Project Area
THE PLACE The project area is located along one of the urban sections of the river Chao Phraya. Along the coasts accessibility to the river is thin compared to the length of the waterfront. The river forms the boundary of the two districts. The east bank locates the neighbourhoods between the river and Charoen Krung Road in Bang Rak District. The west bank locates the neighbourhoods between the river and Charoen Nakhon Road in Khlong San District. Charoenkrung is considered the first proper road in Bangkok. This historic area is a unique mix of the old and new, local community and tourist attraction, as well as traditional shops and galleries/art space. Areas along Charoen Krung Road are old commercial areas that have been undergoing transformations. Similar things have started to happen in a slower and lesser way on the other side.

London is situated on the River Thames. Was founded as a Roman colony, Londinium, located on the north shore; in later times, with extensions of the city, this has expanded to the other side of the Thames, but the area south of London has been considered a suburb, which is why over the course of the river were placed industrial areas. Only in the second half of the twentieth century the south bank has been redeveloped; many current projects for the conversion of areas of the city are industrial developments.
The original center foundation of the Roman city of Florence dates back to 59 BC The town developed in the tenth century and became an independent municipality in 1115 and in the Middle Ages became an important cultural, commercial and financial center: it was during its historic expansion that the city recognized to the Arno an increasingly important role. On November 4, 1966, the face of the city changed completely when the river overflew hitting not only the historical center but the entire basin.
The historical thresholds expansion of Seoul show the theme of the centrality of the Cheonggyecheon river, and were developed following the principles of Feng Schui, so the city has undergone a decentralization expanding only on the north bank of the Han River. With the successive historical thresholds has returned to the centralization of the river through a natural development of settlement areas, which, with the exponential increase of the population, have crossed the river Han, breaking the natural boundary.

In 1992, the Municipality of Genoa organizes works with the primary objective of restoring the link between the port and the historic city, which had 1965loose ties with the construction of the speedway. The connection between the old town and the area of the old port is Piazza CaricamentoHafen and the Cityproject 2007 includes the renovation and restoration of historic buildings and the construction of new facilities such as the Aquarium, the Bigo and the Biosphere.

The measures envisaged are directed to weave continuity between Hamburg and Hafen City and between this and the southern suburbs; according to the model “a city of neighborhoods,” as its theme the network of public space, as ingredients identity and meaning, making use of the “material” of the historic center. HafenCity is an extension of the center to the river Elbe, and a bridge to the south. A competition was held for the upgrading of the area, won by Hamburgplan, a Dutch-German team led by Kees Christiaanse in cooperation with the firm ASTOC.

Two peninsulas in the eastern part of the Amsterdam docks, were to be exploited for water-related activities, as well as 2500 low-rise dwelling units, with a density of 100 units per hectare. For a new interpretation of the traditional Dutch canal house, West 8 suggested new types of three-storey, groundaccessed houses deviating from the usual terraced house in being strongly oriented to the private realm by incorporating patios and roof gardens. Three immense sculptural blocks take their place as landmarks in the vast expanse of houses.

In the 1970s, however, deindustrialization left the shores of Lake Ontario littered with brownfields, economically and environmentally spent. Four decades later, governement stakeholders are reclaiming and revitalizing this once-forgotten district. Led by Waterfront Toronto, established in 2001 by the federal, provincial, and city governments of Canada, Ontario, and Toronto, the effort is a 25-year, $34 billion megaproject that will transform 2000 acres of blighted waterfront into sustainable mixed-use communities.
Wulijie is planned to be one of many new towns in China to accommodate rapid urbanization. The main urban design concept for the town is to use landscape as ecological infrastructure to integrate various natural and cultural processes to frame the city, and to provide diverse ecosystem services for the residents. Integration and connectivity of natural, biological, and cultural processes are central to the project.
State and city leaders had the vision and the resourcefulness to transform Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from a declining industrial port into a world renowned destination for tourists and city residents. At the same time, significant signs of wear are evident throughout the Inner Harbor, from infrastructure conditions like the degrading promenade. To provide a new dynamic vision for the Inner Harbor, a new master plan looks to build upon the successes of the original 1970’s plan, while providing bold new ideas. The overall intent is to provide a visionary and realistic plan which can be implemented as funds are available.
The main purpose of the public participation programme of the Kai Tak Planning Review (the Study) is to involve the community in planning the future of Kai Tak and in building consensus on the development proposals. The general public has responded enthusiastically to these public participationprogrammes and there is general support to leisure-oriented lower density developments in Kai Tak.
In a Government initiative the Dutch expertise and experience on the integration of water management and urban development is shared with Indonesian partners. A joint project was created to conceive a Masterplan for the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD), that will facilitate and encourage flood proof and sustainable development of Jakarta. The NCICD Masterplan proposes a Giant Sea Wall that will protect Jakarta against floods from the sea. Inside the Giant Sea Wall large lagoons will be created to buffer outflow from Jakarta’s rivers. To ensure the quality of this lagoon, waste disposal, water treatment and sanitation measures will be implemented throughout the existing city.

