Small details are key in selecting a vacation home A

dream home means different things to different people. To some, an ideal home sits atop a hill and has enough rooms to accommodate generations upon generations of family members. To others, a home small in stature but with views to die for is all a homeowner needs. While preferences may vary on the home itself, there are a few things buyers of all shapes and sizes prefer when shopping for the home of their dreams. • Agreeable weather. Vacation home shoppers often prefer year-round warm weather so they know their respite from the cold is never too far away. For example, a locale such as Port St. Lucie, Fla., boasts an average temperature of 73.7, providing the ideal getaway to snowbound men and women stuck in the throes of winter. • Affordability. A dream home stays a dream for many people because of the misconception that it is beyond their financial reach. “While a seaside villa in Italy might never be a reality, there are places where it is still affordable to own and maintain a vacation home,” says Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc.

Compared to neighboring counties, St. Lucie County and Martin County represent the piece of South Florida that is still considered affordable. Endowed with the rich quality of life South Florida has to offer, both St. Lucie and Martin counties also offer and affordable cost-of-living vacationers will appreciate.

• Proximity to other hotspots. Even if you’re looking for a place to simply unwind, a dream home’s proximity to hotspots or other exotic locales never hurts. Port St. Lucie, for example, offers all a vacationer needs to relax and unwind, and it’s only 90 miles from the Bahamas by boat and a short drive to Miami, Palm Beach, and Orlando.

• Accessibility of activities. While an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is great, no one wants to escape to a place with nothing to do.When shopping for a place to buy or build your dream getaway, be sure there’s plenty of accessibility to popular activities like boating, fishing, diving, surfing, canoeing, or kayaking.

• Proximity to major airports. Unless you plan on living in your vacation home year-round, you’ll want the home to be somewhere that’s close to major airports. This makes it easier to get to your home and flights won’t be as expensive. For more information on finding your dream, visit pace2000homes.com.

Clayton Homes of Anderson does business the right way L

ike most people selecting a career path, or career change, one incident usually can be the springboard. For Randy Attaway, site manager at Clayton Homes of Anderson, that was the case. A few years ago, Attaway was helping his mother select a new factory-built home, and he wasn’t very happy with the process or service he received. “After helping my mother and seeing how lacking the service was that she received, I joined the industry to help make it better,” Attaway said. And he certainly picked a top team to join in Clayton Homes. The business started in 1934 and has sold more than 1.5 million homes. The company builds, sells, finances, leases, and insures manufactured and modular homes as well as commercial and educational buildings. Clayton has 12,000 team members, 35 home building facilities, and more than 1,000 home centers throughout the U.S. The Anderson team has five employees, with more than 100 total years of experience in the industry, specializing in manufacturing, sales, design, service, insurance, and financing. The company was bought in 2003 by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, one of the top companies in the world. Buffett’s business sense has helped guide the company through the rough times the housing market has experienced in recent years. Buffett said Clayton avoided most of the issues during the

h o u s i n g c r i s i s by re q u i r i n g down payments and matching homeowners’ payments with their income level. Clayton also retained ownership of its loans. “Homeownership makes sense for most Americans, particularly at today’s lower prices and bargain interest rates,” Buffett said recently in his annual address to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. “But a house can be a nightmare if the buyer’s eyes are bigger than his wallet and if a lender — often protected by a government guarantee — facilitates his fantasy. Our country’s social goal should not be to put families into the house of their dreams, but rather to put them into a house they can afford.”

Clayton Homes of Anderson has many factory-built homes for customers to choose from.

And that’s what Clayton Homes does. Attaway’s team in Anderson works with customers using those same policies Buffett talked about. Overall, sales have been down the last few years, but Clayton Homes has weathered the storm. “Sales have been down overall, but the demand for quality, affordable housing has kept us busy,” Attaway said.“Activity, applications, approvals, and sales have all been up lately and there is evidence that lending institutions are easing up on credit approvals. We expect 2012 to be a great year.” Clayton Homes caters to all types of buyers — first-time, repeat, vacation homes, and people looking to downsize or upgrade. Clayton also can work with buyers on trading in their old homes.

4 simple rules for perfect exterior painting 1.Take time to prepare the surface properly According to Zimmer, this is where a lot of inexperienced painters go wrong. ”It’s important to fight the urge to start painting as soon as possible,” says Zimmer. “Even the best paints can fail if they’re applied to a poorly prepared surface.”

Top quality paints, brushes and equipment, coupled with a little professional advice, are all it takes to successfully paint a home’s exterior.

f you want professionallooking results when painting exterior wood, approach the project as if you were a professional painting contractor.

Before beginning to paint, clean the surface thoroughly. This can be done with rented power-washing equipment or by scrubbing with a long-handled brush using plain soap and water. Afterward, remove any remaining loose, flaking, or peeling paint by scraping or wire-brushing. Next, sand down rough edges on the old paint, as well as areas where the paint is glossy. Finally, brush off the dust and particles left from the sanding and scraping. Then sand and prime any areas where the wood is bare.

