The Island’s MP Andrew Turner has commented on the Same Sex Marriage Vote which was held yesterday evening in the Commons.

The Bill received 400 votes in support and 175 against - a number of

MPs abstained and some registered a ‘positive abstention’ by voting in both the Yes and the No lobbies.

Mr Turner voted against the Bill.

Eight people arrested after house party disorder in Ryde Police are still questioning eight people following a large party in Ryde that caused over £7,000 of damage to the property.

A large amount of police officers were called to an address in Ryde following reports of a party.

Police escorted over 150 people from the address in Ryde and onto local buses.

Further disorder then occurred on the buses .

and more officers were drafted into Newport to resolve the situation. Eight people were arrested, aged between 14 and 24. Three of the eight were arrested for assaulting police officers. The officers were not seriously injured and remained on duty.

Sergeant Michael Hughes from Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This large scale disorder

was the result of a party being advertised on social media. It got out of hand and police had to be called in. “We then had to use significant resources to deal robustly with further issues in Newport.

“I’d like to reassure the public that we will also be deploying extra patrols when needed, we will not tolerate any repeat of this behaviour.”

Trust shows good performance against national indicators Performance information reviewed by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust Board today, Wednesday 26th February, shows that the services provided by the Trust are performing in most areas to a high standard against national performance indicators.

Commenting after the Board meeting Executive Medical Director, Dr Mark Pugh said: “Despite the pressures over the winter period and in recent weeks, our staff have coped incredibly well, through hard work and a real

commitment to our patients. Because of this, across most national performance indicators, we are hitting or exceeding most targets. One area – referrals for suspected breast cancer seen within two weeks, during the period July to September 2012, had a problem. Our latest figures for January 2013 show that we saw 100% of referrals for suspected breast cancer within two weeks and our year to date figure (April 2012 to January 2013) is 93% against the national

indicator of 93%. The improvement was due to improved booking methods and an investment in new imaging equipment, which now ensure patients can be seen quickly.”

The benchmarking update, which forms part of the Trust’s performance report presented to the Board meeting in public, shows that the Trust is in the top quartile for five targets, and achieving better than average results in another 8 areas. MP leads Cross-Party Delegation to see Minister

A cross-party delegation will be travelling to London on Tuesday next week to speak to the Minister who is responsible for maritime affairs, Stephen Hammond MP. The group will be raising the impact of the recent cuts in Wightlink services. They will also be pointing out the extent that the Island relies on the cross-Solent ferry services and the impact that service cuts and fare prices have on Islanders and the Island’s economy as a whole.

The delegation was organised by the Island’s MP Andrew Turner, following a public meeting in January attended by over 100

people.

Those who attended called for all interested groups to work together to bring the Island’s plight to the attention of the Government.

Mr Turner said: “I was pleased to organise this opportunity to lobby the Minister on a cross-party basis. In the past we have had some success with that approach and at least it shows that the Island is speaking as one voice. I am not expecting any quick fixes – the market study by the OFT demonstrated that there are none – however Ministers are in listening mode and we can discuss any ideas that we have to improve things.”

Rob da Bank launches his 2013 Bestival Island Band, DJ, Choir & Spoken-Word Competition Bestival organiser (& BBC Radio One DJ) Rob da Bank’s has announced that his quest to uncover the freshest Isle of Wight talent will include two brand new categories – Best Island Choir & Best Spoken-Word/Beatboxer – for the first time this year.

Rob took a decision to add these two new disciplines for 2013 after being blown-away by the depth of young Island talent on display at his regular Rob da Bank’s Music Club nights (which happen on the last Tuesday of every month at Quay Arts, Newport, Isle of Wight – free entry to all Island teens).

Rob said; “My Music Club has been a real eye opener over the past year, with so much great talent coming through the doors.

Council tax on the Island frozen for the third year running Council tax on the Island will remain frozen for a third successive year.

The freeze was approved on the 27th February at the Full Council alongside a range of steps designed to help local households meet the rising cost of living.

Council leader David Pugh said careful budget management had enabled the council to not only keep council tax at 2011/12 levels but also to continue to introduce initiatives that would benefit residents and the economy.

He told the meeting: “We have the opportunity tonight to freeze council tax for the third year running, and in doing so ensure that we protect Island residents from a further increase in the cost of living. This is the responsible thing to do.

“We have steered the council through the most challenging financial period it has ever faced, and have ensured that we are well prepared for the further decisions of the future.

“The local authority has a clear path for achieving further savings and allowing additional resources to be invested in support of the local economy. At the same time we have set out how we are helping Island households, not least through a third year of a council tax freeze.”

Initiatives agreed at last night’s meeting include: - keeping parking charges at the same level for the fifth year running; - using grant funding of almost £450,000 to address fuel poverty and help householders reduce their

energy bills; - pledging to introduce additional schemes to help Island residents onto the housing ladder; The council is also proposing an additional £60,000 of local funds to support the innovative community bus scheme over the next financial year. The budget also proposes that investment in adult social care is increased by £8.7m over the next three years and an additional £475,000 is made available to help improve child safeguarding and improve services for vulnerable children. This investment is proposed against the backdrop of the council needing to deliver £7 million of savings during the next financial year because all of which will be met from reduced office costs.

Health Commissioners for the Island given green light The Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been given the green light to take control of the local NHS budget as a recognised standalone organisation, following an announcement by the NHS Commissioning Board.

The Isle of Wight CCG is one of only a handful of CCG’s nationally to be authorised without any conditions in the second wave of authorisation decisions.

This means that the CCG has satisfied all 119 authorisation criteria set during the assessment process. The CCG had to demonstrate it was able to commissioning safely, improve quality, reduce inequality and deliver improved health outcomes within resource allocation.

