Reward won’t be extended Police investigating the disappearance of Damien Nettles on the Isle of Wight are starting a fresh review of all information available in the case to date. The decision comes at the end of a six-month period during which a £20,000 police reward was on offer for facts leading to the location of the teenager, who was last seen in Cowes on November 2, 1996. Following the announcement of the reward on October 4, 2012, police received 30 reports of information up until this Thursday (April 4, 2013). Hampshire Constabulary would like to thank everyone who responded to the reward in good faith with genuine attempts to assist our investigation. Each of the 30 reports of information has been analysed and assessed in line with police procedures. None of the information led to new lines of enquiry. However, the case will not be closed. Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Ridgewood Senior Investigating Officer Superintendent David Powell said: “I am disappointed that the offer of a £20,000 reward over six months has not led to any new facts or credible leads on the location of

Damien Nettles. “The reward has been publicised extensively since last October, and the police remain grateful to all the people and organisations that have given time and support in encouraging information from the public. “Regrettably and reluctantly, we’ve had to face the conclusion that the offer of a reward has not taken us any closer to finding out what happened to Damien.” Superintendent Powell said: “Therefore, Hampshire Constabulary has taken the difficult decision not to extend the reward. “Although we always appreciate every single sincere thought and effort to help the police – the information we have received since October has repeated previous unfounded speculation, contained factually inaccurate details – or fallen short of police standards for a reliable source. “I understand and respect the Nettles family’s views on why the reward should be extended, but after much deliberation and careful consideration, I am not convinced at this time that the extension of a police reward can bring us closer to finding Damien. “I have contacted Damien’s mother Valerie

to inform her of this decision, and explain the reasons. “I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the courage and tenacity of the Nettles family. We are acutely aware that this difficult decision is a disappointment, but our choice not to extend the reward does not mean the case is being closed. Operation Ridgewood case files to be reviewed to assess what action the police can take next Superintendent David Powell said: “Hampshire Constabulary has already dedicated significant time and effort into finding out what happened to Damien Nettles. Superintendent Powell added: “I will now be dedicating further time to review all the files and information we have gathered in this case so far. “It’s important in any case of this size to pause for reflection, take stock, assess whether any other potential leads exist, and consider what other reasonable actions the police could take. “I will be keeping the Nettles family informed about my latest review of the case over the next few weeks before reaching a decision on what will happen next. “In the meantime, the case files remain open for any new facts that members of the public may have.”

Curtains Close at the Newport Loft It’s been a fairly epic winter at The Loft. Eggs Aplenty at Cowes RNLI

Children and parents flocked to Cowes RNLI lifeboat station on Good Friday to take up an invitation to tour the station and take part in a egg-scavenger hunt. Station members were on hand during the two-hour event to ensure the visitors felt welcome and learned more about the RNLI, the station, and the Atlantic 85 lifeboat ‘Sheena Louise’.

In the boathouse members of the crew helped some of the more venturesome children up on to the lifeboat. The egg hunt, organised by shore crew member Penny Maclean, involved youngsters finding the answers to clues scattered about the station, and then receiving several tiny chocolate Easter eggs as a prize.

Important election deadlines The Isle of Wight Council would like to remind you of important deadlines ahead of the local elections on Thursday 2 May 2013. In order to vote at both the Isle of Wight Council and town and parish council elections, you must be on the list of registered electors by

Police appeal after disturbance at kebab shop

Police are releasing a CCTV image that has now become available to officers investigating an assault in Cowes. The picture forms part of an appeal for three specific witnesses to come forward. At half past midnight on the morning of Sunday, March 17, 2013, there was a dispute between two people outside the Dalyan kebab house in Birmingham Road in Cowes. Three customers inside the kebab house can be seen on CCTV to be watching

the argument through the window. Further enquiries have established that the disturbance continued inside the kebab house affecting some customers. Police are appealing for the people in this CCTV image to come forward and contact investigating officers as potential witnesses. They are not suspected of any crimes. ‘Very Sad’ at Death of Baroness Thatcher Andrew Turner has said he is “very sad” to hear of the death of Baroness Thatcher following a stroke on Monday 8April. Mr Turner said : “Baroness Thatcher was quite simply the best Prime Minister of my lifetime I am very sad to hear that she has died. She turned Great Britain around from being the ‘sick man of Europe’ to a prosperous country with wealth spread throughout all parts of the nation and across all sectors of the public. Coming from a humble background herself she understood the aspirations people have to forge better lives for themselves and their families. Many people’s lives were transformed by