That means following four simple rules that come second nature to experienced painters, says Debbie Zimmer, spokesperson for the Paint Quality 2. On very hot days, try to avoid painting in direct sunshine, since surfaces sitting in direct sun can be 10 to 20° hotter than the air temperature. One way to cope with this and still keep the job moving is to paint on the shady side of the house. The four rules for perfect painting involve a lot of common sense and take a little selfdiscipline. • Read all toy labels. Kids have so many toys that parents can easily overlook toys that might be safety hazards. Parents of especially young children might feel a little run down from raising their youngster and unknowingly let a few toys slip past their radar. However, it’s imperative parents read all toy labels before handing the toys over to a child. Pay specific attention to the recommended ages for each toy, as those recommendations are often made with child safety in mind. • Keep kids at an arm’s length at all times when around water. Another potential threat to kids’ safety around the house is water. Children can drown in as little as an inch of water, and it might only take a few minutes to do so. As a result, parents must be mindful and attentive whenever kids are around water. Bathtubs, toilets and, of course, pools present serious safety hazards to young kids. Whenever kids are around water, always stay within arm’s length. • Erect a fence around a pool or spa. Many communities have laws in place that require pools to be fenced in. But those laws often only mandate the yard where the pool is located be fenced in.While that might be sufficient, it can also help to erect a fence around the pool itself and keep a lock on the

hether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same. Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own. • Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for itself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service,

innovative design, and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off. • Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be. • Look for a builder who does more than build. A good builder should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualified professionals to make

Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions before you select your home builder.

the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects, and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be. • Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-of-theline construction materials and features. Choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifice on quality when building a new home. Consider some alternatives to granite countertops

G

ranite has proven a popular choice for kitchen renovations over the last several years. But concern about the potential health implications of granite, not to mention cost and maintenance, is causing many homeowners to reconsider granite for countertops and backsplashes. It’s hard to deny the appeal of granite’s appearance. It can be beautiful and complement many design styles. However, it tends to be porous, and the Food and Drug Administration has said that it

may harbor potentially dangerous bacteria if not properly cleaned. Furthermore, there is evidence that granite may give off high levels of radon depending on where the stone was harvested. Fortunately for homeowners who like the look of granite but want something that’s more affordable and easier to maintain, there are many alternatives available that mimic the look of granite without the health concerns. Solid surface products that are made with composite materials

are growing in popularity. Many contain quartz or other stone mixed with plastic and glass binders. These products tend to be easier to maintain than granite, and many come backed with manufacturer warranties. Due to the solid surface materials of the past, these types of materials have garnered a bad name. But new innovations are so high-quality, that many consumers have difficulty deciphering between real granite and lookalikes. Engineered stone is another

option for homeowners. These products are made from bits of natural stone mixed with fillers and offer the same scratch- and heat-resistance as granite. Depending on the material, solid surface products and engineered stone can cost anywhere from $35 to $125 per square foot. These surfaces are more costefficient than granite, which can start at around $50 per square foot. If cost is not a factor and durability the chief concern, ho-

meowners can consider another material — concrete. Concrete can be tinted or patterned in adherence to a homeowner’s desired design style. Because it can be labor-intensive to install, the price of concrete will likely rival granite. Homeowners who want to buck tradition and consider a countertop material other than granite have plenty of attractive and durable options from which to choose. ■ metro creative connection

Don’t limit yourself in spring cleaning F

or homeowners, spring cleaning is one of the annual rites of spring. The return of warmer weather presents the perfect opportunity for homeowners to open the windows, let some fresh air in, and tidy up after a few

months spent cooped up inside while the weather outside was frightful. But now that spring has arrived, the time to clean up around the house has come. Homeowners about to start on their annual spring cleaning

should consider the following before beginning.

∂ Get the right tools The right tools won’t necessarily be a hammer and nails, but rather, cleaning products that can

make spring cleaning more efficient. Rubber gloves, cleaning products (preferably natural products that are good for the environment), and enough garbage bags to discard a winter’s worth of clutter should all be on hand before you begin cleaning. If they’re not, you’ll likely need to make a trip to the store while cleaning, which can be time-consuming and prolong the process.

∂ Ta k e s o m e inventory

Many people have no problem buying new clothes, but they do find it hard to get rid of older items. Part of spring cleaning is tossing old items you no longer use, and that includes clothing. Clothing can take up a significant amount of space, so take some inventory on your wardrobe and decide which items you want to keep and which ones you can afford to discard or even donate.

∂ Address the windows

If the last several months have been especially cold or snowy, then you might not have looked out the windows in quite some time. Unfortunately, those windows might have accumulated quite the amount of dirt and grime while you were huddled inside. When washing the windows, do so on a cloudy day, as the sun can actually cause streaking. In addition, be mindful of what you’re using to wipe down the windows post-cleaning. Microfiber rags typically give windows a great shine without any streaking. The blinds and drapes will also need to be addressed, as they have likely accumulated some dust over the last few months. Dust the valance and the frame, and wipe the blinds down with a damp cloth. You can also use your vacuum’s upholstery and brush attachments to further clean blinds and drapes.

∂ Tidy up the bed

You likely wash your bed linens

regardless of the season. When spring cleaning, toss these linens into the washing machine and don’t forget to wash the mattress pads and bed skirting as well. While those items are in the wash, flip all the mattresses in your household.

∂ Don’t forget the kitchen

The kitchen is not immune to clutter, and it’s especially easy for items to overstay their welcome in the refrigerator and the kitchen cabinets. Look for old takeout containers in the refrigerator that have managed to stick around, and throw these out as well as any items that have passed their expiration dates. While items in the kitchen cabinets might not have an expiration date, it helps to remove them from the pantry and then dust and wipe down the shelves. When doing so, discard any items that no longer seem appetizing.

∂ Beat the rugs

Area rugs have no doubt collected dirt and dust over the last several months.Though vacuuming these area rugs might be enough during the year, take advantage of the pleasant weather and take the rugs outside to beat them and rid them of dust and any other particles the vacuum might have missed over the last few months.

∂ Empty and clean the bookshelves

Bookshelves are one the biggest collectors of dust in many homes. Open the windows in the home and then remove books from the shelves. Once the books have been removed, dust the shelves and wipe them down with a damp cloth. And don’t forget to dust the books and reorganize titles before returning them to their newly cleaned shelves. Spring cleaning is something all homeowners must do to keep their homes healthy and clean. Spring cleaning is an annual event at many households, and a few simple strategies can make it go much more smoothly. ■ metro creative connection

Make your backyard a beautiful vacation destination

T

he best vacations lift us out of the frenzy of our lives, whisking us off to faraway places that relax and rejuvenate us. Yet a great vacation can also be a great financial strain as well — and really, how relaxing is that? Especially since once the trip is over, there’s typically little to show for all the expense beyond a few snapshots you can post on Facebook.

