STRIKE TIMES CONFIRMED AHEAD OF BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) have announced a three day strike to take place this week after failing to reach an agreement with the government over pension reforms. Members will strike between 12pm and 5pm on Friday 2 May, between 2pm on Saturday 3 May and 2am on the morning of Sunday 4 May, and finally between 10am and 3pm on Sunday 4 May. During strike action, fire cover will be reduced with non-FBU members attending life-critical incidents such as house fires or road traffic incidents. Fire control will not be affected by the strike and will be operating as normal – people should continue to dial 999 in an emergency. Householders and businesses are advised not to take unnecessary risks during periods of strike action and make preparations to reduce their chances of needing assistance from the fire and rescue service. This includes taking extra care when cooking or smoking, checking that smoke alarms are working and knowing what to do in an event of a fire and sharing this knowledge with others. Owners of non-residential premises are also being reminded to prepare by ensuring their legislative duties, such as fire risk assessments and fire safety management, are up to date. Steve Apter, chief fire officer, said: “With the weather having improved recently, and with it being a bank holiday weekend, many people may be planning on having celebrations, such as a barbeque. "There will be reduced fire cover during the strike periods, and I would like to reiterate the advice that members of the public and businesses should be extra vigilant by checking fire safety arrangements and not taking unnecessary risks.” Phil Jordan is the Executive councillor for public safety and added: "It is disappointing this national strike action has been announced but residents should not worry as cover will be maintained on the Island." ■ View the fire safety videos at www.youtube.com/iwcouncil.

Tax credits claimants told to renew early The 10,600 people who receive tax credits on the Isle of Wight are being reminded by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to renew early before the 31 July deadline to avoid a last minute rush. HMRC has begun sending tax credits renewal packs to about 5.8 million households. The packs are sent out between April and June. Claimants need to tell HMRC about any changes to their circumstances that they haven’t already reported, including changes to working hours, childcare costs, and income, or if a partner has moved in. HMRC’s Director of Benefits and Credits, Nick Lodge, said: “People in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight should check their details and renew early to make sure they get the right money. Don't leave it; people who don't renew on time risk losing their payments." HMRC’s phone lines become busy as late July nears, so the earlier claimants renew their claims the quicker and easier they will find it. More than three million claimants renewed by the deadline last year, 86 per cent of those who were required to renew their claims

.

■ Claimants are urged to have the right documents available to help reduce mistakes when they are checking their form or calling HMRC’s Tax Credits Helpline. These would be, for example, payslips, end of year P60 forms and childcare payment details.

HMRC comes out of the office to help those who need help A new, flexible, face-to-face support service for customers who need extra help with their taxes, tax credits and child benefit entitlements will be rolled out in Hampshire and Isle of Wight by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) this spring. Following a successful sevenmonth trial in the north east of England, the new service will provide expert advisers to resolve issues on the phone, in-depth, in one go. It will also provide mobile adviser support at a range of convenient locations for those who need a face-to-face appointment. The phone advisers will be able to bring HMRC experts together in a single call to resolve multiple issues, without transferring customers around different parts of HMRC to different advisers who each deal with a separate issue. For those who need a personal appointment – HMRC’s mobile advisers will meet them at a range of venues, from government and community buildings to a person’s own home or business – at a time that suits them. Customers who need extra help on any HMRC issue – from help with a tax return, to assistance with a tax credits claim – will be identified and referred to the new service by both HMRC’s existing helpline phone advisers and by voluntary sector partners. Following the launch of the new service in May 2014, the current Enquiry Centre network in Hampshire and Isle of Wight will close. Ruth Owen, HMRC’s Director General for Personal Tax, said: “HMRC is dedicated to providing help to customers when they need it. The pilot showed that this is a valuable service for those who cannot get the help they need elsewhere.

“Our Enquiry Centres offer a great service to those who can reach them. But they are spread unevenly across the UK, the number of people using them continues to fall, and our research shows that the majority of customers who do use them don’t actually need to. The new service will enable us to tailor help in a way that works better and is more affordable. “Our specialised phone service will help customers whose affairs can be resolved over the telephone, and our face-to-face help will be available to those who need it, visiting them at a place convenient to them.” HMRC will also make more funding and support available for voluntary sector organisations to help them to deal with customers who turn to them for help. The new service will save customers around £17 million a year in lost time and travel costs, and will save taxpayers over £27 million a year, as a result of the closure of the Enquiry Centre network. Only a very small minority of HMRC’s 40 million customers ever use one of the 281 Enquiry Centres, and demand halved, from five million visitors in 2005/06 to fewer than two million in 2013. Some centres are now open just one day a week as a result of the sharp drop in demand. Of the customers using an Enquiry Centre in 2013, just 11 per cent needed a face-to-face appointment.

■ HMRC is discussing the impacts of these changes with staff in Enquiry Centres & unions.

Red Bull Music Academy unveil their heavyweight BESTIVAL 2014 line-up Taking its place among more than 20 stages in 10 fields of wonderment with mega soundsystems, non-stop parties and 24-hour escapism, Bestival are delighted to announce that Red Bull Music Academy will be returning to Robin Hill once again in 2014 with a mind-blowing new stage featuring a stunning altar dedicated to dance and a winged deity. Joining a throng of castaways cutting some rug from September 4th – 7th, Red Bull Music Academy has lined up some incredible daily hosts to take control of the stage and rock our Desert Island Disco, keeping you on your feet all weekend long. Rob da Bank says: “Oh wow... Am I excited about this stage in 2014! I love working with Red Bull who have been at the majority of the last 11 Bestivals in some form or other musically. We definitely share a love of underground electronic music from all over the world and this year we’ve nailed our biggest line up yet. Jackmaster and his Numbers crew are simply the best party people around right now, the total legend that is Harvey used to DJ at my club Sunday Best 15 years ago and is still the man for awe inspiring leftfield DJ sets for disco heads, Tropical is where its at right now as grime, house and bass collide in a sunshine vibe and Diplo comes straight from the main stage with his Major Lazer crew to mash up the grand finale. Seriously this is gonna be a lock out

THURSDAY – NUMBERS JACKMASTER & ONEMAN: CAN U DANCE / REDINHO (LIVE) / KOOL CLAP (LIVE) / SPENCER B2B OPTIMO FRIDAY – HARVEY’S DISCOTHEQUE HARVEY / DANIEL AVERY / PACHANGA BOYS / ERIC DUNCAN (RUB N TUG) / HUGO CAPABLANCA / JOLLY MARE / ANDRE LAOS SATURDAY - TROPICAL JME / SKEPTA / LOGAN / PREDITAH & C4 / SLIMZEE & RIKO DAN / PLASTICIAN / PLUS SPECIAL GUEST DJ EZ / ELIJAH / SKILLIAM SUNDAY - DIPLO AND FRIENDS DIPLO / KAYTRANADA / TRIPPY TURTLE / ARTWORK / MARTELO / DJ SLOW / SINJIN HAWKE

from Thursday to Monday! Check it!” A takeover by Glaswegian electronic music Mafiosi Numbers, who return to Bestival for the fourth time, kicks things off on Thursday, with Jackmaster & Oneman’s Can U Dance showcasing their four-deck manoeuvres, live sets from Redhino, and Kool Clap and Spencer going back to back with Optimo. Commenting on his return to Bestival Jackmaster said: “We've started thinking of Numbers at Bestival as a bit of a tradition within our ranks, as have myself and Oney with our b2b sets at the festival. Heavy looking forward to taking that to the next level with our 4 deck Can U Dance set and also welcoming two of our favourite DJs on the planet!” Friday sees Harvey’s Discotheque taking charge, channelling the same wide-grinned disco as his sell-out UK comeback gig with RBMA in 2012. Techno DJ du jour Daniel Avery joins in, alongside stalwarts of the sunrise anthem Pachanga Boys, while Eric Duncan brings the party-throwing antics of his NYC outfit Rub N Tug to the fray, and the ever-charismatic Berlinite Hugo Capablanca goes maximal. The Red Bull Music Academy alumni corner is repped by Jolly Mare and Andre Laos, both from the 2013 edition in New York. Speaking about his Red Bull Music Academy appearance at Bestival, Harvey said: “Having been a regular guest DJ at Rob’s original Sunday Best Party almost 20 years ago, it's a real treat to come full circle and curate my own Discotheque at Josie and Robby's Bestival, and what a theme! “We've put together a really great line-up of

DJs, some you will have heard and others that have blown my socks off when I've seen them DJ on my travels. It's an honour to play with them all for you all. I can't bloomin' wait”. Saturday’s line-up comes packing some urban heat, headed up by Boy Better Know’s JME, Skepta, and ex-Kiss FM DJ Logan Sama. They’re joined by garage poster boy Preditah with regular collaborator C4, Rinse co-founder and “Godfather of Grime” Slimzee with Riko Dan, and dubstep pioneer and early FWD fave Plastician. Saturday’s special guest comes in the form of garage royalty DJ EZ, while RBMA alumni Elijah and Skilliam go b2b for an alumni hat-trick. Bringing the weekend to a close, Sunday sees Diplo & friends take the headline slot, with appearances through the night from seasoned beatmaker Kaytranada, enigmatic remix artiste Trippy Turtle, dubstep originator Artwork and sublime selector Martelo. Rounding up Sunday’s roster, 2013 RBMA alumni DJ Slow and Sinjin Hawke weigh in. Supplementing the music, the stage will be brought to life along a ‘dance temple’ design theme, complete with totem poles and resplendent tribal miscellanea inside and out – a fitting testament to the pantheon of talent on offer. Cranking out sermons of hip-swaying hedonism, the roster brings together acts from across the spectrum, giving Academy alumni the chance to share the bill with legends for a party to end all parties, at our Desert Island Disco. ■ Disco Business:- www.bestival.net / Facebook / Twitter / Tumblr ■ TICKETS Call 0844 888 4410 or visit www.ticketline.co.uk/bestival-tickets

Looking for new homes A second exhibition featuring work by artists with autism at Dimbola Museum and Galleries proved such a hit, organisers are looking for more venues. All the artists are supported by the Way Forward Programme, an Island charity for people with physical and learning disabilities. “Once again we had a fantastic response to our ‘Through Autistic Eyes’ exhibition,” said Lee White, Programme Lead for Way Forward. “We now hope other venues will be interested in displaying some of the work, giving our artists a wonderful opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience and help them make a living from their art.” For more information, contact the project co-ordinator Mary Bowdery at info@wayforwardprogramme.co.uk, or go to www.wayforwardprogramme.co.uk.