opportunities she created; for example for the first time tenants were able to buy their council houses and so build up some return from the rent they had paid in for many years. “It was not for nothing that she was known as the Iron Lady - and together with Ronald Regan and Pope John Paul II she brought about the collapse of communism. Of course she also stood firm in 1982 against Argentinean aggression over the Falkland Islands – sending a task force some 8,000 miles around the world to stand up for those British people living so far away. “I had not seen her for some time – but when I

last saw her although her body was frail and she had some difficulty speaking and problems with her memory – her mind was as sharp as ever. “In 1997 she signed a card wishing me well in my selection interview for the Isle of Wight and it must have brought me luck.”

Easter Takings stolen from Pub

Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a safe containing around £2,000 of Easter takings was stolen during a burglary at a village pub. The incident occurred in the early hours of the

morning on Tuesday, April 2 at around 3.20am, when someone broke into the Crown Inn, Walkers Lane, Shorwell. A 31 year old man has been arrested and is currently on police bail until Tuesday, April 30.

COUNCIL TO LAUNCH NEW LOOK WEBSITE The Isle of Wight Council will launch a new look version of its website - www.iwight.com - on Monday 15 April. The site, which had almost 11 million page views and over 1.2 million unique visitors in 2012, has been given a fresh look to make it easier for users to find information and services. The council began a review of its website early last year and began building the new site, giving it a fresh, colourful and up to date look. Richard Williams, head of ICT at the Isle of Wight Council said; "More and more people and businesses engage with the council online and it is important the council has a website that meets demand and is adaptable. "Feedback showed that people

sometimes had difficulties finding the information they were after. The refresh seeks to give more prominence and easier access to the services and information that people use by stripping out superfluous and outdated material that they do not need. "Central to this is not simply removing material but providing in its place links to sites that contain more comprehensive or more regularly updated information. "I am sure residents will see the benefits of the changes and we will of course keep the site under review and respond to feedback." Because this is a major relaunch of the site, considerable testing issues, such as links not working, report problems or give general has taken place. Four Kayaks stolen from Brading Yacht Club

Police are appealing for witnesses after four Kayaks were stolen from a Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight The break-in happened at Brading Haven Yacht Club around 12am on Tuesday 9th April. Thieves damaged two CCTV cameras and removed four kayaks that were chained up outside the club house. The stolen kayaks were “all top of

The owner of Sandham Rides in Fort Street, Sandown reported a break-in to police on Wednesday, April 10, when they discovered that the store used to house their petrol driven Go Karts has been broken into and one of the karts removed. The Go Kart was a red

Police keen to trace key witnesses to an assault Isle of Wight Police are keen to trace witnesses to an assault in Scarotts Lane, Newport. The incident occurred around 6pm on Friday, April 5 close to New Street Car Park, when a 42year-old woman was attacked and left with minor injuries. A 38-year-old man was later arrested and charged on suspicion of assault and bailed to appear before Isle of Wight Magistrate Courts on Tuesday, April 30. Detectives have said that this is a rare and isolated occurrence at a time when there were several people in Scarotts Lane.

They are particularly interested in hearing from a man who tried to intervene and break the incident up. He is described as smartly dressed and wearing a ‘man bag’, he left the scene and walked towards Newport town centre. He may have been in the company of a second potential witness who was wearing a white jacket. Anyone with information can contact Newport police by phoning 101. Giddings lends his support to the vectis youth rugby festival Taking place on 28th April The Vectis Rugby Festival is the pinnacle of the season for the children’s rugby club on the Island. The hugely popular annual event will see around 1,800 children playing rugby on the day at Seaclose Park in Newport, accompanied by adults, who are all there for the love of the game of Rugby Union. One of the greatest challenges for the event organisers is finding enough car parking spaces nearby for the large number of attendees. This year, John Giddings has been working closely with Vectis and has agreed that the Isle of Wight Festival camping fields can be utilised to facilitate additional space for the Vectis Rugby Festival. John Giddings, Festival organiser said, “The Vectis Rugby Festival is a great event held here on the Island every year. I am happy to be able to offer the Isle of Wight Festival