So how do you meet the pressing need for a stress-reducing change of scenery without wiping out your savings in the process? The solution may actually be simpler, and closer, than you think: Open your own back door, and begin imagining the leisure possibilities right beyond your doorstep. Instead of throwing a bunch of money at a short-term getaway, consider investing a portion of it into transforming your backyard into a personal relaxation oasis. Don’t be put off by how big a task that sounds. Start out simple, making additional changes as finances allow and inspiration strikes.

To begin with, your yard may need some degree of facelift. Hire a quality professional landscaper who can design around native plant species, for maximum benefit and minimal upkeep.

Yet landscaping is really only setting the stage — you still need some kind of show-stopper to complete your yard’s transformation. Pools and decks are whopping financial commitments. There is, however, a less bank-breaking path to backyard-relaxation bliss: Invest in the very symbol of relaxation itself. Invest in a hammock and hammock stand. “Repeat customers are always telling me the best mini-vacation they’ve ever bought has been a hammock and a hammock stand,” says J.R. Pelletier, manager of TheHammockCompany.com, an international leader in hammock sales. “A good hammock can feel as if you’ve just caught a flight straight out of your stressful daily life.” Plus, a quality fabric hammock can make your yard look as pretty as a vacation postcard as well. Recent advances in all-weather syn-

thetic textiles have vastly expanded design and color options for fabric hammocks.

“It used to be fabric hammocks were just drab,” notes Walter R. Perkins III, CEO of The HammockSource, the world’s largest manufacturer and seller of hammocks. “Owning one meant watching what little color it had fade like a flower by summer’s end. But today, a quality fabric hammock can be a show-stopper for your yard, for many seasons to come.” Add an arc-style cypress or faux-wicker hammock stand, and your outdoor living space becomes not only a gorgeous relaxation destination, but also one that requires no checked-baggage fees or full-body scans to get to. Your favorite patch of yard is finally the prime spot for unwinding, a personal relaxation space for letting your mind wander to all those distant getaway places you might one day like to go. But for now, you’re pretty content right where you are, aren’t you? ■ metro creative connection

Is it time to build that new half-bathroom? W A new half-bathroom could be the right home improvement project this spring

hen it comes to renovating a home, homeowners expect to spend money. No home renovation or home improvement project is free, but some are less costly than others. The addition of a halfbathroom is a popular project among homeowners, and it won’t necessarily break the bank.

If converting existing floor space into a half-bathroom, such a renovation can cost as little as a few thousand dollars, making the addition of a powder room one of the few home improvement projects where the value added to the

home exceeds the cost of the renovation. Before deciding to add a half-bathroom, it helps to consider some of the pros and cons of the project.

∂ Pros

• Convenience: A halfbathroom is often added on the home’s main floor or in the basement or attic. This makes it more convenient for guests to use the restroom during a dinner party or when coming over to watch the big game in a basement home-theater area. • Problem-free: Half-bathrooms are smaller because they don’t have a shower or bathtub. That means common

The addition of a half-bathroom is a project that often makes practical and financial sense.

bathroom problems like mold and mildew are not as big a concern as they are for full bathrooms. • More choices: Because mold and mildew aren’t likely to present a problem in a half-bathroom, homeowners have more options at their disposal when choosing floors and countertops.

Once the pros and cons have been weighed, homeowners who want to go forward with the project should then check with their local municipality to ensure the codes and requirements won’t restrict their project. Size or window restrictions might curtail the project or limit what homeowners

can do, which might change their minds on the project altogether. The addition of a halfbathroom often makes practical and financial sense. But before making any addition, homeowners must weight the pros and cons to make the best decision possible. ■ metro creative connection

∂ Cons

• Space: As their name implies, half-bathrooms are much smaller than full bathrooms. As a result, they tend to feel cramped. • Value: Though an inexpensive half-bathroom addition might recoup its value and then some at resale, the project won’t add as much resale value to a home as a full bathroom addition might. • Loss of storage: If storage around the house is sparse, homeowners might be better off keeping the area designated for the half-bathroom as a storage closet instead of a bathroom.

Lawn care tips for first time home buyers

F

irst-time homeowners can be overwhelmed at the responsibility that comes with home ownership. While some of those responsibilities can be stressful, others can prove therapeutic. Many homeowners find caring for their lawns to be an enjoyable hobby that helps relieve stress. Time spent outdoors in the warm sun helps improve mood, and a lush lawn and garden can instill a sense of pride in homeowners. First-time homeowners with no history of caring for a lawn can still turn their lawn into a lush oasis to be proud of.

Start with the soil

Soil is the foundation for any good lawn or garden. Healthy soil will result in healthy plants and vegetables. Unfortunately, not all homeowners are lawn care enthusiasts, and first-time homeowners might discover their lawns and gardens need lots of work. That work should begin with a soil test. Do-it-yourself soil kits are available at most major home improvement and lawn and garden centers. For those who prefer to trust a professional, the United States Department of Agriculture has Cooperative Extension System offices in every state and U.S. territory. Such offices provide valuable

Home Improvement #1

information to homeowners, and many even provide free or low-cost soil tests. These tests can help homeowners learn more about their soil and what, if anything, they need to do improve its health.