Authorisation is granted after experts have reviewed the CCG’s policies, carried out site visits, interviewed its leaders and assessed its

work with stakeholders and patients.

The CCG will formally take responsibility for commissioning hospital, community and mental health services for the Island from 1st April 2013, overseeing a budget of £193 million. The CCG has since December 2011 been managing the budget under delegated authority for the IOW PCT and has shown a track record of achievement. The Isle of Wight Primary Care Trust will be abolished on the 31st March 2013. Dr John Rivers, Chairman of Isle of Wight CCG, said: “It is a great credit to the enthusiasm and hard work of my colleagues in the CCG that we have been authorised to take on full commissioning responsibilities.

“It is important to recognise that for the CCG to succeed in the huge challenges it now faces it is

a mobilisation plan to enable it to be fully functioning from 1st April 2013. Many staff have already been slotted into posts, and vacancies are currently being advertised “I look forward to working with partner organisations to improve the health of the Isle of Wight residents.”

PAYE is changing soon. Are you ready? biggest overhaul to the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system in almost 70 years it is time for employers in the South to get ready.

HMRC’s Jane Brothwood* explains how Real Time Information (RTI) will revolutionise PAYE. From April, employers will be required to move to a new way of reporting PAYE. For the vast majority of employers, the first ‘real time’ return will be the first employee payday on or after 6 April 2013.

Reporting PAYE in real time will be quicker, easier and more accurate for employers.

Your payroll software will need to calculate your PAYE and send the PAYE information to HMRC as part of a routine payroll

operation. You should also look carefully at your payroll practices as – although the way PAYE is calculated is not changing – some of the practices that you use may not work for real time reporting.

Reporting PAYE does not change how or when people are paid, or when employers pay income tax and national insurance to HMRC. Instead of sending in the P14 and P35 forms at the end of year you (or your agent, bookkeeper or payroll bureau) will: - send a Full Payment Submission (FPS) each time, or before you pay employees - send an Employer Payment Summary each month, which shows any adjustments to the amount

you owe - send an Earlier Year Update to correct errors or make adjustments to earlier years.

It’s also worth noting that the FPS is not available through HMRC Online – you will need to use RTIenabled payroll software to generate your return.

If you haven’t already, you need to start getting ready from today. First, speak to your payroll software provider, if you have one, to make sure your software will allow you to meet your obligations from April 2013.

If you do not use a payroll service provider or have software, there is a wide range of commercial payroll software products available – including some free/low cost products.

Five short films to explain water bills Southern Water has produced a series of five short films to explain terms and figures shown on its household bills.

They have been made using helpful feedback from customers about what may need further explanation.

The films show assessed, unmetered and metered bills, including those relating to Southern Water’s universal metering programme which will see the majority of homes in the South East fitted with water meters before 2015.

Chief Customer Officer Darren Bentham said: “We appreciate

water bills can sometimes cause confusion due to all the information and figures that must be included.

“We’ve produced these short films to explain terms and figures shown on household bills.

“The aim was to provide a clear guide to the bills which we hope will help customers see what’s what, so they understand exactly what they’re paying and why.”

The short films can be seen on Southern Water’s website at www.southernwater.co.uk.

HMRC’s free basic software, Basic PAYE Tools, will also be available for the smallest employers (with nine or fewer employees).

It is also vital that you check the employee information you hold is accurate and up-to-date. It is particularly important that surname, forename, gender, address, date of birth and National Insurance Number are correct and in the right format.

HMRC will not be imposing any penalties for in-year late reporting until 2014. This will be a year of transition and HMRC will be doing all it can to help business make the change.

New measures to improve children’s services A number of steps designed to strengthen child protection and education services on the Isle of Wight have been announced.

The Isle of Wight Council has outlined a series of measures to swiftly address concerns raised by the recent Ofsted inspection that found arrangements for the protection of children to be inadequate.

Plans are currently being developed to enter into a strategic partnership with Hampshire County Council, with proposals for Hampshire’s director of children’s services John Coughlan, to assume the statutory role of director of children’s services for both councils.

This arrangement, which requires endorsement by the Isle of Wight Council’s Employment Committee on 11 March and Full Council approval on 20 March, proposes that both local authorities share the statutory senior leadership and management of Isle of Wight’s Children’s Services over the next three to five years. This will be also be subject to Hampshire County Council’s decision-making processes and approval by the Department for Education (DfE).A number of steps designed to strengthen child protection and education services on the Isle of Wight have been announced.

By sharing a director of children’s services with a neighbouring local authority, which has considerable expertise in this area, we would have the opportunity to achieve the step-change in performance which the Isle of Wight Council urgently needs.

“Under the proposal, if agreed, John Coughlan and his team will provide strong senior management to both children’s social care and education. This support to our frontline staff would ensure sound decisions are made for rapid service improvement.

“This represents a model of joint working in children’s services which

is already operating to good effect in other parts of the country.

“As a small local authority we continue to have difficulties in attracting a sufficient calibre of senior management to oversee complex service areas such as these. Many councils of our size have also acknowledged this, and are moving to similar shared management arrangements.

“I would stress this proposed partnership with Hampshire is not part of a budget savings strategy, on the contrary, significant additional resources are being invested in support of strengthening our child protection arrangements.

This partnership is entirely focused on sharing and strengthening the leadership of children’s services on the Isle of Wight and drawing on Hampshire’s experience in this field.

“Both authorities would remain responsible for their own political leadership, policy decisions and accountability for their respective services, but by working together we can

ensure that our priority to safeguard and improve the education of children and young people on the Island is driven forward.