Asda Smart Price Corned Beef found to contain Bute Asda is recalling their Asda Smart Price Corned Beef because it has been found to contain Bute. This recall affects all date codes of Asda Smart Price Corned Beef in 340g tins. Animals treated with bute should not enter the food chain as the drug may pose a risk to human health; however, even if people have eaten products which contain contaminated horse meat, the risk of damage to health is very low. This product was tested by Asda as part of the industry testing programme and found to be positive for horse DNA above 1%. It was withdrawn from Asda’s shelves on 8 March 2013. As with all products that have tested positive for horse DNA over 1% it was tested for bute, as required by the FSA. This product has been found to contain very low levels of bute and is the only meat product where bute has been found. However, bute has previously been found in horse carcasses. The level of bute found in this product is considerably lower than the highest levels found in carcasses (the highest level found was 1900ppb). Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies previously said: ‘Horse meat containing phenylbutazone presents a very low risk to human health. ‘Phenylbutazone, known as bute, is a commonly used medicine in horses. It is also prescribed to some patients who are suffering from a severe form of arthritis. The levels of bute that have previously been found in horse carcasses mean that a

person would have to eat 500 – 600 one hundred per cent horsemeat burgers a day to get close to consuming a human’s daily dose. And it passes through the system fairly quickly, so it is unlikely to build up in our bodies. ‘In patients who have been taking phenylbutazone as a medicine there can be serious side effects but these are rare. It is extremely unlikely that anyone who has eaten horse meat containing bute will experience one of these side effects.’ Since the horse meat investigation began in January 2013, this is the first product that has tested positive for bute. Police are reminding public to lock up their vehicles

Staff at a hotel in Shanklin have shown their support for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital by raising £1,500. James Helyer, who works at the Medehamstede hotel, and his partner Magdalena, were so pleased with the care their son, Joshua, received in the unit they wanted to give something back. James, together with the bar staff at the hotel, helped to raise the money through collections and Raffles.

Receiving the donation, Sister Pamela George, said: “This is a fantastic sum of money for us. We are planning to purchase another warming mattress which enables babies to come out of an incubator quicker and be transferred into a normal cot on the maternity ward alongside mum.” The presentation took place on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday 3rd April 2013.

Police on the Isle of Wight are reminding the public to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables, even if parked on a driveway or being left for a few minutes. The warnings come after a recent spate of thefts where cash, a wallet and even loose change were taken from different vehicles in the Sandown area. The incidents occurred overnight in Perowne Way, Sandown between Sunday, April 7 and Monday, April 8, 2013. In a separate incident a number of coaches parked in Fort Street overnight on the evening of Friday, April 5, were entered and food and fizzy drinks taken. Don’t be tempted to leave anything of value on the coach,

take it with you or ask the driver if there is a secure locker to store it in. Streets in Cowes are some of the first to receive new lights Work to replace street lights across the Island has begun, with a number of streets in Cowes being the first to be fitted with this energy-saving lighting solution. The current street lighting across the Island is in variable condition and many columns and lights need to be replaced. As part of the highway service, Island Roads are installing new lights and columns to improve the look and feel of our roads and pavements and to improve safety where it is most needed to help reduce traffic accidents, crime and the fear of crime for all. Paul Herbert, Island Roads Service Director, said, “Lighting is one of the greatest consumers of energy, Island Roads will be replacing all streetlights over the next three years converting to LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lamps. Due to the efficient nature of LED, this new lighting will be more reliable and once installed they will result in less lights out of service and will also support the Eco Island Vision.” As the new streetlights are installed they automatically connect to our central management system. They will be illuminated for the first 24 hours, until this system

has been configured and will then return to normal operating mode. Longer term benefits of this system mean that the lighting will be able to be controlled – dimming and enhancing our streets and public spaces in accordance with the IWC requirements. Heritage lights may also be replaced with new heritage style columns and lanterns of sympathetic appearance so residents will not see a change to the look of the street light itself. However, the replacement lanterns will also contain a modern LED light source to continue to support this carbon efficient program of improvements.