Find the right grass

Some lawns might be an eyesore because the grass is not the right type of grass for that particular region. If a grass is not a good fit for the region and local climate, it likely won’t thrive or will require considerable and often costly maintenance to stay lush. Bermuda and tall fescue grasses are popular options in many areas of North America, but it’s still best to consult a lawn care professional to determine which grass is best for a given region. Learn the ins and outs of caring for the grass, including which types of seed and fertilizer are the best fit, as well as the recommended watering guidelines.

Plant properly

Planting new grass might seem like a big undertaking, but it’s actually quite easy, even for first-time homeowners. Once a person has determined the correct type of grass to install, planting is much more simple than one might think. • Aerate the soil. Soil compaction

is a problem for many homeowners. Heavy usage often compacts the soil, making it very difficult for the lawn to hold oxygen and water that roots need to grow and absorb valuable nutrients. Aerating increases nutrient, oxygen, and water movement into the soil, improving rooting and controlling thatch buildup. Hand aerators might prove effective on smaller lawns, but most lawns would benefit from a core aeration machine. For first-time homeowners, it might be best to enlist the services of a professional the first time aeration is done to learn the process. • Spread seed evenly. Grass seed should be spread evenly over all tilled areas. Spreading can be done by hand or by using a seed spreader. • Add a light layer of soil over the seed. Once the seed has been spread, cover the seeded areas with a light layer of soil. Some soils are treated, and these treated soils provide nutrients that encourage growth. • Water well, but don’t overdo it. The soil around the seed should be moist until the grass has grown in to its desired height. However, avoid overwatering, which can drown the seed and make new grass growth impossible.

Fertilize

Fertilizer is a friend to lawns, providing the nutrients a lawn needs to

Maintaining a lush lawn can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby for homeowners. grow in thick. When fertilizing, use a spreader. The type of spreader is up to the homeowners, but know that drop spreaders, which drop the fertilizer directly below the spreader, tend to be more accurate but take more time, while broadcast spreaders, which drop fertilizer in a pattern away from the spreader, are less accurate but cover large areas in a much shorter period of time. Avoid fertilizing the same area twice, and be patient. Fertilizing might seem like a tedious process, but if done correctly,

it should lead to a lush lawn. When fertilizing, it’s best to do so during the fall and spring. The exact time to fertilize depends on the region, but it’s generally best to fertilize between April and early June, and then in the fall between late September and early November. When it comes to lawn care, first-time homeowners should not be intimidated by this sudden responsibility. Caring for a lawn can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby. ■ metro creative connection

Shop in off-season for major improvements ing a blast of cool air-conditioning, it might be wise to think about the performance of your furnace, too. While HVAC professionals and home improvement chains could be charging top dollar for a new air conditioning system, they may offer discounts on furnaces because they’re simply not in demand this time of year. If you find an affordable furnace, store the furnace until the time is right to have it installed.

A

n often overlooked side-effect of the recession is that many people cannot afford to move and have decided to stick with the home they have and make desired improvements. Thanks to off-season discounts, some months of the year may be better than others for renovations. The home improvement industry is not much different than any other. When demand is high, prices are generally at their peak. When demand is low, prices are lowered to entice shoppers to buy. Right now, many homeowners may be thinking of certain improvements, such as the installation of a pool or deck, or even replacing an air conditioning system in advance of the warm weather. But it could be financially savvy to wait until the warm weather is gone to do so. Many pool companies and stores discount their inventory considerably after September. That’s because

this time of year in most of the country is when the weather starts to change and people are less likely to think about a dip in the pool. With the arrival of the new school year, many others are focusing less on pool fun and more on carpools and sporting events. Furthermore, in an effort to capitalize on both the summer and winter seasons, many pool stores double as Christmas tree and accessory outlets come the colder months. That means they’ll need to clear out their showrooms and stock areas of pools prior to delivery of Christmas merchandise. You may land a considerable discount on the pool package. Furthermore, if you have room in a garage or shed to store the pool equipment and assembled materials, you can wait until the next season to hire an installer to set up the pool when you desire. As you are thinking about turning down the thermostat and enjoy-

The holiday season tends to be a slow time for home-improvement contractors simply because most homeowners are thinking more about shopping and entertaining than knock-down, tear-out jobs. Waiting until the end of the year for some major renovations could be advantageous. The spring and summer are prime times for outdoor entertaining, so the addition of decks or elaborate landscaping may come at an elevated price. However, once autumn arrives, the same services may be much cheaper, depending on the job and if the contractor can secure materials at a discounted price. If you can hold off on that new deck or patio until after September, it may be in your best interest. However, if a winter installation is in your design, you may find yourself actually paying more in labor costs if inclement weather delays the installation. Here are some other ways to save off-season. • Explore wintertime reductions on air conditioning systems. • New appliance models released could mean year-end reductions on that model year. • Purchase bulk topsoil and other landscaping materials in the winter when this industry is slow. • Many pests enter a dormancy during the winter, so exterminators may discount for termite reduction during the winter and early spring. • Fireplace installation or chimney masonry work could be discounted during the summer months. • The spring season is an ideal time for roofing projects, although some contractors will work in the winter, too. Roofing companies are often tied up during the summer months and may ask for premium charges. Keep in mind that summer is a prime time for any and all improvements. Beat the prices and the wait time by shopping off-season for your renovations. ■ metro creative connection

Tips on how to survive the summer heat

S

ummer heat waves are an unfortunate part of what many people consider their favorite time of year. Sunny summer days can quickly be spoiled when the mercury rises to heights no one finds comfortable. For those without air conditioning, heat waves can not only be uncomfortable, but they also may be deadly. In 2010, the city of Moscow was hit hard when 11,000 of its residents died due to an intense heat wave. Referred to as the Great Russian Heat Wave of 2010, this deadly stretch of heat included 62 consecutive days with above average high temperatures. Such a heat wave is unbearable for anyone, let alone those who don’t have air conditioning. Should a particularly daunting heat wave arrive this summer, consider the following suggestions to beat the heat. • Stay downstairs. Cold air descends, so the upper floors of a home will be significantly warmer than downstairs during a heat wave. Whenever possible, stay down-