TV STAR AT THE APOLLO

ROAD The Apollo's next production is 'Road' by Jim Cartwright, voted one of the best plays of the 20 th century in a poll by the Royal National Theatre. With a cast of 13 playing 38 characters, and a set that resembles a terraced street in Lancashire, this is one of the theatre's most challenging productions. It is set in the 1980s and introduces the audience to some of the people who live in the Road, all of whom are trying to find their own way of escaping from the recession. It is funny, upsetting, dramatic, and the language is earthy.

The play's director, Amy Burns, said: “Everyone involved in Road is enjoying the experience, and we can't wait to present it to audiences. It is one of those plays that you don't just watch, it is an experience.” 'Road' runs from May 14 to 17, and May 21 to 24. Tickets cost £7. For more information, go to www.apollotheatre.org.uk

Jeffrey Holland – who has just completed a sell out series of performances in a Ray Cooney farce in London's West End – is coming to the Isle of Wight with his new one man show, 'and this is my friend, Mr Laurel'. Jeff – still remembered for his appearances as Spike in the television comedy Hi de Hi – will be performing the play at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, for one night only, Thursday June 5. Jeff co-wrote the play with Gail Louw, and it has been performing to full houses all over the country. Set in Oliver Hardy's bedroom, the action takes place as Laurel pays his sick friend a visit, recalling their past successes, and providing a touching and funny account of their lives together. This production is presented by The Finishing Touch Company, in association with Original Theatre, Isle of Wight. Kevin Wilson, of Original Theatre, said: “It is such an honour to be working with Jeff to stage this amazing play at the lovely Apollo Theatre. And as a special treat for Islanders, Jeff has agreed that – after the interval – he will come back onto the stage for a question and answer session, so it is a great chance for the audience to get to know him and hear some stories about the people he has worked with over the years. “The Apollo is a small venue, and tickets are already selling, so I would advise everyone to book early for this!” Tickets are £10, and can be booked online at www.wegottickets/originaltheatre.

Eric George Ackermann GM was born on the Isle of Wight in 1919 and became a leading figure in the world of signals and electronic intelligence. He made numerous flights over occupied territory searching for, monitoring and destroying Germany's radar systems. Much of his research was passed to the highest levels of wartime government, and was highly prized, ensuring that tactical plans could be executed that took full advantage of known, top secret German intelligence. This new and engaging biography explores the various highs and lows of his operational deployment at the vanguard of tactical intelligence operations. Winner of the George Medal for conspicuous gallantry, his efforts weren't confined to the offices of war. He saw conflict up close and personal, and was therefore aware of the urgency of his endeavours, and the extent to which his findings made a difference. The end of the war did not signal the end of Ackermann's role, far from it. Yet, despite the might and scale of his achievement, he has never before been the subject of a book-length study. The authors, Peter Jackson and David Haysom, have made every effort to rectify that in this new publication which is sure to appeal to aviation enthusiasts, as well as the more general reader curious to gain new insights into twentieth century intelligence practices and their often far-reaching consequences.

PLANS FOR ISLAND MUSIC HUB TO BE DISCUSSED Plans for the Island’s Music Education Hub to become the focus of high quality music provision on the Isle of Wight are to go before the Isle of Wight Council’s Executive on Tuesday 6 May. The hub has a new chairperson who is committed to developing music provision across the Island. The council is confident that a sustainable self-funding thriving music offer can be established for the Island by the hub, by emphasising the wealth of talent and expertise among the musicians on the Isle of Wight. The council carried out a consultation during March and April to gather views on how the music service could be delivered on the Island in the future. It was clear from the consultation that there was a desire for children and young people to continue to receive quality music tuition. The ensemble activities available through the music centre are also highly valued. The council plans to work with its partners in the hub to develop a sustainable model for the delivery of the music hub and ensure the continuance and

development of opportunities for music tuition to young people across the Island. The hub will have the opportunity to bid for a further period of funding in the autumn, and this offers the hub partners a platform for a reinvigorated musical learning partnership for the Isle of Wight. Councillor Richard Priest, Executive member for children’s services and education, said: “People on the Island are clearly very passionate about music and the positive impact it has on young people’s personal development. We think there is a real opportunity for the hub to develop into something far richer than the current offer. I appreciate the hard work and dedication that the Music Service staff have put into their fantastic support to Island children over the years. With support from the local community, the hub has the potential to offer a wider range of musical tuition to a wider range of people. I believe the proposals being put before the Executive are the start of very exciting times for musicians on our Island, and will provide a viable and sustainable way forward.”

Partnership working targets rogue traders The Isle of Wight Council Trading Standards Service and Hampshire Police have been working together to help residents avoid being targeted by rogue traders. Rogue traders are individuals or groups of people who cold-call householders, often targeting vulnerable residents, claiming to be a legitimate business and offering goods or services, most commonly buildings maintenance and repair. The offenders often charge excessive fees for the work, yet the work that is carried out is either sub-standard or not carried out at all. During April, police and trading standards officers have been carrying out an awareness campaign and have recently held a road show at Tesco and Morrison’s superstores. There they talked to over 400 shoppers with information about doorstep crime and scams. Officers also visited homes in Wootton, East Cowes and Porchfield with stickers which residents display to indicate that they do not buy goods and services at the door. These are known as No Cold Calling Zones and residents are given information to ensure that they know what to do if they are visited by traders attempting to sell them goods or services. In total, 233 homes were visited which brings the total number of

homes within a No Cold Calling Zone on the Island to just under 29,000. Inspector Paul Savill from Hampshire Police said: “Although doorstep crime is not widespread on the Isle of Wight, people should always be vigilant. "Rogue traders often target the vulnerable and we are working very closely with the council's trading standards team to raise the awareness of doorstep crime and what to do if you are targeted to prevent you from becoming a victim." Amanda Gregory is the council's regulatory services manager added: "The simple message from trading standards is to always say no to any traders offering to carry out work who unexpectedly turn up on your doorstep. "The exercise to raise awareness of doorstep crime was very successful and we will continue to work with the police to tackle the actions of rogue traders." ■ If you receive a cold call at your door by someone attempting to sell you goods or services, contact trading standards on (01983) 823371 or the police on 101 or 999 in an emergency and provide as much detail as possible such as description, any vehicles they were using and registration numbers.

NO FLOATING BRIDGE DURING RANDOMEE Due to ongoing essential maintenance, the Cowes floating bridge is unlikely to be back until service until early next week (week commencing 5 May). Isle of Wight Council have apologised for any inconvenience caused. Diversions remain in place for

motorists. Council officials will provide an update on when it is due to return to service when available. The 2014 Randonnee will take place on Sunday 4th May. This year's rides should be in an clockwise direction and there will be a choice of 100km and 55km rides.

£35m school is not fit for purpose The Isle of Wight is facing its biggest public procurement scandal ever as councillors are told that the newly built £35m Cowes Enterprise College which opened last September (2013) a year late, needs £9 million of remedial work to fix leaking roofs and make it fit for purpose. The process has seen two former officers leave the Council’s employment with unspecified substantial payoffs after disciplinary action against them was dropped. The Chief Executive of the Council also left last year as have most of the other officers involved in the project. The Leader of the Council at the time the project was commissioned and built lost his seat in May 2012. Cllr Chris Whitehouse (Conservative, Newport West) who speaks on Education for the Conservative Group of Isle of Wight Councillors said: “The construction of this great

white elephant is the biggest public procurement scandal in the history of the Island. The school is half empty, has leaking roofs and is frankly not fit for purpose. It will stand for decades as a monument to the vanity of those who commissioned it and the incompetence of those who delivered it late and riddled with faults. The contractors have gone bust and cannot be pursued for compensation. “What is more” points out Cllr Whitehouse “the Island has a staggering 3,000 surplus high school places. This new school was simply not needed in the first place.” A public meeting, chaired by the Editor of the Isle of Wight County Press, Alan Marriot, was arranged last week (28th April), at Cowes Enterprise College so that the whole Island could be made aware of the scale of the disaster.