Riverfest 2013: Latest News Last May thousands of local people flocked to the Riverfest event on Newport’s historic Quay, making it the largest community event in the county town of the Isle of Wight. The sixth annual Riverfest is again to be organised by the Footprint Trust as a celebration of river and community life. There will be no admission charge and many children’s activities will be free. The date for your diaries is Saturday 25th May 2013 from 11am. Those attending are encouraged all those attending to use public transport or to walk or cycle. A flotilla with vessels of all shapes, ages and sizes, will once again prove to be popular. The highlight of the day will be the arrival of a tall ship from The Little Brig Sailing Trust, a charity that operates the world's smallest tall ships to provide the complete sailing experience to young people. The ship will be traditionally rigged with two masts, 10 sails, and one hundred ropes. We have heard that the notorious Wight Piratesearly 18th Century Pirate and Smuggler reenactors - will be capturing a tall ship and then invading Riverfest so watch out! Cowes Sailability Club will be sailing along to Riverfest 2013 in the vessels Dougal and Zebedee. The club was formed to promote and facilitate water sports for Island people with disabilities. They have acquired the sailing boats a Caledonia Yawl and a Drascombe Longboat. In April 2009 they were proud to commission Dougal, the motor vessel specially modified for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. Their RIB Zebedee provides patrol & safety support their activities afloat.

This year Riverfest will be hosting a charity fair, with over 30 local charities taking part. Their members will be on hand to explain their work and to celebrate their successes. They will also be hoping to raise funds to maintain their very important work. There will be an array of local food, crafts and photography. Traditional cakes, ice cream, preserves and sweets will be on sale including the popular Isle of Fudge! For those wanting to indulge themselves and really pig out, Newport-based French Franks will have a hog roast on offer! Locally made occasional furniture will be on show along with t-shirts and paintings. Jewellery, candles, greeting cards and other handicrafts will be on offer. Isle of Wight NHS Trust has commissioned a set of original prints by the artist Laura Boswell The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has commissioned a set of original prints by the artist Laura Boswell, titled ‘Fourteeen Views of the Island’ for the new East Cowes Health Centre. The art work is on display in both the public waiting areas and the specialist clinical and treatment rooms as part of the organisations policy to create quality environments for delivery of its healthcare services. An accompanying exhibition of Laura Boswell’s work is also on display in the Full Circle Exhibition Space at St. Mary’s Hospital. Guy Eades, Healing Arts Director, said: “In all new healthcare buildings, as part of the capital budget, the Trust seeks to commission original artwork to support and complement the healthcare services being delivered there. These artworks make the patient experience significantly better and enable staff to offer an environment where the welfare and treatment of patients is of the highest standards. “The healthcare team at East Cowes Health Centre worked closely with the artist, Laura Boswell, in selecting locations and images from the Island landscape that they thought best suited the range of services to be offered at East Cowes. The artworks are original woodblock prints and there will be a display at the Centre for persons to see and learn about how the prints have been made.” Laura established her Print

workshop in 2005 and regularly visits the Island as she is inspired by its landscape, coastline and seascapes. Initially working in linocut prints, in 2009 Laura studied the ancient and traditional method of Japanese woodblock printing in Awaji, Japan – the East Cowes Health Centre collection of prints are all in this medium. Commenting on ‘Fourteen Views of the Island’, Laura said: “The brief for this project was to bring space and light into the East Cowes Health Centre using some of the Island's best loved landmarks. This fabulous commission has pushed my skills and knowledge as a printmaker to the absolute limit and resulted in a unique collection of prints celebrating the Isle of Wight's coasts, landscapes and towns. I have called the collection of prints 'Fourteen views of the Island' as an homage to the famous Japanese printmakers including Hokusai (famous for 'The Great Wave') who often produced collections of much loved Japanese landscapes using exactly the same methods and tools as I have for the Health Centre.” The exhibition at the Full Circle shows 1 print of the set: ‘The Needles from above Alum Bay’. £300 million boost for SME lending Small and medium sized businesses struggling to access finance receive a boost as the first phase of the new business bank is launched £300 million will be coinvested alongside private sector investment Builds on Business Finance Partnership successes First phase of business bank programme launched Small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) struggling to access finance received a boost today as the Business Secretary Vince Cable launched the first phase of the new business bank. £300 million will be invested alongside private investors to address longstanding gaps in the SME finance market. This money is the first deployment from the £1 billion of new capital allocated to the business bank in the 2012 Autumn Statement. It will build on the success of the Business Finance Partnership to leverage at least the same amount in private sector investment. The focus is on promoting greater diversity of debt finance available to SMEs by encouraging the growth