“We have also separately agreed with the DfE, as part of our response to the inspection, to the establishment of an improvement board. The board will be independently chaired by Professor Ray Jones, who has significant experience in leading both improvement boards and a local safeguarding children’s board in other parts of the country, and will hold all agencies to account in matters relating to the safeguarding of children.”

Councillor Ken Thornber, leader of Hampshire County Council said: “While the Isle of Wight Council will clearly remain accountable for its children’s services, we hope that our expertise in this field can help them improve the quality of their services and in doing so, help safeguard children on the Island by developing and maintaining high quality safe and effective services.

“Hampshire County

Council has a proven track record in providing high quality safeguarding services and support for looked after children, having obtained excellent outcomes in its last inspection.

“Shared management between nearby councils is a growing trend in local government and is a sensible way forward. This arrangement will make best use of existing strengths of Hampshire’s children’s services’ senior management to support the Isle of Wight’s children’s services department to strengthen its practices, while maintaining the individual responsibility in each respective local authority.

“I am sure our senior management staff will be able to offer strong and meaningful support to the Isle of Wight, but this will also provide mutual learning opportunities for both councils. The two authorities share the same aim of improving outcomes for vulnerable children and their families which will form the binding principle of this partnership.”

Portsmouth and Bembridge crews welcome Vendée sailor Alex Thomson Round-the-world sailor Alex Thomson was given a warm welcome back to his home town of Gosport following his success in finishing third in the gruelling Vendée Globe race.

Volunteer lifeboat crewmembers from Portsmouth and Bembridge lifeboat stations today joined a 'Parade of Sail' to congratulate Alex who took 80 days to complete the 24,000 mile solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe. Alex arrived in Les Sables d’Olonne on

January 30th after 80days 19hours 23minutes and 43seconds at sea.

Despite being a race, Alex diverted his boat HUGO BOSS to ensure the safety of another competitor who had lost his keel.

This is the first Vendée Globe that Alex has completed, having had to retire from previous attempts, and he becomes one of only three British skippers to secure a Vendée podium place.

Island residents at heart of new housing plans A major new housing policy that could end the lifetime entitlement to social housing is being proposed, alongside a plan to give extra priority to residents who make a contribution to society.

In an approach which seeks to make best use of the limited public resources available to support those in greatest need, the Isle of Wight Council will seek to introduce a more flexible approach to housing that would link it to employment for the first time.

The overhaul follows the introduction of the Localism Bill that given councils new freedoms and flexibilities in setting allocations policies that reflect local needs.

The new tenancy strategy proposes that social housing can, in future, be made available for fixedterm periods of between two and five years. This change means residents would not automatically be able to remain in social housing property that had become unsuitable for their needs, irrespective of a change of their financial or personal circumstances.

For example, a large family whose children had left home would have their tenancy of their property reviewed if it was now considered to have surplus bedrooms.

To complement this, the council is planning to work with the housing associations

to develop a relocation incentivisation scheme, to encourage and assist existing tenants in downsizing where appropriate – thereby freeing up larger housing for those Island families in greatest need.

At the same time, the new strategy would also maintain the preference given to needy residents such as those who are made homeless, living in unsanitary or unsafe properties, those who require a move on medical or welfare grounds including disability and those who need to move to a particular locality to avoid hardship to themselves or family members.

In a further initiative to be developed with partners, it is proposed that residents will earn increased priority for social housing if they are in employment or taking steps towards securing employment. The prioritisation of such housing for residents with strong and long-standing connections to the Island would also be strengthened.

Councillor Stuart Hutchinson, cabinet member for adult social care and housing, said: “We now have the opportunity to ensure that social housing stock is used much more effectively to support those in greatest need. The Localism Act allows us to introduce a series of measures to help Island

families into housing that is matched to their needs, with the opportunity to review this at timely intervals.

“It is also right that we help those people who – by being in work or taking firm steps in this direction – make an active contribution to Island life, where they are able to.

This is not about penalising people who cannot work; it is about rewarding those who are seeking to do so.

“We are confident that this more flexible approach will make a positive difference to the lives of many Island families and help them on the right track towards employment and future home ownership, wherever possible. Our recently announced First Time Buyer Fund complements this approach by giving more Islanders the opportunity to get onto the property ladder.

“This is the first step in our plans to introduce a comprehensive new housing strategy which will meet the changing needs of our residents over the coming years – and ensure we help provide for the next generation of Islanders.”

Councillor Hutchinson said the plans were very much in line with two key themes of the draft Isle of Wight Council budget – Helping Island Households and Supporting the Local Economy.

Don’t get caught out by tax rebate phishing scam Taxpayers reported almost 80,000 tax rebate phishing emails last year, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have revealed today, as they warn people not to fall victim to the email scams sent by fraudsters.

The emails promise a tax refund in exchange for personal, credit card or banking details. However, people who respond risk opening their account to fraud and having details sold on to organised

criminal gangs.

Emails often link to a clone of HMRC’s genuine website to trick unsuspecting taxpayers into handing over their details, but HMRC never sends emails about a genuine tax rebate.

HMRC took action to close down 522 illegal sites in 2012, which showed these emails originated from a number of countries including the United States of America, Russia and Japan, as well

as central and Eastern Europe.

Gareth Lloyd, Head of Digital Security for HMRC said: “HMRC does not email customers about tax refunds – we only ever contact customers who are genuinely due tax back in writing, by post.

“If anyone receives an email offering a tax rebate and claiming to be from HMRC, please send it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk before deleting it permanently.”

Major cycleway improvement underway The first phase of a major £250,000 scheme to upgrade one of the Island’s busiest cycleways is progressing well.