Support confirmed for Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) has confirmed that Rolex will be supporting the Club’s Bicentenary Regatta, the spectacular international sailing event that will celebrate 200 years of the historic club’s existence in July 2015. The multi-format regatta which takes place from 25th to 31st July 2015 in the UK’s Solent will attract yachts both large and small, classic and modern, from J-Class to J80 by offering a choice of racing fleets for competitors to take part in. The announcement of Rolex’s participation coincides with the release of the confirmed Notice of Race and entry forms. Entries are already coming in from amongst the 25 clubs invited from 19 countries around the world, specially selected by the RYS in recognition of friendships that have evolved through mutual and reciprocal sailing activities over many years. Invitations have also been extended to the Cowes Combined Clubs. The whole event will consist of four days of inshore racing from either the Squadron line or a committee vessel with also a clockwise Race Around the Island (RATI). Competing club teams can charter a pair of J80s from a local fleet of twelve for the Bicentenary Team Racing event or charter one of a fleet of 25 Beneteau First 40s designed by Bruce Farr which are being provided to create a level rating class. Charter packages have been prepared by the Squadron and are available to members of the invited clubs. The bulk of the inshore racing fleet, however, will be made up of the IRC class in rating bands 1.050 to 1.850, allowing for yachts ranging from typically 40ft to supermaxi racer whose numbers will be limited to 200 yachts, either owned by members of the selected clubs or chartered.

The Race Around the Island is set to be the most breathtaking spectacle of the UK 2015 sailing calendar when the inshore fleets will be joined by an additional number of larger maxi yachts, sailing superyachts, and multihulls whose ratings are higher than those of the inshore rating bands, many of which will have just arrived in the UK after taking part in the Transatlantic Race from Newport, Rhode Island a few weeks previously. There will also be trophies for two-boat teams competing within the IRC class. Rear Commodore Yachting David Aisher commented “The Bicentenary Regatta next year will be a fitting tribute to the Royal Yacht Squadron’s close involvement in yachting since its inception. The varied fleets will represent years of continual development in the yachts themselves and the equipment that they carry. The owners and their crews will bring together the many international relationships that have developed over the two centuries of our existence. It will be a celebration of yachting at its best. We look forward to welcoming all who are coming and the competition on the water that will take place.” The regatta programme is now well advanced. A packed schedule of social events includes an aerial display by the Red Arrows and a parachute display by the Red Devils will both take place during the event. A Regatta Ball is to be held at Osborne House. The RYS has put a strong emphasis on corinthian racing. The J80 crews will each have a maximum age of 30 while the Bénéteau First 40 level rating class stipulates that crews, all Cat 1 (non professional), must be members of the invited club, or their close family members, and one crew member at least must be under 25 and at least one must be female.

Special delivery to local charity, Pop ‘n’ Grow Local mum, Paula Smith, appeared on the Mother’s Day Special of ITV’s Surprise Surprise. Paula, the founder of baby charity, Pop ‘n’ Grow, was recognised on the popular Sunday night show for her inspirational achievement in helping families with premature and sick babies in special care baby units across the country. Paula’s charity, Pop ‘n’ Grow, supply free, specially modified clothing to babies in intensive care. Paula’s idea for the design of the clothes stemmed from taking care of her own precious daughter, Amelia, while she was being cared for in intensive care in 2011 at St Mary’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The clothes are designed to allow parents to bond with their child through touch. The physical act of dressing their baby in brand new, attractive clothing that magically fit around the wires and tubes that keep their precious child safe, is a treasured moment. Thus allowing a little bit of ‘normal’ bonding in what is often a very terrifying and

confusing time in parents’ lives. ITV’s Surprise Surprise wanted to celebrate Paula’s inspirational charity and approached Chichester based, Carte Blanche, to lend its support. As both businesses develop ‘tiny’, precious and baby safe products, Carte Blanche saw the natural synergy between its Tiny Tatty Teddy brand and the Pop ‘n’ Grow charity. The cute and classic Tiny Tatty Teddy range features super-soft baby-safe plush, which can be given to even the smallest of babies. Carte Blanche are making an extra special delivery to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s Hospital on Wednesday 23rd April 2014 and will be meeting with recently retired Matron Pamela George who supported Paula when her daughter was in the NICU in 2011 and who also appeared on the Surprise Surprise show. Carte Blanche are looking forward to delivering 1,000 Tiny Tatty Teddy bears wearing Pop n Grow outfits to the hospital for Paula to use to support her charity.

FLOOD SUPPORT FOR ISLAND RESIDENTS Households and businesses affected by recent flooding are being reminded of a range of financial support that is being made available by the government via the Isle of Wight Council. Many homes and businesses were flooded between December and February, especially in coastal towns and in February the government announced ways in which it would support those affected. Support available via the Isle of Wight Council includes: - grants of up to £5,000 for households or businesses flooded since 1 December 2013, specifically to fund additional flood resilience or resistance measures; - business rate flooding relief of 100 per cent for up to three months; - council tax discounts of up to 100 per cent for up to three months for flooded homes;

- grants of up to £1,000 for small and medium sized businesses which were impacted by the floods since 1 December and suffered a significant loss of trade; - grants for farm businesses to help restore flooded agricultural land and bring it back into production as quickly as possible. Full details of each scheme, and details of how to apply, can be found on the council’s website at http://iow.me/1j Councillor Ian Stephens, leader of the council, said: “Many homes and businesses were severely damaged due to this winter’s terrible weather, particularly in our coastal towns. “I would urge anyone whose home or business was affected by last winter’s flooding to check the website for information and apply for the financial support being made available by the government.”

WALL TO WALL SUPPORT FOR CHARITY TREK A sponsored trek across Hadrian’s Wall has received a cash boost from an unlikely namesake. F W Winter and Sons garage in Havenstreet has donated £250 to the Way Forward Programme. “We are the Great Wall Motors dealer for the Island and South Coast England, and thought the challenge to walk Hadrian’s Wall was a perfect way to show our support for an Island charity” explains owner Ray Winter. Krissy Lloyd, Anna Newton, Lee White and Mandy Morritt have been training hard these last few months for the gruelling 84 mile walk from Cumbria to Carlise, to raise money for the charity which supports Islanders with learning and physical disabilities, autism and mental health problems. The funds will be used to buy new equipment for their activity centre at Downside Community and Learning Centre in Newport. It will also help cover the costs of the team of support staff and volunteers who work with more than 100 people on the programme aged 14 years to retirement age. ■ Way Forward Programme provides group and 1 to 1 support sessions and runs an out-reach programme at West Wight Sports Centre. ■ You can follow the team’s progress as they train for the Hadrian’s Wall Challenge on Facebook or donate at everyclick.com/hadrianswallchallenge. ■ For more information on the activities run by Way Forward visit the website www.wayforwardprogramme.co.uk.

Energy switching times to halve by end of year Switching energy supplier is set to become much quicker, with energy companies confirming they are committed to slashing switching times by 50 per cent by the end of the year. This will reduce the time it takes to switch energy supplier from five weeks to around two and a half weeks. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey challenged energy suppliers back in October 2013 to reduce switching times dramatically, as part of the Government’s work to help energy customers get the benefits of increased competition, and called on the industry to work collaboratively to bring about major change as soon as possible. This is the first key result from that work. Ed Davey said: “Faster switching is the latest in the many steps we’ve taken to improve the poorly performing energy markets we inherited from Ed Miliband in 2010. With more suppliers, simpler bills and less complex tariffs than in 2010, switching can now save some people hundreds of pounds off their energy bills. So we wanted to make it faster to switch, as well as easier, and now we know we can. Energy UK, energy companies and relevant industry bodies have now completed the work on proposals to modify electricity and gas codes which will allow faster switching. Switching hub changes are expected in November, with the industry on track to start offering customers faster switching by the end of 2014. 24 hour switching will be supported by the rollout of Smart Meters, the majority of which are expected to be installed by energy suppliers between 2015 and 2020.

EXECUTIVE TO DISCUSS INVESTING IN THE COMPLETION OF CEC The Isle of Wight Council’s Executive is to make recommendations to Full Council about investing in the completion of Cowes Enterprise College when it meets on Tuesday 6 May. The Isle of Wight Council’s focus remains the outcomes being achieved by Island pupils but recognises the need to address the inherited problems associated with this flagship school building. The Executive will take an important step when it considers the results of a study it commissioned to identify the extent of the work needed to complete the project. The study, prepared by Hampshire County Council Property Services, was ordered by the Isle of Wight Council after the main contractor for the project went into administration and its parent company filed for bankruptcy leaving the council with the challenge of completing the building contract. A challenge that was compounded by the bespoke nature of the building design and difficulties experienced during the initial construction phases. The current administration is keen that that the details of the required works are fully considered by the Executive and then the Full Council to properly inform the actions the council must take to complete the project which began on site in 2011. The report outlines initial cost estimates for essential works, separated into three categories: - Essential completion works – including design and completion of demolition of the former school building and installation of pitches, landscaping works, defect rectification. - Essential statutory works – including accessibility and fire compliance surveys and associated adaptations and works, mechanical and electrical defects investigations and rectification

- Essential other works – including investigation into roof leaks and associated repairs, problems with windows and doors, and acoustics investigation and adaptation Estimates for the essential completion and statutory works range from £3.4 million to £4.1 million and for the other works range from £1.4 million to £4.8 million. The Executive will consider recommending to Full Council how much the council should seek to invest in the first of a two stage approach to addressing all of the works identified in the study. Councillor Richard Priest is the Executive member responsible for education and said: “This council is committed to improving children’s services and education and much progress has been made in the past year. We have a duty to do all we can to give our children the best possible start in life and for this reason it is important that we continue to invest in this project to bring it to completion. “I have written to all schools and colleges on the Island acknowledging the implications that this recommendation will have, and an independently chaired meeting at Cowes Enterprise College has been arranged to ensure the community is involved in the decision making process, and this meeting will inform that process. ”In addition, I hope to work with colleagues in this authority, including the Scrutiny Committee, to implement the lessons learnt from this project and strengthen arrangements for future projects. Our partnership with Hampshire County Council has already demonstrated the value of that approach.” ■ The report can be found in the Executive agenda for Tuesday 6 May: http://iow.me/1i