of smaller lenders and new entrants in the market. Investments will be made via new and existing lending channels on a commercial basis. New research by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) highlights that SMEs have been disproportionately affected in their ability to access finance as a result of the contraction in bank lending since 2008. Business Secretary Vince Cable said: Small and medium sized businesses are still telling me that access to finance is their number one problem, preventing them from investing and growing. That’s why through the business bank we are developing a range of measures to provide businesses with the power to choose the type of finance that suits them. The government committed £1 billion of new capital to the business bank initiative last year, and, taken together with existing measures means the government is providing nearly £4 billion to help SMEs secure lending. Although the

formal institution will not be operational until next year, the government is determined to make support available to small and medium sized businesses as soon as possible in advance of this. The government welcomes proposals from a wide range of lenders. There are opportunities for government to invest, alongside private investors, in a range of options including existing and new lending channels like smaller lenders, debt funds, asset backed lenders, supply chain finance, peer-to-peer lending and other lending platforms. Lenders should demonstrate how government could make commercial investments through managed investments or direct capital investments. It is expected that the first transactions will take place by Autumn 2013. Earl Mountbatten Hospice awarded £777,022 Hospices across England providing end of life care for children and adults have been awarded a share of £60 million government funding to improve care environments and settings. The Earl Mountbatten Hospice and 175 other hospices will benefit from the fund, which will be used to invest in creating new spaces for patients, their families and carers, whilst also supporting the care hospices provide to people in their own homes. “This extra funding will help bring hospices up to date, so staff and volunteers can work in modern environments, helping them continue to provide wonderful support with compassion and kindness. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Hospices help patients and their families at what can be the most difficult part of their life. “And patients will see a huge difference in their surroundings that play a considerable part in helping them psychologically & physically”

Run in partnership with the charity Help the Hospices, the funding was made available to projects delivering improvements that directly benefit patients, have a tangible impact on the physical environment and provide value for money. This fund builds upon the successful outcomes from the £40million scheme run in 2010/11, but will be available to all children’s as well as adults hospices. Care and Support Minister, Norman Lamb said: “Every one of us has the right to the best quality of care at the end of our lives – hospices play an integral role in helping to deliver this. “This fund will help hospices provide dignified, compassionate, high quality care and support to people and their families at what is a difficult time in their lives.” The funding was committed as part of the DofH’s strategy to provide high quality care for all adults approaching the end of their life, launched in July 2008.

Bikesafe is coming to the Isle of Wight Bikesafe is coming to the Isle of Wight on Sunday May 12th. It will be held at Ryde Fire Station from 0830-1630. This is open to all members of the public who may want to improve their riding skills. The day includes a morning session of presentations with input from a BASICS Doctor, lunch is provided followed by an observed ride with a Police Motorcyclist. The cost of the full day is £50 What is Bikesafe? BikeSafe is a police led motorcycle project that is run by most forces throughout the UK. The main aim is to reduce the number of bikers being hurt on the roads. We think that riding should be fun and by improving skills, knowledge and hazard awareness it will hopefully make riding safer and more enjoyable. The BikeSafe workshop explores the main issues facing today’s bikers. It also explores the principles of advanced riding through the on-road element. The BikeSafe Observer will give assessment and feedback which will highlight areas where the rider needs to develop. BikeSafe is about starting on the right path to development as it "Bridges the Gap". Riders should continue to train throughout their riding years and not just stop once they have passed their bike test. In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight statistics show that 65% of all motorcycle collisions happen at or near a junction and that 35% of them show that other vehicle drivers failed to appreciate or assess the path of the Motorcyclist on the main road.