Home Improvement #1

stairs if the temperature is hot. If need be, sleep on an air mattress or sleeping bag to ensure a better night’s sleep. • Watch what you eat. Diets that are heavy in protein have become the “in” dietary fad among those looking to improve their health. One of the reasons such a diet is effective is because protein boosts metabolism. However, in so doing protein is also increasing metabolic heat and warming the body as a result. During a heat wave, this rise in body temperature can be dangerous. While it’s safe to consume protein during a heat wave, don’t overdo it. • Circulate air throughout the home.Though it might feel like that old box fan is simply blowing hot air all over the place, when combined with open doors at night it’s actually functioning like a crude exhaust system, pushing hot air outdoors and drawing cooler evening air in. Safety concerns understandably make many people wary of leaving their front doors wide open. If possible, install a screen door and keep

March 20, 2012 IWANNA® ~ 19

the front door open until bedtime. In the meantime, open the windows to allow the cool air in during the evening and overnight. Once the sun rises in the morning, close the windows, the blinds and doors to trap the cool air indoors. Once the air inside is warmer than the air outside, open any windows, blinds, and doors. • Install a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are remarkably effective at battling hot, stuffy rooms. Ceiling fans quietly and effectively circulate air, making a room much more comfortable to be in during periods of extreme heat. • Remain hydrated. Remaining hydrated is essential during a heat wave. Men and women should drink more water than usual, and recognize that thirst is often the first indicator of dehydration. Individuals who sweat profusely should consider eating small amounts of food as they consume water. This helps replace the electrolytes lost by sweating. Men and women should also know that alcoholic and caffeinated beverages promote dehydration and should therefore be avoided during a heat wave.

The installation of a ceiling fan can help individuals without air conditioning survive a summer heat wave. • Go to the movies. Don’t discount the benefit of seeing a movie during a heat wave. Though the theater might be packed with like-minded theatergoers, a midday movie in an air conditioned theater might still be more comfortable than sitting at home in a house with no air conditioning. • Turn off the lights and other appliances unless they’re being used. Incandescent light bulbs and

appliances generate excess heat. If the computer isn’t being used, turn it off and keep the lights off until it’s absolutely necessary that they be on. • Embrace cold dinners. A cold dinner like homemade sandwiches and salads don’t require the use of an oven to enjoy. Keeping the oven off can help keep the interior temperature down. ■ metro creative connection

Outdoor retreat plan starts with the right tools T

his year, transform your outdoor area into a family retreat with an “out-of-the-box” vision, careful planning, and the appropriate tools. First, gather your family together for a brainstorming session and target what you want to do in your outdoor haven. Next, make a to-do list of the projects required to make your vision a reality. Finally, round up the tools and supplies you need and get to work. To help you, Woodcraft offers a few suggestions to make your work easier.

∂ Advice from Tommy Mac

Tommy MacDonald, host of “Rough Cut — Woodworking with Tommy Mac” on public television, has a few tips for your outdoor adventure. ”Before you saw a board or drive a screw, make sure you have all the tools, supplies, and plans you need rounded up and ready for the project at hand,” says MacDonald.“Stopping and starting to hunt a tool or make a trip to buy materials wastes time and energy better spent on building. Don’t forget the safety gear and first aid kit, and work with a partner on the big projects whenever possible.”

∂ Gathering Places

Decks, patios, and porches, both open and enclosed, invite people to gather for a meal, share conversation, or play games. To start your building projects, use the Bosch 12” Dual Bevel Miter Saw for your crosscutting chores. The saw’s patented Axial-Glide System expands horizontal cutting capacity to 14” and affords a compact work space that saves up to 12”. Make quick work of building a deck or porch floor with the Kreg Deck Jig that creates a strong wood-to-wood bond with self-tapping screws that are hidden for a smooth, splinter-free surface. Compatible with composite deck boards, ACQ treated lumber, and native softwoods such as redwood, cedar, and pressure-treated pine, the jig comes with Kreg Coarse ProtecKote (anti-corrosion) deck screws that are sold separately and can also be used as simple face screws for a variety of outdoor projects. Add a Pinnacle Three-Piece Combination Square (blade, square head, and center finder), a Woodcraft 6’ tape measure and a se-

lection of HIGHPOINT stainless steel exterior grade screws to your tool lineup for general measuring, marking, and joinery.

∂ Comfortable Furniture

Whether you’re on the deck or on the lawn, comfortable furniture will enhance your outdoor living experience. Woodcraft offers a wide selection of outdoor furniture plans, including Adirondack chairs, swings, garden benches, rockers, picnic tables and benches, arbors, and much more. For your furniture projects, use the Rockwell BladeRunner, a portable, multipurpose precision cutter that uses any T-shank jigsaw blades to make straight, curved, or controlled cuts, allowing you to use both hands to guide the material (wood, metal, ceramic tile, aluminum, or plastic). The BladeRunner can be wall mounted, but easily detaches for use at your worksite and has a dust port for attachment to a shop vacuum for continuous cleanup. To hold workpieces together, Jorgenson offers its ISD3 Expandable Clamp in 6”, 12”, 18”, 14” and 36” sizes. Two clamps can be joined to

extend the clamping length by 6”. Use the Festool CSX Lithium-Ion 10.8V Cordless Drill Driver Set for all your drilling and driving chores, especially in tight spaces, dark spots, and corners.