Celebratory Cakes Recognise Exceptional Ambulance Service Performance The Ambulance Service management team wanted to make a small gesture to their staff to say ‘thank you’ after another challenging year which has seen them yet again achieve all of their key performance targets and also come top of the league in the national staff survey. Performance figures for the 2013 -2014 year show that the Service received over 23,000 emergency calls with ambulances reaching 80% in the life threatening calls (Red 1) and 76.40% (Red 2) of the most seriously ill and injured patients within 8 minutes and 96.75% within 19 minutes (the national response standards are 75% and 95% respectively). The service met this target for every month of the year. The NHS 111 which is also delivered by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service continues to deliver some of the best care in the country in meeting or exceeding all of our performance targets despite receiving over 55,500 calls, an increase of over 12% from last year and receiving national recognition for its ability to provide the service to a high quality standard. The Ambulance Service Management team choose to say their ‘thank you’ by commissioning two celebratory cakes from Paul Tomlinson, a Clinical Adviser working in the Integrated Care Hub, who is becoming a bit of a master baker! Chris Smith, Head of Ambulance Service and the Integrated Care Hub said: “Despite some significant challenges during the last year, we have achieved these standards. This is a team effort involving Call Handlers, Dispatchers, Clinical Support Desk, Operational Paramedics & Emergency Vehicle Operatives, Clinical Support Officers, Performance Support Officers, as well as those who support the smooth running of the Service, including Fleet Management, Stockers & Washers, Administration, Resourcing and Stores. This is a fully dedicated team whose main focus is providing a high quality of care when and where it’s needed. “This has truly been a whole team effort driven by our staff’s commitment to deliver the best service they can to the people of our island and our visitors. Their efforts have again proved that we have a first class service. One that we should all be rightly proud of. We are committed to making further improvements and are doing all that we can to enhance patient care further. On behalf of the management team we would like to express our sincere thanks to our fantastic staff for your hard work, dedication and commitment to ensuring these standards are achieved, thereby ensuring those patients most in need receive a timely response.” Each cake depicts the Isle of Wight with the Service crest in the middle; one is surrounded by a telephone headset and is for ambulance staff in the Integrated Care Hub, and the other has a stethoscope around the crest for the operational and support staff. The cakes will be cut up and boxed and offered to staff as a gesture of gratitude from the senior ambulance management team. The idea for the cakes, which were paid for personally by the Ambulance Service managers, came from Shaun Carter, Assistant Head of Ambulance (operations).

Further measures to ensure “PO41” Yarmouth’s first Artisan Coffee House highways dug up by third parties are re-instated to a high standard Island Roads is to introduce increased measures to ensure highways dug up by third parties are re-instated to a high standard. In addition to the visual inspections already undertaken by Island Roads, the test – called coring – involves carefully removing samples from a recently reinstated highway and checking the sample to ensure the replacement work is of suitable quality. All work carried out on the highway network, such as work by utility companies or the dropping of kerbs, will be subject to the new coring process. Checking that the quality of reinstatement is both up to standard and compatible with the existing highway helps preserve the lifespan of the network as poor or unsuitable re-

instatement can weaken the road and lead to surface deterioration and potholes. Island Roads is working closely with all those who carry out works on the highway network to ensure they are aware of the required reinstatement standards. However, it does have the power to ensure substandard work is brought up to scratch if necessary. “The Highways PFI will, over a sevenyear period, improve the condition of virtually all of the Island’s highways network. It is important that work by third parties does not compromise this improvement,” said Island Roads Network Manager Kevin Burton “Using coring to check the quality of third party works will help ensure all activities undertaken on the highway network are up to a high standard.”

Isle of Wight food production must be safeguarded Welcoming a new Isle of Wight food and drink accreditation scheme, the CLA has emphasized the importance of safeguarding food production on the island. The Wight Marque was launched at the Cowes Food Show on 27 April by the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society and is part sponsored by Red Funnel. Belinda Walters, CLA Director Isle of Wight, said: “The CLA welcomes the launch of the Wight Marque and the potential benefits of the new scheme for rural landowners and businesses. CLA members on the Isle of Wight produce and sell fantastic food and drink from vegetables and meats to cheeses and wines, and of course garlic. The Wight Marque will help encourage widespread recognition of the high quality of Isle of Wight food. “Initiatives such as the Wight Marque showing the provenance of food can help consumers to re-connect with the land and how food is produced, as well as to recognise the importance of local food production. It will also help to encourage local businesses throughout the food chain to work together; by supporting local businesses the Island’s economy is helped. “Farming and food production are central

to the Isle of Wight economy, and the CLA is working to support and protect these industries wherever possible. It is critical that local authorities and the rural community work together to ensure that food producers have a safe future. “Key priorities for the CLA on the Isle of Wight include our campaigns for farmers to have reliable access to water supplies safeguarded for the future; for crops and animals to have the best possible protection from invasive diseases; and for farmers across the UK to receive a fair deal from Europe.”

Come mid May, the Island’s beautiful Yarmouth will be home to an exciting new artisan coffee house, the first for the ancient harbour town following the recent trend spreading rapidly from London. Conveniently positioned on Quay St, the coffee house will be known as PO41, acknowledging both the heritage of its Yarmouth postcode and familiar positioning at the old post office. Inspired by the vibrant Artisan Coffee culture revolutionising London’s café scene, Aiden and Louise Collins intend to create a contemporary café experience that is both intimate and atmospheric. The concept is uncomplicated: “We want to keep it simple and consistent and execute it exceptionally well!” (Aiden) “We will be dedicated to serving gourmet coffee, a select range of luxury loose leaf teas and a delicious array of our own sweet and savoury treats.” (Aiden). Whilst Louise and Aiden already own Chessell Pottery Barns and Café, a cream tea destination on the Island in its own right, PO41 will focus on the refined artistry of coffee making. The coffee will be sourced from the award winning artisan hand roaster, Union. With renowned Island chef Bridget Wells (Head chef at Chessell Café) on their doorstep, all things nice to eat at PO41 will be sourced within the PO41 postcode (from the newly built production kitchen at Chessell). Ironically set to open just after the Island’s first Starbucks, PO41 is a family business and stands in stark contrast to the mass ideals of the corporate giant. Investing more than £60,000 of their own hard yard, Louise and Aiden have gone out on a limb to share their passion for coffee with the Island. “As locals, we understand the significance of supporting and being a part of the local community.” (Louise) With this is mind, central to their ethos is the idea that PO41 will give back to the postcode in which it serves. Not only will the new coffee house generate jobs and source much of its produce locally, it will be a space for local artists to display their work. PO41 residents will also benefit from exclusive offers such as a ‘festy discount’, available during those crazy holiday periods - the first of which will be Yarmouth’s popular ‘Old Gaffers’, which takes place only a few weeks after PO41’s opening.

Ofsted declares Christ the King College could be just twelve months away from Outstanding Ofsted inspectors, who visited the College only 20 months after their previous visit in July 2012, have described Christ the King as “a good school, with key leaders relentless in their drive for excellence and with teachers throughout the college very conscientious and highly committed.” The popular and oversubscribed school was said to be “knocking very loudly on the door of outstanding.” Pat Goodhead, Principal, paid tribute to the teaching staff, the vast majority of whom are described by inspectors as having “high expectations, good subject knowledge, keep themselves updated about new developments and readily share their expertise with each other.” Inspectors also reported that the college, which now has a full and growing Sixth Form where no teaching was found to be less than good, has outstanding capacity to continue to build on its achievements. Inspectors were particularly impressed by the excellent quality of the college’s sixth form and the speed with which it has been so successfully established. The report states that, “Leadership and management of the Sixth Form are outstanding” and “courses tailored to students’ individual current and future needs are in place.” The report also praises the rigorous monitoring of students’ performance in the sixth form, the effective one-to-one tutorial system and the high quality of teaching. Guidance towards future pathways is also described in the report as excellent with over two thirds of the current Year 13 already in receipt of good offers of university places. Teaching was found to be typically good across the college with many examples of outstanding practice. As a result of such good teaching, achievement is good and the already good standards are rising in the vast majority of subjects. Furthermore, Ofsted stated how good achievement is for all students at the college, regardless of age, ability or background: for students from Year 7 through to Year 13; for the most able and for those students for whom learning is a significant challenge for a range of reasons; for those students long established at the College and new students; within both vocational and academic subjects; for students in receipt of Pupil Premium. Such inclusivity is completely at one with the College’s ethos where every individual, regardless of background, is supported to achieve. Speaking of the staff, Pat Goodhead stated, “The College is blessed with highly skilled, committed and conscientious colleagues whose practice is undeniably outstanding. Where there is less than good teaching and inconsistency of practice, we are working together to address those issues, using the highly prevalent best practice across the College as models to share and support those colleagues.” Inspectors also found the overwhelming majority of students exhibited positive

attitudes to learning and were keen to do well, showing a resilience and determination to succeed. Inspectors were high in their praise of the students’ behaviour, finding them smart, calm and polite with the college promoting high standards of behaviour. The report also stated that, “The overwhelming majority of parents would recommend the college to others.” Principal Pat Goodhead, who is described in the report as “an inspirational leader, unstinting in seeking excellence and who has created a shared vision for the college,” has thanked all parents and carers for their support in making Christ the King College such an excellent school and has paid tribute to staff, students and governors for their ongoing support. Pat Goodhead expressed some disappointment that Ofsted visited before the college so soon since its last visit. Commenting on this, she said, “The visit was unexpected and proved to be challenging and very robust. Given the very good results of our previous Ofsted visit in July 2012, such a return visit would not normally be expected for at least 3 years. This would, of course, have given us the necessary time to secure our third set of GCSE results this August and, importantly, our first set of A Level results; it would also, hopefully, have given us the time and additional exam result evidence to secure the outstanding judgement to which we are relentlessly working. However, I am absolutely delighted with this report. Once again, it recognises what a truly good school Christ the King College really is and identifies extremely clearly what we need