Work to the 3.75km route between Shanklin and Wroxall has included the clearance of vegetation, new drainage work, resurfacing and widening of the shared path between Yarborough Road, Wroxall and Lower Hyde at Shankln.

The scheme is one of the first major projects to be undertaken by the Isle of Wight Council using some of the £4 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund grant secured by the authority to support green transport and tourism schemes and follows on from the major improvement of the Alverstone to Golf Links Road shared surface The current round of works on the Wroxall to Shanklin cycleway will last until the end of March when they will be suspended – with a temporary but useable surface in place for the summer. Both the interim and final road surfaces, which will have anti-skid properties, are suitable for all legitimate users.

Councillor Edward Giles, cabinet member responsible for transport issues said: “The money the council secured under the LSTF will enable us to make significant improvements to our sustainable transport network which in turn will make us an even more

attractive ‘green’ tourism destination.

“The work at Shanklin to Wroxall will significantly upgrade what is already a busy cyclepath. The project will not only improve accessibility and highway safety, but also promote sustainable travel for commuters, school pupils and visitors to the Island.”

The plan has been devised following consultation with local Isle of Wight Council members as well as the relevant town and parish councils The track will remain closed until the end of March to allow the first phase of works to be completed.

The final surface is primarily designed for cyclists and pedestrians with the route forming part of the Island’s cycle route network and is not – nor has ever been – a designated bridleway.

Technically, the route is not available for equestrians.

Isle of Wight Council head of Highways Peter Hayward said: “Because of the scale of the improvements we are undertaking, there has been some disruption to users as we have had to restrict access as the improvement work could prove hazardous to users.

“We apologise for any inconvenience but hope most people would appreciate the reasons for the restrictions and think a little inconvenience now is worth it given the very high quality multi-use transport link that will shortly be available.”

Why do I feel this way?

Caroline: My dad was abusive to my mum as we were growing up and I’ve never forgiven him for that. I rarely see him and my children hardly know him, but they ask questions about him. I sometimes find myself thinking he was dead and it brings a sigh of relief. Is there something wrong with me?

Calder: You cant help but be affected by your experiences as a child can you? Watching your father bully your mum for years on end would obviously have a bearing on how you feel about him. Its a

difficult one really as its only natural for you to love your dad and want him to be a part of your life. I've spoken to people in similar situations before and I know the mixed emotions can be hard to cope with. You feel how you feel Caroline and I don't think you should make a conscious effort to change that. One thing you might want to consider is writing to your dad and just telling him how you feel. He may or may not reply but the point is, you'll have had your say.

Desperate to get my friend to talk to me Wendy: I have tried so desperately to get my friend to talk to me. We had a huge falling out a few years ago and we haven’t talked since, but we had been friends since we were kids. She ignores my texts, email and letters.

I have even been to her house, but her husband wouldn’t let me see her.

Do I move on? I really do miss her terribly.

Calder: Perhaps one of the hardest things in life is knowing when to quit Wendy. Right now anything and everything you do seems to push your friend yet further away so

maybe its time to give up and see if she comes to you? There's no way on earth you will ever be able to change the way she feels, only she can do that.

I know its hard and its obvious that you miss her but the more you pester her, the more you'll alienate her. If you stop all contact and she doesn't come back to you, at least you'll be able to draw a curtain over that part of your own life and move on.

You've spent two years worrying about this so whatever happens, you know yourself its time to put an end to it.

Openly Gay but I fancy a man Sherrie: I have been openly gay for quite a few years now and have had relationships with girls, and have been very happy.

But recently I've started having sexual feelings towards a man, who is also my cousin. I don’t want to upset anyone and I’m not sure what this all means?

Calder: Were so obsessed with labels these days, why cant you just accept that you are who and what you are Sherrie? Maybe you do like both sexes but so what? So long as you're not hurting anybody I just

don't see the harm. One of the worst things we can do to ourselves as human beings is to deny our feelings & lock them away.

It gives rise to all sorts of problems, not least regret which in itself can destroy you. Stop thinking in terms of gay and straight and just get out there and go for what you want. Nobody is going to judge you are they? In fact, the only critic you need to worry about is yourself! Stop holding back & just live your life, that's the only way to be happy.

found out my mother has cancer Rhian: I recently found out my mother has cancer.

I love her and I hate to see her in pain, but I just can’t stop myself getting angry with her. We shout at each other all the time, I know it’s not doing her any good but I can’t stop myself.

What should I do?

Calder: Emotions are running high that's all Rhian and its perfectly

understandable. You and your mum need to take a step back and give yourselves time to digest the news and then adapt to it. Nobody wants to hear that a close relative is ill, let alone with cancer! The arguments aren't helping either of you so its essential that you both learn to channel your emotions and avoid

confrontation. Even if this means spending some time apart to compose yourselves! The positive in your story is that you can identify this as a problem and that can only help cant it? Plan some outings with your mum and try to engineer things so no matter where you are, you'll both be able to relax.

I had an affair around the time I got pregnant Jayne: I had an affair around the time I got pregnant, but I never thought it could have been the other guy’s baby as we always used contraception.

My daughter is now 2 years old and is starting look like the other man.

I’m worried that my boyfriend isn’t her dad, but I don’t want to hurt him.

Should I come clean?

Calder: Shouldn't you have thought about your boyfriends feelings a few years ago or am I missing

the point here? To be perfectly honest, I would be more concerned about your daughter. Isn't it only right and proper for her to know who here real father is? You should speak to your GP and see what the options are in terms of having a DNA test carried out. Of course that means you're going to have to face the music somewhere along the line but what other choice do you have?

Think about it, if these nagging doubts are

bothering you now, ten years into the future they'll be a hundred times worse.