Rather than laying blame solely with other vehicle drivers, many of these collisions could have been avoided by riders using a simple plan to deal with hazards appropriately and by taking better responsibility for their own safety. These issues are covered during the BikeSafe course so motorcyclists can gain more confidence, improve their abilities and get more enjoyment from riding. For the last 2 years, Hampshire Constabulary has provided a structured workshop in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services to deliver rider awareness and assessment workshops and the response from participants has always been very positive. In 2010 we were joined by Mr Bruce Armstrong of the BASICS (British Association for Immediate Care) charity, who delivers life saving skills input and helmet removal techniques. This is not always what participants want to hear but the content is vital so that more riders have the skills to provide immediate care prior to the arrival of the Emergency Services.

Shake up of PAYE system begins The biggest shake up of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system in nearly 70 years – Real Time Information – started from 6 April, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reminded employers in the South. Employers will be required to move to a new way of reporting PAYE in real time, sometimes called Real Time Information (RTI), where they report to HMRC each time they pay employees, rather than annually. This updates the PAYE system so that it is quicker, easier and more accurate. With the introduction of RTI, employers will benefit from much simpler requirements for reporting to HMRC and the abolition of the extensive annual tax return that the old system

required. David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said: For employees, particularly the one million people in the UK with multiple jobs, RTI will bring benefits as HMRC starts to get details of their tax every time their wages are paid, rather than just once a year. This will make HMRC’s records more accurate and up-to-date and will reduce the number of cases where someone is found to have under or overpaid tax during the year. RTI will deliver the new Employment Allowance, which will reduce the cost of taking on new staff for small business. RTI will make it simple to administer, to ensure maximum take-up and help

aspiring businesses grow by hiring employees or expanding their workforce. Real Time Information will be better for employers and employees. It will bring PAYE into the 21st Century. Ruth Owen, HMRC’s Director General Personal Tax, said: This will be a year of transition. Employers in the South will start to report PAYE in real time from their first payday on or after 6 April. We understand it may take some time before all employers will get into the routine of real time reporting. But HMRC is here to give help and support, including offering free software for employers with nine or fewer employees, regular live Twitter Q&As, YouTube videos and roadshows.

32-year-old Yarmouth man arrested following break-ins A 32-year-old man from Yarmouth was detained in Brighstone at 4.35am on Saturday morning (March 30, 2013) on suspicion of burglary. He was questioned and released on bail until May 24, 2013 pending further enquiries. The arrest comes as detectives from Isle of Wight CID gather further evidence relating to three reports of burglaries at businesses on the Isle of Wight. At around 4am on Saturday, March 30, 2013, the glass of a door to the Village Shop on the main road in Brighstone was smashed. Nothing was reported stolen. It’s believed two suspects were disturbed during the breakin. Police are appealing for information from anyone who saw or heard any suspicious behaviour in Brighstone during the early hours of Saturday. Detectives are linking this burglary to two similar break-ins on the Island recently. At 4.30am on Good Friday (March 29, 2013), a burglary was reported at the pharmacy in Niton High Street. No drugs were taken – enquiries are continuing into what was stolen. At around 4.30am on Sunday, March 17, 2013, Boots the Chemist in Moa Place, Freshwater, was broken in to when thieves smashed a panel in the front door of the store. Once inside, a quantity of Diazepam was stolen from the medication shelving behind the sales counter. A Red Nose Day collection bucket was also taken from