to do to secure the outstanding judgement. Actions were already in place to move forward on these important areas and we look forward to a very exciting and successful future. Ofsted’s visit has also validated our new sixth form as outstanding, a wonderful accolade for the young people in the sixth form and those aspiring to be part of it in the future.” The Ofsted visit to the college, seemingly prompted by the development of its new sixth form, certainly found much to praise. Also of particular note in the report is the breadth of curriculum the college offers, the accurate knowledge that leaders have of the school and the strength of the Governing Body who, throughout this remarkable journey of Christ the King College, continue to bring support and challenge to its work. David Lisseter, the Chair of Governors, expressed his pride in the college and the relentless work of all the staff to provide the very best education for the wonderful young people who make up the strong community. He describes the College as “a very special place indeed.” Cllr Chris Whitehouse, who represents the ward of Newport in which Christ the King is located and also speaks for the Conservative Group of Councillors on education today added: “This is a great report. Christ the King remains the only ‘good’ school on the Island and it is fantastic that already its Sixth Form is acknowledged as good with outstanding leadership and management. Well done to the leadership team, the staff and, above all, the students. Be proud of yourselves!”

DIANNE THOMPSON LEAVES CAMELOT Camelot has announced that Dianne Thompson CBE has decided to retire on 31 October 2014 after 14 years as Group CEO and 17 years with the company. During this time, she has led the company to become one of the world’s most successful lottery operators, fought and won two licence competitions, secured a four-year extension to the current licence to 2023, raised billions of pounds for National Lottery Good Causes, and made a truly life-changing difference to people and communities across the UK. Over the next six months, the group will be separated into two clear functions to ensure the best possible platform for continued future growth, both in the UK and overseas. Andy Duncan – MD of the UK business since 2011 – will become CEO of Camelot UK Lotteries Limited (CUKL), and Nigel Railton – currently Group CFO and Strategy Director – will become CEO of Camelot Global Services Limited. Both will take up their new positions on 31 October 2014 and will report in to Lee Sienna, the Chairman of the Camelot Group of Companies. Dianne, Andy and Nigel will work closely with employees across the group to finalise the enhanced structure. Lee Sienna, Chairman, said: “Dianne Thompson’s contribution to Camelot and the worldwide lottery sector has been immense. Under her leadership, the UK National Lottery has gone from strength to strength – with long-term sales growth of over 35% and more than £21 billion raised for National Lottery Good Causes during her time as Chief Executive. She leaves a lasting legacy, with the group in the best possible position to build on her achievements. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Dianne for her dedication, drive and unrivalled business acumen over the past 14 years. “A vibrant and flourishing UK National Lottery will continue to remain at the very heart of Camelot’s operations, with the group also looking to add to its growing portfolio of interests outside of the UK. In appointing two CEOs with the calibre and experience of Andy Duncan and Nigel Railton, there will be a seamless transition to the next chapter of Camelot’s history.” Dianne Thompson said: “I have always said that running Camelot has been my dream job, and I will look back over the last 14 years with great fondness and pride. I feel privileged to have worked with such fantastic colleagues, who have always put National Lottery players – and the Good Causes we ultimately support – at the heart of everything we do. Through their energy and creative drive, we have grown sales, and therefore revenues for National Lottery projects, over the long term. Having successfully broken into the fiercely-competitive global lotteries market, the group is also on a great footing to fulfil its long-term international growth aspirations. “In Andy Duncan and Nigel Railton,

backed by the continued long-term support of Camelot’s owner, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (Teachers’), I leave the group in very talented, experienced and committed hands. Under their leadership, I know that the business – soon to be two businesses – will flourish.” Dianne had initially planned to leave the company in 2012 but, at the request of Teachers’, agreed to continue in her role in order to devise and implement the group’s ambitious international growth strategy, while further developing the UK strategy. She has agreed to make herself available to Camelot in a consultative capacity, while pursuing her other business and charitable interests. Andy Duncan said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to build on all of Dianne’s achievements, which have seen Camelot become a world-leading multi-channel lottery operator. We already lead the world in digital lottery innovation and this will become even more of a key focus in the years ahead. I am very excited at the prospect of leading such a talented team as we continue to deliver on The National Lottery’s promise to be truly lifechanging for both winners and society.” Having worked very closely with Dianne on the UK business over the last two and a half years, Andy is ideally placed to take over as CEO of CUKL. He recently orchestrated the successful launch of new Lotto – the first substantive change to The National Lottery’s flagship game since it launched in 1994 – which has turned around the game’s long-term sales decline. He has also overseen a massive expansion in The National Lottery’s digital services – including the launch of a new mobile platform and engaging apps, a growing social media presence, and the creation of a bespoke ‘digital team’, which is working on the imminent launch of an entirely new online platform. Andy will continue to lead this ongoing programme of digital transformation to ensure that the UK National Lottery, as it has done since launch in 1994, continues to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing digital landscape and in the face of ever-increasing competition – and continues to deliver for players, the Good Causes it supports and UK society as a whole for the next 20 years and beyond. Nigel Railton said: “Dianne’s reputation across the lottery world is unrivalled. Her commitment to the UK National Lottery and wider lottery industry has been unwavering, as has her dedication to seeing the sector grow responsibly. Having worked very closely with her for the last 16 years, I am indebted to Dianne for all of her guidance – especially as we have pressed ahead with our global expansion plans. With a number of international consultancy contracts won and some ambitious plans on the horizon, this is a really exciting time for Camelot Global – and I’m very much looking forward to building on these successes.”

FAMILY DIRECTORY WEBSITE GIVEN NEW LOOK An online family information website, run by the Isle of Wight Council, has been given a makeover to make it easier for families to navigate and find information. WightChYPS, the latter part of which stands for children and young people services, is a family information directory for the Isle of Wight. It can be accessed by logging on to www.iwight.com/wightchyps. Known as a 'FIDy', it is a comprehensive online information bank of all types of children’s and young people’s services available in a local area. This information includes a broad range of services from providers in voluntary, private and statutory sectors. The information contained on WightChYPS is managed by the council's Family Information Zone (FIZ) service. The website has been given a new bright colourful look and made more user friendly. This includes re-designing the homepage to make each section

easy to find and utilising a search facility to enable users to narrow the parameters of the information they are looking for. Popular documents such as the Holiday activity guide and the newsletter for children and young people with additional needs can still be downloaded from the WightChYPS website. Recently, FIZ also launched its own Facebook page where it posts information for families such as upcoming events and other services available. ■ Anyone with a Facebook profile can like the page at www.facebook.com/iwfiz.

ISLAND ROADS LAUNCHES APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME Island Roads has launched its 2014 Apprenticeship Scheme and is looking for hardworking, enthusiastic individuals who thrive in team environments and enjoy working outside. The Island Roads 2014 Apprenticeship Scheme has been designed to introduce young people from the Isle of Wight to the working world and develop them into skilled employees with a career prospect in improving the Island’s road network. Apprentices will be supported to obtain nationally recognised NVQ Level 2 qualifications in Highways Maintenance (Construction) and Highways Maintenance (Excavation Operations). The scheme runs for two years and will be a combination of seminar-based delivery and on-site experience, with a permanent job on successful completion of the apprenticeship. The scheme will include regular residential elements based at specialist colleges either in Exeter or York so a willingness to travel is essential. Paul Herbert, Island Roads Service Director, said: “As an Island company we are delighted to be offering further training and employment opportunities to local people. We recruited six apprentices last September and have been particularly pleased with their commitment and enthusiasm and look forward to welcoming more apprentices to the team. “These positions will provide guaranteed employment opportunities for young people on the Island and our graduate

programme will provide further opportunities for young people who want to develop their skills and capabilities.” 16-year-old apprentice Jacob Pelletier who joined the company in September 2013 said: “The training I have undertaken and the range of tasks I have worked on makes me really excited about a future career in the highway industry. “The scheme is a really good mix of theory and practical training and I’m really pleased with the amount I have learnt in just over six months.” Training schemes for apprentices and graduates will be run by Island Roads every year throughout the first seven years of the contract and aim to ensure a skilled engineering workforce is created for the future. ■ For further details of how to apply, visit: www.islandroads.com