You made a mistake and you're just going to have face that Jayne. Ultimately, there are three people this affects, your daughter, your boyfriend and the guy you jumped into bed with.

They all deserve to know the truth don't they? If I were you, I'd sort this out sooner rather than later because until you do, its just going to eat away at you.

Abandoned for a computer game Charlotte: My boyfriend is great; he’s kind and thoughtful, sometimes! He rarely shows this side of himself and he is obsessed with computer games and I mean he plays morning to night. I try and talk to him and he just tells me I’m nagging. I don’t want to pester him but I need his attention too. Please help.

Calder: games have got a lot to answer for haven't they? I've never got into

them myself but I have spoken to plenty of people who've become addicted.

What you describe is more common than you think Charlotte. Ultimately, this is about you and what kind of life you want for yourself. Your boyfriend needs to sit up and listen to your concerns rather than wearing his thumbs out on a plastic controller!

Tell him that unless things change and he devotes a

little more of his time to you that you're going to walk away. Hopefully that will be the jolt he needs to start taking you and your needs a little more seriously. Ultimately of course, if he simply cant or wont change, you will need to think about where you go from here. You are the one in control Charlotte, your life can be as good or as bad as you want it to be.

His ex won’t leave me alone Clare: I have been with my partner for four years and his ex wife keeps telling his kids that I’m a witch and spreading rumours about me across town. I’m not sure why she hates me so much because they had been broken up for nearly two years before we got together. It’s really getting me down but she just won’t stop!

Calder: Some people are

able to end a relationship without bitterness whereas others aren't, its as simple as that Clare. This woman is obviously so bitter and twisted that she thinks nothing of poisoning her own children's minds.

Unless she actually does some physical harm or damage to you, there's very little that can be done.

People like this tend to show themselves up and in

the end, the vicious rumours and gossip do die down. The best thing you can do is just carry on ignoring her and reassure yourself that you're none of the things she says you are. As for your partners children, they can probably see beyond the lies they are being fed right now. Keep your chin up and ignore this as much as you can sweetheart.

Honeymoon period has begun to fade Lisa: I got married four years ago and the honeymoon period has really begun to fade. I knew we’d settle down into normal life after marriage but I can’t help feeling I need more excitement, and passion, and my husband doesn’t give me that. I’m attracted to nearly every man I see, just like when I was single.

I know I can’t act on any of these urges and it’s driving me crazy. Do you think my marriage is over already?

Calder: Your husband doesn’t give you the excitement and passion you crave eh? I wonder if he could say the same about you? For whatever reason, we can all be guilty of taking our eye off the ball in our relationships.

The point is though, it’s a two way street! Too many people do exactly what you’re doing now Lisa, they look at their partners and blame them! Why not try to re-inject the excitement yourself rather than sitting and waiting for

the old man to do it for you?

Do something different for a change, maybe cook a romantic dinner and seduce the man you love? There are a million and one things you could do but unless you accept that you are just as responsible for this whole thing as your husband, I’m afraid you have next to no hope at all of changing things. Give my suggestion a try you’ll be pleasantly surprised, trust me.

My 18-year-old brother is often physically abusive Kirsty: I’m not sure where to turn as I’m not sure if my problem is really a problem at all. My 18year-old brother is often physically abusive towards me and will hit or push me so hard that it’s really painful and I bruise. I know brothers and sisters are supposed to fight, especially teenagers but he always takes it too far. I’ve asked him to stop and he just teased me. Am I just

being stupid or should I tell someone, and who?

Calder: I can categorically tell you that this is a problem. No human being should have to suffer physical violence and to be honest, the fact your brother is the perpetrator here is an absolute disgrace. Tell this little thug that the next time he so much as waves his hand at you you’ll call the police. Let me tell you, the

police will take a very dim view of his behaviour. In the meantime, perhaps explaining things to your parents and asking them to have a word with him would be a good idea.

Whatever the reasons for your brothers behaviour, you have every right be safe in your own home haven’t you? Have a chat with him and explain in no uncertain terms that this needs to stop right away.

Only 15 and she’s pregnant Clare: My daughter is only 15 and has just told me that she’s pregnant. I’m really upset but she tells me I can’t be as I had her at only 16. The truth is though I regretted having a child so young all my life.

I love my daughter but missed out on so much and I know the same is going to happen to her. How do I explain this without breaking her heart?

Calder: Clare, I think you’re missing the point here. You don’t have to justify your life to your daughter at all but what you do have to do is love and support her when she

needs you most. Of course its not an ideal situation to be in and you haven’t mentioned the issue of whether your daughter wants to keep the baby or not. My feeling though is that you should do all you can to help her make her own mind up and make sure that she knows you’re behind her all the way.

You’re past has absolutely nothing to do with your daughters future does it?

Sure, your experience and wisdom are invaluable to her but you have to realise that this is her life, not yours. Good luck to you both.

They want to meet my Internet Love Nadia: I met my boyfriend on an internet dating site and have since met up and become a proper item.

When I first told people about the relationship I was too embarrassed to tell them how we’d met and told everyone we’d met in a pub. Now my friends want to meet him but if they do they’ll find out the truth, and that I was lying for so long. What can I do?

My lie is going to ruin my friendships or my relationship, or both.

Calder: How about you just try being honest?

People can be very forgiving once you explain your reasons you know! At the end of the day, the

important thing here is your happiness Nadia and your true friends know that. Hold your hands up to this now, before you have to lie on top of the lies & I think you’ll be ok.

Telling the truth really isn’t that difficult and its not as if your lies were told to hurt anyone is it? Speak to your boyfriend first, tell him everything and then approach your mates.