off of the counter, although the amount of money it held is unknown. Diazepam is a prescription drug and misuse can have dangerous short- and longterm health consequences when used incorrectly or by someone other than for whom they were intended. Hampshire Constabulary’s Isle of Wight District Chief Inspector Nick Heelan said: “Police would like to thank members of the public who have provided information that has assisted officers in making an arrest, although no one has been charged to appear in court at this time. “We are always mindful that certain security measures can seem expensive and impractical for businesses in the current financial climate. However, wherever possible and affordable, we would encourage managers and staff to check and reinforce crime prevention precautions on their premises. “Dedicated officers with local knowledge will always seek to work closely with businesses to share information on suspicious behaviour so we can act swiftly to deter and catch criminals that threaten people’s livelihoods.” Anyone with information about these burglaries can contact CID at Newport Police Station by phoning 101. The UK’s largest independent marine safety equipment supplier, Ocean Safety, was helping sailors prepare for the new season by another in its series of presentations which advise on the operation and use of safety equipment. The Southampton-based company held a session at the Island Sailing Club in Cowes in late March. Chris Waterman, Ocean Safety’s Training Manager, was there to talk about liferafts and lifejackets, with the aim of providing a better understanding of how they work, and how and when

they should be serviced. At the same time the company gave one of its renowned flare demonstrations, where each attendee had the chance to let off a flare. Other products were demonstrated as well and there was plenty of opportunity for question and answer sessions, as well as a fully interactive programme of familiarisation with the products. “The Ocean Safety presentations have gone from strength to strength,” commented Ocean Safety’s Training Manager Chris

Coastal Communities fund: £27m round two now open Following huge success last year, English seaside towns now have a second chance to apply to a multimillion pound Coastal Communities Fund, Communities Secretary Eric Pickles announced. Applications for this year’s pot of £27.2m are now open. The funds available have been increased by over £3.5m so more communities can win awards to boost their economic development. The fund for the projects is raised from the Crown Estate’s marine assets and reinvested in coastal areas. In 2012, twenty-six projects in England from Scarborough to Swanage, and from Torbay to Tyneside, received funding to develop their areas, helping to create and safeguard 5,000 jobs, 1,400 training places, 400 volunteering opportunities and support 250 new business startups. The money was also used for a variety of projects including rejuvenating heritage areas and leisure facilities as well as helping businesses embrace digital technology and promote innovation. The projects also attracted additional funding from public and private co-sponsors of over £16m.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: “This Government is committed to supporting seaside towns and we know this scheme really made a difference so I’m delighted to announce a second year of funding for Coastal Communities. “For too long seaside towns, large and small, were overlooked and this fund gives them a lifeline to grab hold of to create skilled workers and year round jobs that will build stronger communities and stronger local economies. “The fund was a huge success last year and I want to see as many exceptional projects as possible put forward in year two.” Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander said: “Last year we helped organisations around the country to invest in their communities through the Coastal Communities Fund, and I’m delighted that growing marine revenues from the Crown Estate have allowed us to increase the pot by over 15 per cent this year. “From regenerating the promenade at Seaburn, developing shellfish farming facilities in Devon and giving Swanage and Wareham back their rail link, the funding has made a

The owners are then faced with a bonanza of surprise valuations and cash offers on some of their most prized (or not so prized) possessions. They can either accept or reject the offers and the owners must then face the choice between sentimental attachment and the chance to make a fast buck. The Cowes Floating Bridge will be out of service for approx five days from Monday 15 April for its annual inspection. Diversions

through Newport for motorists will be in place. A passenger launch will be available, which cyclists can also use.

More parking spaces at St Marys More car parking spaces are now available for patients, visitors and staff following the completion of a new car park at St. Mary’s Hospital. The new car park is for staff parking and is located adjacent to the north east car park at the top of the hospital site. This has enabled 94 parking spaces, which were originally designated staff parking, to be re-designated and made available for patients and visitors to use. The 94 spaces are nearer to the main hospital building

and neighbouring clinics. There are now an additional 74 patient/visitor spaces available in the north west car park adjacent to the Maternity Unit and a further 20 spaces in the car park near to the Laidlaw Rehabilitation Service which is situated to the south of the hospital site. Karen Baker, Isle of Wight NHS Trust Chief Executive, said: “People coming to hospital for treatment or to visit friends and family should not have to be concerned with where to

park and the distress it can sometimes cause. Hopefully the additional parking spaces will relieve some of the pressure, for staff and for patients and relatives. Particularly the redesignation of spaces closer to the hospital building will make things easier. However, there is no quick fix and we are continuing to look at ways of reducing the amount of traffic on the hospital site and how we can support staff to use alternative methods of transport to and from work.”