Improvement works to benefit patients and staff at St Mary's A wide range of improvement works are underway across St Mary’s Hospital to enhance the quality of patient care and provide better working environments for Isle of Wight NHS Trust staff. Work is already underway to create a bright new discharge lounge and Outpatient and Home Parenteral Infusion Therapy (OHPiT) area on Level C of the main hospital site. OHPiT is an area devoted to the care of outpatients with conditions that need long-term therapy with medications that are given intravenously, or through a needle or tube inserted into a vein. These improvement works are designed to offer greater levels of comfort to our patients. Both OHPit and the discharge lounge are due to relocated into the newly refurbished area on Level C on 25 April, when the main ward area will also be improved by installing more ensuite shower rooms and single-sex accommodation. Dementia friendly wards Another major project getting underway this month is the creation of the hospital’s first dementia friendly wards. The Trust has received government funding to improve the flooring, decoration, signage and lighting on Appley and Colwell Wards. The work began in Appley Ward on 7 April and is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete. Matron for Appley Ward, Tracy Cloke, is among those behind the project: “We all know that coming into hospital is a stressful time for everyone, but for those with dementia it can be a bewildering and terrifying experience. This work aims to reduce some of the anxiety by providing an environment which is more relaxing and easier to understand for those with dementia.” Among the dementia friendly aspects of the new wards will be colour coded doorways. For example, research has shown that using the colour yellow for shower rooms and toilet facilities helps dementia patients to recognise them more easily. Doors that are only for use by staff will blend in with the surrounding area, to ensure only doors to patient areas stand out. And Tracy explains some of the benefits to patients: “As part of the work, the lighting within the wards will be renewed to mimic daylight, as this has been shown to reduce falls and confusion among those with dementia, whilst also making it easier to work in for staff. There will also be easy to read, consistent signage throughout the wards, both in written and pictorial form. The improvements will also provide a modern, yet professional working environment for staff.” Service Manager for the Memory Service, Sian Bayer, said: “The Dementia

Friendly Environment work being undertaken within the hospital links with a wider project which extends to the community and involves independently run nursing and residential care homes. Both the hospital and these community settings are benefitting from clear signage, good quality lighting and flooring, as well as art work, outside spaces and gardens. The projects are being overseen by myself and Project Manager, Linda Keighley, as we are sponsoring and managing the programme on behalf of the Trust. The improvements are good for those with dementia, but also have wider benefits for everyone who needs to use these facilities.” In future, the Trust is looking to roll out dementia friendly schemes to all appropriate areas of the hospital. Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) upgrade Once the Dementia friendly wards have been completed, another major project will get underway this summer to improve our Medical Assessment Unit. This is an area which manages the flow of emergency medical admissions into the hospital. Capital Planning and Development Manager, Rob Graham, said: “These improvement works will include a full internal reconfiguration and upgrade, as well as two, singlestorey extensions. It will be a completely new unit and transform the current rather cramped accommodation.” The improvement work to the Medical Assessment Unit is expected to end in March 2015. Critical care co-location During the summer, work will begin to co-locate our two critical care services, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU), onto one site. Putting together our most critically ill patients on one site means they can be cared for by clinicians sharing the same working environment, leading to benefits for both patients and staff. We expect this phase of work to be completed by February 2015. Trust Chief Executive, Karen Baker, said: “This large programme of improvement works will bring great improvements to both the quality of patient care we can deliver, and improvements to the working environment for many of our staff. We will, of course, do the best we can to keep noise and disruption to a minimum and, acting on previous feedback from patients, we are ensuring we accommodate them in suitable areas of the hospital during the works to ensure they are not affected.” “We would like to thank patients and their carers for their understanding and support whilst we take on this exciting phase of refurbishments,” she added.

PIP Assessments now underway on the Island Senior officials from Atos Healthcare and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) spoke about Personal Independence Payments (PIP) at a public meeting held at the Riverside Centre on Friday (25th April). The new PIP benefit is being phased in to replace Disability Living Allowance, but figures unearthed by Mr Turner revealed that around 100 Islanders have been facing long waits for an initial assessment. Following an appeal in local media for Islanders facing hardship whilst waiting for the assessment around 20 Islanders contacted the MPs office; all have either now been seen or have appointments for their assessment shortly, aside from one appointment that has to be rearranged. Mr Turner said: “This is known to be a problem countrywide, but it was difficult to get figures about how many Islanders were waiting as they are not reported to the Government on a constituency basis. Since I found out about the extent of the problem and have been dealing with senior people within Atos, they have worked hard to get assessments done for those people reporting that they are suffering difficulties due to the delays. These are not means-tested benefits so by no means all people will be hard up whilst waiting for the assessment and any payments due will be backdated to the date of the claim. “I know Atos are also working towards dealing with the remainder of the backlog and putting better arrangements in place for the future”

Surprise Golden ‘Thank Yous’ Anna Morgan-Crocket and husband Peter became a golden couple in an unexpected way at the annual meeting of Cowes RNLI Lifeboat Guild. Thanks to the generosity of a Godshill woman, Anna’s retirement as chairman for the past three years could be marked with a gift of a limited edition RNLI gold charm bracelet, and Peter’s RNLI work with a distinctive gold pocket watch. The items were donated on a visit to the station by Astrid West, of Lavenders Farm, Bagwich Lane, Godshill, with the request they go to people ‘who had done something very special for the station’. Lifeboat operations manager, Mark Southwell, immediately thought of Anna and Peter. The presentations to the delighted pair were made by the chairman of the Isle of Wight Lifeboat Board, Lady Sally Pigot. Astric West, who was present at the meeting, said: “My husband and I are sailors and members of the RNLI and the two items were just stuck in a drawer.” Anna also received a bouquet of flowers from the guild committee and a dinner voucher for Murray’s restaurant. In a letter to Anna, Mark (who had left on holiday before the meeting) paid tribute to all her hard work, enthusiasm and professionalism during her chairmanship. This included the ‘extraordinary effort’ she put into the new station’s £1-million appeal, and her involvement in the visit to the station of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. “And I understand what a support Peter has been to you and the RNLI.” In her annual report Anna reported that because of the country’s economic difficulties the guild had to work that much harder in the past year to raise money for the charity. The current branch profit stood at £33,593. In addition a further £20,163 was raised by the local RNLI shop. In his report to the meeting, read by deputy launch officer Nick Edwards, Mark reported that the lifeboat launched 43 times in 2013, with autumn and winter proving particularly busy. The station now had 25 boat crew, many of whom are new. “All these crew must train to the national RNLI standard and that is a mammoth task with only four helms.” He also praised the station’s shore crew for their important role. “We are not one of those stations which struggle for crew during the working day.” Courses undertaken by many crew members have included RYA Day Skipper, Casualty Care, and VHF Search and Rescue. Other volunteers have been recruited to enable the station to receive visits from individuals and groups, and visitors have included both the Lord Lieutenant, Major Gen Martin White, and High Sheriff, Mary Case, as well as parties of school children. Mark revealed that Cowes had become one of the first RNLI stations to sign-up to the RNLI’s new Sea-Safety scheme, intended to examine ways to reduce the number of drownings. Guest speaker at the annual meeting was Dan Taylor, operations manager of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, who described how they worked with the RNLI. Mary Morrison, the collection box secretary for the past ten years, was presented with a bronze badge and certificate. Elected the new guild chairman was Judy Morgan. Re-elected were: Diana Chillcott, vice chairman, Sandra Fussell, hon secretary, Carol Wootton, hon treasurer.

Group celebrates and recognises excellence in Primary Care and Commissioning Over two hundred and eighty (280) GPs, practice nurses and staff from primary health care across the Island together with staff from the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning gathered at Cowes Yacht Haven for the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Awards 2014. The awards are designed to recognise excellence in the provision of primary health care on the Island and the commissioning of services by the CCG, through a mixture of awards assessed by a panel and those voted for on the evening. Speaking after the event CCG Chair, Dr John Rivers said: “This has been a fantastic way to celebrate the CCG’s first anniversary. As the body responsible for the overall improvement of healthcare on the Island it is important that we recognise the devotion and high quality of care being delivered by those who work in general

practice surgeries – both individuals and teams – as well as those who work hard to commission the best possible healthcare services for Islanders.” Helen Shields, CCG Chief Officer says: “I am particularly proud of the recognition given to members of the CCG team. They are responsible for commissioning services to ensure that Islanders get the best possible health services. We continually strive to drive up the quality of the services we commission on behalf of Islanders and plan to ensure that services are sustainable in these challenging economic times.” Decisions about some of the awards were made by a panel in advance of the evening. Others were decided by interactive hand held voting sets providing each person attending a vote on the evening.

NEW long distance trail for the Isle of Wight A NEW long distance trail for the Island, linking all the Carnival Towns and Villages together in a single 100 mile route, for the Isle of Wight Walking Festival 2014 and for ever after! Funded by Arts Council England and supported by the IW Council as part of the Walking Festival This project celebrates The Isle of Wight as the birthplace of the English carnival tradition, and promotes the 19 summer carnivals and 6 winter parades which take place on the Island every year. For many carnival towns 2014 also marks the 125 Anniversary of their first parades! Devised by The New Carnival Company and the Walking Festival with Ali Pretty, outdoor artist, Richard White, digital artist and aided and abetted by the IW Ramblers Association, each leg of the five day walk will link iconic places and scenic landscapes in a celebration of our rich and diverse carnival heritage. Members of the public can join the whole 5 day walk, a single day, or for part of a day, according to their interests, location and fitness levels! A specially commissioned hand-painted silk banner inspired by collected stories, reminiscence and archive from each local carnival tradition will be carried on every leg of the route. As the trail approaches each carnival town, a procession of local schoolchildren, their families and friends will meet, greet and lead the walkers home, bearing smaller handmade carnival flags they have made in workshops with local artists. Richard will be creating soundscapes along the way – voices, poems, songs, recorded music and ambient noise to augment the experience. The soundscapes will be uploaded to a bespoke Carnival Trail App to be enjoyed by Trail walkers and virtual Trail walkers everywhere, for years to come. An exhibition of the flags and banners, recordings and documentation will be on display at a local arts venue after the Walking Festival. Carnival Associations, Groups and Bands from Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Cowes, Newport, Yarmouth, Freshwater and Totland, and St Helens Carnivals have all been taking part

Advised to talk before you walk Islanders and visitors needing non-urgent health advice are being urged to ‘talk before they walk’ by calling the Island’s health advice line on 111, or visiting their local Pharmacy, before visiting the Beacon Health Centre which has today been experiencing a high volume of cases. Common complaints which can be treated at home with advice from the pharmacist include: ● Skin conditions, such as mild acne and mild eczema ● Coughs and colds including nasal congestion and sore throat ● Minor cuts and bruises ● Constipation and haemorrhoids (piles) ● Hay fever and allergies ● Aches, pains, such as headaches, earaches and backaches ● Indigestion, diarrhoea and threadworms ● Period pain and thrush ● Warts, verrucas, mouth ulcer and cold sores ● Athletes foot ● Nappy rash and teething The 111 service, which is available 24hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year, should be called if medical help is needed fast, but it’s not a 999 emergency. 111 is free to call from landlines and mobiles and is staffed by a team of fully trained call advisers on the Island, supported by nurses, paramedics and doctors, who are on hand to assess callers’ needs and ensure they receive the right service as quickly as possible. It guides patients to a locally available service or provides appropriate advice and information. Unlike the mainland the NHS 111 service on the Island is fully integrated with other Island health and social care services. Advice is also available at www.nhs.uk.

