“Feasibility Study of Naviglio Reopening” DASTU Department - Politecnico di Milano
Milan is set in the heart of the Po Basin of northern Italy, halfway across the immense plain spreading between the Ticino and Adda rivers, the Navigli System covers this area between the rivers. The Navigli System, an artificial hydrographic system, is formed by three main canals: Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Martesana, Naviglio Pavese. The Naviglio Grande starts where it draws water from the Ticino river and ends in the dock Darsena of Porta Ticinese in Milan. The Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan would replace vast tracts of industrial land along the river with parks, clean up the river and make it appear more natural while retaining its important flood-control role. The plan is intended to guide construction of a series of parks along 32 miles of the river from Canoga Park to downtown Los Angeles over 25 to 50 years. The waterway in recent years has attracted new interest from those who would like to blast away its walls and replace them with a semblance of a natural river. The master plan consists of 239 projects, most of them small. Some, however, would be immense. In two places — Chinatown and Canoga Park — residential and office villages would rise along the river’s newly greened banks, replacing factories and warehouses.
The canal Zone is part of a geographical entity. The regional domain is created by grouping areas of land, most of which are already public, while buying others to begin an operation. Invent the Domain and the footprint it should take six territorial themes defined: canal and port, industrial heritage, public spaces, exceptional locations, derelict plots and natures. The Plan defines the following goals: inventive economy, less spent to achieve more and achieve it better; provide public spaces equivalently to the number of square metres of new space; investigating the situation and making the most of what’s already there; unity of location: defined by the Regional Domain, unity of action: a single developer, unity of time: 12 years divided into 5 periods; put into practice as a series of actions within the outlines of the Regional Domain.
By demolishing an elevated freeway, Cheonggyecheon Canal Restoration Project created both ecological and recreational benefits along a 3.6-mile (5.8 km) corridor in the center of Seoul. The overall restoration design covers water level control in the river, design of 22 bridges, and design of sewer system. Ecological benefits achieved by this project include: flood protection, increased overall biodiversity, reduced urban heat island effect, reduced smallparticle air pollution. The restoration of the area of Cheonggyecheon Canal in Seoul’s city center is the first step in a major redevelopment effort of the whole 7-mile canal (11.3 km) and current ambitious architectural redevelopment projects that frame this natural drainage basin to the city.
The river was initially used for commercial purposes, and for this reason, water had become swampy and highly polluted. The operation began with the water flow invertion, in order to decrease pollution. Afterwards, a path along the river has been introduced, together with linking bridges that integrate central urban points such as Veteranis Memorial Plaza and Bridgehouse Museum Plaza. The intervention consisted also in the construction of the river banks to face the frequent floods. The project has been divided in different parts that address different functions: restaurants facing the river, kayak rental and water taxi station, leisure areas and crossing paths, open thatre, floating gardens with didactical activities, crossing path to reach the lake. The project is a unique work, but different parts are highlighted by the use of pavimentation which underline each function.
In the 20th centuries the highest number of canals system coverage in all parts of the city, the canals started to lose its importance due to an increase numbers of land mobility. This urban trasformation brings an extremely vulnerable flood condition to Bangkok, still today not completely resolved. The Klong Rob Krung is part of a regeneration of water system, the canal is divided into four segments: Banglamphu, Ong-Ang, Saphan Han, Wat Cheong Lane. Until 2015 the original canal was covered due to the establishment to the market for more than 20 years. In that year the Municipality of Bangkok have planned for the restoration around the historical center including the canal. Today the market and platforms were removed, the canal was reopened. In the future the developement of the area will direct to the creation of public space.

Founded in 2011, High Line Food creates a sustainable food system on the High Line, inspires care for the environment, and builds community. The High Line’s planting design is
inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after trains stopped running. The species of perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees were chosen for their hardiness, sustainability, and textual and color variation, with a focus on native species. High Line Art commissions and produces public art projects on and around the High Line.