∂ Activity Areas & Secluded Spots

Wooden playground equipment, game courts, garden benches, arbors, gates, and trellises organize your outdoor living area for fast-paced play and quiet relaxation. For cutting chores on these varied projects, use the Festool Trion PS 300 EQ Jigsaw, a 720-watt tool that cuts 43/4” wooden beams, 3/4” aluminum or 3/8” steel with ease. Electronic Multi-Material Speed Control provides the correct constant speed for the material you are sawing, which prevents overheating. If you need a second pair of hands for large or awkward tasks, the Rockwell JawStand can help. The easy-to-use work support stand is ideal for holding, clamping, and feeding large work or sheets of material.

∂ Protect Your Projects & Your Hands

Ensure a long life for your outdoor wood projects with OneTime Wood Protector, a proprietary acrylate resin blend that penetrates wood, actually becoming part of the cellular structure, and cures by exposure to UV radiation. Curing requires two dry days with no precipitation. OneTime is guaranteed to protect new wood, old wood, or wood that has had a previous coating removed — for seven years. To protect your hands, cover them with YGC General Utility Gloves. Made of high quality, man-made materials, the gloves are form-fitting, lightweight, washable, and tough. Successfully plant around S your property

pring is a season for rebirth, and for homeowners that often means bringing their property back to life. Once the winter weather has subsided, it’s time to head outside and take inventory of the landscape and see how the yard, trees, bushes, and shrubs fared after another long winter.

One of the best and most ecofriendly ways to bring your yard back to life is to plant around the property. Planting can be a soothing and enjoyable way to spend some time outdoors in the spring air, and it’s not as difficult as it may seem. When planting around the home this spring, consider the following pointers.

Be aware of depth when planting.

It’s common for those who aren’t used to gardening to plant too deeply. The idea of planting deeply seems to be correct, as homeowners want to be certain their plants or trees will take root and it seems like common sense that the deeper the plant is planted, the more likely it is to take root. However, planting depth should mirror the depth the plant was grown in at the nursery. When purchasing a plant at the nursery, ask for the planting depth and be sure not to go any deeper than that when planting the plant on your property.

Home Improvement #1

Stake new trees if necessary.

While it’s great to imagine spring as a season of warm sun and extended daylight, in reality, most regions still get some wind and cold throughout spring. This can make planting trees a difficult proposition, as new trees might rock back and forth and struggle to establish new roots. To mitigate any strong winds, stake new trees when planting around the property. Not all new trees need to be staked, but for the ones that do, the stakes will act as a stabilizing force during strong winds, enabling the tree to establish healthy roots for years to come.

Consider container-grown plants.

Novice green-thumbers might find it best to go with container-grown plants. Container-grown plants are easy to plant around the property, and it’s also easy to change the look of the property by simply moving the plants around. Also, as the seasons change, it’s easy to reposition the plants so they’re still getting the sun exposure they need to thrive.

March 20, 2012 IWANNA® ~ 21

Get a second opinion.

Planting trees around the property can be akin to hanging a painting on the wall. It’s always best to get a second opinion to make sure the painting is straight, and the same goes with planting trees. Before backfilling the hole, ask someone to look at the tree from several angles to ensure that it is straight. Once the tree has been backfilled, it’s awfully difficult to reposition the tree.

Give the trees or plants their best chance to grow.

It’s important to survey the property ahead of planting to be certain the plants will be in the best place to thrive. Call the utility company and ask if there are any buried utility lines you’ll want to avoid. Also, a tree’s roots spread far beyond its branches, so be sure to plant the tree in a location that allows for that root growth without jeopardizing the property (i.e., roots spreading beneath the home’s foundation). ■ metro creative connection

Planting during the spring season is a great way for homeowners to restore their property after a harsh winter.

Keep home in top shape in case you have to sell

N

owadays, homeowners looking to sell their homes know it’s not as easy to do so as it might have been a few years ago.A struggling economy has made it difficult for many homeowners to sell their homes for a price they’re comfortable with. But the sagging economy is not the only thing can make it difficult to sell a home. In fact, a host of other things, some obvious but some not so obvious, can hurt a home’s value as well. • Location: A home’s location is arguably its best or worst selling point. A home in a great location won’t be as difficult to sell as a home in a bad neighborhood. But location goes beyond a neighborhood’s reputation, especially in recent years. Homeowners who live in a neighborhood or development with many foreclosures might find those foreclosed properties are hurting their own home’s value. Lots of

foreclosures could negatively affect a neighborhood’s reputation, which might make a home within that neighborhood less attractive to prospective buyers. • Appearance:A home’s appearance is another obvious variable that might affect its resale value. Homeowners might want their home to reflect their own individuality, but that’s not going to help when the time comes to sell the home. If the exterior paint is out of the ordinary, then it might be wise to choose a more traditional or conservative color before erecting the For Sale sign out front. The same goes for a home’s interior. If the interior design is especially unique, a more traditional interior decor might help the home sell faster. • Size and style: Another thing to consider when selling a home is its size and style. A home that stands out on the block might be an attention-grabber, but that’s not always attractive to prospective

buyers. For instance, a colonial sitting in the middle of a street filled with contemporary homes will stand out, but likely for all the wrong reasons. It will likely appear dated and out of place, which is something buyers might not want. In addition, if the home is considerably larger or smaller than the surrounding homes, then this could hurt its value. • Non-conformity: In many ways, conformity is not considered an admirable trait. But when selling a home, conformity could make the difference between a home selling quickly or remaining on the market for months if not years. When shopping for a home, buyers often shop in certain neighborhoods and towns and might see many different homes within a given ZIP code. Homeowners with homes that don’t conform to others in the area might find it difficult to sell their homes.

