For a small city, Copenhagen is home of world-class architecture. This is thanks to the national desire to make buildings that are both interesting and sustainable to design the riverside. The Copenhagen Opera House is the most famous building, donated by the Møller and McKinney Foundation and designed by the architect Henning Larsen. Other important architecture on the river are the Black Diamond, the Royal Danish Playhouse, Copenhagen Harbour Baths, the Gemini Residence and the UN City.
In 1992, the Municipality of Genoa organizes works with the primary objective of restoring the link between the port and the historic city, which had loose ties with the construction of the speedway. The connection between the old town and the area of the old port is Piazza Caricamento and the project includes the renovation and restoration of historic buildings and the construction of new facilities such as the Aquarium, the Bigo and the Biosphere.
The Kop van Zuid project reprogrammed Rotterdam and connected the north to the south. It was built on old, abandoned port areas on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas that was always known as the weaker side of Rotterdam. Kop van Zuid is an attractive and vibrant urban area that stimulate the economy and satisfy the demand of a service oriented location. Erasmus Bridge is a cablestayed bridge across the Nieuwe Maas and represent the symbol of the project.
Marina Bay is a bay near Central Area of Singapore with commercial, residential, hotel and entertainment areas, that represents a new urban centre for the city. The Singapore government spent $35 million to complete the 3.5 km Waterfront Promenade around Marina Bay with the Youth Olympic Park, Marina Bay City Gallery and Gardens by the Bay located. Private buildings like Marina Bay Sands Resort, projected by architect Moshe Safdie, are located in the bay too.
Darling Harbour is a harbour adjacent to the city centre of Sydney. Most of its fame is thanks to the construction of the Sydney Opera House projected by danish architect Jørn Utzon that represents the fulcrum of the area. It is also a large recreational and pedestrian precinct that is situated on western outskirts of the Sydney central business district and it is home of a number of major public facilities and attractions. it was originally part of the commercial port of the city.

Was founded as a Roman colony, Londinium, located on the north shore; in later times, with extensions of the city, this has expanded to the other side of the Thames, but the area south of London has been considered a suburb, which is why over the course of the river were placed industrial areas. Only in the second half of the twentieth century the south bank has been redeveloped; many current projects for the conversion of areas of the city are industrial developments.
The original center foundation of the Roman city of Florence dates back to 59 BC The town developed in the tenth century and became an independent municipality in 1115 and in the Middle Ages became an important cultural, commercial and financial center: it was during its historic expansion that the city recognized to the Arno an increasingly important role. On November 4, 1966, the face of the city changed completely when the river overflew hitting not only the historical center but the entire basin.
The historical thresholds expansion of Seoul show the theme of the centrality of the Cheonggyecheon river, and were developed following the principles of Feng Schui, so the city has undergone a decentralization expanding only on the north bank of the Han River. With the successive historical thresholds has returned to the centralization of the river through a natural development of settlement areas, which, with the exponential increase of the population, have crossed the river Han, breaking the natural boundary.
The city of Lugdunum was founded in 43 BC on the Fourvière hill, the site used as a basis to Caesar’s Gallic expedition. But the Saone and the Rhone soon became central to Renaissance Lyon who made the presqu’île the starting point of its expansion. The Industrial Revolution weakened this centrality: the containment of the Rhône allowed a greater mastery of the stream, which pushed the economic center to the east. This led the town to elaborate numerous development plans in order to “rebalance” the city, bringing back the two rivers in the center.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Manila. The case of the Pasig River HALO - HALO MELTING POT Based on the analysis of the project map we have chosen to tackle the issue of the edges of the main Manila’s river, the Pasig, and to propose an urban regeneration based on specific interventions. In the specific case we want to create a connection between different districts to the north and south of the river, through an infrastructure, a system of pedestrian bridges and paths. Integrating these elements in temperamentally different areas of the city, the intent is to create and define areas and public spaces on the riverfront that could be the beginning of a more large-scale urban regeneration. In particular,

Project Map in part adjacent to Pasig where it engage the heads of the bridges, the project seeks to create belvedere places or squares that create spaces for the community, missing the entire city of Manila. We then studied the area adjacent to ‘Intramuros’, where, through the redevelopment of the docks and the design of a pedestrian bridge has gone into creating the link between the two districts of China Town and the “old town”, which had not previously direct report. We chose to take the “Vernacular” typology by using it for the cover of crossing, thereby creating a reference with the local culture in order to fit into the urban context.