There may be a few raised eyebrows at first but its hardly the lie of the century. Think about the reasons behind the lies & try to be as open & honest as you can with people. If you do that, I don’t think you’ll go far wrong!

Should I dabble in the drugs?

Maddie: I went away for two weeks on holiday and when I came back I found out that all my friends had tried drugs at a party. Now they do them every weekend and are always telling me to try it because I’d love it. I’m really scared though, as they all went through their first time together and I’ll be on my own. Should I give in or try to be strong and risk being an outcast?

Calder: Would you jump off a cliff if they told you it was a “great thing” ? Of course you wouldn’t! I have to be honest and tell you that these friends are letting you down badly if

they’re trying to coax you into doing anything you don’t want to do – especially drug taking! It’s a slippery slope Maddie, I’ve met so many people who thought they could cope with recreational drug taking, only to realise a few years down the line that they’ve pretty much destroyed their lives. Tell your “friends” you’re perfectly happy as you are and that you`d rather leave the drugs alone thank you very much. Ultimately, if the pressure to have a dabble get too much, perhaps you should consider finding some new friends?

An important opportunity has arisen to help shape the future of Cowes Harbour due to a vacancy becoming available within Cowes Harbour’s Board of Commissioners. The Board of Commissioners are at the forefront of bold plans to turn Cowes into a true, sheltered harbour with the construction of a proposed new Cowes breakwater.

Commissioners also play a vital role in the ongoing modernisation of the harbour through such initiatives as the

introduction of new powers of General Directions. In addition, Commissioners are focussed on encouraging investment into Cowes and are closely involved with new initiatives designed to attract more events into both Cowes and East Cowes.

Chairman of Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC), Roger Mathias, said: “We are prioritising applications from those with commercial legal, grant funding expertise, or

marine civil engineering backgrounds. But these requirements are not prescriptive and we’d like to encourage anyone who believes they have something to offer the Commission to apply. “We have introduced a much more open process for the appointment of new Commissioners so that there is now a majority of non-CHC representatives on the selection panel. The panel will now consist of a Commissioner, one stakeholder representative

CCTV images released by police after assault in Newport Wine Bar Isle of Wight Police have released CCTV images of two people they would like to speak to after two 18year-old women were assaulted in Newport The incident occurred between 12.30am and 1.30am on Thursday February 21st at Yates Bar. Both teenagers were approached by an older woman who accused them of pushing into her.

After an exchange of words they left the bar area and went to the ladies toilet. Shortly after this the same older woman accompanied by a friend came into the toilets and proceeded to assault both victims; who had their hair pulled, faces slapped and were left with visible scratches to their necks.

The suspects were ejected from Yates shortly after this incident and flagged down a taxi near to the area.

The first suspect is described as a white woman with short dark hair, aged late 20s to early 30s, wearing a long sleeved white blouse with possibly a logo on the front. 5ft 6ins to 5ft 8ins

tall. Skinny build with bad skin and wearing a lot of make up, in particulary bright pink lipstick The second suspect is a white woman with log dark hair, aged late 20s to early 30s, skinny build, wearing a black long sleeved top.

Investigating officer, PC Kirsty Dunn said: “This is a violent unprovoked assault on two young women which left them both shaken and scared.

“I would be interested to hear from any person who may have witnessed the assault at Yates. In particular a woman who was present in the toilets at the time of the attack. I would urge this person to come forward.

"It has been suggested that the suspects took a taxi after the assault. It is imperative that if this is the case, that I hear from this taxi driver."

Roadworks delayed due to engineering difficulties Temporary one way restrictions will now be in operation from 7pm on Thursday 28 February until approx 8pm on Wednesday 27 March 2013 for major gas main and service replacement works in the lower section of Staplers Road and A3054 Fairlee Road (from Staplers Road to Fairlee Link Road) by Southern Gas Networks.

Police appeal for witnesses after man assaulted in Cowes Police are appealing for witnesses after a man ended up with an ankle injury after he was involved in an altercation with a group of people.

At about 1.00am on Saturday, February 23, 2013, a 22-year-old man was walking home through Cowes when he appears to have been drawn into an exchange of words with two men and two women who were sat on a bench by the corner of Birmingham Road and Shooters Hill.

Suffered cracked fibula A fight has broken out, during which the man

sustained an injury to his left ankle. He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance for treatment to a cracked fibula.

Police are seeking to identify two men and two women in relation with the incident: The first man is described as a white man, with short dark hair, wearing a dark hooded jacket, jeans and trainers. The second man is described as a white man, with short dark hair wearing a hoody with white ties and a Nike rucksack.

The third person is a white female with long blonde

hair and the forth suspect is a white female with long brown hair, wearing a dark jacket and dark coloured leggings.

Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area at around the time to get in contact with them if they think they may have seen the incident involving the group.

Food Standards Agency meat testing survey expanded The Food Standards Agency has expanded its UK-wide survey of food authenticity in processed meat products being carried out through local authorities.

The survey, expanded to ensure that a wider range of products are sampled, will include a total of 514 products.

The sampling for the first two phases will be carried out by 28 local authorities and will include beefbased foods that are sold pre-packed, or ‘loose’ (for example, cafe sandwiches).

Sampling for the third

phase will be allocated to other local authorities across the UK. Details of the survey Phase 1: 224 samples of raw comminuted (minced) beef products including burgers, minced beef, beef sausage or meat balls checked for horse and pork DNA. Phase 2: 140 samples of beef-based ready meals including frozen, chilled or canned lasagne, chilli con carne, cottage pie, ravioli, cannelloni and spaghetti bolognese checked for horse and pork DNA. Phase 3: 150 samples will

be taken as part of a European Commission survey (official control programme) and checked for horse DNA. These include products marketed or labelled as containing beef as a major ingredient such as minced meat, meat products and meat preparations (such as kebabs with seasoning).