There are some steps homeowners can take to make their homes more attractive to potential buyers. For instance, homeowners trying to sell a two bedroom home in a neighborhood filled with three bedroom homes might notice their home’s value is not as high as that of surrounding homes, regardless of the neighborhood or how similar the home’s exterior is to surrounding homes. • Age: Older homes might have character and a sense of nostalgia, but appraisers take age into consideration when determining a home’s

value. And buyers tend to lean toward newer homes for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the feeling that newer homes have far more modern amenities than older homes. When it comes to a home’s value, there are a host of things that could ultimately increase or decrease that value in the eyes of prospective buyers. ■ metro creative connection

ew industries have grown as much in the last decade-plus as the home improvement industry. Whereas it was once commonplace for homeowners to have a handyman on speed dial, nowadays homeowners handle not only the routine upkeep necessary to maintain a home, but many home improvement projects as well. Home expert Danny Lipford, host of the nationally syndicated TV show, Today’s Homeowner, and radio show, Homefront, said,“Today you’ve got not only an amazing selection of tools to help with every project, but they also shorten the time it used to take to complete the project. When you couple that with all the DIY instruction and programming out there, it’s no wonder we have the confidence to do more on our own.” As popular as home improvement projects have become, many homeowners still find themselves pressed for time when it comes to tackling projects around the house. For homeowners without much time during the week, Woodcraft offers the following projects tailormade for weekend warriors.

Ready deck for summer fun

With spring on the horizon, the season to relax on the deck and soak up the sun is right around the corner. Homeowners can upgrade their deck and create an incredibly strong wood-to-wood bond with the Kreg Deck Jig System. Compatible with composite deck boards and ACQ treated lumber, the Kreg Deck Jig System can help homeowners create a beautiful and functional deck surface that’s completely free of exposed fasteners and painful splinters. The Kreg Deck Jig System’s easy grip handles help DIYers gain a secure hold and completely control each and every joint, while the system’s three separate drill guides allow for easy installation of deck boards in a variety of hard-to-reach areas. When combined with a few simple tools homeowners already own, the Kreg Deck Jig System ensures homeowners can vastly improve their deck no matter how pressed for time they might be.

Paint a new look inside

Spring is often seen as a season

of rejuvenation, so why not give your home a brand new look by repainting the interior? Veteran DIYers can no doubt recall when painting took as much elbow grease as it did time, but times have changed. Thanks to the new Fein MultiMaster, the tedious and timeconsuming job of scraping old paint with a putty knife and sanding tight spaces with paper wrapped around your finger is a thing of the past. The MultiMaster’s profiled sanding pads make scraping old paint easier than ever before, while its multiple user-friendly accessories that scrape, cut, shave, sand, polish, and remove grout make the MultiMaster an ideal companion for homeowners with several projects on tap this spring.

Tackle indoor projects on rainy days

Spring might be synonymous with feelings of rejuvenation, but it also brings spring showers. On rainy weekends, tackle interior projects with the Rockwell BladeRunner. Whether you want to cut and install base molding, chair rails or hardwood flooring or frame and trim windows and doors, the lightweight, portable BladeRunner is your go-to tool. This precision cutter’s variablespeed motor control and simple blade changing mechanism allow you to easily cut wood, metal, ceramic tile, aluminum, and plastic using a T-shank jigsaw blade. You can operate the BladeRunner on a benchtop or use the convenient wall mount bracket. Attach the tool’s dust port

to your shop vac for easy cleanup.

Prepare tools in advance

While there are several projects homeowners can complete in a single weekend, no project is likely to be successful without properly maintained tools. Homeowners should take inventory of their tools before beginning any projects to ensure the tools won’t cause any delays.

The Work Sharp(R) Knife and Tool Sharpener can bring tools back to life in a matter of minutes. This handheld, motorized tool sharpens any knife as well as scissors, tin snips, garden shears, and even lawn mower blades for green thumbers. The sharpener’s patented Flex-Tek(TM) belt technology conforms to the shape of any blade, practically guaranteeing a sharp edge and ensuring your next home improvement project will start off on the right foot.

Regardless of individual skill level, user-friendly tools like the Fein MultiMaster make home improvement projects safer and easier for homeowners. LOC-Blocks Interlocking Material Gripping Blocks grip both the work surface as well as your project without the use of any clamps. The nonslip pads support work during assembly without leaving marks, while the non-marring pads allow

homeowners to lift work above the surface while finishing edges. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection. To learn more about products that can help you successfully complete your home improvement projects this spring, visit woodcraft.com.

Work smarter

Tackling a home improvement project in a single weekend might not be easy, but DIYers can take steps to make such projects easier. For example, Vibe-Away Anti-Slip Pads are made from recycled tires and designed to reduce the transfer of vibration that occurs in most woodworking tools and stationary equipment. This shock absorption pad helps reduce sound, vibrations, and pulsating of router tables, scrollsaws, table saws, and other benchtop or stationary machines, making it easier to complete a project mistake-free and in less time. ■ metro creative connection

Summertime safety is a must S this season ummertime and the livin is easy. Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high...”

George Gershwin wrote these lyrics for the 1935 opera “Porgy and Bess.” They seem fitting to many people, as summertime is seen as a time to kick back, relax, and enjoy a slower pace.

are the most obvious dangers from the sun, there are other hazards as well. Failure to protect the eyes from UV sun exposure can result in photokeratitis, irreversible sunburn of the cornea. While it may cause temporary vision loss, recurrent incidences of photokeratitis can lead to permanent vision loss as well.

While summertime is a season to live easy, there are some inherent dangers to summer that can halt plans of fun in the sun. From skin cancer to insect bites, summertime can be dangerous for those who don’t play it safe.

Individuals who are exposed to sunlight between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. without UV protection may become sunburned, increasing their risk for skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, this year more than one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer and about 9,500 people will die from it.