SOCIAL RIVER SPACES really enter the area. With respect to the edges of the river, the intension is again to make place for the river by making a social area. Therefor we made three types of river sides: streets, walking pads and green areas. These are along the river to gain the water in flooding periods over the full length to protect the land. With these modifications the general look of the riverside remains the same, and since a big part has their historical and cultural values, this seemed to be very important. Summarized, the aim of the project is to create a varicosity of spaces and places by considering the needs of the different situations. By doing this, we found a solution to a technical and social problem in one.

The project started by making two thematic analysis, one about flooding areas and one about parts to be upgraded on the edges of the Pasig River. Considering what we saw by visiting the area, we came to a third point: a lack of social areas. Therefore we decided to integrate a social aspect and so the idea came up to create public spaces “to solve the water problem”. Combining these three themes in a single project, results in redesigning the old river around the “Intramuros” into a “Wadi”, to use for floodwater during the raining seasons and to use as a social place during the dry seasons. Around this historic area of Manila we use terraces to lower the area so it is still attainable and the water can

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Manila. The case of the Pasig River FLOATING CONNECTION From viewing Manila, the feeling was about a very chaotic and teeming city, but contrarily the course of the Pasig is an area a lot less populated, showing an image very far from the crowded city that it seems to be. For this reason, our project focuses on the Pasig river. By the positioning floating and equipped platforms along the shores, the main goal is to offer to the inhabitants, new ways and new motivation to live the river. The idea puts its bases on the Philippines vernacular tradition that, thanks to the prosperity of the city river commercial activity, have developed a strong tradition if housing and living on the river, in a real and very direct relation to it. In the actual project, following the geometry of the course of the river, the platforms are designed to create different shapes and different ways to interact to each other. More on, observing the course of the river, it has been noticed how it is physically and

Project Map indeed separate from the city life through a cement wall along the bank; for this reason, the first intervention to be done is changing the bank configuration, eliminating the separation while giving it a disposition that leads the people to approach the river, by soft inclination and vast stair. The new configuration of the shore allows the access to the platforms that are nearly a natural prolongation of the city. The floating system has been dealt with so that it is possible to follow the level of the water during wet or dry season; in this way, they are enjoyable during the whole year, even if they assume different configurations during different periods. We believe that the characteristic of temporariness it is fundamental for the project, not only for a year time, but even in long terms speaking: some the platforms can be removed, substituted or increased over and over in time.

PASIG RIVER: PUBLIC SPACE GENERATOR Metro Manila is a city made of several parts which are very different one from the other because of the difficult relationships between them. The Pasig River is an element of caesura in the city and due to the pollution is not possible to consider it like an element of merit. This in the situation in which the project was made. It is based on two focuses: bring the Pasig River at its natural centrality and reconnect the different part of the city. For the first point we focused our intervention directly on the water. With floating platforms located in front of the Post Office we want to create a public space that, whit the connection made up by pedestrian bridges, will help to rejoin the different part of the city. The Post Office will become the new center of the city thank to the new public spaces and its new function as a museum. From
Project Map this new center we will create other three focuses: one in the Intramuros and the other two in Chinatown district. We have done them in order to create a necessary tension that give us the opportunities to create a system of axes and connections with an art-historical valence in the city. The connections will be characterized by new fronts, new paving and new trees that will bring shadow along the new pedestrian way. The new space is designed like a succession of compressions and dilatations that will let us to create new costructed public spaces with commercial and office nearby. The floating platforms are located along the river and in the secondary channels and they are designed to be public spaces with a phytodepuration system that is studied to get rid of the pollution’s problem.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Manila. The case of the Pasig River A LINEAR PARK FOR MANILA The idea of the project is to rehabilitate the Pasig River purifying it from its tributaries. Starting as a design theme from the intersections between the river and its tributaries, the idea is to propose a regeneration of the city from the construction of a linear park on the banks of the Pasig which could become a system for the future development of the city. Creating a system of water purification of the tributaries can gradually