Ventnor Health Walk We walk the first Friday of the month. This is a gentle walk from the car park at the High Street opposite Tesco Express at 10.15 and walk to Ventnor Park including the outdoor gym (option!) and walk back to a cuppa at the Ventnor Community Cafe (option) at around 12.00. There is a slight incline however you can go as slow as you need to. Plenty of walkers to motivate and support you . Good for the body and mind!

A welcome announcement for the Isle of Wight The Island’s MP Andrew Turner, has welcomed confirmation today that 28 of the Island’s 39 electoral divisions have been included in the Assisted Area Status map which will now go forward to the European Commission for final approval. Following that process the map will take effect in just two months time, from 1st July this year. The status will give local businesses the opportunity to bid for additional funding and tax breaks in order to protect and create jobs and invest in new premises or equipment in order to expand. The good news comes after a concerted campaign following a meeting with Business Minister, the Rt. Hon. Michael Fallon MP last year with the Island’s MP, leader of the Isle of Wight Council Cllr. Ian Stephens and Cllr. Harry Rees representing IWALC (the IW Association of Local Councils at town and parish level). At the meeting the three representatives outlined the Island’s case for inclusion in the new map which will be in place for the next seven years. Mr Turner welcomed the news, saying; “This is very much the result of all parties working together for the good of the Island. One of the very first issues Ian raised with me as Council leader was that although time was short he wanted to bid for Assisted Area Status, and that he was keen to work with me and others on a cross-party basis to achieve this. I organised the meeting with the Minister so that we could talk frankly about the challenges the Island faces as well as the opportunities we have. Written representations are important of course, but it was clear both during the meeting and from subsequent conversations that our discussions clarified to the Minister that the Island really should be included in the new map. “I’d like to pay tribute to Ian’s approach and

to Harry’s encyclopaedic knowledge of EU regulations. There are of course others who have played an important part, the Trades Unions on the Island, the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, the Chamber of Commerce and many others who have contributed to achieving this success. This is a real opportunity for growth on the Island – but it won’t just happen; Island businesses and entrepreneurs need to come up with plans that will bring jobs and growth to the local economy. I will now be working with the Council and the Government to ensure that information is made available about how businesses can access the help and capital that will become available through this announcement. It will include access to regional aid such as the Regional Growth Fund and the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative.” Speaking about the fact that the whole Island is not included in the map Mr Turner commented: “We all tried to get the whole Island included; after the draft map was published I submitted a paper, as did the Council and IWALC. However areas are included on the basis of economic opportunity as well as need; it is obvious that there is more opportunity for jobs, in greater numbers, in some areas than others. Indeed there would be an outcry if somebody suggested building a factory in the middle of our most beautiful countryside – regardless of whether it brought jobs. However, everybody living on the Island will be able to benefit from this announcement. Just because you live in Ventnor, for example it doesn’t mean you can’t get to a newly created job in Newport! Whilst it is a disappointment, it shouldn’t take the shine off of what is a considerable achievement on the Island’s journey to better economic times.”

WALKING FESTIVAL TO GET UNDERWAY THIS WEEKEND There's only a day until the 16th annual Isle of Wight Walking Festival officially launches with a special event in Newport. On Saturday 3 May in St Thomas' Square, walkers will have the chance to meet the festival’s walk leaders as well as major GPS firm Garmin, who this year became the event's title sponsor and will be demonstrating some of its GPS equipment. Some walks are being held on 2 May, with the festival running until 18 May. There are over 200 walks to choose from including the famous speed dating walk which has resulted in many love matches including five weddings and a baby. Garmin will be running an introduction to geocaching walk on Sunday 11 May which starts 2pm at Appley Park near the old golf hut. For people interested in finding out more about GPS technology, Garmin is running a special training event on Saturday 10 May at Quay Arts in Newport between 7pm and 9pm. Garmin’s team of experts will be on hand to show walkers and outdoor enthusiasts how to make the most of integrated products such as GPS wristwatches and action cameras and explain online software can be used to track and record your favourite walks. The event is free, but places are limited, to book email elaine.cesar@iow.gov.uk. This year’s festival includes a number

of new walks, including the colourful carnival trail where walking meets art and carnival and is 100 miles in distance, held over five days. The gruelling 24-hour non-stop endurance walk around the Island returns on Saturday 17 May which is for experienced walkers only. Walk leader Martin Neville will guide hikers around the Island’s coastal path in what is probably the toughest walk in the festival’s programme. For people looking to enjoy the Island’s beautiful scenery at a more leisurely pace, there are scores of gentle ambles to choose from, as well as many walks designed for children such as the tiny tots and toddlers tea party in Niton, or the rock pool safari in Bembridge or duck feeding walk in Shanklin. Full details of all the walks can be found in the Isle of Wight Walking Festival’s extensive programme or online at www.isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk Visitors to this year’s festival can also take advantage of discounted ferry fares as event sponsors Red Funnel and Wightlink are offering discounts for walkers – visit www.redfunnel.co.uk/walking and www.wightlink.co.uk/walking for details. For full details of all of this year’s walks, including the four-day autumn walking weekend in October, visit www.isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk.

FREELANCER’S FRIDAY NIGHT OUT With a growing population of creatives, freelancers and teleworkers, the Island is a popular with people able to base their work life at home. And with the spreading coverage of superfast broadband and Wi-Fi hotspots, it’s becoming easier to support that choice with communications technology. Perhaps one downside of working independently is missing out on the interaction with colleagues, informally networking and sharing ideas. And, of course, socialising with workmates after work on a Friday evening. But no more. In the lead up to Christmas, member of Ventnor Arts Club and independent consultant Liz Morris suggested organising a freelancer’s seasonal get together. The turnout was excellent and since then there’s been a call for further events. The club is now hosting a regular Freelancer’s Friday Night Out on the second Friday of each month from 8pm. While it’s unashamedly a social and networking event, there might occasionally be a

short presentation, on a relevant topic, at the beginning of the evening. The Speed Pitch must last no more than 15 minutes and if a presenter overruns, a hook will come in from the wings and the music turned back up! Any companies or organisations who would like visibility at the event are also invited to sponsor a drink or two during the evening. The emphasis is on meeting people and enjoying a relaxed evening out. If you’d like to come along to Freelancer’s Friday Night Out on the 9th May at 8pm, email your name and details to info@ventnorartsclub.com. If you’d like to present a ‘Speed Pitch’ or sponsor all or part of an event, contact stephen@ventnorartsclub.com .

Airport MD joins Solent LEP Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport, has been elected to the board of the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). He was chosen by a vote of the LEP's business members after responding to a call for Solent business leaders working in aerospace, aviation, high-end manufacturing, logistics, ports and key international gateways. Dave joined Southampton Airport in 2007 as planning and development director before becoming MD in 2010. He has developed the airport’s masterplan, which predicts how the transport hub, one of three international gateways to the Solent, will develop in the years to 2030. New LEP Director, Dave Lees, said: "The LEP has a vital role to play in delivering the economy that business needs and local people deserve. I am hugely proud to be involved and am looking forward to joining my new colleagues on the Board at such an exciting time for the LEP." Solent LEP Chairman, Gary Jeffries, said: "We were keen to appoint a senior business leader from a key sector who would