With a greater number of people out and about enjoying the warm weather, the risk for accidents and injuries increases. The National Safe Kids Campaign says statistics indicate children will be rushed to emergency rooms around the country nearly three million times this summer. Higher rates of drowning, motor vehicle accidents, and bicycle injuries occur this time of year.

Dehydration and heat stroke are other potential hazards. Drinking plenty of water and other hydrating fluids (not diuretics like alcohol) can keep the body cool and refreshed. Headaches, acting angrily, dizziness, and excessive sweating or cessation of sweating may be signs of a serious sun-related health condition.

There are a number of potential summertime hazards men, women, and children can safeguard themselves against. Sun-related injuries While skin cancer and sunburn

Water hazards The Maryland CARES Program, which educates health care professionals and the public about pediatric care and safety, offers that drowning incidents increase 100 percent over the summer months. It takes only inches of water to drown a person,

especially a young child. Every year the news broadcasts stories of children who fell into backyard pools or adults swept out to sea by choppy waves.

People should never take bodies of water for granted. Swimming only where there is a certified lifeguard can make water recreation safer. Individuals should follow the guidelines posted regarding swimming and avoid oceans when storms are brewing because of rip tides and undertows. Children should always be carefully monitored around water. Selflatching gates around pools can help deter entry as well as safety covers or retractable pool ladders. Remember, pool floats and water wings (swimmies) should not be used as a substitute for a life vest. Wildlife dangers Just as many people come out of hibernation when the weather warms, so do animals and insect life. Tick bites are common when the weather is warm. Experts say that the months of May, June, and July are peak times for exposure to ticks, which may carry Lyme disease or another dangerous parasite. Ticks are small and can be difficult to spot. People can do a tick check after coming in from outside, paying careful attention

to the areas to which ticks tend to migrate: In ears, in and around the hair, under the arms, behind the knees, around the waist, and between the legs.

Mosquitoes, biting flies, bees, wasps, and other insects are in full force. Using an insect repellent can help keep them at bay and avoid bites. In addition to insects, animals like bats, squirrels, raccoons, and bears are more active in the warm weather. During the time of dawn and dusk, deer may be on the prowl for food before the heat of day. People can pay attention to wildlife when driving, hiking, or bicycling to avoid altercations. Most individuals can enjoy the summer if they make safety a priority when planning recreational activities.

Always keep an eye on children when they are near water, at a pool or at the beach.

Take time for a cleaner, healthier home S

pringtime is the best time to get your home and outdoor equipment ready for the approaching warm weather, and the sooner you start, the sooner you will be ready to enjoy the spring and summer months. Here are some suggestions to make your home as healthy and as clean as possible.

∂ Get rid of mold and mildew

When the house is closed up tight for the winter, it’s easy for mold and mildew to take hold and grow, and such growths can adversely affect your respiratory

system while potentially causing sinus congestion and eye irritation. Mold and mildew growth also creates unsightly stains, damaging paint and wall finishes as a result. Spray Nine(R) Cleaner/Disinfectant is very effective at controlling mold and mildew, addressing not only existing mold and mildew around the house, but also preventing any future problems. Further prevent mildew by venting bathrooms or opening a window to dry out the room after showering. Also check for and remedy any leaks that can contribute to mold and mildew

growth. In attics, basements and utility rooms, consider the use of a desiccant, which will remove moisture from the air.

∂ Protect against allergens, viruses, & bacteria

Effectively cleaning a home can involve several preventive measures to keep everyone free from viruses and bacteria. Spray Nine(R) Cleaner/Disinfectant takes just 45 seconds to disinfect a surface of harmful bacteria, including those associated with food poisoning, whooping cough and even infections such as MRSA. Registered as a hospital grade disinfectant by the Environmental Protection Agency, the spray takes even less time to disinfect a surface against viruses, doing so in just 30 seconds while protecting a home’s inhabitants from viruses including Influenza A2, Poliovirus Type I, a type of polio, and others that can cause the common cold and respiratory illnesses. Another way to reduce the spread of illness is to make sure everyone in the household washes their hands when coming in from school, work or from shopping.

∂ Say Goodbye to Odor

Readying a home for fresh, spring days also entails ridding its interior of odor. Spray Nine(R) Brand Odor Eliminator neutralizes offensive odors on contact by “caging” their molecules so they are no longer detectable to the nose. Homeowners can eliminate odors in their kitchens, carpets and even their musty basements, ensuring the home is odor-free for the long winter months ahead. In lieu of smoke and pet odors, Odor Eliminator provides a fresh floral scent and can even be added to compatible cleaning solutions to freshen the home as you clean. Think about adding houseplants as well. Plants are natural air filters and can go a long way toward cleaning the air of con-

The cleaner also kills foodborne germs that contaminate food preparation surfaces, including Salmonella and E.coli in just 45 seconds. It can also be used on propane tanks, countertops, stainless steel, painted surfaces, BBQ covers, and ceramic and tempered glass. The warm-weather season is also barbecue season. Spray Nine(R) Brand BBQ Grill Cleaner does double duty as a heavy-duty cleaner and a hard surface disinfectant. It easily dissolves grease, fat and burned-on food for quick cleanup with less effort.

The warm weather enables people to venture outdoors and commune with nature. Prepping the patio furniture for a new season of use often involved a lot of elbow grease and time. But Spray Nine(R) Brand Patio Furniture Cleaner cleans, kills germs, helps control mold and mildew and destroys bacterial odors in a matter of minutes while digging out grease, grime, fingerprints, bird droppings, suntan lotion, and other tough stains from outdoor and poolside furniture. The key benefit is its ability to kill harmful germs like Salmonella enterica, E. coli, and Athlete’s Foot Fungus. For more information on spring cleaning, visit spraynine. com.