Products such as gelatine, beef dripping, stock cubes, steak, stewing steak and ready meals which contain beef that is not minced, are included.

Police appeal for information following road rage incident Police are appealing for information following a road rage incident near Whitwell. The incident took place at around 5.00pm on Tuesday, February 12, when the driver of a yellow Honda Civic attempted to overtake the driver of a white Peugeot van after it had turned out of Beacon Alley onto Niton Road, heading towards Niton.

The driver of the Honda then pursued the Peugeot, beeping his horn continually whilst tailgating the rear of the van. As the driver of the van turned right into Sibbecks Farm at Whitwell, the Honda driver collided with the rear offside of the van.

Both vehicles then entered the farm’s driveway where a further collision is alleged to have occurred. This resulted in the driver of the Honda getting out of his vehicle and opening the passenger door of the van,

however the passenger of the Peugeot van was able to pull it shut and they drove up the farm track in an effort to get away.

As the van drove back out of the farm, the driver of the Honda smashed the driver’s side window, which resulted in cuts to the van driver’s face, hands and legs.

The driver of the Peugeot van then drove back along Niton Road into Beacon Ally heading home when the Honda driver starts to pursue the van again in an aggressive manner.

At the junction of Beacon Alley and Whitwell Road the van driver turned right but was immediately overtaken by the driver of the Honda Civic who slamed on his brakes causing the Peugeot driver to collide with the rear of his car.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of

dangerous driving and criminal damage and has been released on police bail until Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

PC Keith Haywood said: “This was a frightening example of unacceptable driving and behaviour that left both the driver and the passenger of the Peugeot van in shock.

“I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the manner of driving of th= ese vehicles leading up to or during this incident and in particular anyone who witnessed the collisions.”

RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers get creative to carry out unusual rescue The volunteer lifeboat crew at Bembridge had their ingenuity and rescue skills tested to the limit last week, when they assisted a man who had suffered a stroke – leaving him stranded on an old military fort.

Crew members from the station were tasked by Solent Coastguard in the early hours of Tuesday (19 th Feb) to launch to the aid of a man who had been taken ill on No Man’s Land fort, situated in the Solent off the coast of the Isle of Wight. With no obvious method to transfer the casualty down onto the lifeboat, the coxswain had to apply creative thinking and resorted to some rather unorthodox method using ropes, a hook and a plastic stretcher.

The 60-year-old man was among several construction workers refurbishing the fort in preparation for its new life as a luxury hotel. He had suffered a stroke and was in need of medical attention, prompting coastguards to request the launch of Bembridge RNLI lifeboat. The crew were summoned from their beds by pagers at 12.52am; just 20 minutes later they were on scene and preparing to evacuate the man. Coxswain Steve

Simmonds took up the story: ‘We assumed it would just be a straightforward evacuation and had no idea how complicated it would be. The only access to the fort is up a vertical 15ft ladder, onto a gantry, up a ramp onto a boarding platform, which is traditionally used to hoist RIBs from the water.

The obvious solution was to use the hoist to lower the man onto the lifeboat – but that had broken just the day before.’ In addition, Steve said that the Solent Coastguard rescue helicopter, which under normal circumstances could have airlifted the casualty, was otherwise engaged at Heathrow Airport.

‘There was no way he could have climbed down the ladder in his state – the only way he was coming off the fort was in a stretcher. We found ourselves with the challenge of coming up with a plan to get him safely from the fort onto the lifeboat. My crew are a pretty resourceful bunch though and we came up with the idea of improvising a ‘block and tackle’style setup, using ropes we had on board the lifeboat. Even then, the strops on the stretcher were a foot too long – if we slid him off the

No Man’s Land Fort gantry he would have experienced a 1ft drop before they pulled taught, giving him a pretty sharp Jolt.’

In the end, the crew attached further ropes to hold the stretcher taught as they moved it off the boarding platform, then gradually released the ropes to gently bring him to a rest. The man was then lowered onto the deck of the lifeboat and taken to shore at Portsmouth into the waiting arms of an ambulance crew.

RNLI Lifeboat Station, said: ‘Lifeboat crews are trained to adapt to various situations, but this has to rank as one of the most challenging for Bembridge in recent times.

Fortunately, with a bit of creative thinking and dash of scientific knowledge, our crew came up with a way to safely and securely get the chap off the fort.

Considering our volunteers had jumped out of bed and did this in the dark, at 1am in the morning, it’s fair to say I am hugely proud of them for this rescue.’

Isle of Wight Walking Festival programme out now A programme containing details of hundreds of walks and events taking place at this year’s Isle of Wight Walking Festival is now available to pick up from libraries, council help centres, travel hubs and various businesses across the Island.

This year, the festival features more than 300 walks of all types and for all ages, ranging from simple strolls to 72-mile endurance walks.

Among walks at this year’s event, which takes place between 4 and 19 May, is the popular speed dating walk (which has resulted in four weddings and a baby so far),

ghoulish ghosts walks and new for this year, a challenging ‘Seven Hills’ walk.

Many of the walks take in the spectacular views of the Isle of Wight, with guided walks passing through the Island’s pretty towns and villages such as Ventnor, Bembridge, Newport, Ryde and Sandown. There are educational walks, including events where participants can learn how to read a map and other’s based on historical stories and myths.

This year Brian Blessed returns to the Island to give a fascinating talk about his mountaineering adventures. Brian entertained

walkers at the 2010 walking festival and is back by popular demand. Tickets for the show at Medina Theatre on Sunday 5 May are selling fast, for bookings call Medina Theatre box office on (01983) 527020.