complement the existing strengths of the board and Dave fits the bill perfectly. "His huge industry experience combined with extensive knowledge of the Solent, its strengths and its challenges, make him an ideal candidate to contribute to our work in the years to come and to assist us immediately in our Growth Deal negotiations with Government." Island licensees hold 'cut the red tape' meeting Last week members of the licensee group set up by CAMRA and the Island’s MP Andrew Turner, held a meeting at the Riverside Centre in Newport to which they invited representatives of the Isle of Wight Council and Hampshire Constabulary. The Fight 4 Wight Licensees campaign, chaired by Jay Chapman of the Character Inns group, was started in January this year to help address the concerns of the licensed trade and raise with the relevant authorities issues related to running their businesses. As a result of issues related to planning, environmental health, licensing and policing being voiced by a number of members, a meeting was scheduled at the Riverside Centre for licensees to meet with representatives of the Isle of Wight Council and Hampshire Constabulary in an effort to ‘Cut the Red Tape’. Mr Turner said: “Local pubs across the country are facing challenging times and the Island is no different. Pubs provide a focus in our villages and towns for community life; indeed in some rural areas they are often the last building open for business. Some have diversified and now offer other services to the communities they serve. Working with Cllr. John Nicholson, the Chairman of CAMRA on the Island we set up a group for them to come together to share their experiences and raise their issues with those who can help resolve them. “The first meeting was chaired by County Press editor Alan Marriott. A number of the shared issues were made clear at that meeting.. A committee was formed and they have been very active in their first few months. I was very grateful that council officers, councillors and police representatives gave up their time to come to the meeting last week which I know was very useful in opening up dialogue.” Mr Chapman commented: “As Chairman, I was very pleased with the result of the first ‘Cut the Red Tape’ meeting and would like to thank all the representatives from the IOW Council; in particular Amanda Gregory, the Council’s Regulatory Service Manager, Superintendant Snow from the Hampshire Constabulary and Andrew Turner MP; we were also pleased to see local Councillors John Nicholson (representing CAMRA), John Hobart and Stuart Hutchings and would like to thank them all for their continued support of the licensing trade. “The open house meeting proved to be a success, and channels are now open to help keep IOW publicans in business. We believe this continued dialogue will allow excellent two-way communication to bring about positive outcomes for the trade. “We are looking forward to inviting everyone connected to the trade to the next ‘Cut the Red Tape’ meeting on the 10th October at 10.00am at the Riverside Centre. All the above officers have pledged to come back and take up any future issues to help keep the licensed trade in business for a brighter future for the Isle of Wight economy. If anybody is interested in getting involved in the campaign they are welcome to contact me by e-mail on fatcat007@btinternet.com, or on my mobile number which is 07833 922252”

STARBUCKS BRINGS ‘FLAT WIGHT’ TO NEWPORT The first Starbucks store on the Isle of Wight has opened, bringing 15 new jobs to Newport. To celebrate the launch, Starbucks has dubbed the popular coffee Flat White the ‘Flat Wight’. Opened in partnership with the Southampton based franchisee 23.5 Degrees, the new store, on St. James Street in Newport, brings together great coffee with a comfortable environment to relax and work. Starbucks stores are individually designed to reflect the character of the local area. Situated over two floors, the spacious and bright unique design of the Newport store retains and celebrates the original townhouse features, including reinstated original fireplaces. Starbucks coffee beans were delivered to Cowes by boat from a Starbucks store in Southampton yesterday. A special reception with complimentary coffee served by the new staff was held at the port to welcome the arrival of the coffee beans. Emma Cook, Store Manager at the new Isle of Wight Starbucks said: “I’m passionate about great coffee and when I saw the opportunity to manage the first Starbucks store on the island, I jumped at the chance to apply. I’m very excited to welcome our new customers today, and look forward to making sure everyone who comes into the store in the future – be it to work, relax or catch up with friends, will have a new store they can really enjoy. We hope everyone enjoys a Flat Wight on us today!”

Anil Patil, Managing Director at 23.5 Degrees said: “We are thrilled to open the doors of the first Starbucks on the Isle of Wight to customers today. This is the 8th store we have opened as part of our franchise deal with Starbucks and we are really enjoying working alongside a brand which mirrors our values – a commitment to caring about the people in our business, and delivering for the customer and the local community. By the end of the year we plan to have opened 12 new stores across the south of the UK, creating between 120 and 150 jobs. We think this store will add to the vibrancy of Newport and look forward to serving the local community and visitors to the Island alike. ” Jane Coleman, Director of Franchising, Starbucks UK said: “Our franchise offer gives local companies throughout the UK the opportunity to bring their own expertise and experience to our business, and gives us the chance to serve new communities. Our partnership with 23.5 Degrees drives growth for the business, creates jobs, and will provide quality coffee for customers in Newport. “Starbucks has a very young workforce, with nearly half of our employees aged under 24, an age group in the UK market which faces the highest unemployment rates. Having created 15 new local jobs and offering greater diversity to Newport’s high street, the new Starbucks store is good news for the Island.”

Damage to parked cars Police are appealing for information to an ongoing series of damages to parked vehicles in the Carisbrooke area of Newport. This has been caused by a sharp instrument being used to deliberately puncture tyres. £30m to improve the lives of vulnerable young people

Justice Minister Jeremy Wright has welcomed a new £30m fund to improve the prospects of up to 20,000 vulnerable young people launched by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg The Ministry of Justice will be contributing over a million pounds to a new initiative which will help disadvantaged young people improve their prospects and prevent them from falling into a situation where they are not in education, employment or training (NEET). Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said: “I welcome this innovative approach which will help ensure good quality education and employment opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and help in keeping them away from the criminal justice system in the first place. “More than 85% of young men in Young Offender Institutions have been excluded from school at some point, and over half of 15-17 year olds in YOIs have the literacy or numeracy level expected of a 7-11 year old. This is unacceptable, and we need to do all we can to change this. This is why we have placed education and training at the heart of our reforms to the youth justice system.”

PIP Assessments discussed at Public Meeting Last week, at the invitation of the Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, senior representatives of Atos Healthcare and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) came to the Island to talk to Islanders about the New Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit, which is being phased in to replace Disability Living Allowance. Around 30 Islanders attended the meeting, some in receipt of the benefit and others who assist others when submitting applications. David Haley, PIP Client Executive for Atos Healthcare, told those attending that this was the first time they had been asked by any Member of Parliament to hold such a meeting. He explained the process for claiming the new benefit and also apologised for the widespread delays experienced by many people in getting face to face assessments organised. He went on to explain that processes are now being put in place to ensure a much more efficient service moving forward. Following a rigorous question and answer session, those with particular personal issues about the service were invited to stay behind and were able to speak directly to the representatives about their experiences. Mr Haley said: “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr Turner for giving Atos the opportunity to present on the end to end process and current position of Personal

Independence Payments on the Island. To hear the questions and concerns first hand from people who have experience of PIP gives me and my team the opportunity to understand where our service is working and what we need to do to improve. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to meet us, ask us questions and listen to what we had to say.” Mr Turner said: “I was concerned to learn that over 100 people on the Island were awaiting PIP assessments. Therefore I invited senior officials down to the Island to explain what had gone wrong and what is being done to resolve the problems. “Everyone at the meeting had the opportunity to ask questions and the feedback was that it was very useful both to Islanders frustrated with the delays but also to the officials who were able to gain an ‘on the ground’ understanding of how people perceived their services. “Everybody who has contacted me saying they are suffering financial difficulty as a result of the delays has now either been seen or has an appointment booked, and much work is being done to ensure better service to Islanders in the future. Following consultations with Atos there will be further announcements on this issue as things move forward.”

CARNIVAL ARTS PARTNERSHIP IS LAUNCHED New arts partnership is unveiled to raise the profile of Carnival and the benefits it brings to communities A pioneering partnership of UK carnival arts organisations was officially launched last night at an event in central London by Peter Bazalgette, the Chair of the Arts Council, and Colin Salmon, James Bond screen actor. The event saw an array of fantastic Carnival performances from a wide spectrum of genres including African folk singers, dancers and a Calypso band entertaining assembled guests from the world of arts, politics, charity and industry. In a collaborative first for the sector, the consortium of Carnival Arts partners consists of four Carnival organisations including The New Carnival Company, St Pauls Afrikan Caribbean Carnival, and Carnival Arts and Masquerade Foundation (CAMF) alongside the national body, the UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA), and covers London, the South East, South West and East of England. The consortium was a major recipient of the Arts Council’s Catalyst fund last year and will use the funding to help develop and grow the sector by attracting new sources of funding. The partnership will

also support the development of Carnival Art forms spanning music, movement and costume making (masquerade). Collectively the partners will demonstrate the positive impact Carnival has on neighbourhood regeneration, education, business development, tourism development and community cohesion. Sir Peter Bazelgette, Chair of the Arts Council said “The Arts Council is delighted to support such an inclusive art form. I look forward to seeing the growth of the new Carnival partnership on the Carnival sector and its knock-on effects on the wider arts industry across the UK”. Actor Colin Salmon said “I have witnessed first hand through my involvement with Carnival over many years the unique way that its art forms connect and inspire people from any background and every age group. The new Carnival Arts partnership will enable Carnival and its artists to reach even more people through one of the most exciting and exuberant art forms on the planet. I’m proud to be part of this fantastic moment in UK carnival history.

Businesswoman urges parents to make a Will Free advice on why it is vital to protect your family’s future by writing a Will is being offered by an Isle of Wight businesswoman. Deborah Rooke, of East Cowes, a professional Will Writer and mother of two, is the owner of Wight Wills. She feels a Last Will and Testament is potentially the most important document you will ever write - particularly if you have children. But despite the significance of the legal agreement, Deborah is often left shocked at how many Isle of Wight residents still fail to act. She said: “It is a simple fact; if you have children you really must have a Will. You may assume your parents will have guardianship if both you and your partner die, but that may not be the case. Your child could even end up in the care of Social Services while the courts decide who should look after them. That’s why every parent on the Island should have a Will.” According to professional advice portal unbiased.co.uk, more than 60% of the UK population do not have a will (2011 survey), and the figure is said to be sharply rising. Deborah believes that parents don’t realise how relevant writing a Will can be to every day life: “As a parent, we spend our days ensuring our children are well fed, well dressed and well looked after. Shouldn’t every good parent want their child to be looked after in the best way they know how, even after they are gone?” Deborah is now offering free expertise and advice on her new website, wightwills.co.uk, which includes ten reasons to take action before it’s too late. She concluded: “Don’t put off writing a Will because you think you’re too young or that death won’t touch you. By the time you need it, it could be too late. Look after those you love and write a Will. Write it, and then go live your life!”