THE WATER LINE Regeneration of the waterfront We have thought about some problems relating to this area; a lot of traffic in the main street, in the northern part of the area, the need of public free space like plazas, green areas, playground for children, some open areas with sport facilities and also some shops located in a nicer place instead of being close to the car traffic. To link all this different spaces we have designed a path just along the river which starts from the River City pier and finish to the station Taksin where there is the skytrain. To attract the flow
of people to this path we have designed with a module some shops located in the middle of the path which has the roof walkable and the interior is free space for temporary or permanent shops. The two different level are thought from the typical Thai house which has two levels; the upper more private and closed is used for the night and the lower more open is used during the day. in some parts of this promenade the linearity of the path is broken with spaces, public plazas, coming out to the river.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN VII edition CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Bangkok SKYWALK INTO THE RIVER Reconstruction of the waterfront The project redevelop the waterfront, creating a new pedestrian and cycle path. Where this path meets the many private hotels, it enters into the water with a skywalk, in order to allow you to walk along the shore for its entire length. The skywalk in water spuns from seeing the Skytrain, which we were very fascinated by. This route has different heights; it rises and falls depending on the needs. In correspondence of the main routes, cross, are located the lookout, and piers that allow public
transport boats to stop. Hotels instead have direct access to the private docks, and do not interfere with the skywalk. The path width is 10m, but when possible it widens and includes public land, to allow the unfolding of leisure and gastronomic activities. All along the waterfront a staircase leads down to the water with sitting function. Addressing and responding with different typologies depending on the situation it encounters along its path, the runway could be designed along the river.

MODULAR MARKET Reconnection to the water The project area has some local problems and lacks, our project wants to find an answer to solve them. The lack of connection between land and water underlines the main problem that you can find in this district in the big city of Bangkok. The situation is more problematic because of the scarcity of pedestrian ways and the not promotion of local business. Our idea is based on this analysis of the area and important historical relation between people and the Chao Phraya river from which their city was born;
we want to reconnect all the district with the water getting over the wall, that was built years ago like floods protection. In the main point along the river bank we have set some platforms to link land and water; on them we have designed a market system to involve local people and promote a new place for local business. The shapes melt with the city through some paths and with the river by a wide stair going down in the water.

that pass on selected roads. Each bridge consists of four basic points: a bridge that allows the crossing of the road which limits the district, the core area of ​​the walkway is divided into public spaces at street level and at the level of the walkways; the third element is precisely the connecting ramp between the two levels, allowing you to experience the area on different levels; the last element is the tower at the end of the path that has the viewpoint function and landing operations.
The idea for the project arose from the need to connect the city to the area; precisely an area that is isolated from the city by the big road that borders this. the project will also connect the city to the river, passing through the neighborhood by creating within public areas, currently missing. It is for these reasons that we decided to break the barrier of three points, after recognizing three roads that connect directly with the river, leading to the docks. The project consists of three raised pedestrian walkways

The project is about interstitial and abandoned places of the neighborhood. The aim is to create a network of public spaces that could implement the quality of life, helping the communities to enjoy and share new ways to live inside the maze of small streets. That means caring about the soil materiality and furnishing, such as benches, green supply, playgrounds, installations to create new opportunities for the people to stay on the public ground. called ‘woonerf’, connects together some spots in which there are significant public activities. The focus then is on an abandoned group of buildings, facing the river, that could become a new civic center introducing new functions: open space for exhibitions and events, green bar and co-working offices. On the plaza it is pursued the relationship with the water: a hollow framed by steps, that creates an open theatre, connects to a floating peer and on the right an auditorium lays on a small island.

TOWARDS THE STREET
The place of the project is a very enclose area with different ethnic groups that they live in separate part of that. Analyzing the area and having some interviews, we were trying to understand the features of the neighborhood and what kind of spaces does the inhabitant wanted. In this neighborhood there are a lot of abandoned buildings and we wanted to reusing that buildings and the open space around them. The strategy of this project is to reconnect the main axis with the waterfront and to recreate a new surface of the principal way
of the connection with the waterfront. We were trying to understand what does the sine needs and then we decided to work on the existing path with different level but with the same material. We chose the wood to recreating the new surface and some elements, like some benches, some covering and some platforms over the river. The paths have been enhanced by use the same material. The aim of this new landscapes is to requalify the neighborhood with a creation of some new different spaces that the people can use to. 1:2000