The famous Walk the Wight, which raises money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, takes place on Sunday 12 May. Thousands of walkers are expected to walk from Bembridge to the Needles, a total of 26.5 miles. Those looking for the more quirky walks may like to be part of a ‘sing along’ walk, where anyone can take along musical instruments and sing all

the way along the three mile amble. Full details of all the walks, including distance, difficulty and any cost, can be found on the Walking Festival’s official website at isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk.

Emma Paints Her Way to Cowes Lifeboat Station Nine year old Emma Wyeth had a special reason for visiting the new lifeboat station at Cowes today.

Her painting won a competition open to all schools in the Cowes and East Cowes area, run by the station as part of the RNLI’s recent nation-wide SOS Day, organised by Steve Price.

Emma’s work, now hanging over

the station stairs, was one of 30 or so paintings submitted by Gurnard Primary School,.

The judging was done by Frank Jacobs who as well as becoming a much-respected local watercolour artist in his retirement was also, coincidentally, once headmaster of the school when it was Solent Middle..

St Mary’s Hospital Friends Benefit from Generous Bequests The ability of the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital to purchase future much-appreciated additional facilities for the NHS on the Island has been significantly boosted through the charity receiving legacies totalling £103,500 over recent months.

“It is very heartening that people should recognise the good work we do when drawing up their wills,” said the Friends’ chairman, Geoff Banks. “They probably see it as a tangible way of showing their gratitude for the care they have received during what could have been quite traumatic personal experiences.

“Although we derive income from our hospital shop and cafeterias, together with donations and money-raising events, it is bequests that make

the biggest difference to our balance sheet. As a result we have been able to meet all approved bids made to us by various sectors of the local NHS, both in the hospital and elsewhere on the Island.”

Over the past three years the Friends have paid out over £250,000 for equipment and services that are beyond the limitations of the NHS budget.

Among the many items were a blood analyser, an intensive care monitor, an emergency care vehicle, and seats in the hospital grounds.

The £103,500 was made up of three separate bequests, of £70,000, £21,000 and £12,500.

To underline the value of such generosity the Friends have produced a special legacy leaflet, available in the hospital foyer.

Police release CCTV images after garage theft Officers investigating the theft of a cash register and laptop from a servicing and repair garage on the on the Island have released CCTV images of persons they would like to trace.

Helping Island residents into home ownership The Isle of Wight Council is set to establish a £1 million first time buyer fund to help Island residents take their first step onto the property ladder and provide a much-needed boost to the local housing economy.

Through a Local Authority Mortgage Scheme – already successfully underway elsewhere in the country – the Isle of Wight Council would help would-be home owners bridge the gap between the mortgage deposit they are able to raise and that required to secure an agreed mortgage.

It is proposed that a £1 million returnable surety would be lodged with a major high street bank or building society, which would then administer the scheme on the council’s behalf.

The initiative is aimed at those households who are able to afford monthly mortgage payments on a property to meet their needs, but are currently unable to raise the level of deposit required to secure a mortgage in the first place. It would also help them secure lower interest rates.

It is hoped that as well as offering vital help to potential homeowners, the scheme would also send positive ripples throughout the wider economy and in the housing market – releasing rented stock for those families in need of somewhere to live.

The initiative is part of a proposed £2.23 million capital investment in housing which will be considered by council on 27 March.

It will also be complemented later this month by a cabinet member paper setting

out additional measures to be included in a new housing strategy, such as how social housing stock can be used more effectively to support those in greatest need.

Councillor Stuart Hutchinson, cabinet member for adult social care and housing, said: “A major obstacle preventing Island people buying their first home is that they can often struggle to raise the size of deposit required by lenders before they will agree a mortgage.

“This new scheme will help firsttime buyers overcome the hurdle of needing to save a very large deposit to put down on a property.

With support from the First Time Buyer Fund, the deposit they will need to raise could be as low as five per cent – rather than a prohibitively higher figure which might otherwise be required.

“A further advantage with this initiative is that it will be easier for them to afford the mortgage payments. This is because they will benefit from a lower interest rate than would normally be available to customers with a small deposit.”

It is estimated that the scheme will initially help around 40 firsttime buyers onto the housing ladder, although if successful the returned surety could be subsequently reinvested in support of additional home purchasers on the Island.

Councillor Hutchinson added: “This fund will not only help potential homeowners – and consequently those seeking freed up private rented accommodation – but also the local economy. A stimulated housing market is good news for those looking to

buy and sell, those involved in on 12 March to formally agree a the home -buying and home- way forward selling businesses and also those suppliers, trades and stores connected with home improvement. It is estimated that introducing one additional firsttime buyer to the market typically frees up to five house sales in a chain.” Work to finalise details of the scheme is continuing and a report will be brought to Cabinet

Can you be a retained firefighter The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is holding information sessions for anyone interested in becoming a retained firefighter.

There are vacancies at Cowes, East Cowes, Bembridge, Freshwater and Yarmouth Fire Stations.

Information sessions are being held on Tuesday 26 February 2013 at Yarmouth Fire Station from 6.30pm and Saturday 2 March 2013 from 10.30am at East Cowes. Potential applicants are advised to attend one of the sessions where they will gain a valuable insight into the role of a retained firefighter.

Information and guidance will also be available on the recruitment process and selection tests. The service is looking for committed individuals who want to work as part of a dedicated

and friendly team providing an important service to the local community. You must be over 18 years of age, be physically fit and possess good communication skills.

Although no formal qualifications are required, a good standard of literacy and numeracy will need to be demonstrated. It is also a requirement to live and work close to your local fire station and obtain your employer’s consent to be released to attend operational incidents.
