What to put on the wall... When plotting wall hangings or other décor, odd numbers often look more pleasing to the eye. Experiment with different sizes of framed artwork or different shaped accessories for visual appeal. For example, a few rectangular shaped items with a circular clock and a conical flower vase can mix it up in the room. This is where looking at magazine layouts can be extremely helpful.
Use a magazine picture as inspiration for your room, then select similarly shaped and scaled furnishings that mimic the look for less money.
Copying the look Many stores sell items that mimic the look of higher-priced items. When copying a designer room, select pieces that are similar, but not necessarily the same brands. Consider shopping at second-hand stores or antique shops for discounted pieces. With a little new fabric or stain, many items can look like new again. Shopping on-line also may enable shoppers to find items more readily and see how they look in staged rooms.
Think outside the box When designing, it never hurts to think outside of the box. Items that were intended for outside may work well inside as well. Hanging lanterns or plant stands could be put to use in a rustic room. Save some money by making some items yourself. For instance, if you cannot find a particular throw pillow or drapery that fits with your style, go to a fabric store and purchase fabric to make your own.
Decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune or look like you pieced odd items together. Continued from page 23 new carpeting and expensive floors. You never know what renters will do to them. So let’s examine a low gloss, vinyl peel and stick floor. There are plenty of inexpensive options at your local home improvement store. Many styles cost less than $1 per square, or around $22 for a box of 30. The more stylish the pattern, the more pricey the project gets. But you can also get plenty of styles for less than $40 per box. You can now find a peel and stick vinyl that looks and is shaped like hardwood planks. Whether you prefer squares or planks, when you actually make your purchase, you must know the square footage of the room and always add an extra 10% for overage. The second simple way to freshen up your room is paint. A fresh coat of paint for the entire room will give it a whole new look. One might think paint is fairly simple to choose and you can quickly add a fresh coat of paint, but there are some key things to keep in mind. For many, the easiest part is actually getting the paint up on the wall. The more difficult parts are choosing the color and selecting the actual type of paint. There are many paints out there and they aren’t the same. Make sure you talk to the person where you purchase your paint from. Let them know what type of rooms you’re painting and they can help navigate you through some simple questions that can make or break your desired outcome. They’ll ask if
you want flat, eggshell, satin, semigloss, or gloss. While many people will choose based on price, you should approach this similar to how you decide the type of flooring you want. Consider how the room will be used, who will be in the room most, whether the room is a bedroom or bathroom, etc. Flat paint, while often the least expensive, is not washable, which is important to consider in a household
you’ll need to remove the staples and tack boards that held it down. This is a painstaking, detailed process, but it is essential. You have to be careful as some tacks are difficult to see and you don’t want to cut yourself, so be careful. You can fairly easily use a screwdriver to pop up the tacks. Start at one spot, and work in a pattern through the room. You will find tacks and staples not only along the wall edges but through the center of the room as well. When that is done, sweep or vacuum up the removed tacks and clean the entire surface to prep the floor. Then, move on to preparing the walls. This will also allow you the chance to fix any holes in the wall with spackle. You’ll also be removing all of your switch plates and outlets. They can be replaced very inexpensively (some can be found for less than a quarter) so you may just want to go with new ones. Prepare the room for painting by using primer on any darker walls. A brand like Kilz is latex-based but it also doubles as a stain blocker. It is also important to put an effort into an even coat on the primer, as a good base makes for an exceptional finished product. Starting with the walls means you won’t have to worry about any specks of paint on the floor since you’re going to be covering it anyways. Once the paint is dry, and the floor is prepped,

The second simple way to freshen up your room is paint. A fresh coat of paint for the entire room will give it a whole new look. with children with fingerprints, food, and the many unexpected things kids decorate the walls with. Kitchens and bathrooms or any rooms with moisture or water would require more of a semi-gloss to create a type of water barrier to keep all that moisture absorbing into your walls and creating a breeding ground for mold. Now that you have your paint and flooring, it’s time to get started. First up, prepare the room. Carpets are easily removed — use a tool like a utility knife to cut a line the length of the wall along the edge and then pull it up. It will tear similar to fabric and all you’ll need to do is roll it up and take it to your local dump, if your regular trash pickup won’t take bigger items. Make sure you get rid of the old carpet that same day, if possible. Don’t leave an old carpet outside on your lawn. It will kill the grass underneath in days, and bugs will crawl into it. Then, when you try and load it into your car, you’re in for a bad surprise. Once you remove the carpet,

While the floor panels come with adhesive stick on the bottom, you might want to add some additional glue to the panels to make sure the stick is strong. Before starting, lay some floor tiles down to develop a plan for starting. Some recommend creating a center point of the room with using a chalk line as a guide. However, depending on how many tiles fit the length and width of your room and how square your room is, may allow you to simply start from one corner and work your way across. If you end up having to cut the tiles, make sure you ask someone who’s done it before as there are many tricks to make it easier. Always make sure to use caution when cutting any item with a sharp knife. The family room we’re showcasing is 17 feet long by 12 feet wide. We needed 7 boxes, and we used redwood vinyl tiles by Traffic Master.
Each box was $22.50 and we needed seven boxes, but we’ll have some left over. The room also had six stairs leading to the kitchen that were also carpeted. Not wanting to refinish just six steps, we added some inexpensive new carpeting to the stairs. When finished, you’ll have what looks like a brand new room that didn’t cost a lot to upgrade. Vinyl floors are also easy to clean. And make sure you keep any leftover tiles. You might need them if any get damaged in the future. Our entire project cost less than $300. We have had people bring in pictures of headboards, kitchen islands, ‘Pottery Barn’ items, and we can have them made any size and out of real wood.” Bookcases and wall units are the top sellers at Wood You Furniture. “We can have a bookcase made any size, custom wall units without the custom price,” Cornell said. “People are amazed at how inexpensive we can have a wall of bookcases made that will look like ‘built-ins,’ but for a third of the price.” Wood Yo u Furniture has a steady customer base, with
many customers returning and referring others to the business. “I have been advertising a lot since I took over, so we have seen a lot of newcomers,” Cornell said. “My target market is anyone with a home, business, or apartment. Try to dilute the urine prior to eight hours having elapsed for the best effect. Burrowing Animals: Moles and voles are among the more common lawn damage culprits. Voles are small rodents that resemble mice but have stouter bodies, shorter tails, and rounder heads. They feast on everything from bulbs, succulent roots, ground cover, and even dead animals in their paths. Their burrows enable them to move around relatively undetected, typically until the damage has already been done. Moles, although they have a similar-sounding name, are not related to voles and look very different. They have a cylindrical body shape with velvety fur, very small or invisible ears, and large paws for digging. Moles often feed on earthworms
and other small invertebrates found in the soil. The burrows they create are essentially traps for the worms, who fall into the burrows, where moles easily access them. Moles often stockpile worms for later consumption in underground larders. Voles can be kept away with natural vole predators, such as cats, hawks, owls, and snakes. Mouse traps can also capture voles when baited. You may also dig sharp materials or chicken wire into your soil around planting beds to make it uncomfortable for voles and moles to tunnel through. Moles can also be controlled with traps. Finding active mole tunnels will help you place the traps effectively to either kill or simply contain the mole. The live animal can be relocated to a site where they won’t cause trouble. Lawn damage can occur through a number of different factors.