The green park includes the existing hockey field with an integrated basketball court as it will create a natural gathering spot for local young people from Mjolnerpark and the adjacent school. A green landscape and a playground where families with children can meet for picnics and breaks in the grass.

in the surrounding areas to turn them into a much greener and pedestrian (satellite expansion). The park is populated by 16 small pavilions such as cafes, shops, exhibitions, gardener’s pavilions, trampolines, foot bath, stage and children’s theatre and information centre as well. Multiple stairs, lifts, bridges and escalators connect the city to the new park, rebounding it to the adjacent urban fabric.

Overlap comunities Our project involves urban regeneration and the design of the area near Torre Galfa. After studying the historical nature of the course of the underground canal near the project area, we decided to reopen this course in order to bring it back to the surface and connect it with our new urban square. The compositional origin of the project starts from the study of the conformation of the buildings near the area (crossing between Via Galvani and Via Melchiorre Gioia), so as to create not only a functional but also a formal link with them.The desire to create an urban square, which could attract the population of Milan at all hours of the day, is due to several factors, mostly related to the buildings that are already present on the site: the presence of offices, the central station and the Palazzo of the Lombardy region. Precisely from the form of the
schools present in the lot, the desire to work on the “court� type is created to generate and subdivide the spaces of our project. An urban court that works on several levels, both functional and dimension. To connect the entrances on both sides at +0.00 we have designed a panoramic terrace, which runs around the site and overlooks both the underlying project areas and the whole city. While in section we worked with three levels (0.00, -1.80 and -2.80 m). These three levels allowed us to assign to each share of the different functions. +0.00 m: raised pedestrian path with refreshment bar -1.80 m: two pedestrian walkways in which to find a playground and relaxation areas and where to read immersed in the new project green. -2.80: share of the new watercourses coming from the course deviations made in the canal.

RETHINKING URBANITY The complexity of this site reflects in various conflicts that are diminishing its urban value. Being an important commercial and business district, it attracts people from the entire city, but fails to keep them within itself. The existing contradictions are most obviously shown in the infrastructural division of the area into smaller urban “islands” of great quality. Rethinking the way they interact with each other is the starting point of our project. Creating an urban oasis in the middle of concrete dessert is what could essentially bring life and people to this part of town. The need for public space in this area is reflected mostly in the superimposed way the people are forced to walk through it. By letting the canal resurface again and hiding the busy road under the artificial hill, the area is unified into a single space, and it becomes a soft spot in a city beehive. Following the path pattern of
the existing park, and relating to the public space of Piazza Gae Aulenti, the space is composed out of different areas with flexible functions, defined by different materialisation (grass, stone, porfido, and wood). There are no instructions for the specific use of this space, the visitors experience it individually as they move from one point to another, all finally leading to its core - the naviglio. Reaching the organically shaped piazza around the canal, people are shutting down the noise of the city and are able to enjoy the natural landscape but without losing touch with reality. The view from the mineral amphitheater overlooking the area brings together the raw beauty of nature and monumental gracefulness of the city skyline. They don’t conflict each other, on the contrary, they form a utopian ideal of what a city should be - both organic and artificial, both fast and slow, both hard and soft.

The main channel of Navigli runs under Via Melchiorre Gioia, the project propose the shifting waterway in order to create a small lake for the waterfront inside the garden while the main flow of water remains the same. With the inclination from Piazza Gae Aulenti to the area, creating a slope of land which would run towards our proposed project. The waterfront hosts a recreation area for the community with shops and relaxing area which enhance people to interact and be part of the new open Navigli. The visitor can take a stepping stones which can connects both sides of the waterfront. The project goal is not only to create a recreation space but also to improve the connection between two sides of the park which divided by Via Melchiorre WORKSHOP Gioia. INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN XI edition CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Milan Water lines The design is developed following a strategy defined after an accurate analysis of functions and people and car traffic in the specific area of Via Senato. Due to the central position of the project it is defined in a situation with the peculiarities of Europeans historical centers. The project of the future Naviglio path crosses situations with completely different characteristics. The first part is mainly occupied by car traffic coming from the fashion district of Via della Spiga while the northern area is conceived as to be more silent and peaceful walkway. The project tries to define a central part that can link both sides while acting as a public square and space for fashion and art events. The main idea of art events and expositions is also related to the fact that an important art gallery for Milan (Galleria d’Arte Moderna) is located at the end of a green path that directly links to the project site. Our strategy is to have different links