Project Map clean up the main river: the proposal is to bury them, and create parks on older sediments so that they represent the green branches that are directly linked to the main park. Further intervention is to place in each intersection of the landmarks as symbols that highlight the point at which were present the old locks. The goal on a large scale to create a line offset from the park rapresents the possible development of a new linear city.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Manila. The case of the Pasig River A WAY TO GREEN The Project bases itself on the requalification of the Pasig river situated in Manila. The main idea of the intervention is the river’s linearity and the creation of a pedestrian riverfront on the north margin, defined by the presence of landmarks, having different typology and shape, placed in the correspondence of water pumps, projected to containing the overflowing water. Those

Project Map represent by their shape and colors the various areas of the city, located behind them. A green area comes up beside the two margins of the river, that is arranged with open pavilions and water stream. Both sides of the river are linked by a pedestrian bridge, that puts in relationship the north area having a minor pedestrian path with the south area with an arena in front of the Intramuros.

PONTE PLAZA: Social barrier breaker We started to work on the master plan, in which we introduced a project idea that wants to become a model of intervention able to broke the social barriers between south an north. The principal theme is the one of the axis: an actual connection, the bridge, and a visual one, the continuous axis, emphasized by two landscapes. The first axis is the most realistic one whereas the two dashed ones are more idealistic: however the intent is to connect them to existent and new secondary axis and points of interest. The master plan comes from the Burnham plan reinterpretation: the grey grids are the existing part whereas the green ones are the reinterpreted ones. The core intervention is the Ponte-Plaza: starting from campus example we understood that an indispensable and neutral space is able to bring together different social classes. Therefore the intention isn’t to solve a very complex reality but to became an input for different
Project Map and larger interventions. The bridge itself is at the same time a pedestrian connection and a strategic public plaza. The uniformity of the axis is made possible by the systematic use of a unique rhythm for the green and the buildings. The project also expands on the Pasig banks, where new green areas are made possible by the vertical concentration of the previous residences. The plaza core has to merge the main different functions and uses of the newly linked areas, in this case, commercial and residence. Architecturally, not to simply merge two such contrasting realities, we preferred to elaborate a third project model: the bridge and the ground floor of the shophouses would be made of stone whereas the residential floors of wood, as in the traditional division between ground floor and upper floors. Finally, the two roofs evocate the vernacular philippino architecture.

TANAW Our preliminary study on the area of Manila was founded on the close examination of the two main themes that seemed the most interesting ones about the area around the Pasig river. The two themes concern on one side the environmental aspect and on the other the social aspects which divide this part of the city. Here the river, in fact, both seems an abandoned and not valorized urban fact, as its banks, and it acts as a cultural “division” among two near but very different parts of the city. On one side in fact there is the historical part of the city with its symbols, the Intramuros and Fort Santiago, while on the other side, to north, there are the
Project Map district Binondo are China Town, poor and abandoned parts of the city. Our intention is to implement a project to enhance the river banks, building artificial docks, in order to partially reduce the problem of flooding, and make them accessible, mixing the green with the “umbrella shed” inspired from those of Felix Candela as protection from the sun, using local materials. In addition, using the principal axes of Intramuros, we would like to create visual links, since there are already several bridges, which, as in Canberra, could help to unify the city, putting even some recognizable landmarks that can give a new identity to the Pasig River and to the city.