for the Naviglio: bridges, platforms, squares and a stage. In fact, we have different bridges, some are narrow and only for pedestrian, and some bigger for cars, to connect the fashion district with the norther part of the city. There also are some platforms, that goes down to the water with some steps, so that people can rest, take a seat and be closer to the water. We also add a stage, in a part of our site that we found very interesting, just next to the park, and were we create a square; this stage can host different events, maybe musical ones or art as well. In the park we kept how it was, because we found that it was something to keep in a city like Milan, we just add some red boxes that can work as seat, or a table for a pic-nic, and maybe there can be a fashion show inside the park and people can seat there to enjoy the show; and they can also be platforms for art pieces.

THE REVIVAL OF THE WATER The area is actually composed by four car ways that are very noisy and that are the cause of a separation from the two side of the street. In addition to these problems, the park that is really close to the area is not really used by people who live there and from passers-by as well. For all these reasons, we decided to reopen the entire section of Naviglio, and we try to create a stop of the several paths that we want to include in this proposal, even though the main aim is to connect the two sides of the Naviglio with the same one that crosses our project. First of all, the Naviglio will be used as an infrastructure, the boat will be a mean of transport and the area will be a stop of the boat path. For this reason we decided to create a platform on the water where people
can come in from the boat, and than reach the upper square by a staircase or an elevator. The square is a very important point because it is the focus of the project. Here it will be possible to meet people or take the walk or the cycle path that cross the project and come inside the park. We decided to give importance to the park as well because it could be the extension of the project. In fact the Naviglio in the ancient Age was connected with a lake in the north of the area by a little river that ran through it, for this reason we want to reopen it and create a water path that falls in the Naviglio. In this way the park will be stronger and more comfortable and the fall will be albe to male the boat stop a unique meeting point.

livinG HistOrY Starting from the current Parco delle Basiliche, the project tries to merge both directions, the green one and the future wateway. In this point both direction converge with the addition of the new M4 stations, that creates a kind of a new centrality for the future Milan. In this project, our challange is to connect the two very important historical landmarks, restoring a very famous view that many artists painted in the past. To achieve this mission, first we created a strong and sinuous bridge between two lands. Later on we wanted to create a “darsena” kind
of a place where people can sit, chill, meet and enjoy the beautiful view of the San Lorenzo Church. Most importantly by creating a node that will act as a meeting space, activating a space through a infrastructure. What we propose will help to increase the quality of the area controlling the flows that will be generated from the new metro line, and create a new attraction place in the city. Furthermore a path next to the canal and at the level of the water guides you thought De Amicis to the new reinvented area.

illuminate urBan iDentitY The project area is located between two churches: the San Lorenzo Maggiore to the north and the Sant’Eustorgio to the south. The chosen shape of the square recalls the Greek amphitheater recalling the curvilinear forms which are characteristic for the zone. The square is divided into three terraces on different levels: the first one is on the ground level and the last almost flush with water creating attractive way to approach the canal. The arena is characterized by a steel arch that acts as a visual frame towards the San Lorenzo Maggiore. This arch has the feature of lighting up at night and spraying vapour, giving a sense of freshness and making the man-water relationship much more intense, not limiting it only from a visual and auditive point of view that you could have with the simple canal. Such arches are situated in each of the entrances of the park, uniforming the area with the square and giving those who pass through it a sense of safety at night and also a sensorial journey, further enhanced by the presence of floral essences on all the main axis. The same material - travertine was used for both the square and the park increasing the connection between them, a material typically used in Milan, able to offer interesting colour, in different weather conditions. Furthermore it is a material that “suffers” the stratification of time: “Deteriorating” and will further harmonize the project area with the historical context.
